Opis:
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is well known method for reducing NOx emission in diesel engine exhaust gas. Urea-water solution (UWS) injected into hot stream decomposes due to thermolysis into ammonia and isocyanic acid which hydrolyses further into more ammonia and carbon dioxide. Resultant ammonia is the NOx reductor, producing water vapour and carbon dioxide from the reduction reaction. To provide sufficient NOx reduction efficiency, UWS needs to be properly atomized and mixed with exhaust gas. However, due to more and more restrictive emissions regulations provided by European Union and Close Coupled trend of aftertreatment systems in vehicles the design process is very complex and demanding. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are integral part of product development, allowing save time and reduce costs of preparing prototypes for further tests. However, it is necessary to understand all the processes and problems connected with NOx reduction in SCR system. Strong turbulent flow of hot stream gas, urea-water solution spray injection, droplets interaction with wall, wallfilm generation are included. The objective of this work is to investigate the impact of heat transfer modelling inside mixing elements of SCR system on urea mixing uniformity and wallfilm deposit on the walls of the system. Simplified and more complex approach is compared with no heat transfer cases. All the simulations were conducted using AVL FIRETM software. Results showed that wall heat transfer might have an impact on mixing efficiency and wallfilm formulation. It is necessary to take into account the effect of mixing elements heat conduction in CFD simulations during the aftertreatment design process.

Opis:
Air pollution has become an important worldwide problem. The European Commission credits road and water transport as the major source of NOx pollution, and of being responsible for around 50% of the total air pollution in urban areas. In Poland, around 45% of the country NOx emissions are attributed to transportation. During the last decade, the use of SCR technologies have gained popularity as a method for NOx reduction, the technology is widely considered as one of the solutions for road transport emissions. SCR technology had previously been employed in stationary plants, maritime transportation and other installations using combustion processes in which exhaust conditions are easier to control. The advance on the technology led to the introduction of the first heavy-duty vehicle with an SCR system into the market in 2004. New technologies and applications are constantly appearing, for example, SCR exhaust gas cleaning systems for reciprocating engines are still under development and compression ignition engines can be found in a number of different applications. The technology still needs to be studied and improved as constant problems and knowledge is required in issues such as urea injection, crystallization and NOx reduction efficiency. Moreover, the designs intended for heavy duty vehicles need to meet vehicle limitations and EURO emissions restrictions. This paper presents a review of the different SCR system designs derived from the various factors and regulations in the automotive industry, which have influenced the technology, along with a parametric study of a proprietary SCR system for heavy-duty application.

Opis:
W artykule omówiony został wpływ konfiguracji pozasilnikowych układów oczyszczania spalin na uzyskiwaną temperaturą gazów w poszczególnych punktach układu wylotowego. Reaktory katalityczne i filtry do skutecznego oczyszczania gazów wymagają m. in. określonej temperatury.
The article discusses the effect of exhaust aftertreatment systems configuration on the resulting exhaust gas temperature at selected points of the exhaust system. Catalytic reactors and particle filters must reach a specific temperature in order to effectively perform their functions. The temperature they obtain decreases with the increasing distance from the exhaust manifold, as the gases cool along the way. The performed research consisted of measuring the exhaust gas temperature in various places of the exhaust system in simulated driving conditions mapped on the dynamic engine brake station in the aspect of using a particulate filter and its resulting operating efficiency due to the temperature. Measuring the temperature using thermocouples allowed to assess the probability of achieving full operation of the filters during urban and extra-urban exploitation in a simulation of real driving conditions.

The article discusses the results of bench tests that monitor the increase of NO2 emissions in the heavy duty vehicles engines exhausts as a result of the use of particulate matter filters. The use of passive particulate matter filters inevitably leads to an increase in NO2 emissions from the engine. The particularly intensive increase in the emissions occurs when SCR reactors are shut off, which is still a common practice among drivers. NO2 concentrations in exhaust gases of DPF-equipped engines reach concentration dangerous for human health and life. The causes of the NO2 formation in the vehicles’ exhaust systems, the harmfulness of this chemical, and the results of NO2 measurements in different tests, are discussed. In addition, the effect of the presence of this compound on the accuracy of opacity measurement is discussed.

Opis:
The stringent pollutant and CO2 emission limitation in upcoming legislation norms for Diesel passenger car applications force the introduction of exhaust aftertreatment systems with maximum purification and energetic efficiency. The state-off-the-art technologies for NOx reduction, NOx storage and reduction catalyst (NSC) and selective catalytic reduction catalyst (SCR), show challenges for robust performance under strongly extended emission relevant operation conditions from cold start to high engine load and speed. One technical solution is the combination of NSC and passive SCR. This paper presents the experimental results obtained in the EUproject “Powerful”. On engine test bench and demonstrator vehicle, an exhaust aftertreatment system combining NSC, passive SCR and fuel reformer technology was developed and experimentally investigated steady-state and on road. The engine independent NSC operation offers potentials for lowered fuel consumption penalty by avoiding engine rich operation. The intrinsic NH3 formation during the NSC regeneration is used for additional NOx conversion on the passive SCR and reduces NOx and CO2 emission.

Opis:
This paper describes the methodology and test results of diesel particulate filter (DPF) functional testing performed on non-road compression ignition engine application installed on test bed. The scope of work included testing of various DPF regeneration strategies, backpressure and balance point tests and emission performance evaluation during a legislative test cycle. The aim of this study was to observe and investigate the influence of raw exhaust gas parameters on DPF functionality in terms of filtration efficiency, soot loading, type and duration of the regeneration and emission performance. Under investigation was the capability of soot burning rate and fuel penalty. The DPF sample under test was part of the complete exhaust aftertreatment system (ATS) which consisted of: a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a DPF and a selective catalytic reduction system (SCR) with urea dosing and ammonia slip catalyst (ASC). Testing was carried out on a heavy-duty diesel engine installed on a test stand with a dynamic dynamometer and equipped with an emission bench. The test program allowed to assess the engine matching to exhaust aftertreatment system with regard to emissions compliance, in-service operation and necessary engine control unit (ECU) calibration works. The results show the influence of the DPF regeneration strategy on its duration and on the soot mass burn rate. Passive DPF regeneration was a favorable mode of DPF cleaning, due to lack of fuel penalty and lower aging impact on the entire ATS. Optimization of soot flow rate, exhaust gas temperature and the chemistry of the DOC/DPF was further recommended to ensure the long-term durability of the entire system.

This paper provides a general review of light-duty (LD) and heavy-duty (HD) regulations, engine technology, and key emission control strategies. The US is placing a stronger emphasis on laboratory emissions, and the LD regulations are about an order of magnitude tighter than Euro 6, but Europe is focusing on real-world reductions. The California HD low-NOx regulation is advancing and may be proposed in 2017/18 for implementation in 2023+. The second phase of US HD greenhouse gas regulations propose another 25-30% tightening beyond Phase 1, beginning in 2021. LD and HD engine technology continues showing marked improvements in engine efficiency. LD gasoline concepts are closing the gap with diesel. HD engines are demonstrating more than 50% BTE using methods that can reasonably be commercialized. LD and HD diesel NOx technology trends are also summarized. NOx storage catalysts and SCR combinations are the lead approach to meeting the LD regulations. Numerous advanced NOx technologies are being evaluated and some promise for meeting the California HD low NOx targets. Oxidation catalysts are improved for both diesel and methane oxidation applications. Gasoline particulate filters (GPF) are the lead approach to reducing particles from gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. They reduce PAH emissions, and catalyzed versions can be designed for low back pressure. Regeneration largely occurs during hot decelerations.

Opis:
The field of vehicular exhaust emissions is experiencing wide-ranging and rapid changes. Air quality is very high on the political agenda and pressure remains to limit and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the road transport sector. In addition to limits being increasingly stringent, the list of parameters subject to legal limits are slowly expanding – and, most importantly, these limits must be met under a wide wide range of conditions. A range of strategies are available to overcome these difficulties, which was explored during the 5th International Exhaust Emissions Symposium (IEES) hosted at BOSMAL in May 2016. This paper reports and summarises the topics of the 5th IEES and attempts a synthesis on the current status of the field and what the coming years may hold for the automotive and fuel industries and other allied fields.
