Opis:
The paper analyses the variability of the methodology of collecting samples of endotoxins from the air in the premises and the vicinity of objects of waste management and wastewater treatment infrastructure, methods of their preparation, determination of endotoxin content, and results of research to date. The high sensitivity of analytical methods enables the analysis of the concentration of endotoxins in air samples with a small volume. After freezing, they can be stored for a long time. The effectiveness of extraction of endotoxins from bioaerosol samples can be improved by adding Tween 20 or Tween 80 to water. So far, factors determining the variability of concentrations of endotoxins in the air in the premises and the vicinity of objects of waste management infrastructure were determined. Further research in the scope is necessary. This will allow the determination of acceptable levels of endotoxin in the future. The impact of endotoxins on human health and the specificity of sewage and waste management must also be taken into account.

A system for measurements of particulate matter in the ambient air, employing beta absorption instrument AMIZ-2007 with wireless communication facilities based on GPRS technology, is presented. Uncertainty of measurements caused by the counting statistics was analyzed and it was found that at least 3 h of sampling time is needed to achieve coefficient of variation lower than 20% for the average concentration of particulate matter in the ambient air exceeding 10 μg/m3. Application of a C-14 beta ray source instead of Pm-147 improves sensitivity of the measurement ca. two times. Some results of on-line operation of the system with PM10 and PM2.5 samplers are also shown.

Traffic-related emissions, apart from emissions from fuel combustion for heating purposes, significantly deteriorate air quality in cities. The above mainly concerns areas located close to busy traffic routes. According to epidemiological studies, traffic-related emissions have an adverse health effect. This specifically affects commuters (drivers and car passengers) as well as pedestrians. The aim of this study was to determine the variations of particle number and mass concentrations along a busy road in Lublin, Poland and their impact on the particle exposure for commuters and pedestrians. On-route and fixed-site measurements were performed in the summer (June) with a focus on peak and off-peak traffic hours and road sections with low and high traffic intensity. During peak hours, the average number concentration of ultrafine particles (PN0.1) in the road section near 4-way traffic intersections (TIs) was about 2 times higher than during off-peak hours. The average mass concentration of fine particles (PM2.5) was also approximately twice as high than in off-peak hours. Similar relations were found for other measured aerosol particles as well as with respect to particle exposure. The obtained results indicate the need for further extended research on traffic-related emissions and exposure and the ways of limiting them.

This study identified the spatial distribution pattern of the ambient air quality in the Yogyakarta Urban Area. It was performed to determine the distribution pattern of SO2, CO, and NO2 concentrations for 2016–2019 (pre-pandemic) and 2020 (during pandemic). Furthermore, the spatial analysis was performed using the Inverse Distance Weighting interpolation method. This study proved that spatial modeling using this method has good accuracy, and it is easier to map the distribution pattern of ambient air quality. In 2020, most of the locations met the quality standard (62.64%). As a result, the SO2 and CO parameters immediately showed that most conditions are satisfactory. In 2016, the SO2 parameters met the quality standards at 74.24% of locations. In 2020, the number increased to 85.71%. In addition, the CO parameter reached the quality standard at 81.82% of locations in 2016 and a perfect level of 100% in 2020. This occurred due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic because most human and business activities decreased drastically. Therefore, all studies can be used as the basis for air quality modeling and post-COVID-19 predictions. This study is also important as a policy material in the monitoring and management system of ambient air quality in urban areas.

Opis:
Objectives There are a few accepted and intensively applied statistical methods used to study associations of ambient air pollution with health conditions. Among the most popular methods applied to assess short term air health effects are case-crossover (using events) and time-series methodologies (using counts). A few other techniques for studying counts of events have been proposed, including the Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMM). One suggested GLMM technique uses cluster structures based on natural embedded hierarchies: days are nested in the days of a week (dow), which, in turn, are nested in months and months in years (< dow, month, years >). Material and Methods In this study the authors considered clusters with hierarchical structures in a form of < dow, 14-days, year >, where the 14-days hierarchy determines 7 clusters composed of 2 days (the same days) of a week (2 Mondays, 2 Tuesdays, etc.), in 1 year. In this work the authors proposed hierarchical chained clusters in which 2 days of a week are grouped as follows: (first, second), (second, third), (third, fourth) and so on. Such an approach allows determination of an additional series of the slopes on the clusters (second, third), (fourth, fifth), etc., i.e., estimation of the coefficients for other configurations of air pollutant levels. The authors considered a series of 2 point chained clusters covering a year. In such a construction each cluster has one common data point (day) with another one. Results The authors estimated coefficients (slopes) related to the ambient ozone exposure (mortality) and to 3 selected air pollutants (particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ozone) combined into index and considered as health risk exposure (emergency department (ED) visits). The generated results were compared to the estimations obtained from the time-series method and the time-stratified case-crossover method applied to the same data. Conclusions The proposed statistical method, based on the chained hierarchical clusters (< dow, 14-days, year >), generated results with shorter confidence intervals than the other methods.

Objectives The objective of this study was to present a technique for estimating the effect of ambient air pollution mix on health outcomes. Material and Methods We created a technique of indexing air pollution mix as a cause of the increased odds of health problems. As an illustrative example, we analyzed the impact of pollution on the frequency of emergency department (ED) visits due to colitis among young patients (age < 15 years, N = 11 110). Our technique involves 2 steps. First, we considered 6 ambient air pollutants (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone, and 2 measures of particulate matter) treating each pollutant as a single exposure. Odds ratios (ORs) for ED visits associated with a standard increase (interquartile range – IQR) in the pollutants levels were calculated using the case-crossover technique. The ORs and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were also found for lagged exposures (for lags 1–9 days). Second, we defined a Health Air Study Index (HASI) to represent the combined impact of the 6 air pollutants. Results We obtained positive and statistically significant results for individual air pollutants and among them the following estimations: OR = 1.06 (95% CI: 1.02–1.1, NO₂ lag 3, IQR = 12.8 ppb), OR = 1.04 (95% CI: 1.01–1.07, SO₂ lag 4, IQR = 2.3 ppb), OR = 1.04 (95% CI: 1–1.06, PM lag 3, IQR = 6.2 μg/m³). Among the re-calculated ORs with the HASI values as an exposure, the highest estimated value was OR = 1.37 (95% CI: 1.12–1.68, for 1 unit of the HASI, lag 3). Conclusions The proposed index (HASI) allows to confirm the pattern of associations for lags obtained for individual air pollutants. In the presented example the used index (HASI) indicates the strongest relation with the exposure lagged by 3 days.

Objectives: A large body of evidence has documented that air pollutants have adverse effect on human health as well as on the environment. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was an association between outdoor concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and a daily number of hospital admissions due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in Novi Sad, Serbia among patients aged above 18. Material and Methods: The investigation was carried out during over a 3-year period (from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2009) in the area of Novi Sad. The number (N = 10 469) of daily CVD (ICD-10: I00-I99) hospital admissions was collected according to patients' addresses. Daily mean levels of NO₂ and SO₂, measured in the ambient air of Novi Sad via a network of fixed samplers, have been used to put forward outdoor air pollution. Associations between air pollutants and hospital admissions were firstly analyzed by the use of the linear regression in a single polluted model, and then trough a single and multi-polluted adjusted generalized linear Poisson model. Results: The single polluted model (without confounding factors) indicated that there was a linear increase in the number of hospital admissions due to CVD in relation to the linear increase in concentrations of SO₂ (p = 0.015; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.144-1.329, R² = 0.005) and NO₂ (p = 0.007; 95% CI: 0.214-1.361, R² = 0.007). However, the single and multi-polluted adjusted models revealed that only NO₂ was associated with the CVD (p = 0.016, relative risk (RR) = 1.049, 95% CI: 1.009-1.091 and p = 0.022, RR = 1.047, 95% CI: 1.007-1.089, respectively). Conclusions: This study shows a significant positive association between hospital admissions due to CVD and outdoor NO₂ concentrations in the area of Novi Sad, Serbia.

Objectives: Environmental exposure of the general population to asbestos in Poland is mainly due to degradation of very popular asbestos-cement products and the resultant release of the elementary asbestos fibres into the ambient air. Assessments of environmental pollution by asbestos were based on the volume of the raw material used, amount of manufactured asbestos products, and measuring the concentration of fibres in the air. Material and Methods: Under the governmental program intended to remove asbestos, measurements of the concentration of asbestos fibres were performed in 2004–2010 in all provinces of Poland. Considering that potential sources of asbestos dust emissions were present in residential areas, 1634 sampling sites were designated. From 2 to 4 air samples were collected at each sampling site. A total of 5962 samples were collected during seven years. A single dose of air collected by 25 mm 0.8 μm pore Sartorius filter was 1,300 litres. The fibres were counted using optical microscopy with phase contrast (PCM) on a polarizing microscope (PLM) at a total magnification of 600×.; method was adapted to determine the concentration of asbestos fibres in non-occupational environment. Results: Mean concentration of asbestos fibres was 492 f/m³ (95% CI: 467–518). In 82% of the sampling sites, the mean concentrations did not exceed 800 f/ m³. As much as 25.8% of the samples were found to be below the detection limit of the method. Estimated mean concentrations of fibres in different provinces ranged from 146 (95% CI: 106–203) to 709 f/m³ (95% CI: 591–851). In the areas affected by former asbestos-processing plants, mean concentration was 732 f/m³ (95% CI: 527–1016) and was significantly higher than levels recorded in other areas of Poland. Conclusion: Asbestos consumption per capita and the recorded moderate levels of asbestos fibres concentration in atmospheric air point to a relatively low level of environmental asbestos pollution in Poland.

Starting from Euro 6 not only for diesel but also for gasoline vehicles, with direct injection technology (GDI) a solid particle number emissions limit of 6 × 1011#/km becomes effective. The limit was temporary extended for GDI to 6 x 1012#/km. Nuclei of metals as well as organics are suspected to significantly contribute especially to the ultrafine particle size fractions, and thus to the particle number concentration. In the project GasOMeP (Gasoline Organic & Metal Particulates) metal-nanoparticles (including sub 20 nm) from gasoline cars are investigated for different engine technologies. In the present paper some results of basic investigations of nanoparticles from two gasoline cars – an older one with MPI and a never one with DI – are represented. The measurements were performed at vehicle tailpipe, with varying sampling conditions and with different SMPS-systems, which enabled the mobility scanning in different size ranges. The results show that the older vehicle with MPI emits high particle count concentrations. The size distributions are decisively bimodal with high numbers in nuclei mode. In this case, the particle counting below 10 nm yields important information. The emissions of the newer vehicle with DI show no typical uniform shape of particle size distributions and are at lower level, than for the older vehicle. There is no visible nuclei mode and the ultrafine particle concentrations below 10 nm are insignificant. A sampling with a strongly increased primary dilution has a clear influence on the indicated (higher) particle concentrations.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań emisji nanocząstek z dwóch samochodów wyposażonych w silniki benzynowe – starszy z wtryskiem MPI i nowszy z wtryskiem DI. Spaliny pobierano z układu wylotowego pojazdu przy różnych warunkach pomiarowych i z wykorzystaniem urządzeń do pomiaru emisji cząstek stałych o różnych zakresach pomiarowych.

Due to their mutagenic and carcinogenic properties, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most widely researched persistent organic compounds linked with the particulate matter (PM). The following paper presents the analysis of the historical data embracing the period since 1970s. It concerns the information on the PAH concentrations in the total PM in the Upper Silesia urban area. As the air pollution was largely reduced at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, the concentrations of PM and the related PAHs also considerably decreased. In the late-1990s, the mean yearly concentration of the PAHs sum ranged between 260 and 590 ng/m3. The winter and summer values obtained after the year 2000 have not exceeded 160 ng/m3 and 10 ng/m3, respectively. When compared to other regions, the PAH concentrations in the air in Upper Silesia are still affected by industrial and, particularly, municipal emissions.

Objectives Health Impact Assessments (HIA) approach can be executed by calculating the attributable burden of disease. The most common indicators used in the HIA methodology are: premature mortality, morbidity, life-expectancy, and Disability Adjusted Life-Year (DALY). The term Disability Adjusted Life-Years (DALYs) indicates months/years lost due to a premature death or disability. The aim of the study was to present health benefits, expressed in terms of lower total mortality and cardio-respiratory hospitalization rates, due to a decreased particulate matter (PM) concentration in ambient air, in Silesian voivodeship. Material and Methods In this paper, results obtained from the APHEKOM (Improving Knowledge and Communication for Decision Making on Air Pollution and Health in Europe) project, which provided specialized HIA tools, useful for assessing health benefits resulting from reducing air pollution, were used. Both short-term and long-term exposure HIA tools were applied with regard to the appropriate data for Silesian voivodeship. Exposure data were obtained from the Regional Environmental Inspectorate in Katowice, while population and health data were obtained from the Central Statistical Office of Poland or from the Silesian Voivodeship Office, respectively. Results Health benefits that are related to an improvement of ambient air quality in Silesia region are similar to previous estimates obtained for Kraków city. The reduction of short-term exposure to PM10 by 5 μg/m³ results in a lower number of yearly non-external deaths (2.6–2.75 per 100 000 inhabitants). This effect was also shown to be similar in the city of Zabrze, as well as in the whole Silesia region. Conclusions The Health Impact Assessments tools developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) can help public health experts make decisions in order to improve the health of populations living in particular regions of Europe.

Opis:
As a step towards remediation of sulphur contaminants, this study used a Crowcon Gasman (gas detection instrument) to collect and analyze Sulphuric gas samples from densely populated areas of urban Zaria. The results showed varying concentrations of Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) and Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S). The high concentrations of these pollutants detected can be attributed to increased population growth, increased production of gaseous wastes and increased number of vehicular movement. The results indicate also that the concentrations of pollutant sulphur component SO2 measured at all sampling points, with exception of the control site were hazardous while that of H2S were within safe limit set by FEPA and ACGIH respectively. Statistical tests were performed which established significant variation/relationship between detected pollutants and traffic volume. Findings from this study imply that vehicular emission within urban Zaria is not within the safe limit which further reveals that transport-related pollution in Zaria urban area can be potentially hazardous to health.

Opis:
The influence of the aerosols particles on the lung function was investigated by the measurements of lung function parameters in children at secondary school located in the centre of city Wroclaw (south – west of Poland). Simultaneous daily indoor and outdoor measurements of PM1, PM2,5, PM10 have been conducted with the use of Harvard cascade impactors (MS&T Area Samplers). In the study 186 children age 13–14 yrs underwent repeated spirometry (Blue Spiro) at the same time of day, 5 times during the winter/spring (heating season) and 5 times in summer/autumn. Exposure to indoor fine particulate matter PM2,5 significantly worseness FEV1 in the lung function of secondary school children (Pearson correlation: median versus indoor PM2,5, r = -0,95; p < 0.05). Correlation of the lung function parameters with other particles PM1, PM10 measured indoor and outdoor were not statistically significant. PM2.5 measured outdoor was also not significantly correlated with lung function parameters. Considerable effort should be made to improve ambient air quality. Especially there is a need to measure and control the fine particulate matter PM2,5 in winter as it has the highest impact on lung function in children.

Opis:
Oznaczono wysokie stężenia toluenu, m/p-ksylenów i benzenu. Wykorzystując otrzymane dane pomiarowe oraz dane o profilach i stężeniach LZO zaczerpnięte z literatury, przeanalizowano potencjalne źródła LZO oznaczonych w powietrzu wybranej JRG. Wykazano, że źródłami LZO w powietrzu były m.in. spaliny silników mechanicznych i pożary.
Concentrations of volatile organic compounds in ambient air of Firefighting and Rescue Unit were identified in this article. The sampling was done in the garage area and the cabin of the first response fire engine. Air sampling was performed with the diffusion tubes containing the Tenax-TA® sorbent. Analysis was done using gas the chromatography-mass spectrometry method. In result, there were found the significant concentrations of toluene, m/p-xylenes and benzene. The potential VOCs emission sources were identified due to comparison with literature. The comparison proved that the main sources of the VOCs emission were engine exhausts and fires. The potential negative health effects of the VOCs exposure for firefighters were also described. The concentrations of the VOCs found in ambient air were recognized as harmful to firefighters’ health.
