    W niniejszym artykule podjęto tematykę miejsc pochówku zwierząt. Problem został omówiony w odniesieniu do terenu Polski na tle przykładów z zagranicy. Współczesne grzebowiska dla zwierząt powstają w naszym kraju od niedawna i mimo że cmentarze dla zwierząt są u nas stosunkowo nowym zjawiskiem, to już teraz można dostrzec ich typowe cechy przestrzenne. Autorka, na co dzień zajmująca się zagadnieniami z dziedziny architektury, starała się opisać i ocenić grzebowiska pod kątem zagadnień z interesującej ją problematyki: cech położenia, układu przestrzennego, wielkości parcel, z jednej strony unifikowania, a z drugiej – indywidualizowania grobów. W trakcie badania zjawiska, jakim są cmentarze dla zwierząt w Polsce, okazało się, że niezaspokojona potrzeba emocjonalna jest głównym motorem sprawczym ich powstawania, ważnym elementem pracy stało się więc omówienie ich genezy i formy własności.
    This article deals with the topic of animal burial sites. The problem was discussed referring to the territory of Poland against the background of examples from abroad. Modern pet cemeteries have been created in our country for a short time, and their issue has not been discussed in any detail so far. Despite the fact that animal cemeteries are a relatively new phenomenon in Poland, it is already possible to notice their typical spatial features. The author, who deals with issues in the field of architecture on a daily basis, tries to describe and evaluate the pet cemeteries from the following angle of interest: location, spatial layout, parcel size, unification, and, on the other hand, the individualization of graves. In the course of the study of the phenomenon of cemeteries for animals in Poland, it turned out that the unsatisfied emotional need is the main driving force behind their formation, so an important element of the work became the analysis of their genesis and form of ownership of pet cemeteries.

    Opis:
    The aim of this study is to describe the phenomenon of pet cemeteries on an example of the Pet Cemetery in Rzędziany, Podlaskie Voivodeship. The material, which was used for the analysis was obtained by ethnographic field studies carried out in the municipality of Tykocin. The article focuses on the aesthetic patterns, as well as on social reception of the cemetery. The design of the graveyard shows the patterns of commemoration of the dead pets and the strength of human-animal bond. As indicated by the research, the idea of the cemetery is rather extraneous for the community members, but the place is slowly taking root in the local cultural landscape.
    Celem artykułu jest próba opisu zjawiska, jakim są cmentarze dla zwierząt, na przykładzie Cmentarza dla Zwierząt w Rzędzianach, w województwie podlaskim. Materiał, który posłużył do analizy, uzyskany został w wyniku etnograficznych badań terenowych przeprowadzonych w gminie Tykocin. Artykuł skupia się na wzorcach estetycznych, a także na społecznej recepcji cmentarza. Stylistyka nekropolii ukazuje wzorce upamiętniania zmarłych zwierząt oraz siłę relacji człowiek-zwierzę. Jak wskazuje materiał etnograficzny, idea cmentarza jest raczej obca dla mieszkańców gminy, lecz miejsce powoli zakorzenia się w lokalnym krajobrazie kulturowym.

    Brief overview of two seasons of archaeological survey and excavation carried out in 2012 and 2013 at the site of Berenike on the Red Sea coast and in two sub-projects in the Eastern Desert: the prehistoric cattle cemetery at Wadi Khashab and the Roman-era emerald mines at Sikait and Nugrus. Highpoints of the work at Berenike included discovery of the Hellenistic fort and fortifications that mark the original settlement of the site in the third quarter of the 3rd century BC, continued clearance of harbor-related structures in the southwestern bay interpreted as the early Roman harbor of Berenike and the uncovering of an earlier phase of the late Roman harbor temple (so-called Lotus Temple) of the 5th–6th century AD in the harbor.

    The report brings a comprehensive summary of archaeological fieldwork and survey carried out in Berenike on the Red Sea coast of Egypt and in the Eastern Desert hinterland over the course of two seasons in 2014 and 2015. The completed magnetic map of the site is discussed in some detail, assessing the potential for future excavations. The report covers the most important discoveries of the two seasons, which include fragments of Middle Kingdom Pharaonic stelae, possibly pushing back the foundation of the harbor, archaeological evidence of a rock-cut watercollection system forming part of the Hellenistic-age fortifications and two inscribed stone bases, one of which records a secretary of an aromatics warehouse at Berenike, discovered undisturbed in the courtyard of the Great Temple of Berenike (also called the Serapis Temple). A previously unknown religious(?) complex was discovered on the western outskirts of the site thanks to work with Corona satellite imagery. In turn, analysis of the magnetic mapping of the city revealed an administrative(?) complex in the northern part of the town; the later, 5th and 6th century layers were examined inside a chamber with niche forming part of this complex. Work also continued in the early Roman harbor, uncovering among others a complete timber ship frame, and a collection of garnets in subsidiary buildings in the late Roman temenos located in the entrance to the southwestern bay.

    Opis:
    The changes in thinking about the world are manifested in linguistic changes. Pet cemetery is a good example to observe the changing relations between humans and animals. Various types of tombstones and the inscriptions they bear, not accompanied by formal regulations or consistent convention – although undoubtedly inspired by the exemplar of human cemetery – are a testament of particular relationships (attachment, friendship, love) that existed between dead pets with their owners. They also document how the social and cultural status of pet companions changes gradually – how the animals are no longer assumed as living beings without souls, and they become persons, rightful family members gaining the right to respect, memory and decent burial. But the change is a process which meets a resistance manifested in linguistic attempts to tear human and animal deaths apart.
    Zmiany w myśleniu o świecie manifestują się w zmianach dokonujących się w języku. Cmentarz dla zwierząt jest dobrym polem do obserwacji zmieniających się ludzko-zwierzęcych relacji. Bardzo różnorodne formy nagrobków i treść widniejących na nich inskrypcji, nieobwarowane formalnymi regulacjami czy jednolitą konwencją – choć niewątpliwie inspirowane wzorcem ludzkiego cmentarza – są świadectwem szczególnych więzi (przywiązania, przyjaźni, miłości), jakie łączyły zmarłe zwierzęta z ich opiekunami. Również świetnie dokumentują to, jak stopniowo zmienia się społeczny i kulturowy status zwierząt towarzyszących człowiekowi – jak przestają być one jedynie pozbawioną duszy żywą własnością, a stają się osobami, pełnoprawnymi członkami rodzin, zyskując prawo do szacunku, pamięci i godnego pochówku. Jednak zmiana ta jest procesem, który budzi opór, przejawiający się w próbach językowego rozdzielenia ludzkiej i zwierzęcej śmierci.
