Passenger traffic at airports is characterised by fluctuations resulting from the influence of several factors. The influence of each factor is different, leading to unpredictable passenger traffic patterns that make planning difficult. Previous studies used geographic, demographic, and economic variables as exploratory factors to examine air travel demand. The study explores several variables to confirm airports and airlines’ characteristics as demand factors for domestic air travel in Nigeria. Data for the study were collected by administering a questionnaire to respondents at major domestic airports in Nigeria. The variables were presented in the 5-point Likert Scale for respondents to rank in order of significance. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA and CFA) were employed to identify the significant factors affecting passenger traffic at domestic airports in Nigeria. EFA reduced fifteen variables to four orthogonal factors influencing passenger traffic at domestic airports. CFA validates airport and airline services, demographics, economic factors, and airport size and facilities as significant factors affecting passenger traffic at domestic airports in Nigeria. The model fit test shows CMIN/DF = 2.263; CFI = 0.940; GFI = 0.929; NFI = 0.901; and RMSEA = 0.078. The result identifies airport and airline characteristics as factors influencing passenger traffic at the domestic airport in any country. It implies that airport and airline characteristics significantly influence domestic air traffic and needs to be included in modelling. Identifying airport and airline characteristics as air travel determinants make this study unique for policy decisions to forecast domestic passenger traffic in a country.

Problem of the research is lack of approach and practice of smart interactive terminals functional planning and organization, the previous researches about this type of buildings are dealing with the influence of technology on one functional zone inside the terminal, not taking all functional zones inside it. The aims of research are presenting the influence of technology on all functional zones inside the smart interactive terminal and understanding the connection between them, this study will look also at the transformation of airport terminal interior design in relation to technology and automatic passengers processing systems. additionally, introducing the functional planning of smart interactive terminals buildings and its architectural design features. The results of developing a smart integrated terminal are presented. A comparative functional analysis was done of the proposed terminals as well as its design and technology.

- Artykuł dotyczy jakości życia w regionach lotniskowych, która w krajach UE odgrywa coraz większą rolę w procesie regionalnego i lokalnego planowania przestrzennego i rozwoju lotnisk. Artykuł przybliża doświadczenia regionów i miast europejskich, zebrane w ramach realizacji projektu QLAIR – Quality of Life in Airport Regions. W artykule omówiono 4 polityki poprawy jakości życia w regionach lotniskowych, tj. łagodzenie negatywnych skutków funkcjonowania lotnisk, system indywidualnych rekompensat, inwestowanie oraz zarządzanie i koordynacja różnych działań. Ponadto przedstawiona została rola władz regionalnych i lokalnym w zakresie poprawy jakości życia w regionach lotniskowych.
The article concerns quality of life in airport regions, which in EU countries plays stronger part in process of regional and local spatial planning and airport’s development. The article presents experiences of European regions and cities collected during the realization of QLAIR (Quality of Life in Airport Regions) project. In the article the policies of quality of life’s improvement are discusses. These are: mitigation of negative effects, individual compensation scheme, investment in the surrounding area and governance and coordination between public policies. Moreover, there is presented role of regional and local authorities in improving quality of life in airport regions.

Are regional airports economic effectiveness-oriented? Evidence from Poland Striving for a satisfactory level of effectiveness, managers must take actions aimed at achieving the set objectives and at reacting flexibly to changes that take place in the environment. They can do it by referring to the concept of dynamic capabilities that draw attention to a specific category of competences. Assuming that dynamic capabilities can be developed in any type of organisation, the article attempts to answer the question about the reasons for the differences in economic effectiveness of 13 Polish regional airports and 458 private enterprises. The results suggest that the category of economic effectiveness is important not only for private enterprises but also for regional airports. The findings reveal that the development of dynamic capabilities is conditioned not only by the period of the enterprise’s existence but also by the context of its operation, primarily the industry context.

Aim/purpose - Multiple factors affect a passenger's origin and destination airport choice. This study explores some of the leading indicators associated with performance in cities with more than one airport. Two important Multi-Airport Systems (MAS) in Brazil were the object of this study: São Paulo (Congonhas and Guarulhos) and Rio de Janeiro (Santos Dumont and Galeão), the most significant demand-generating centers in the country and the most critical distribution centers of flights from South America. Design/methodology/approach - Using public databases presenting the evolution of supply and demand from 2013 to 2018, the evolution of flights, and the sales by airlines in the same period, we estimated a linear model using panel data on a multiple linear regression with fixed effects. Findings - One of the results observed is that competition between airlines positively affects prices for consumers, the industry, and tourism, which is vital for the country. Research implications/limitations - The limitation of the findings is the lack of current data. Originality/value/contribution - In filling the gap in the literature on the evolution of supply and demand in the Brazilian aviation market, the study evaluates some of the leading indicators associated with performance in cities with more than one airport.

W niniejszym artykule opisany został potencjał polskiego rynku regionalnych przewozów lotniczych. Wykonano analizy możliwości, jakie ma przed sobą pasażerski krajowy transport lotniczy. Zwrócono uwagę na zmiany, jakie może przynieść pojawienie się nowego przewoźnika, a także reakcje firm konkurencyjnych. Autorzy wykonali analizę obecnie funkcjonujących przewoźników, czyli LOT-u i EuroLOT-u, jak również nieistniejącego już przewoźnika OLT Express. Przedstawiono ryzyko, jakie niesie za sobą wprowadzenie dumpingo-wych cen przewozów, a z drugiej strony szansę generowane przez wzrost liczby pasażerów korzystających z regionalnych podróży lotniczych przy niskich cenach. Zauważono, że potencjał w przewozach krajowych drogą powietrzną jest ogromny. Autorzy zwrócili uwagę na rozwój infrastruktury lotniczej. Porty lotnicze, chcąc sprostać potrzebom pasażerów, a także zwiększyć komfort podróży, kładą nacisk na rozbudowę i modernizację. Nie bez znaczenia pozostaje również systemowe podejście do transportu lotniczego. Dostępność portów jest obecnie stale rozwijana. Z uwagi na czas, koszt podróży, a także komfort pasażerów najkorzystniejsze jest łączenie portów lotniczych z centrami miast za pomocą kolei. Takie rozwiązania zostały już wdrożone w Krakowie i Warszawie, a w planach jest stworzenie takich połączeń również dla kolejnych obiektów, między innymi w budowanym porcie w Lublinie. Zwrócono również uwagę na potrzebę konkurencyjności regionalnego transportu lotniczego z innymi gałęziami transportu. W podróżach na większe odległości, gdzie czas i wygoda podróży są istotne, a przy zwiększającej się cenie paliwa, koszty podobne, lot samolotem staje się konkurencyjny w stosunku dopodróży samochodem lub pociągiem.
This paper describes the capabilities of the Polish market of regional air transport. The stress was put on the changes brought about by a new carrier, and the reactions of competitors. The authors performed an analysis of current operating carriers, as well as now defunct carrier - OLT Express. The paper presents the risk posed by the introduetion of dumping prices, and on the other hand the chances generated by the increase of the number of passengers. It was noted that the potential for domestic air route is enormous. The authors drew attention to the development of aviation infrastructure. Not without significance is also a systematic approach to air transport. Airportss availability is currently being developed. The best in terms of time, cost and comfort is to connect airports and city centers via raił. These solutions have already been implemented in Kraków and Warsaw, and there are plans to create such conneetions also for other facilities. The need for the regional competitiveness of air transport with other modes of transport was noted. For journeys over longer distances, where the travel time and comfort are important, and with the inereasing price of fuel, the cost of flight becomes competitive to travel by car or train.

Głównym celem badań jest ocena znaczenia lotnisk poradzieckich w kształtowaniu się nowych przestrzeni gospodarczych zachodnich regionów Polski. Badanie objęło analizę wybranych elementów za-gospodarowania przestrzennego siedmiu lotnisk użytkowanych przed 1989 r. przez wojska Armii Radziec-kiej. Analiza była oparta o dane pozyskane z BDOT oraz dane dotyczące aktywności gospodarczej zebrane podczas badań terenowych. Na podstawie wyników stwierdzono, że odpowiednie wykorzystanie terenów dawnych lotnisk może sprzyjać rozwojowi gospodarczemu gmin, w których się one znajdują. Jednakże niezwykle istotną rolę odgrywa lokalizacja tego rodzaju terenów, w dużej mierze warunkująca osiągnięcie sukcesu w ich wykorzystaniu na cele gospodarcze.
The main purpose of the article was to identify the importance of post-Soviet airports in the shaping of new economic spaces in the western regions of Poland. The study included an analysis of selected aspects of spatial development of seven airports used before 1989 by the Soviet Army. The analysis was based on data obtained from the Topographic Objects Database and data on economic activity collected during field studies. The study showed that the appropriate use of the areas of former airports may be conducive to the economic development of the municipalities in which they are located. However, an extremely impor-tant role is played by the factors associated with the location of post-military area, largely conditioning the achievement of success in their use for economic purposes.

Research background: The economic benefits that arise with the development of airport infrastructure are accompanied by negative externalities. Legal, technical and institutional instruments are used to mitigate or limit these effects. It involves state intervention in the use of real estate located in the vicinity of the airport, and the cost of such an intervention. On the other hand, as a result of state interventions, real estate market mechanisms are distorted. The balance on the market, prices and as a result the number of transactions is changing. Purpose of the article: The study evaluates adaptive efficiency, which is known as the ability of the real estate market system to adapt to the purpose of public intervention. The effectiveness of state intervention is measured as the difference between market transaction costs and costs after intervention. The former means the full coverage of all individual claims of property owners at market prices. However, after the intervention, these are costs of compensation and litigation (judicial, expert opinions, provisions for payment of damages), as well as the risk of the airport's insolvency. The state intervention system is also assessed through the prism of the lack of a methodology for assessing damages and subjective claims of property owners. The article focuses on the effects of the negative impact of airport noise resulting in limitations to residential buildings' usability and depreciation of their market value. The study is based on the example of one regional airport. Methods: The study evaluates the current compensation model related to the introduction of Limited Land Use Areas around airports in Poland, based on Poznan-Lawica airport case study. In the empirical part of the paper, we use regression analysis to examine the value of compensations for loss of property value ruled by courts, and duration analysis to explore court procedure duration time. Findings & Value added: This research is one of the important basic research on socio-spatial connection near an airport in Poland. We argue that the current practice related to compensation ruled by courts has substantial flaws (including the methodical error regarding the valuation of claims, where acoustic damage and value loss claims are treated as unrelated, thus both compensations are independently assessed). With the help of the Cox model, we demonstrate that the long distance from the airport and the location within the LUA increase the likelihood of court proceedings ending. The results are important due to the pending disputes and the costs threatening the functioning of airports in Poland.

The world economic crisis has had a big impact on the air transport business efficiency. Its effects are still present and require difficult and costly actions to be taken not only by airports managements, but also urban agglomerations’ authorities. Managers responsible for air transport coordination, with their limited investment funds, are forced to continuously improve the effectiveness of f light economics and of airports’ utilization. The article presents the outcomes of the economic crisis of the air transport busi- ness in Poland. It describes the circumstances conditioning the development of Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport and its future in a staggering economy, with special consideration to investments widening the availability of airport services within the urban agglomeration.

Opis:
This paper deals with public service obligation, a form of state aid that applies to air services. The paper first provides general information on the European legislation applying to this form of state aid, and elaborates the legal framework and general principles. The second part is dedicated to a comparison of a similar subsidizing programme in the USA and Australia. An examination of current imposed public service obligation routes in Europe is provided in the following section. The coefficients defining the number of imposed PSO routes per various geo-economic variables have been defined.
