Opis:
A new albanerpetontid, Wesserpeton evansae gen. et sp. nov., from the Early Cretaceous (Barremian) Wessex Formation of the Isle of Wight, southern England, is described. Wesserpeton is established on the basis of a unique combination of primitive and derived characters relating to the frontals and jaws which render it distinct from currently recognized albanerpetontid genera: Albanerpeton (Late Cretaceous to Pliocene of Europe, Early Cretaceous to Paleocene of North America and Late Cretaceous of Asia); Celtedens (Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous of Europe); and Anoualerpeton (Middle Jurassic of Europe and Early Cretaceous of North Africa). Although Wesserpeton exhibits considerable intraspecific variation in characters pertaining to the jaws and, to a lesser extent, frontals, the new taxon differs from Celtedens in the shape of the internasal process and gross morphology of the frontals in dorsal or ventral view. It differs from Anoualerpeton in the lack of pronounced heterodonty of dentary and maxillary teeth; and in the more medial loca− tion and direction of opening of the suprapalatal pit. The new taxon cannot be referred to Albanerpeton on the basis of the morphology of the frontals. Wesserpeton currently represents the youngest record of Albanerpetontidae in Britain.

Opis:
The Early Triassic record of the large capitosaurid amphibian genus Parotosuchus is supplemented by new material from fluvial deposits of Wióry, southern Poland, corresponding in age to the Detfurth Formation (Spathian, Late Olenekian) of the Germanic Basin. The skull of the new capitosaurid shows an “intermediate” morphology between that of Paroto− suchus helgolandicus from the Volpriehausen−Detfurth Formation (Smithian, Early Olenekian) of Germany and the slightly younger Parotosuchus orenburgensis from European Russia. These three species may represent an evolutionary lineage that underwent a progressive shifting of the jaw articulation anteriorly. The morphology of the Polish form is dis− tinct enough from other species of Parotosuchus to warrant erection of a new species. The very large mandible of Parot− osuchus ptaszynskii sp. nov. indicates that this was one of the largest tetrapod of the Early Triassic. Its prominent anatomi− cal features include a triangular retroarticular process and an elongated base of the hamate process.

Re−investigation of the skull roof in Metoposaurus diagnosticus from the German Middle Keuper revealed that in contrast to previous opinions, the lacrimal bone in this species enters the orbital margin. The same pattern is demonstrated by the skulls of a newly discovered metoposaur from the Keuper of Krasiejów in Poland. The difference in the shape of the parietal between the population from Krasiejów and the type population of Metoposaurus diagnosticus enables the discrimination of two separate subspecies within Metoposaurus diagnosticus. For the specimens from the Late Carnian of Drawno Beds at Krasiejów, Poland and its lateral equivalents Lehrberg Beds at Stuttgart−Sonnenberg and Kieselsandstein at Fichtenberg, Germany, a new chronosubspecies Metoposaurus diagnosticus krasiejowensis is erected. The new subspecies differs from the older nominal subspecies M. diagnosticus diagnosticus in having a shorter and wider prepineal part of the parietal. If one accepts that the nominal subspecies is the ancestor of M. krasiejowensisthe change in the shape of the parietal would be a reversal of the trend towards elongating postorbital part of the skull observed in ancestors of the metoposaurids. It seems that the skull development in ontogeny changed after the anterior shift of the orbits occurred in the phylogenetic history of the metoposaurids. The difference in ornamentation of the interclavicle between European Metoposaurus and North American genera is corroborated by Polish material.

Opis:
The holotype of the brachyopoid temnospondyl Hadrokkosaurus bradyi, represented by a right lower jaw ramus, is re−examined based upon new data and revision of various morphological features. Additional fragmentary jaw material referred to this species is briefly described. Prominent features are a large postsymphyseal foramen that is anteriorly open, and prearticular and surangular buttresses for support of the articular. Brachyopoid characters include a long and robust postglenoid area formed by surangular and prearticular, anterior and posterior keels on at least some marginal dentary teeth, and subtriangular outline of the adductor fossa in dorsal view. Five features of the holotype ramus, long thought to be at odds with its brachyopoid or temnospondyl nature, are critically re−evaluated. A phylogenetic analysis of lower jaw characters in temnospondyls retrieves most of the clades found in more comprehensive data sets, but the statistical node support is low. Brachyopoids are monophyletic, with Hadrokkosaurus emerging as their most basal taxon.

Opis:
The Late Carboniferous amphibian genus Limnerpeton Fritsch, 1881 is revised on the basis of the type specimens of the eight original species described by Fritsch using material from Nýřany, Třemošná and Kounov, now in the Czech Republic. The type species Limnerpeton modestum is a nomen dubium restricted to a mandible that almost certainly belongs to an amphibamid temnospondyl but is not critically diagnostic. “Limnerpeton” laticeps and “Limnerpeton” macrolepis lectotypes are both small individuals of the same taxon as the later described Mordex calliprepes Steen, 1938 and thus form part of the hypodigm of Mordex laticeps comb. nov. “Limnerpeton” elegans is now Limnogyrinus elegans and is a member of the temnospondyl family Micromelerpetontidae. “Limnerpeton” obtusatum is a specimen of the microsaur Microbrachis pelikani. “Limnerpeton” dubium is an indeterminate tetrapod, probably either a temnospondyl or a pelycosaur. “Limnerpeton” difficile is a nomen dubium but the type is probably a small specimen of the tuditanomorph microsaur Crinodon limnophyes. “Limnerpeton” caducum is almost certainly a specimen of the ophiderpetontid aïstopod Oestocephalus granulosus. Several other described small temnospondyls from Nýřany are discussed and shown to be specimens of either Limnogyrinus elegans, Mordex laticeps or Amphibamidae incertae sedis. The tetrapod fauna at Nýřany includes four dissorophoid temnospondyls as proposed by Milner (1986) but with two changes in nomenclature. They comprise the branchiosaurid Branchiosaurus salamandroides, the micromelerpetontid Limnogyrinus elegans, the amphibamid Platyrhinops cf. lyelli and the primitive trematopid Mordex laticeps. These represent four of the five major dissorophoid families and demonstrate that the group had already diversified by the late Westphalian.

Opis:
To evaluate stratigraphic evidence for the time of origin of the clade of extant amphibians (Lissamphibia), we attempt to establish a confidence interval on the lower bound of the stratigraphic range of this clade. This is based on the stratigraphic distribution of 1207 fossiliferous localities that have yielded lissamphibians, the relative area of sedimentary rocks from various periods (upper Paleozoic to present) exposed on the continents, and ten exponential−growth models of lissamphibian diversity that differ by the assumed effects of three major biological crises and the assumed starting times of lissamphibian diversification. The results suggest a more recent origin of Lissamphibia than advocated in most recent molecular studies. They are also more compatible with monophyly than with polyphyly of the extant amphibians, but heavily depend on poorly constrained assumptions about lissamphibian extinction rates during biological crises. Counts of lissamphibian diversity through time that consider ghost lineages and stage durations show moderate declines across the Cretaceous–Paleogene and Oligocene–Miocene boundaries.

The Temnospondyli are a large and diverse group of stemtetrapods (sensu Laurin and Reisz 1997) known from the Early Carboniferous to the Early Cretaceous; their remains have been found on all continents, from Greenland to Antarctica. The Metoposauridae are a short−ranging temnospondyl group recorded only from the Late Triassic; they are characterized by an anterior position of the orbits, a broad parasphenoid and a large quadrate foramen. However, unclear is the taxonomic value of the external location of tusks on the dentary. Our analysis of tooth rows in Metoposaurus diagnosticus krasiejowensis from the Triassic (Late Carnian) of Krasiejów (Silesia, SW Poland) shows that the external location of tusks on the dentary is not a synapomorphy for Metoposauridae but a character of great intraspecific variability. Variability of the arrangement of the internal tooth row on the upper jaw has also been observed.

Opis:
In the present research the issue of mortality of amphibians on traffic routes in Poznan City was undertaken. Moreover, the attention was paid to the capabilities to reduce amphibian mortality on roads. The study included nine previously designated positions that are located in Poznan. On the basis of field investigations directions of mapped migration of amphibians at selected stations were shown and a barrier which prevents migration of amphibians to the place of their reproduction was determined. Mortality, which was presented during the spring migration on the investigation areas, was identified and estimated. Through the field investigation it has also been found wintering and reproduction places of amphibians at selected stations. Amphibian mortality was observed in 3 of 9 investigation areas. On the object No. 2 and No. 4 the highest number of dying migrants were observed during migration to reproduction places (object No. 2 about 900 cases of species common toad Bufo bufo L. and common frog Rana temporaria L., object No. 4 about 150 cases of common frog). These results may be a basis for the decision to start active protection of amphibians in the places where many individuals of this class die in large numbers during the spring and autumn migrations.

Opis:
The key difference between amniotes (reptiles, birds and mammals) and anamniotes (amphibians in the broadest sense of the word) is usually considered to be the amniotic egg, or a skin impermeable to water. We propose that the change in the mode of lung ventilation from buccal pumping to costal (rib-based) ventilation was equally, if not more important, in the evolution of tetrapod independence from the water. Costal ventilation would enable superior loss of carbon dioxide via the lungs: only then could cutaneous respiration be abandoned and the skin made impermeable to water. Additionally efficient carbon dioxide loss might be essential for the greater level of activity of amniotes. We examine aspects of the morphology of the heads, necks and ribs that correlate with the mode of ventilation. Anamniotes, living and fossil, have relatively broad heads and short necks, correlating with buccal pumping, and have immobile ribs. In contrast, amniotes have narrower, deeper heads, may have longer necks, and have mobile ribs, in correlation with costal ventilation. The stem amniote Diadectes is more like true amniotes in most respects, and we propose that the changes in the mode of ventilation occurred in a stepwise fashion among the stem amniotes. We also argue that the change in ventilatory mode in amniotes related to changes in the postural role of the epaxial muscles, and can be correlated with the evolution of herbivory.

A third albanerpetontid genus, Anoualerpeton gen. nov., is erected for two new species: An. unicussp. nov. (type species) from the Early Cretaceous (Berriasian) of Morocco and An. priscus sp. nov. from the Middle Jurassic (late Bathonian) of England. Anoualerpeton differs from the exclusively Laurasian albanerpetontid genera Albanerpeton (Early Cretaceous– Paleocene, North America; Miocene, Europe) and Celtedens (?Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, Europe) in a unique combination of primitive and derived character states of the jaws and azygous frontals. Monophyly of Anoualerpeton is supported by two synapomorphies of the maxilla and dentary (occlusal margin convex in labial outline and teeth strongly heterodont in size anteriorly) that are convergent with an unrelated, relatively derived Late Cretaceous species of Albanerpeton from North America. The two species of Anoualerpeton differ in character states of the premaxilla and azygous frontals. Cladistic analysis of 20 characters scored for ten albanerpetontid taxa postulates Anoualerpeton as the sister−taxon of Albanerpeton + Celtedens. The sister−pair of Albanerpeton + Celtedensis founded on one or, perhaps, two premaxillary synapomorphies. Anoualerpeton unicus documents the only known Gondwanan occurrence for the Albanerpetontidae and provides a minimum age of basal Cretaceous for the establishment of the clade in Africa. Characters of the mandible, vertebrae, and limbs support the interpretation that Ramonellus (Aptian; Israel) is a caudate, not an albanerpetontid.
