Opis:
The aim of the study is to calculate the alpha emitters in bone samples of some animals by counting the tracks of alpha particles emitted from radioactive nuclei (Pb-210, Po-210, Ra-226) using the CN-85 detector. The detectors were kept with the samples in closed clear plastic cups at a 2 cm distance for 60 days. The track density in the detector, and, hence, the alpha emitters from the bones were counted with an optical microscope after etching the detectors with an etchant solution (NaOH). The results showed that the optimum etching time of CN-85 when using to detect alpha emitted from natural radionuclides were 40 mins and the highest track density were found in chicken, beef, and sheep respectively.

Opis:
During the past 50 years, scintillators have been among the most important nuclear radiation detectors. Inorganic scintillators are widely used in experimental nuclear physics, high energy physics, nuclear medicine, nuclear tomography, environmental studies and many other fields of use. Scintillation crystals based on cesium iodide (CsI) are matters of relatively low hygroscopy, high atomic number, easy handling and low cost, characteristics that favor their use as radiation detectors. In this work, the growth of pure CsI crystals, CsI:Br and CsI:Pb, using the Bridgman technique, is described. Ions of divalent lead (Pb2+) doped in the crystal structures are efficient emission centers and their application as scintillators is still the reason for intensive studies. Recently, promising results have been found for crystals of CsI doped by bromine (Br) for their use as radiation detectors. The concentration of the bromine doping element (Br) was studied in the range from 1.5 × 10–1 M to 10–2 M and the lead (Pb) in the range from 10–2 M to 5 × 10–4 M. To evaluate the scintillators developed, systematic measurements were carried out for luminescence emission and luminescence decay time for gamma radiation, Vickers microhardness assays, and analysis of crystals response to the gamma radiation, in the energy range from 350 keV to 1330 keV, and alpha particles from a 241Am source, with energy of 5.54 MeV. The obtained values for luminescence decay time for CsI:Br and CsI:Pb crystals, were from 13 to 19 ns.

Opis:
Track-etched membranes were prepared in the Dosimetry Laboratory of Agricultural, Medical and Industrial Research School by exposing polycarbonate (PC) films with a thickness of about 20 μm to alpha particles emitted from 241Am followed by chemical etching in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at different temperatures and solution concentrations. The PC films were prepared using the method of chemical solving, forming and drying in a vacuum oven. The etching rate of PC was related to the concentration of etching solution, etching temperature and time. Therefore, a series of track-etched membranes were produced using different etching parameters. The relation between the etching rate and the etching parameters were established from experimental data and can be used to control the average pore sizes of the PC track-etched membrane. The pore sizes and their structures were studied by an optical microscope (OM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the obtained results indicated that the pores across the PC films are cylindrically shaped.

CVD diamond detector
lost alpha particles
high temperature plasma diagnostics
Opis:
Measurements of the so-called lost alpha particles escaping from thermonuclear plasma in future tokamaks (such as ITER) for energy production would be essential for monitoring the energy balance in these devices. The detection would have to be carried out in a harsh environment (with high nuclear radiation fluxes, high temperature, etc.), which limits the use of common semiconductors for charged particle detection. Diamond seems to be an attractive material for alpha particle detectors in these conditions. In this paper an analysis of properties of a diamond detector for spectrometric alpha measurements is reported. A high purity CVD (chemical vapour deposition) single crystal diamond detector was used, fabricated for this dedicated application by the Diamond Detector Ltd. The energy calibration was carried out using a triple alpha particle isotope source, AMR33 (239Pu, 241Am, 244Cm). A very good energy resolution, ca. 20 keV at ca. 5.5 MeV had been obtained, which is comparable to that of the silicon detector. The linearity of the diamond detector amplitude response to the alpha particle energy was analyzed with the use of mono-energetic (0.4–2 MeV) ion beam from a Van de Graaff accelerator. Results of the measurements using the AMR33 source deviate at most 30 keV from the calibration line obtained in this way.

Opis:
The presented work describes the autoxidation of alpha-pinene for the first time using a catalyst based on activated carbon from biomass with introduced Fe. The raw material for the preparation of the carbon material was waste orange peel, which was activated with a KOH solution. The following instrumental methods characterized the obtained catalyst (Fe/O_AC):N2 adsorption at 77 K, XRD, UV, SEM, TEM, X-ray microanalysis, and catalytic studies. It was shown that the Fe/O_AC catalyst was very active in the autoxidation of alpha-pinene. The main reaction products were: alpha-pinene oxide, verbenone, verbenol, and campholenic aldehyde.

Opis:
The carbonaceous precursor was obtained via pyrolysis of commercial aramid polymer (Kevlar). Additionally the precursor was activated at 1000°C in CO2 atmosphere for different times. Obtained materials were characterised by BET; XPS; SEM and optical microscopy. The sorption capacities were determined by temperature swing adsorption performed in TGA apparatus for CO2 and C2H4 gases. The obtained materials exhibit high difference in sorption of these gases i.e. 1.5 and 2.8 mmol/g @30°C respectively and high SSA ~1600 m2/g what can be applied in separation applications. The highest uptakes were 1.8 and 3.1 mmol/g @30°C respectively. It was found that the presence of oxygen and nitrogen functional groups enhances C2H4/CO2 uptake ratio.
