Opis:
The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis that positive affective tone of narratives is connected to the experience of posttraumatic growth among transplant patients. Kidney transplant patients (N = 51) and liver transplant patients (N = 48) participated in the study. In the first stage, about 10 weeks after transplant, the participants told two stories about important, freely chosen events from their lives. During the second meeting 10-12 months later we measured posttraumatic growth. Results indicated that the affective tone of narratives about past events was associated with the level of post-traumatic growth measured 10-12 months later. This proves that the affective tone of narratives about life, understood as a relatively constant individual characteristic, promote posttraumatic growth.

Opis:
The article aims to contribute to the gentrification debate by proposing a conceptual apparatus attuned to the study of how the everyday lived experience of neighbourhood change can have consequences for wellbeing. Accordingly, the concept of affective atmosphere, grounded within the non-representational theory, is proposed to capture nuances’ affective impact within shifting socio-material assemblages of local environments. A literature review was conducted to examine the ways in which the concept of affective atmosphere enhances the understanding of how changes in the socio-material configurations of space affect the wellbeing of local communities. The proposed framework captures the affective strain of gentrification as emerging within the specificities of socio-material constellations of local environments. Moreover, the advantage of the proposed framework was identified in its capacity to link particular manifestations of gentrification-related violence to overarching regularities of affective capitalism. The article urges for increased sensitivity to nuances of neighbourhood change, posing a potential threat to wellbeing even at the early stages of gentrification. Due to the decision to prioritise thoroughness of analysis over scale, the limitation of this article is its restrictive scope of research.

This article highlights the role of psychiatric illness, mainly the affective disorders, in the work of famous painters throughout the centuries. Especially paintings from well-known artists such as Pieter Bruegel, Albrecht Dürer, Henri de Toulouse – Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh, Edward Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Frida Kahlo and Lucian Freud are discussed in detail. While pain and disease are unavoidable parts of human life artists are especially sensitive to suffering and melancholy. Artists should create honest and true art which gives a reflection of the times they live in. Through their art they should give a reason to look closer and understand people and circumstances. Overidentification of the artist with that mission may, however, lead to overwhelmingly deep compassion and may cause depression. On the positive side art may contribute to higher awareness concerning many diseases and thus provide a strong impulse to more intense research activity or social tolerance, which finally will considerably improve the situation of the patients.

This article features a short review of analyzing affective stance in interaction. Additionally, it exemplifies strategies of processing emotions in instructional settings by contrasting Pilates and physical therapy in neurorehabilitation. For example, negative emotions during physical therapy are handled with verbal or bodily means. The emotional state while doing Pilates is associated with the relationship between trainer and client, with group cohesion, with having fun during physical activity and with sustaining motivation. The corpus for the multimodal analysis are video tapings of natural interactions.

The purpose of the article is to present the main problems connected with the research into mood influence on different areas of human functioning. The author enumerates five basic problems which are: (1) the ambiguous use of the terms which refer to the affective processes, (2) the lack of mood induction procedure and the mood estimation measures which would prevent the subjects from guessing the aim of the study, (3) in the case of research into relatively permanent mood, the inconsistency which makes it impossible to clearly distinguish the individuals in a depressive mood from those who have been clinically diagnosed as suffering from depression, (4) the lack of research done on the subjects who are constantly in a positive mood, (5) the relatively small amount of research dealing with mood influence on specific aspects of human functioning as well as with meditative mechanisms. According to the author, finding the solution to the observed problems would make it possible to explain a lot of discrepancies in the results of already-conducted research.

The aim of the article is to highlight the validity od Stroop paradigm in neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric diagnosis of depressin, used as a tool for assessing cognitive functioning, but also claryfying the etiopathology of depressive disorders. The first of the article is a review of previous reports, describing resting brain activity abnormalities in affective disorders called neurocorrelates of depression. Then the most common cognitive dysfunctions represented by unipolar and bipolar patents will be discussed brefly and the impact of these dysfuctionts on Stroop test performance. In the last two parts of the article you can find a review of neuroimaging studies during Stroop task performance among healthy individuals and also the comparisons of brain activity during the Stroop interference effect in the group of healthy and depressive subjects. Different brain activity during stroop task among patients suffering from depression comaring with healthy individuals and some differences in brain pattern during the same cognitive task among unipolar and bipolar individuals may indicate the validity of Stroop test in neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric diagnosis.

The paper explores situational and dispositional underpinnings of cooperative behavior. According to psychological research, cooperation is strongly related to affective states (Forgas, 1998) and personality dimensions (Volk, Thöni, & Ruigrok, 2011). In an experimental study we examined the conditions under which people cooperate with each other. The dispositional traits of co-workers (personality), the contribution to a collaborative effort, and a situational factor – ambient odor condition were taken into consideration. A one-way ANOVA revealed that compared to a malodorous condition, both the pleasant odor condition and the natural odor condition showed higher rates of cooperation. Further analysis indicated that only malodors influenced affective states which in turn determined social decisions. Although we found effects for the participants’ agreeableness and the coworker’s contribution to a joint work, they appeared to play a less critical role than affective states induced by the experimental odor conditions tested here.

Opis:
While personality is strongly related to experienced emotions, few studies examined the role of personality traits on affective forecasting. In the present study, we investigated the relationships between extraversion and neuroticism personality traits and affective predictions about academic performance. Participants were asked to predict their emotional reactions two months before they will get their results for one important exam. At the same time, personality was assessed with the Big Five Inventory. All the participants were contacted by a text message eight hours after that the results were available, and they were requested to rate their experienced affective state. Results show moderate negative correlations between neuroticism and both predicted and experienced feelings, and that extraversion exhibits a weak positive correlation with predicted feelings, but not with experienced feelings. Taken together, these findings confirm that extraversion and neuroticism shape emotional forecasts, and suggest that affective forecasting interventions based on personality could probably enhance their efficiencies.

Various studies have indicated that children’s preferences are biased towards those who have more resources or who are considered more fortunate than others. Little is known, however, about whether this preference translates to a moral assessment of the character of those with more or less resources. Our study included 46 children aged four to five. We asked participants to indicate their preference for the richer and the poorer in desirable resources. We also asked them to attribute the moral character of the moral agent or moral recipient. The children revealed a strong bias towards the advantaged character. Not only did they prefer him as a future friend, they also attributed morally positive social roles to him.

The aim of this article is to present trends in the latest literature about puberty of YA for girls against the background of the tradition of this literature genre. The main area of interest covers novels from the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The description of the characteristic development lines of this genre is the background for the analysis of novel Fanfik by Natalia Osińska from 2016. This novel is written using affective poetics toolbox. As a result the model of affective literature, specific reading practices and performative function of young adult is obtained. The authors of analyzed novel start from their own affects, experiences and observations and reach to the subject, teenage audiences, enabling not only a better understanding of the world and other people, but also they convey various, culturally supported, though not easy to implement decision models. The world presented in the novel is not always a friendly one and often controversial. Characters’ behaviour is not obvious but a thought-provoking axiological proposition. An important point of this article is presenting Fanfik as aconscious and ostentatious referencing to traditional presentation of puberty in cycle of the novels by Małgorzata Musierowicz “Jeżycjada”.

Searching for the Smells of the Past – Affective Memory in Novels by Marcel Proust Marcel Proust’s epic work In Search of Lost Time (Remembrance of Thing Past) shows an innovative way of practicing literature as the artist’s struggle with time. This series of works, earning the author a place in the literary pantheon, depicts the writer’s desire to rediscover intensity with which he used to experience sensory stimuli and his wish to return to the happy times of his childhood and youth. This explains the special role of emotional memory that characterises Proust’s monumental work. The complex perceptual and cognitive mechanism of the narrator becomes the keynote of the work, which is saturated with smells of the past, with a clear dominance of subjective perception and description of the remembered events.

Affective management is a new concept which suggests that top managers should take stakeholders’ affective experiences into account when making their management decisions. To show that this concept could contribute to the improvement of management performance in organizations, this study investigated the correlations between the affectiveness of top management and management performance indices. Our questionnaire based on the Affective Management Scorecard was employed to assess top managers’ recognition of the importance, as well as the actual practices of affective management. Top managers from 43 Thai organizations participated in the study. A correlation analysis was conducted to observe whether affective management indices would correlate with management performance indices, such as return on equity, return on assets, price to earnings ratio, and price to book value ratio. The findings showed that the results for organizations practicing affective management were positively correlated with their management performance in both profitability and good perceptions by investors.

Introduction: As a major interpersonal relationship in human life, marriage greatly influences the psycho-physical condition of both husband and wife. Given increasing divorce rates, however, it is crucial for prophylaxis and therapy to identify factors that impact marriage quality. Purpose: To describe how relationship satisfaction relates to a positive affective shift. Materials and methods: Two hundred married couples were grouped as having either high or low relationship satisfaction and evaluated by taking the Good Marriage Questionnaire. Each couple’s affective sphere was measured using the semantic differential. Results: Wives and husbands with higher relationship satisfaction are characterized by a stronger positive affective shift than those with lower relationship satisfaction. Conclusions: A positive affective shift cultivates favourable conditions for relationship satisfaction, which encourages spouses to develop and improve the quality of their marriage.

Contemporary cognitive science attempts to provide computational models that describe how consciousness and emotion constitute adaptive behavior. Given the recent neurobiological view that highlights the fact that the cognitive and emotional regions of the brain work together to achieve conscious behavior, it was shown that signal-detection theory (SDT) can effectively capture the notion of the consciousness–emotion interactions that underlie emotional experience. In particular, I have demonstrated that the hierarchical SDT model is capable of estimating different levels of the hierarchical organization of emotional experience. I have also shown that the threshold SDT model predicts that the formation of emotion experience requires a discrete decision space, which implies that the neural representations of emotion are mediated by thresholds to be experienced consciously. The application of both computational SDT models seems to be a promising advance for studying consciousness–emotion interactions.
