This article presents a study undertaken to investigate how effectively the “Conversation Wall” project serves to connect between students and the student support program at a Midwestern university. The Conversation Wall project has been launched by using the glass window space located in front of the Center for Student Support Program. It serves as a tool for learning about students’ perceptions and experiences related to their campus as well as social and cultural lives. To conceptualize anonymous texts written on the wall, graffiti studies are applied to this study. Both graffiti and texts written on the wall can be loosely defined as writing or drawings on a publicly accessible surface, and they are considered an important source of data for the analysis of cultural production and language use. A total of 1309 texts were transcribed and subjected to content analysis. The results reveal students’ social and cultural lives, the campus climate, the issues that the students care about, and what they need from their university. This article discusses findings and provides recommendations for further improvement to the Student Success Program.

The article focuses on blogs related to research activities of the academic community. Research-related blogs as components of university websites have developed into an array of sub-genres shaped by specific foci, their authors and the desired audiences. The data set consists of fifty posts from ten blogs of six universities. Drawing upon Swales’ methodology of genre analysis, the study explores the generic structure of the blog posts, reveals the communicative purposes they can fulfil within the landscape of university websites, identifies significant communication strategies, and explores the roles the blogs may serve in communicating science to the diverse audiences they potentially address. The analysis has shown that the blogs help accomplish the general goals of informing about the university and promoting it providing a personalized view and engaging the reader, manifest loose but recurrent generic structuring, and can be vehicles of knowledge dissemination as well as knowledge construction.

Is it possible to look at something without actually noticing it? Is it possible to see something in the picture that is not really there? The answers to these philosophical questions can be obtained by comparing the results of eye-tracking tests combined with interviews based on sociological theories. The answers, however, have more than the philosophical dimension in that they can provide insight into everyday processes of social perception and its application, also for commercial purposes. In the design phase of the present study, we chose a popular advertising folder available for free for the average consumer. While showing the selected photographs to the respondents (all the pictures included people portrayed during everyday activities), we asked them to pay particular attention to the situations presented. Afterwards, each participant took part in a standardised interview. In our view, the conclusions formulated on the basis of the obtained results are relevant not only to the investigated catalogue, but can also be treated as an indicator of how people usually browse through advertisements and what kind of inferences they make about the world on that basis. While most attention should be given to watching the advertisements, we constitute our dreams of a perfect life, environment and the items that furnish it.

W pracy przedstawiono analizę cytowań artykułów opublikowanych w 24 tomach rocznika „Problemy Klimatologii Polarnej” w latach 1992-2014 opracowaną na podstawie bazy Web of Science i serwisu naukowo-informacyjnego Google Scholar. Przeprowadzono również kwerendę takich cytowań w polskich publikacjach zwartych z zakresu geografii fizycznej, ekologii i biologii. Analizy ujawniły dużą liczbę cytowań w czasopismach z tzw. Listy Filadelfijskiej (164) i bardzo dużą liczbę cytowań w czasopismach i wydawnictwach polskich.
The paper presents an analysis of citations of articles published in the yearbook ‘Problems of Polar Climatology’ for the period 1992-2014 developed on the basis of Web of Science and Google Scholar scientific- information service. A query of such citations in Polish shorted publications was also carried out in the field of physical geography, ecology and biology. The Journal is indexed by "Cold Regions Bibliography" and Polish "BazTech". 272 articles by 104 authors were published in 24 volumes of ‘Problems of Polar Climatology’. Research problems of vast majority of works related to the Arctic, including, in particular, Svalbard (133 articles), which was the focus of Polish scientists’ research activities. Issues relating to the Antarctic were discussed in 66 articles and focused mainly on the characteristics of different climatic elements and weather processes in the area of Arctowski Station in the South Shetland Islands. The analysis revealed a large number of citations (164) in journals indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded (Table 1) and a very large number of citations in Polish journals (705) and publications (441) – Table 4. Taking into account very large number of citations, thematically narrow profile of journals and a relatively small group of authors dealing with issues of polar meteorology and climatology in Poland, it can be concluded that this magazine plays an important role in spreading research achievements in this field.

Purpose: to reveal the peculiarities of the formation of «ecological» (contextual, spatial) school of electoral research, characterization of its current state and determine the prospects for the development of this area of electoral studies. The results of the study: it was shown that the formation of the «ecological» school is associated with the expansion of the electoral corps in Western European countries in the second half of the nineteenth century in connection with the introduction of universal suffrage, as well as the strengthening of the role of elections in the political life of Western countries on the basis of representative democracy; determined that the predecessors of the «ecological» direction of electoral research were statistical scientists E. Engel and O. Fokardi, who studied electoral statistics through the prism of political and geographical approach; it is established that the founder of the «ecological» school of electoral research is A. Siegfried, who proposed a contextual («ecological») model of voting analysis, where the key factor determining the electoral position of the voter and his electoral behavior is the environment in which the voter is; proved that the institutionalization of the «ecological» school of electoral research is associated with the activities of F. Gogel, who formulated the basic credo of «ecologicalists» – any research in the field of electoral behavior should be based on comparing election results and factors that may explain these results; it is traced that the further development of the «ecological» school in the second half of the twentieth century – the beginning of the twenty-first century carried out by P. Bois, R. Aron, M. Dogan, R. Heberle, J. Sartori, G. Tingsten, and others. Conclusions: «ecological» (contextual, spatial) school of electoral research is mainly applied; it focuses on the development of statistical methods for the study of aggregated quantitative data for prognostic purposes; political and geographical approach to the analysis of voting results allows to identify spatial changes in voter behavior; prospects of «ecological» approach to the study of electoral behavior are associated with a combination of classical methods of «ecologicalists» with various techniques of applied analysis (including qualitative).
Мета: розкрити особливості формування «екологічної» (контекстуальної, просторової) школи електоральних досліджень, охарактеризувати її сучасний стан та визначити перспективи розвитку цього напряму електоральних досліджень. Результати дослідження: показано, що формування «екологічної» школи пов’язане з розширенням виборчого корпусу в країнах Західної Європи у другій половині ХІХ ст. у зв’язку із запровадженням загального виборчого права, а також як посилення ролі виборів у політичному житті західних країн на основі представницької демократії; визначено, що попередниками «екологічного» напряму електоральних досліджень були вчені-статистики Е. Енгель та О. Фокарді, які досліджували виборчу статистику через призму політико-географічного підходу; встановлено, що засновником «екологічної» школи електоральних досліджень є А. Зігфрід, який запропонував контекстну («екологічну») модель аналізу голосування, де ключовим фактором, що визначає електоральну позицію виборця та його електоральну поведінку, є середовище, в якому перебуває виборець; доведено, що інституалізація «екологічної» школи електоральних досліджень пов’язана з діяльністю Ф. Гогеля, який сформулював основне кредо «екологів» – будь-які дослідження у сфері електоральної поведінки мають базуватися на порівнянні результатів виборів і факторів. що може пояснити ці результати; простежено, що подальший розвиток «екологічної» школи у другій половині ХХ – на початку ХХІ століття здійснювали П. Буа, Р. Арон, М. Доган, Р. Хеберле, Дж. Сарторі, Г. Тінгстен та ін. Висновки: «екологічна» (контекстуальна, просторова) школа електоральних досліджень зосереджена на розробці статистичних методів дослідження агрегованих кількісних даних для прогностичних цілей; політико-географічний підхід до аналізу результатів голосування дозволяє виявити просторові зміни поведінки виборців; перспективи «екологічного» підходу до вивчення електоральної поведінки пов’язані з поєднанням класичних методів «екологістів» з різними прийомами прикладного аналізу (у тому числі якісного).

The human-centric nature of environmental thinking is a highly successful adaptation, which has biological, historical, cultural origins. The dichotomy of anthropocentrism and ecocentrism are what ultimately determine ecological attitudes. This nationally representative study presents how students in Hungarian environmental education bachelor programs view the human’s taxonomic position in the world (hierarchies, kinship), throughout evolution (determining possible directions, distancing from other organisms), the role of human power, and our rights of intervention in the environment. It shows what kind of knowledge students arrive with from public education, how they think about handling confl icts, and what impact their acquired knowledge during university years has on their environmental attitudes. It was found that at least two-thirds of students evaluated natural environmental processes, problemsand their consequences with anthropocentric preferences – in contrast to scientifi cally accepted theses.

Human behaviour researchers argue on self-education matters, which accumulate the complex of unsolved contentious problematic issues, referring to classical antinomies: freedom, socialization, and self-consciousness. There are many controversies concerning the interpretation of the self-education notion in social sciences and corresponding theories. The author of the paper presents those theories and explains approaches to self-education, as they have inspired countless pedagogical and psychological issues. Concurrently he underlines different activities, which illustrate two contrasting theoretical standpoints. The first one treats self-education as perfectio prima. It happens when the striving to perfection is realized by Socratic (“self-oriented”) model. Such an approach is the only motivation of individual activity and the aim in itself. On the other hand, the second perspective understands self-education as the Promethean (“out-oriented”) activity. In the light of its assumptions, it is a kind of spontaneous, nonintentional man’s activities aimed to transform reality out of oneself, the surrounding world, and the environment of life. Here, self-education is the perfectio secunda category, which means that the individual self-educates itself by reaching excellence per accidens. Such distinction is crucial for project constructing and empirical research questing.

The signicance of a research article abstract has recently turned the focus of linguistics on the Genre analysis of abstract articles. Taking into account this wide research topic, this study aims at investigating the micro structures in the linguistics and engineering abstracts. In the previous studies, this comparison has not been addressed by the researches, hence the present study aims to ll in the gap. The corpus contained 30 abstracts, 15 of linguistics and 15 of engineering. The micro analysis was carried out on the basis of Swales and Feak's (2009) model. The results revealed that there was no very signicant dierence between the linguistics and engineering abstracts at the micro level. This study is deemed to be benecial for the researchers as it provides a framework of analyzing two dierent disciplines in terms of their abstracts.

This paper uses a co-citation analysis to examine the research on L2 vocabulary acquisition that was published in 1985. This year seems to mark a kind of transition in the field. Unlike the earlier years analysed in this series of papers, 1985 shows signs of a coherent L2 vocabulary research front developing. The number of papers that qualify for inclusion is much greater than in previous years, and the analysis suggests that recognisable research themes are beginning to be clearly articulated.

This paper uses a co-citation analysis to examine the research on L2 vocabulary acquisition that was published in 1989. Two analyses are presented. The first is a detailed account of the 1989 research on its own terms. The second analysis places this work in a larger context by looking at research published in a five-year window covering 1985–89. The analyses identify important themes in the research and significant sources who are influencing the way the research is developing at this time. The main features of this work are the substantial growth in dictionary and corpus research, and the emergence of Paul Nation as the Most Significant Source in 1989.

Abstract Since at least forty years accelerators of charged particles no longer belong to nuclear physics exclusively. This is especially true for accelerators at energies below 1 GeV. The vast majority of accelerators in this energy range is used for materials research and medicine. In materials research the applications are principally twofold: modifications of solids and surface layer microanalysis. Two most important challenges for materials research at the beginning of XXI century as determined by the Materials Research Society are: development of materials able to repair human body and development of materials for new electronic devices able to cope with the enormous amount of information to be stored and transmitted. The role of accelerators with regard to the challenges of modern technology will be discussed.

Niniejszy artykuł jest poświęcony analizie Polskich oraz Niemieckich referatów nadesłanych na konferencje Europejskiego Stowarzyszenia Badaczy Edukacji Dorosłych (ESREA). Użyto tutaj metody „program analysis”, dzięki której wykazano, że Polscy i Niemieccy naukowcy aktywnie uczestniczą w Europejskim forum dotyczącym badań nad edukacją dorosłych. Jednakże można zaobserwować tutaj pewne wady i braki. Niniejszy artykuł proponuje i omawia sugerowane zmiany.

The study of adult participation in education and the examination of the factors that influence their final decision is one of the most critical issues in the field. This article summarises the findings of empirical research on adult engagement in evening schools in Greece, with an emphasis on evening schools in the Greek islands. Evening schools started in Greece around 60 years ago. These schools, now part of the secondary education system, are primarily aimed towards those who work during the day (mostly adults). Their goal is to provide the opportunity for adults who, for some reason, interrupted their studies in Gymnasium (lower secondary/middle school) or Lyceum (upper secondary/high school) to complete it. There has never been a study on residents of Greek islands who participate in educational programmes of this nature. The presented research investigates factors that impact adult participation in all evening schools administratively situated in Greek islands. Between February and May 2022, 268 adult students participated in the study by completing a survey questionnaire that was quantitatively evaluated using SPSSs. The sample comes from all the islands where evening Lyceums operate. To determine the elements that influence participation, the data was submitted to component analysis using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) approach. Four of the discovered factors are deemed critical (self-assessment, attitudes towards education, educational perspective and expectations), while others seem somewhat relevant and have a role.

This article explores the use of biographies in qualitative research about collective memory. It is argued that commemorative ceremonies, as well as changes appearing in macro-level structures within the time-span of individuals’ life histories need to be included when analyzing biographies in collective memory studies. The article suggests enhancement of the biographical case reconstruction method (Rosenthal 1993; 2004) with two additional stages: analysis of the experienced past with more emphasis on socio-historical transformations; and inclusion and analysis of the ethnographical data collected from collective mnemonic practices. By providing empirical data from the research conducted with political exiles in Germany, these analytical steps of the method of socio-historical analysis are demonstrated in detail.

Opis:
W artykule zamieszczono analizę wpływu wybranych rozwiązań organizacyjnych na czas i koszt realizacji przedsięwzięcia budowlanego. Opisano przedsięwzięcie, które było przedmiotem analizy, zaproponowano metodykę badań oraz zamieszczono wyniki obliczeń i ich analizę. W analizie kosztów ograniczono się do kosztów pracy zasobów odnawialnych, a mianowicie pracy ludzi.
The article presents an analysis of the influence of selected organizational solutions on time and implementation cost of a construction project. It describes the project, which was the subject of analysis, proposes a research methodology and presents the results of calculations and analysis. The cost analysis is limited to labour costs of renewable resources, namely human labour.
