Opis:
The mangrove ecological services as carbon sinks and storage are very useful in the efforts to mitigate global warming and climate change. In this study, the above and below-ground biomass, carbon stock, as well as carbon sequestration by the mangroves in Demta Bay, Papua Province, Indonesia were estimated. Allometric equations were used to determine the mangrove biomass in 36 observation plots. The biomass value was used to determine carbon stock and estimate carbon sequestration. Nine mangrove species were found in Demta Bay, with the contribution of mangrove species to biomass (AGB and BGB) in the following order: Rhizophora apiculata > Rhizophora mucronata > Bruguiera gymnorhiza > Bruguiera cylindrica > Heritiera Littoralis > Xylocarpus molucensis > Rhizophora stylosa > Avicennia marina > Sonneratia caseolaris. The average mangrove biomass was estimated at 174.20 ± 68.14 t/ha (AGB = 117.62 ± 45.68 t/ha and BGB = 56.58 ± 22.49 t/ha). The carbon stocks in mangroves at the Ambora site were higher than the Tarfia and Yougapsa sites, averaging 123.57 ± 30.49 t C/ha, 81.64 ± 25.29 t C/ha, and 56.09 ± 39.03 t C/ha, respectively. The average carbon stock in the mangrove ecosystem of Demta Bay is estimated at 87.10 ± 34.07 t C/ha or equivalent to 319.37 ± 124.92 t CO2 e/ha. The results of this study indicate that the mangrove ecosystem in Demta Bay stores quite high carbon stocks, so it is necessary to maintain it with sustainable management. Therefore, climate change mitigation is not only done by reducing the carbon emission levels but also needs to be balanced by maintaining the mangrove ecosystem services as carbon sinks and sequestration.

Opis:
We studied the chronosequence of six Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) plantations (6-, 9-, 11-, 15-, 17-, and 20-years-old) to examine the changes in leaf area index (LAI) over stand age. The study site was located on a mine spoil heap (outer dumping ground) in the Belchatow lignite open-cast mining district (central Poland). The main goal of the study was to analyze LAI changes over stand age in a chronosequence of young Scots pine stands and to test the relationship between LAI estimates derived from a LAI-2000 Plant Canopy Analyzer and site-specific allometric equations. In addition, we tried to determine whether LAI estimated by a LAI-2000 PCA can be used to accurately estimate forest biomass. We hypothesized that LAI-2000 PCA underestimates LAI of the stands, and that stand age (and linked stand parameters) may influence the range of the hypothetical underestimation due to changes in biomass allocation. Our study revealed that LAI was highly dependent upon stand age and tree density (p<0.0001) regardless of the way how LAI was determined. Moreover, we found that LAI estimated by LAI-2000 PCA significantly correlates with stand biomass per area; the highest coefficients of determination were found for total aboveground biomass, aboveground woody biomass, and stem biomass. This means that data obtained by LAI-2000 PCA are good predictors of stand biomass in the young stages of stand development. In contrast to our prior assumption, the results showed that LAI-2000 PCA overestimates leaf area index. The relative differences between the values obtained with LAI-2000 and those calculated on the basis of the site-specific allometric equations increase with age. This may reflect changes in crown architecture over age caused by enlarging tree dimensions and over - crowding of trees leading to deterioration of light conditions inside the canopy.

Opis:
So−far developed and published Polish equations for determination of aboveground biomass of Scots pine are based on two predictors: diameter at the breast height (DBH) and tree height. The main goal of the presented study were i) to build the simplified empirical biomass equations that use exclusively DBH as the independent variable, and ii) to compare the obtained results with values from equations based on both predictors (optimal model). The empirical material consisted of biomass data for 90 Scots pines growing on typical habitats in Bory Lubuskie (western Poland). The elaborated equations have a lower accuracy than the optimal ones. The R² value for all biomass components is higher than 0.69, and reaches as much as 0.976 in the case of dry wood biomass. The root mean square error (RMSE) for such components as dry biomass of bark and alive or dead branches and branches with needles is lower for the simplified model. However, for the dry wood biomass the optimal model has lower RMSE value. Because this component has the largest share in the total aboveground tree biomass (AGB), the resulting RMSE for the AGB is lower than for the optimal model. Optimal model is also more accurate when the mean error is considered. The simplified model can be used when there are no height measurement available or there is an anxiety that the use of height−diameter models significantly increases the uncertainty of results.
