Opis:
Sources of the Early Byzantine Period describe Christian practices of using oil for medical purposes. These practices were not usual medical procedures. The sources describe the medical use of oil obtained from church lamps or given by clergymen or by holy men, whose prayers were believed to strengthened the “medical” properties of the oil. These practices were used by Christians in many provinces of the Eastern Roman Empire, including Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Bithynia.

controversies over the martyrdom
Opis:
Tertullian in his works referred to controversial issues which had happened during persecution of the first believers of the Christ. The Christianity required from its followers even martyrdom, for which they received a priceless prize: the eternal life. The martyrdom was not ordered but was a free choice and sprang from the willpower of God. Carthaginian firmly objected to the escape during persecution. From conducted analysis of his texts can be seen that his view on this subject changed. In the period of the Catholic faith he supported the escape but converting on Montanizm disregarded it, because given that persecution originated from God, it could not be nothing bad. Particularly he condemned clergymen shirking the martyrdom as it was them that should be a model for faithful and a support in heavy moments of doubt. Carthaginian was a rigorous opponent of buying himself out from the martyrdom. According to Tertullian, since the Jesus laid down his life for all people, there was no price which could equal this act and redeem the man back from the martyrdom. Such a way of avoiding persecuting was unworthy to follow by faithful of Christ.

Opis:
Tertullian held a rigorous opinion about the attitude of martyrs towards the state and people in power. He analyzed the cases of Christians involving in the social life of pagans. Among others, he discussed the issue of military service, the work of teachers and government officials as well as the relationship of Christians to the emperor. The necessity to kill in case of soldiers, to participate in pagan ceremonies and work in government positions were all associated with violation of Christian principles. The faithful were obliged to pray for the well-being of the emperor and of the Roman Empire. Christians’ aversion towards the state increased during their persecutions. They were not good government officials because, due to their faith, they were unable to fully execute all commands and were sentenced to martyrdom in consequence. It can be concluded that Tertullian encouraged withdrawal from the life of the state in order to remain faithful to God.

Arnobius
ancient Christians
Opis:
The Latin quotation in the title of the article ('What joy is there in observing the rivers of blood?') comes from the apologetic work of Arnobius "Against the Heathen" (Adversus nationes). The seventh book of this work contains perhaps the most explicit Christian critique of the Greeks and Romans who sacrificed animals. One of the arguments used by the learned speaker is the suffering of these animals, which were killed unnecessarily because the gods do not require sacrifices from men. Emphasising the fact that suffering is given to the victims and that there is no point in killing of the animals, Arnobius introduces the shocking details of what this sacrificial ritual (killing) was in practice. In this article, I try to draw attention to the fact that in presenting this information, the Christian advocate referred to earlier statements of classical authors such as Pythagoras and Plutarch, who also criticised the common ritual. Although one occasionally hears opinions today that the early Christian thinkers were indifferent to the fate of sacrificial animals, the writer of Sicca Venera affirms that it would be very difficult to apply generalisations, just as it would be very difficult to apply generalisations to the fate of sacrificial animals.just as it is justified to speak of sensitivity and empathy in this case.

Opis:
The article refers about the council, which in ancient Christian communities in Northern Africa constituted lay people. This council is defined by contemporary scholars in Latin as seniores laici. All sources written on the subject this group come from Roman Africa. In the most they were written in the fourth and fifth century. In the light of sources seniores laici appear as the integral part of the organization both the Church of Donatist as and Catholic in Northern Africa. Represented sources are a sufficient proof on their existence. In Church communities they took place between the Church hierarchy and the faithful people. They were chosen by the people. Fulfilling their own duties by them were collaborated with bishops in administering and the safing of the church property. They exercised also functions about the judiciary and disciplinary character which permitted them to control also behavior of their own bishops.

Opis:
This article is devoted to the problem of Emperor Marcus Aurelius' (reigned 161-180 after Christ) attitude and policy towards Christians, based on his famous spiritual diary - which has been preserved in Polish scholarly and cultural literature under the title of "Meditations". The starting point for the deliberations is the commonly accepted observation that Marcus Aurelius was one of the most sensitive, noble and upright men to have sat on the imperial throne in the history of the Roman Empire for several centuries. However, many scholars have been surprised to learn that it was during the reign of this noble emperor-philosopher, a gentle man who was a proponent of Stoicism, which at first sight had so much in common with Christian philosophy, that major persecutions of Christians took place, mainly in Gaul (Lugdunum, today: Lyon) in 177. This article is an attempt to explain the contradiction of how it was possible for a man of such great sensitivity and personal culture to allow the aforementioned acts of repression.
