Opis:
We present evidence for the uppermost Jurassic-lowest Cretaceous interval in Crimea, coastal southern Ukraine. Three facies zones are distinguished in the upper Dvuyakornaya and the Mayak formations of the eastern Crimean Peninsula: basinal, slope and toe-of-slope zones. In this interval we identify the lowest Berriasian Jacobi and Grandis subzones of authors, in expanded form, exceeding 160 metres in thickness. We present new magnetostratigraphic interpretations, and identify two normal and two reversed polarity intervals, assigned to M19n, M18r, M18n and M17r, with M19n2n, M19n1r and M19n1n identified in the uppermost Dvuyakornaya Formation. In the Mayak Formation we record the top of M19n.1n, with M18r, M18n and a thick M17r above. In these two formations component calpionellid species have been identified which characterise the Alpina, Ferasini and Elliptica subzones (Calpionella Zone). In M19n, the FADs of the calcareous nannofossils Hexalithus strictus, Cruciellipsis cuvillieri, Nannoconus wintereri, N. steinmannii minor and N. kamptneri minor are found, which is consistent with other Tethyan regions. N. steinmannii steinmannii and N. kamptneri kamptneri first appear in M18r at Ili Burnu . Specimens of the apparently Tithonian foraminiferan index Anchispirocyclina lusitanica are found, but in the Berriasian lower Mayak Formation.

Opis:
Field work has resulted in the recognition of a previously unknown outcrop in the vicinity of the Zengővárkony lime-kilns (Mecsek Mountains, South Hungary) which has provided a remarkably rich, but poorly preserved, uppermost Oxfordian – earliest Kimmeridgian fauna dominated by ammonites probably representing the Hypselum–Bimammatum zones. This is the first description and illustration of Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian ammonites from the Mecsek Mountains. The cephalopod fauna comprises Phylloceras div. sp., Holcophylloceras div. sp., Sowerbyceras sp., Lytoceras sp., Lissoceratoides erato, Trimarginites cf. trimarginatus, Glochiceras (Coryceras) cf. microdomum, Subdiscosphinctes sp., ?Wegelea sp., Passendorferiinae gen. et sp. ind., ?Orthosphinctes sp., Euaspidoceras cf. radisense, Aspidoceras sp., A. cf. binodum, Physodoceras sp. ex gr. altenense-wolfi, Lamellaptychus sp., Laevaptychus sp. ex gr. hoplisus-obliquus. The fauna has a Mediterranean character (55% of Phylloceratidae and Lytoceratidae) and is similar to the Tethyan assemblages of the Venetian Alps (Italy), and Palma de Mallorca. The spirochaete tube worm Spiraserpula spirolinites is also the first record from the Mecsek Mountains. The Saccocoma wackestone-packstone microfacies is recorded with benthic foraminifera (Lenticulina sp. and Spirillina sp.) indicating well oxygenated and nutrient-rich bottom conditions.

Opis:
By comparison with the Lower Cretaceous of central and SE Poland, that of NW Poland (the Pomeranian, Szczecin, and Mogilno-Łódź troughs) has scarce biostratigraphic data. But, despite the lack of Lower Cretaceous exposure in the NW Polish Lowlands, borehole data, including borehole-cores and geophysical logs, allow analysis of complete successions. We refine the stratigraphic units using parallel studies of ammonites, microfauna and calcareous nannoplankton collected from the same intervals, and by correlating age-defined intervals with geophysical logs. Ostracod zones F to A are documented by the presence of ostracod assemblages representing the interval between the Upper Tithonian (ostracod zone F) and the lower part of the Upper Berriasian (ostracod zones E to A). The fragmentary and poorly preserved ammonites allowed only for distinguishing the uppermost Middle and Upper Berriasian (Ryazanian), while the informal subdivisions from the central part of the basin could not be identified unequivocally. Nannoplankton recognized in the succession analysed was very rare due to shallow marine facies of the strata. Only one nannoplankton zone was recognized in the lower part of the succession studied: the CC2 Stradneria crenulata Zone (uppermost Middle and Upper Berriasian and lowermost Valanginian). An additional study only on nannoplankton enabled recognition of certain boreal taxa typical of the BC2 zone of the Uppermost Riazanian. Valaginian ammonites occur in core material located closer to the central part of the trough. Some planktonic foraminiferal species indicate the Lower Aptian. Some Upper Cretaceous nannoplankton zones were also recognized: the CC9 Eiffellithus turriseiffeli (Uppermost Albian to Lower Cenomanian) and UC0, UC1-2 and UC3 zones which correspond to the Upper Albian and Lower as well as Middle Cenomanian. The sequence stratigraphic interpretation was based on geophysical logs with the application of gamma-ray, neutron-gamma, spontaneous potential and resistivity logging, as well as caliper logging. These studies allowed recognition and correlation of sedimentary sequences within the part of the sedimentary basin analysed, characterized by a similar cyclic pattern of geological phenomena described using depositional sequences as in the central and SE part of the Polish Basin. Third-order depositional sequences with maximum flooding surfaces were distinguished. Effective correlation of depositional cycles with biostratigraphy and with the global sea level curve was demonstrated for several boundaries, confirming the applicability of this method for the Polish part of the the Central-European Basin. Other boundaries recognized that are not correlatable and shifted relative to Haq’s curve may reflect autogenous factors (e.g., local tectonics) overlapping with the global changes controlled by allogenic processes

A juvenile specimen of the ammonite Pseudaspidoceras from the Early Turonian of the Goulmima area in the Province of Er-Rachida in south-eastern Morocco shows clear evidence of predation by a tooth-bearing verte-brate. Most of the body chamber is missing, as a result of post-burial compactional crushing. The adapertural part of the shell on the left flank of the surviving fragment of body chamber bears six circular punctuations; the right flank four. These are interpreted as the product of a single bite by a mosasauroid, probably a Tethysaurus. The taxonomy of the Goulmima Pseudaspidoceras is discuused in an appendix.

In the Cerro Mallín Quemado area (Sierra de la Vaca Muerta) the three members of the Vaca Muerta Formation (Portada Covunco, Los Catutos and Pichi Moncol) can be recognized, including the whole of the Tithonian rock-record. The ammonite fauna does not show significant differences with respect to that of the nearby locality Pampa Tril, but the record of faunal horizons is patchier. Eighteen species of ammonites were recorded through the studied sections, covering the whole of the Andean Tithonian. The current chronostratigraphic zonation of the Andean Tithonian is briefly discussed, updated and correlated with the most recent literature. From the current succession of ammonite bio-horizons previously defined in the basin, only three (picunleufuense alpha, picunleufuense beta and falculatum) were recognized definitely. Four other bio-horizons (perlaevis, erinoides, internispinosum alpha and vetustum) were recognized only tentatively, because the typical assemblages of morphotypes (morpho-species) were not clearly or completely recognized. The current regional time-correlation chart dated by the ammonite bio-horizons of the Neuquén Basin along a 70°W transect is updated with the results of the present study and additional information recently obtained from other localities

Opis:
The present paper focuses on the evolutionary dynamics of ammonites from sections along the Russian Pacific coast during the midand Late Cretaceous. Changes in ammonite diversity (i.e., disappearance [extinction or emigration], appearance [origination or immigration], and total number of species present) constitute the basis for the identification of the main bio−events. The regional diversity curve reflects all global mass extinctions, faunal turnovers, and radiations. In the case of the Pacific coastal regions, such bio−events (which are comparatively easily recognised and have been described in detail), rather than first or last appearance datums of index species, should be used for global correlation. This is because of the high degree of endemism and provinciality of Cretaceous macrofaunas from the Pacific region in general and of ammonites in particular.

Opis:
Lower and Middle Cenomanian ammonite assemblages have been collected on a bed-by-bed basis from localities at Vohipaly and Mahaboboka, Madagascar, as well as from outcrops around Berekata, all in the Morondava Basin, southwest Madagascar. These collections demonstrate the presence of the upper Lower Cenomanian Mantelliceras dixoni Zone and the lower Middle Cenomanian Cunningtoniceras inerme Zone of the north-western European standard sequence. These records indicate that the striking anomalies in the zonal assemblages of the classic divisions of the Madagascan Cenomanian are based on mixed assemblages, rather than a succession that differs radically from that elsewhere in the world. The dixoni Zone fauna is: Desmoceras cf. latidorsatum (Michelin, 1838), Pachydesmoceras kossmati Matsumoto, 1987, Forbesiceras sp., F. baylissiWright & Kennedy, 1984, F. largilliertianum (d'Orbigny, 1841), Mantelliceras cantianum Spath, 1926a, M. dixoni Spath, 1926b, M. mantelli (J. Sowerby, 1814), M. picteti Hyatt, 1903, M. saxbii (Sharpe, 1857), Sharpeiceras sp., S. falloti (Collignon, 1931), S. mocambiquense (Choffat, 1903), S. cf. florencae Spath, 1925, Acompsoceras renevieri (Sharpe, 1857), A. tenue Collignon, 1964, Calycoceras sp., Mrhiliceras lapparenti (Pervinquičre, 1907), Mariella (Mariella) stolizcai (Collignon, 1964), Hypoturrilites taxyfabreae (Collignon, 1964), Turrilites scheuchzerianus Bosc, 1801, Sciponoceras cucullatum Collignon, 1964, and Sciponoceras antanimangaensis (Collignon, 1964). The presence of Calycoceras in a Lower Cenomanian association represents a precocious appearance of a genus typically Middle and Upper Cenomanian in occurrence, and matches records from Tunisia. The inerme Zone yields a more restricted assemblage: Pachydesmoceras kossmati, Forbesiceras baylissi, Acanthoceras sp. juv., Cunningtoniceras cunningtoni (Sharpe, 1855) and Hypoturrilites taxyfabreae.

Opis:
The most distinctive and important element of the hydrostatic organ of ammonoids and nautiloids is the siphuncular tube. It consists of mineral and organic segments (so−called connecting rings). The connecting ring of ammonites never preserves its original organic matter in the mineralized state, usually having undergone diagenetic phosphatisation, more rarely, calcification, or even complete loss. Our knowledge about its original ultrastructure is based upon comparison with Recent Nautilus and phosphatised or calcified ammonite fossils. We show that depending on the taphonomic history, both calcium phosphate and calcite can participate in the diagenesis of the connecting ring wall. Under standard light microscopy, the phosphatised elements are indistinguishable from the calcified ones. Both are dark brown in colour, due to an excess of carbon. The structure of the phosphatised siphuncle does not closely replicate the structure of its organic elements. This casts doubts on conclusions of other authors who described a complex porous structure in ammonite siphuncles, which is completely dissimilar to the siphuncular structure of Recent Nautilus and suggests that this organ functioned differently in ammonites. SEM observations using a BSE detector on the calcified parts of the walls of connecting rings revealed a multilayered structure with perpendicular elements connecting particular layers, resembling the structure of a stacked nacreous layer.

Opis:
A section containing the Cretaceous/Paleogene (= Cretaceous/Tertiary) boundary in Monmouth County, New Jersey, preserves a record of ammonites extending from the end of the Cretaceous into possibly the beginning of the Danian. The section includes the upper part of the Tinton Formation and lower part of the Hornerstown Formation. The top of the Tinton Formation is represented by a richly fossiliferous unit (the Pinna Layer) that contains many bivalves in life position as well as ammonite jaws preserved inside body chambers. Ammonites include Pachydiscus (Neodesmoceras) mokotibensis, Sphenodiscus lobatus, Eubaculites carinatus, E. latecarinatus, Discoscaphites iris, D. sphaeroidalis, D. minardi, and D. jerseyensis. The Pinna Layer probably represents a relatively short interval of time lasting tens to hundreds of years; it is conformably overlain by the Burrowed Unit, which contains a single fragment of Discoscaphites sp. and several fragments of E. latecarinatus, as well as several isolated specimens of ammonite jaws including two of Eubaculites. Examination of the mode of preservation of the ammonites and jaws suggests that they were fossilized during deposition of the Burrowed Unit and were not reworked from older deposits. Based on the ammonites and dinoflagellates in the Pinna Layer and the Burrowed Unit, these strata traditionally would be assigned to the uppermost Maastrichtian, corresponding to calcareous nannofossil Subzone CC26b. However, a weak iridium anomaly (500–600 pg/g) is present at the base of the Pinna Layer, which presumably represents the record of the bolide impact. Correlation with the iridium layer at the Global Stratotype Section and Point at El Kef, Tunisia, would, therefore, imply that these assemblages are actually Danian, provided that the iridium anomaly is in place and the ammonites and dinoflagellates are not reworked. If the iridium anomaly is in place, or even if it has migrated downward from the top of the Pinna Layer, the ammonites would have survived the impact at this site for a brief interval of time lasting from a few days to hundreds of years.
