Opis:
The paper presents the comparison of the influence of the season (winter and summer) on the level of damage to trees remaining after the timber harvest during early thinning in young alder stands. The study was carried out in black alder stands aged 38 and 40 years located in north−eastern Poland (Płaska Forest District). Chainsaw logging was performed in the cut−to−length harvest system, while timber was extracted using an agricultural tractor with a trailer with manual timber loading and unloading. The number and share of damaged trees and stand damage rates were estimated in a particular season of the year. Logging resulted in the damage of 8.3% to residual trees. Almost twice as many trees were damaged in summer as in winter (p=0.001). Significantly higher share of trees in 3rd, 4th, and 5th damage classes was found. Only the damage of timber fibers (6th class) did not differ significantly between analyzed seasons. The stand weighted damage rate (W) ranged in winter from 0.12 to 0.38, and in summer between 0.12 and 0.80. In turn, the value of weighted coefficient of damaged trees in the remaining stand amounted to 10.24−60.15 in winter, and 19.07−119.64 in summer. Both W (p<0.01) and WDI (p<0.05) indices were twice higher in the summer than in the winter period.

A comparative analysis was made for different measures of location and variation in height increment of the main stem of the mature black alder from the north−eastern region (N) and two southern regions (S1 and S2) of Poland. Correlation was found between annual height increment and tree age and height, as well as the number of the nodes along the shoot and the length of the internode. It was demonstrated that the trees producing long shoots in a given year would produce long shoots also in the successive years.

Opis:
The delimbing and bucking of timber using a harvester head is very productive in comparison with a chainsaw operations, however it can cause damage to the outer layer of round wood. This damage can originate from the delimbing knives or from the feed roller spikes. As a consequence, grey fungi can develop on coniferous species, and faster wood drying is also observed (with no regard to the species). Feed roller spikes create cuts and dents on the outer layers of the wood. When plywood is processed, the cuts and dents are recognised as damage as a consequence, they lower the wood quality and value. The objective of the presented research was to find out: 1) the depth of cuts, 2) the potential loss of volume, and 3) product value loss due to damage to plywood caused by feed roller spikes. The research was carried out on alder (Alnus glutinosa Geartn.) plywood logs harvested by a Valmet 911.4 with a 360.2 head. Measurements were taken using an electronic calliper with an accuracy of 0.01 mm. 16 plywood logs were considered, on which 384 measurement points (depth of spike cuts) were selected on different areas along the length of the log: 1, 2, 3 and 4 m from the butt end. The maximum depth of the spike cut was observed on the bottom part of the logs (1 m from the butt end) and amounted to 3.9 mm. This damage depth was statistically different to those at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th metre points, amounting to 1.9, 1.9 and 2.1 mm, respectively. The biggest volume losses were on the 1st metre of the plywood assortments: 0.004 m³ (4% of the volume), while on the further parts (2nd, 3rd and 4th metres) only 0.002 m³ of the plywood had damage (2% of the volume). In addition, the highest product value loss was on the butt end logs and amounted to 302 PLN/€72 per 100 m³. The following plywood assortments (2 nd , 3th and 4 th metres) had a loss of 76 PLN/€18 per 100 m³. Therefore, when plywood assortments are processed using a Valmet 911.4 harvester with a 360.2 head, it is recommended that after cutting and felling a tree, the plywood section of the alder tree trunk is cut off without feeding it through the harvester head.

Opis:
European black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.) is a widespread tree species associated with wetlands and riparian ecosystems, thus it plays an important ecological role. Due to its fast growth and favorable wood properties it also has a potential to satisfy a growing demand for wood and fiber. However, its growth potential is not fully realized in Poland. In this study we investigated variation in growth traits, productivity, and stem straightness among 11 populations of European black alder originating from the lowland distribution of the species in Poland. The common−garden experiment located in 1968 in Kórnik (mid−western Poland) has been so far the only provenance experiment with this species in our country. We measured height and diameter of all trees at the site, assessed stem straightness in a 5−step scale (1−crooked; 5−straight), and calculated productivity at age of 50 years, which should be considered close to the rotation age. We found significant variation among populations in all investigated traits. The difference in productivity between the best and the worst provenance reached 75%. Using published and unpublished data from previous measurements at this site we also analyzed a trend in provenance ranking through time. The best and worst provenance could be identified at age 16 years, but many ranking shifts took place afterwards at the intermediate rank positions. We conclude that growth, productivity and stem quality of black alder could be improved through selection of favorable provenances within the species. Selection decisions can be made at the age below the half the rotation age, although decisions at 3/4 of rotation age would be more precise.

The paper presents a stochastic growth model for black alder stands. The model was built on the rich empirical material collected in Poland, and some equations also considered data obtained from black alder stands in Germany. The model describes the concept of a model alder stand. The main characteristic of the model is stand density. This characteristic was used to draw up a thinning programme based on the principles of selective thinning.

The paper presents a comparative analysis of the degree of damage to common ash and black alder trees growing in mixture or a close neighbourhood. Three variants of the damage assessment method were applied in the analysis: defoliation−based variant I, vitality variant II and synthetic damage indicator−based variant III. It was demonstrated that on average ash stands were more damaged than alder stands. This allowed to put forward a hypothesis that there is an alternative to replace ash with black alder on some, especially wet habitats where the dieback process is largely advanced.

Opis:
The paper deals with the structural diversity and production of a less frequently studied type of alder stands originated on former agricultural lands in the 1950s, established partly by plantation and partly by natural succession in the area of the Krkonoše Mts. and the Orlické hory Mts. (Czech Republic). Four permanent research plots (PRP) were established at sites where Black alder (Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn.) and Grey alder (Alnus incana L. Moench.) naturally occurs, each plot of 0.25 ha in size. The aim of the study was to evaluate the structure and development of the alder stands with respect to biodiversity, horizontal, vertical and species structure, diameter increment with emphasis on climate factors, and the quantity and quality of timber production. The results document low diversification of the studied stands in the PRPs. The horizontal structure is defined as random and clumped at sites at the highest altitude with high water table. The number of living trees with DBH ≥ 4 cm ranges between 556 to 828 trees ha-1 with the relative stand density index (SDI) 0.67–0.77. The stand volume ranges from 247 to 393 m3 ha–1, and decreases with higher altitudes. Low temperatures is limiting factor for radial growth in the high mountain areas, respectively low precipitation in the middle lands. Owing to a rather specific site character, as especially the spring area, the stands exhibit only average production, but the production quality is generally high. The quality timber is suitable for industrial use; the rot-affected trunk base parts usable for fuel represent only approximately 16%.

The study investigated the accuracy of thirty equations formulated in England, Sweden, Turkey, Lithuania and Spain and which aim to determine the aboveground biomass of black alder. The reference constituted of bark, timber, stem, branches and leaves dry biomass of 168 sample trees aged 6−96 from 56 alder stands located in the western part of Kotlina Sandomierska (south−eastern Poland). The analysed formulas, considering local conditions, resulted in biased biomass calculations. The evaluation of such components as leaves, branches, trunk timber or trunk bark is subject to systematic errors larger than a dozen or so per cent, and in certain ranges of breast height diameters − up to even a couple of dozens or a few hundred per cent. Only three out of 30 formulas may be considered useful for estimating aboveground biomass of black alder in Poland.

In the present study, detailed observations were made of the structure of fl owers of Corylus avellana L. and Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. Pollen yield of the abovementioned species was determined. The number of pollen grains in the theca, anther, fl ower and infl orescence was calculated. A comparison was made of the number of pollen grains of these taxa recorded during the atmospheric pollen seasons analysed over a period of 8 years in the conditions of Lublin. The study demonstrates that pollen yield of the common hazel infl orescence was 66 mg, whereas for black alder it was 120 mg. It was found that the number of pollen grains produced by the alder infl orescence was 2.2 times higher than by the hazel infl orescence. The atmospheric pollen season of the studied plant taxa was recorded at similar dates, but alder pollen was in much larger concentrations.

Opis:
To assess the inter- and intrapopulation genetic variation in the filial generation (F1) of alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.), 11 naturally regenerated populations were analysed. Their parental populations (P), represent the whole Polish territory and belong to three phytosociological associations with alder: typical alder swamp forest Carici elongatae-Alnetum (Ce-A); alder riparian forest Circaeo-Alnetum (C-A); and ash-elm riparian forest Fraxino-Ulmetum (F-U). F1 populations are grown in a common-garden experiment (provenance trial). Genotyping of individual trees has been carried out by analysis in a bud tissue allele frequency in the 21 isozyme putative loci of 10 enzymes. Differences between populations in respect to the level of genetic diversity were not high. Genetic diversity measured as the number of effective alleles per locus was the highest (Ne = 1.65) in population Wińsko originating from F-U (where also the inbreeding coefficient was the highest, F = 0.429), and the lowest (Ne = 1.48) in population Sławki from Ce-A. In all investigated populations, observed heterozygosity (Ho = 20%) was lower than expected from H-W equilibrium (He = 29%). The highest genetic variation expressed as percentage of polymorphic loci (77.3%) was observed in the offspring populations from Ce-A, and the smallest (69.9%) in the populations originating from F-U. It seems that the low genetic differentiation between populations is probably connected with long-distance seed dispersal via river systems. Alder seed can be transported over long distances thanks to periodical flooding. There is some gene flow between alder populations, with about 2.5 immigrants successfully entering a population per generation (Nm = 2.55). The level of population subdivision within A. glutinosa was low (Fst = 0.089). There was no significant genetic differentiation between populations from different phytosociological associations. Mantel test exhibited no significant correlation (r = 0.077) between genetic and geographic distance. In the dendrogram constructed according to Nei (1972) on the basis of interpopulation genetic distances, many small groups can be observed.

Opis:
To test the influence of selected fertilisers and fungicides on the germination of black alder seeds and the initial phase of seedling growth, we conducted a laboratory experiment outlined in this paper. Six treatments were applied on petri dishes each containing 30 seeds. The substrate for germination was sterile filter paper wetted with an aqueous solution of either one of two fungicides, two organic fertilisers, a mineral fertiliser or distilled water (control). Fungicides and fertilisers were applied according to the manufacturers’ recommendations. In order to keep genetic variability to a minimum, seeds originated from a single tree in a seed stand located in the Chotyłów Forest District, eastern Poland. Germination and growth took place at a temperature of 23oc ± 2oC with a 14 h/10 h day/night cycle. Seeds began to germinate as early as the second day after sowing, except for the mineral fertiliser treatment, in which the first sprouting was observed on day 3. Seedling length was measured daily from the day of germination of a given seed through to day 15. Germination was found to proceed most rapidly in the control, while the largest increments in length and dry mass occurred in the control and fertiliser treatment with the so-called N1 fertiliser (solely comprising growth stimulators in the form of humic acids, chitosan and silicon). The most limited growth was observed under the influence of the F1 fungicide (active compound Thiram) as well as the organic fertiliser N2 (a mixture of mineral components and organic growth stimulators). Roots were found to develop most rapidly in the control and in the treatment with N1 (no mineral components). These are also the only two treatments in which the roots were longer than the stems after 15 days. Fertiliser N2 was found to have the most unfavourable influence on both, germination and the first phase of seedling deve- lopment. The fact that selected fertilizers and fungicides affected black alder seeds and seedlings under laboratory conditions does not mean that they will have an impact under field conditions or on other forest tree species. Therefore, this type of research will need to be conducted individually for each forest tree species.

Opis:
Set of ‘nonparametric’ methods, that don’t make a priori assumption about functional form of empirical distribution was developed as an alternative to the parametric distribution modeling. The kernel estimators are one of such methods, that can be used to describe the frequency of data representing for example DBH records. Kernel smoothing requires the choice of weighting function and bandwidth also called as smoothing parameter or window. The lack of comprehensive analysis on the applicability of particular bandwidth selection methods to model DBH structure gave an impulse to present investigation aimed at determining value and variability of smoothing parameter in black alder stands. The optimal bandwidth was obtained according to six different variants of plug−in method proposed by Altman and Léger. Presented investigations were based on DBH measurements collected in 163 managed black alder stands aged from 6 to 89 years, growing in the west part of the Sandomierz Basin (S Poland). We measured in total 22,530 black alders, from 48 to 359 in individual stand. Stands were characterized by: age, quadratic mean diameter, basal area, mean height, Reineke’s stand density index and standard deviation of DBH. Smoothing parameter was obtained by means of plug−in method with the pilot bandwidth selected by: Silverman’s rule of thumb (nrd0), Scott’s method (nrd), unbiased cross−validation (ucv), biased cross−validation (bcv), method of Sheather and Jones (sj) and one−stage method of Wand and Jones (onestage). The bandwidth was first obtained to real data, then to 100 bootstrap samples of 5, 10, 15 ... and 100 trees from each stand. Smoothing parameters were characterized by mean and variance. Relationship between values of smoothing parameter and stand characteristics was determined. Finally the influence of sample size on value and variability of bandwidth was assessed. Value and variability of smoothing parameter in black alder stands are determined by stand age, sample size and method of bandwidth choice. There is a close relationship between bandwidth and the mean height (r from 0.75 to 0.83), quadratic mean diameter (r from 0.79 to 0.88) and standard deviation of DBH (r from 0.84 to 0.93). Potentially these stand features can be used to predict smoothing parameter values. Minor changes of bandwidth for samples containing above 50 trees together with persistence of standard error give an objective grounds for defining optimal number of diameters, that are necessary to kernel estimation of DBH distribution.

Many pathogenes of Phytophthora genera (P. cactorum, P. citricola, P. cinnamomi and P. citrophthora) are present in the forest and ornamental nurseries all over the Europe. They cause serious disease of many of forest tree species (f.ex. alder, oak and beech). Infected seedlings in nurseries when planted along river plantations are the main source of infection which spread further down of the stream. More research about this phenomen is needed in Poland.

Opis:
Black alder is an important forest−forming species in Poland. Its wood is decomposed by many species of fungi. Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst. is a species of Basidiomycetes which belongs to family Ganodermataceae, order Polyporales. This fungus causes white rot decay of wood in dead and sometimes living alder trees. G. lucidum has been under partial protection in Poland since 2014. It is also red−listed as a rare species (category R – taxa with small populations) on the ‘Red list of the macrofungi in Poland’. The fungus was cut out with a sizeable fragment of wood from the alder stump in Łuków Forest District (eastern Poland) and transported to the laboratory of the Department of Mycology and Forest Phytopathology, Warsaw University of Life Sciences−SGGW. Pure culture of G. lucidum mycelium was obtained from a fragment of fruitbody. The aim of this study was to investigate, through laboratory decay tests, the ability of G. lucidum to degrade alder wood. Sterilization of wood samples (30×20×20 mm) consisted of placing the material in an accelerator and irradiating it with high−energy electrons at a dose of 30 kGy at the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology in Warsaw. On the next day, wood samples were put into 200 ml flasks with mycelium of G. lucidum on agar−wort medium (2 samples per flask). The flasks were placed in a Heraeus BK 600 incubator for 180 days, with a constant temperature of 22°C and humidity of 80 ±5%. Every 30 days 10 flasks were randomly selected, i.e. 20 samples of alder wood from this experiment. After each incubation period the samples were removed from the flasks, cleaned to remove mycelia and dried at a temperature of 105°C until they reached constant weight. By comparing mass of the samples at the start and the end of experiment in an absolutely dry state, the relative wood mass loss was calculated. After exposure times 180 days, the relative weight loss of alder wood as a result of decay by G. lucidum mycelium was on average 10.88%. The rate of the decay was almost constant during the study period. On some alder wood samples structures resembling fruitbodies of G. lucidum were noticed.

The paper provides research results concerning the relationship between age, absolute height and relative crown length of black alder. Analysis of the ratio of relative crown length to tree height of black alder trees allowed to develop a crown length model. Alder is capable of producing a secondary crown, which entails the shortening of the non−branched section of the trunk. A relationship has been found between the length of the primary crown and the length of the secondary crown depending on elongation of the secondary crown at the cost of shortening of the primary crown.

Opis:
Black alder, a major forest tree species in Europe, thrives in moist soils. During the seeds extraction (nutlets) from the cones, the heaviest seeds were observed to fall out first. Seed weight was not correlated to the ability of germination; no significant differences were observed between the heaviest and the lightest seeds. Seeds with a fresh mass moisture content of 8−9% after storage in –3°C retained their high germinability for six winters. However, seedling emergence decreased gradually when tested in cell trays in an unheated greenhouse. Along with the decline of seedling emergence, the participation of high seedlings (≥25 cm) decreased and participation of small seedlings increased simultaneously. These results question whether the practice of storing seeds in –3°C for long time is the best method of germplasm preservation.

The aim of the study was to develop empirical equations for predicting breast height form factors for black alder (Alnus glutinosa). Data used to develop these equations were collected from 1496 felled trees from 136 stands. One hundred and 36 stands were located in northern and southern Poland, respectively. Separate equations to predict stand form factors (F5, F18) and tree form factors (f 5, f 18) were developed. These functions estimate form factor according to tree diameter and the average stand diameter or mean height. Equations can be used to estimate stem volume u.b. to top diameter u.b. of 5 cm or 18 cm (merchantable vol.).

Opis:
Black alder, an N-fixing tree is considered to accelerate the availability of phosphorus in soils due to the increased production of phosphatase enzymes, which are responsible for the P release from the litter. Acid phosphatase activity plays a pivotal role in organic P mineralization in forest soils and in making P available to plants. In order to check whether Alnus glutinosa stimulates acid phosphomonoesterase (PHACID) activity, we compared enzyme activities, total P concentration (PTOT), plant-available P (PAVAIL), organic P (PORG) and inorganic P (PINORG), and organic matter content in 27 ancient and 27 post-agricultural alder woods (the latter ones representing different age classes: 11-20, 21-40 and 41-60 years) of soil samples taken from the litter and the mineral layers. Phosphomonoesterase activity, organic matter, PTOT, PINORG and PORG concentrations were significantly higher in ancient alder woods than in the soils of post-agricultural forests. Significant differences in the acid phosphatase activity, organic matter and PAVAIL concentration were noted between the litter and mineral layers within the same forest type. In recent stands the amount of organic matter and phosphatase activity increased significantly with the age of alder stands, although only in the mineral layer of their soils. Phosphomonoesterase activity, organic matter and PAVAIL content were higher in a litter layer and decreased significantly at a mineral depth of the soil. The acid phosphatase activity was significantly correlated with organic matter content in both ancient and recent stands. There was no significant relationship between PHACID activity and any P forms.

Opis:
The study presents the assessment of the accuracy of two generalized height−diameter models, such as skwB [Bruchwald et al. 2001] and skwO [Orzeł et al. 2014], developed in Poland for black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.) stands. Verification of these models was conducted on empirical material that was collected in 127 alder stands located in the western part of Sandomierz Basin (southern Poland). Selected alder stands aged 6−89 years, while average breast height diameter ranged from 4.5 to 43.0 cm and average height from 6.3 to 32.7 m. The stand density varied from 222 to 4360 trees/ha. The accuracy assessment for uniform height−diameter curves was based on the analysis of single tree absolute error distributions. Synthetic indicators of goodness−of−fit, such as: average and standard errors, coefficients of variation and determination were calculated based on absolute errors. The final evaluation of the compared uniform height−diameter models results from the structure of the goodness−of−fit measures that was observed within all analyzed stands and within age classes of 20 years. The efficiency of uniform height−diameter models was also compared with stand height−diameter curve, which was developed based on the Näslund function. General height−diameter models overestimated height in alder stands on average from 0.26 (1.67) to 0.19 m (1.39%), based on skwB and skwO models, respectively. Bias depended on the age of stand and decreases from almost 3% in I age class to nearly 0.5% in IV and V age class. For both analyzed models, a positive systematic error was observed for the standardized breast height diameter. Bias in estimating the height of single stand depended on the accuracy of stand height estimations. In case of estimation based on the measurements of three trees height, bias in single stand can range from –13% to +14%. Due to the range and nature of observed systematic errors, uniform height curves should be applied to groups of stands that have different age and breast height diameter structure, as it allows for partial reduction of the error.

The aim of this study was to determine how thermal conditions affect the speed of sound wave propagation, in trunks of living alder Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. trees. This method in practiced when diagnosing the presence of internal decay in standing trees. Field work was carried out four times at different temperatures (+13°C, +3°C, -7°C and -16°C) using an Impulse Hammer. There was a significant correlation between the thermal conditions and the speed of sound wave propagation. Therefore, temperature must be taken into account to correctly diagnose tree health and timber quality.

Opis:
Black alder Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. is an important forest−forming species in Poland, with more than 5% participation in the species structure. It is a typical lowland species, especially in the river valleys, on the banks of the lakes and in the land depressions. It is one of the main species in the following habitats: boggy mixed broadleaved forest, alder and alder−ash forest, riparian forest and moist broadleaved forest. As a valuable admixture alder is introduced in the habitat of boggy coniferous forest and boggy broadleaved forest. Until recently black alder was considered in Poland as a species with a very low level of danger from the pests and diseases. The situation changed at the turn of the centuries, when the deterioration of the health status of the alder stands began, which led locally to the mass dieback of the trees, mainly in the stands which are over 20 years old. In the following years, the phenomenon was intensified. The largest number of such stands was recorded in 2006. The strongest deterioration of health condition of the trees was observed in five regional directorates of the State Forests: Białystok, Lublin, Torun, Wrocław and Olsztyn. The study gives information on lignicolous fungi found on black alder in 62 alder stands, which exhibited the most severe signs of the dieback. The research was conducted in 14 forest districts and in Poleski National Park (fig.). The surveys revealed the presence of 49 taxa of the lignicolous fungi (44 Basidiomycota and 5 Ascomycota). The most common species were Xanthoporia radiata, Stereum hirsutum, Daedaleopsis confragosa, Armillaria spp. as well as S. subtomentosum (tab. 2). The disease contributing to the local dieback of black alder in the stands (mainly in the Lublin Regional Directorate of the State Forests) is the root rot caused by Armillaria species. Many species of lignicolous fungi (e.g. Fomes fomentarius, Fomitopsis pinicola, Ganoderma applanatum) penetrate into previously weakened trees, causing decay of wood, which can accelerate the dying of single trees.

The survival, weight and relative growth rate (RGR) of the Melolontha spp. grubs feeding on roots of Quercus petraea, Q. robur, Fagus sylvatica, Betula pendula, Larix decidua, Alnus glutinosa and Pinus sylvestris were examined. Overall, the youngest grubs, L1, were the most affected by food quality. The mortality of the grubs feeding on the roots of A. glutinosa changed most rapidly and, consequently, LT50 was the shortest (25.9 days), whereas the slowest changes in mortality with the highest LT50 values were observed on the two oak species (54.9 and 44.9 days on Q. robur and Q. petraea, respectively). The RGRs of the L1 grubs were the highest on oaks, F. sylvatica and B. pendula. The overall rate of survival of the older grubs was high (66.7-100%). It was the lowest on the roots of B. pendula (L2 grubs) and L. decidua (L3 grubs), which at the same time displayed the highest RGRs. The interpretation of the results is difficult due to the lack of basic knowledge on the potential effects of food quality and other factors on grub metamorphosis. There is no doubt, however, that among the seven tested tree species the roots of A. glutinosa are the least favorable for the Melolontha grubs' performance.

Opis:
We evaluated the usefulness of ten theoretical probability density functions for the approximation of the breast height diameter distributions in managed alder stands growing in the western part of the Sandomierz Basin (southern Poland). The study material consisted of measurement results for 22,530 alders obtained for 844 circular sample plots, established in 163 stands aged 6−89. In the area of particular stands, from 2 to 10 age−dependent circular sample plots sized 0.01−0.10 ha were systematically arranged. We evaluated the following theoretical probability distributions: normal (N), double normal (P−N), Johnson SB (J), Weibull (W), beta (B), Burr (Bu), gamma (G), log−normal (L−N), log−logistic (L−L) and Birnbaum−Saunders (B−S). Additionally the usefulness of the W, B, Bu, G, L−N, L−L and B−S distributions with omitted location parameter was tested. The goodness−of−fit of each probability density function was assessed based on the Kolmogorov−Smirnov statistic, the root mean square error and ranks established on their basis. It was found that DBH distribution of majority stands is characterized by right−sided asymmetry and negative kurtosis. It was showed that the best distribution for the breast height diameter structure approximation of alder stands is the Johnson SB (J) distribution. To describe the frequency of thickness, normal (N) and log−logistic (L−L) distribution should not be used. Elimination of location parameter significantly affects usefulness of probability density functions to modeling empirical distributions of breast height diameter. Gamma and Burr distributions with omitted location parameter gave the best results in description the frequency of breast height diameter. In certain situations, these distributions can also be used to describe the structure of breast height diameter of alder stands.

Opis:
The paper presents the assessment of growth parameters and the impact of pure stands of Scots pine, European larch, common birch and black alder on the reaction and chemical properties of the initial soils developed on the reclaimed sand pit ‘Szczakowa’ (southern Poland). Pine, larch and birch stands were characterized by good growth parameters, which confirms high adaptability of these species to post−mining sites. The black alder was characterized by worse growth parameters. The organic horizon (Olf) under conifers (pine and larch) were characterized by higher mass and lower pH than under deciduous species (birch and larch). The alder litter contained more N, K and Mg compared to other tree species. In the Ain initial horizon, the modifying effect of tree species was only detected in the case of black alder by higher exchange acidity and cation exchange capacity (CEC), higher content of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total N, and a lower C:N ratio, compared to soils under influence of other species. The research confirms that the selection of species composition for afforestation is an important factor affecting the soil−forming processes on reclaimed sand pit. In particular, the alder was characterized by beneficial effects on soil properties, which confirms its usefulness as a phytomeliorative species.

Dead wood in the city parks is removed for safety and aesthetic reasons. ‘Polesie Konstantynowskie’ nature reserve (9.8 ha) located in the western part of Łódź is an exception. In this reserve dead wood is left for natural decomposition. So far in this reserve research was conducted on the vascular flora and stand structure only, but the amount of wood was not measured. The aim of this study was to assess the volume of coarse woody material of various types (coarse woody debris, snags), species, size, (dbh and height) and decay classes. The study was carried out in 2010. The volume of coarse woody debris was estimated with a method proposed by Van Wagner [1968]. The criterion of division into five decomposition classes follows Maser et al. [1979].

Opis:
Traditional firewood is still the most popular type of solid fuel. This is mainly because of the availability of raw materials and simple production process, which involves mostly just sawing and cleaving. Cleaving increases the surface of the wood through which water evaporates, which in turn speeds up the drying. Dry wood has a higher calorific value and its combustion releases less harmful carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Wood cleaving process can be divided into three phases that lasts from the introduction of the wedge till the appearance of a crack (phase I), from the appearance of the crack till the stop of the slots (phase II) and then until the piece of the wood is completely cleaved (phase III). Although it is a conditional phase and it does not always occur in the case of the firewood species popular in Poland, the last phase takes the longest and has the greatest impact on the cleaving performance. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of wood and its moisture content on the duration of the phase III during the trial cleaving. The tested samples comprised of five popular in Poland species: hornbeam, beech, birch, alder and ash. The cleaving were carried out immediately after cutting and sawing the timber and after 3−month−long period of natural drying. For hornbeam, beech and alder humidity does not affect the hollow wedge in wood at the time of rupture. The duration of phase III was significantly longer than duration of phases I and II for each species independently of humidity. Significant dependence was observed for depression wedge as a function of humidity obtained in phase I and II for silver birch, and in phase III for ash.

Opis:
An influence of environmental changes upon forest tree species competition was studied for suggested scenario of environmental changes (3−4°C increase of monthly temperatures), 8 main tree species and 6 natural regions. For a synthetic assessment of the reaction of various species for thermal and higric parameters of the climate, the growth multipliers DDGF and SMGF were used. The main environmental factor influencing future growth of tree species in Poland will be water shortage due to increased evapotranspiration. Regional decrease of water sensitive species importance, eg. alder, spruce and birch, accompanied by country−scale expansion of highly competitive, late−successional species, eg. beech and hornbeam is expected.

Opis:
The seeds of forest trees usually transfer numerous fungi species, including pathogens, facultative parasites and saprotrophs. The aim of the present work was to determine qualitative and quantitative composition of fungi inhabiting the seeds of 10 trees species i.e.: birch (Betula pendula Roth.), beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), red oak (Quercus rubra L.), common oak (Quercus robur L.), sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.), black alder (Alnus glutinosa Gaerth.), fir (Abies alba Mill.), European larch (Larix decidua Mill.), pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst). The seed samples were obtained courtesy of 5 forest districts located in the south−eastern Poland. Mycological analysis was performed in the years 2012−2013. Each time, the study included 100 surface−disinfected seeds of particular plant species. As a result of the study about 2000 colonies of fungi representing 26 genera and above 39 species were isolated. The most frequently occurring species were: Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Trichoderma koningii, Epicoccum nigrum, Phoma spp. and Cylindrocarpon destructans. Moreover Discula spp., Phyllosticta spp., Pyrenochaeta spp., Rhizoctonia solani, Alternaria consortiale were obtained only from the seeds of deciduous trees while Truncatella angustata and Sphareopsis sapinea exclusively from the seeds of coniferous trees. The genus Fusarium was represented by 8 species and among them F. avenaceum, F. oxysporum and F. sporotrichioides dominated. Moreover Penicillium spp., Epicoccum nigrum, Trichoderma koningii, Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Chaetomium globosum and Trichothecium roseum were commonly isolated while the other species of fungi were present in smaller numbers. Isolation of numerous fungi species which may cause mold of sowing material, seedling blight as well as leaves and needles spot, indicates their big threat for seeds during storage and for plants in the initial period of growth in a nursery. The obtained results show that the seeds, besides the infected soil, are a very important source of infection for young plants.
