Opis:
When it comes to design, are aesthetic and ethical values oppositional to each other as they have been considered to be, or are they compatible and complementary? Design theorists and critics often distance themselves from aesthetic assumptions, focusing on ethical foundations and values based on duties towards another person (designer for the user) or responsibility However, aesthetic values are clearly inscribed in the field of design. Firstly, because design is related to the appearance (aestheticization of reality) – form, harmony, and proportion between elements – but also to manipulation or simulation (aestheticization of design). In design as a cultural area, values interpenetrate and, at the same time, are ethical, social and aesthetic in their form and contexts; the aesthetic values especially permeate everything. They are not isolated in any separate order but rather they combine with other types of values.

in every given period one can observe different attitudes towards old age, death and the elderly, which are shown through varied stances and ideas about this specific period of human life. The reality of the xxicentury often regarded as “vision-centric” is dominated by the cult of beauty and youth which creates increasingly demanding requirements, rela-ted mainly to the attractiveness of appearance, of the body – especially the one belonging to the elderly. The increase in the number of senior citizens compared to the rest of the society that can be witnessed nowadays leads to the elderly being amore carefully examined social group. Mediated by the media discourse the images of the elderly are becoming more common and therefore the author’s attempt at reconstructing the postmodern strategy of the rendering of late adulthood seems to be an interesting and important topic to consider.

The paper analyzes the presence of the remains of ammonites and belemnites in the stones used to build the elevations of houses in modern Polish cities. The process of aestheticizing buildings is the reason for fossilized cephalopods being moved from the natural environment into urban space. I consider whether the use of such materials leads merely to making the buildings look more attractive or if this process provides an opportunity to interpret these buildings in an alternative way, which goes beyond aesthetic categories and is related to the fact that the fossils have been moved from the natural world into the cultural sphere. The limestone elements of architecture also allow one to look at the city as a unique museum of cultural and natural history.

The present paper deals with the problem of the digital-culture-public-philosophy as a possible response of those philosophers who see the need to face the challenges of the Internet and the visual culture that constitutes an important part of the Internet cultural space. It claims that this type of philosophy would have to, among many other things, modify and broaden philosophers’ traditional mode of communication. It would have to expand its textual, or mainly text-related, communication mode into the aesthetic and visual communication mode. More precisely, philosophers would have to learn how to aestheticize and visualize their ethical (epistemic, ontological, social) narratives by using some digital tools – YouTube clips for example.

Fictional serial killers often appear attractive, since the authors and film directors deliberately employ certain techniques to depict the villains as seductive and manipulate readers/spectators into forming a bond with devious protagonists. This article argues that by virtue of different stylistic and literary devices, the villains presented in contemporary texts are aestheticized. Moreover, it also explains why the reader/audience often sympathizes with the murderer rather than the victim.

In contemporary culture, many categories are separated from metaphysical premises. Currently, man feels called to create his unique lifestyle, to pursue his humanity free from external religious, social, or political influences. Today’s somatic turn in culture means that the body is seen as the source of all values. This turn is directed not so much at the outer form of the body but our inner experience and spirituality. Secularization encourages us to consider ourselves, our happiness, in more earthly and carnal terms with almost religious adoration.

The choice of means is correspondent to intellectual, aesthetic and ethic positions developed by Wilde as a critic in his theoretical works. Confessional Wilde puts forward style, imagination and reinvention of the Self with the help of masks, scripts and allusions to literary and non-literary sources. It is claimed that there are various allusions to Greek life and its cultural reinvestigation in Wilde’s time, and to different aspects of Christian aesthetics and mythology.

Opis:
The paper offers a contribution to the contemporary discussion on the hiddenness argument as it was formulated by J.L. Schellenberg. Starting from the famous statement of John of the Cross on the ultimate Word of God, it focuses on the Book of Revelation as somehow the very incarnation of such a word. Two rival interpretations of the chosen book are examined and confronted: one by D.H. Lawrence, and the other inspired by some selected writings of Silouan the Athonite. The former represents rather a critical and deconstructionist endeavour even if it is not totally deprived of a positive meaning (the forgotten vitality of the apocalyptic symbols). The latter suggests another hermeneutical possibility: the constructive and recapitulative one. This interpretation inspired by the exceptional hesychastic experience opens a practical orientation in reading of the Revelation and may be translated into more aesthetical terms. The perspective thus privileged to renew the senses seems to confirm backwardly the recapitulative reading following the hesychastic inspiration.

The article focuses on the problem of body aestheticiziation as a source of social prestige in the con- sumer society. It also contains an attempt to verify the thesis that the body aestheticization is used as a tool to multiply the resources of social prestige. The results of the research on aestheticization of the appearance presented in the paper indicate that firmly fixed beliefs about social benefits that result from physical attractiveness are strongly entrenched among consumers of the beauty market. Nearly half of Poles claim that the external appearance is one of the most important values – it plays a deci- sive role in both personal and professional success. These beliefs are also illustrated in an observable, statistical increase in the economic value of the Polish beauty market from the current PLN 16 billion to PLN 20 billion forecast for 2021. Additionally, the analysis of secondary data confirms the general thesis that the aestheticization of the body is used to increase social prestige.

This article is an attempt to show one of the most important, in the author’s opinion, changes that took place in the cultural and historical development of yoga, namely the change of direction in thinking and perceiving the body in the yoga practice, being the transition from the model named as “off the body” (functioning in the pre-modern, traditional yoga) to the model named as “to the body” (functioning in the modern forms of yoga). Both models have been shown through the prism of three values that in today’s yoga practice (especially in the mass practice) are perceived through the prism of the body and through the body are realized. These values have been defined as: “healthy body”, “beautiful body” (aesthetically perfect) and “social body”. Description of both models has been supplemented with basic information about those processes which enabled the aforementioned transition to occur, changing the body-tool into the body-goal.

Opis:
Contemporary Russian ‘new drama’ is a controversy with a range of traditions in art, an attempt to protest against the established aesthetic forms which express the main line of modern theatre and drama. There is an idea of the relationship between literature and reality in the ‘new drama’ when the penetration into reality expresses a literary text de-aestheticization process. We determine the method of the Russian ‘new drama’ as deconstruction, which consists in the fact that the principle of authenticity in cooperation with the reality and its fixation are declared in contemporary ‘new drama’. First of all it is manifested in the choice of ‘material’ for the plays. Deconstruction appears with respect to the traditional ‘cultural’ drama topics. The taboo of physiological presentation is removed, violence becomes the basis of dramatic experience, and antiaesthetizm – the principle of its implementation. In the atmosphere of the ‘bottom of life’ every dramatic situation takes place. The antiheroes become heroes of the ‘new drama’. The character which is the most important category for drama is subject to deconstruction. The technique Verbatim (‘literally’), which is the basis of the documentary drama method, does not imply the well-defined author’s nature. The playwright is just a developer of issues and a ‘recording’ person. Religious, literary and historical myths undergo destruction. Finally, the deconstruction method influences poetics and the ‘new drama’ structure. The drama genre specificity is finally destroyed, there is even no attempt to identify the play genre. Thus, the multileveled deconstruction method becomes a determining factor for the ‘new drama’. This trend of simplification, fundamental principles de-aestheticization is not only in the drama but in the traditional relationship between art and reality.

Discussion about the borders restricting (unavoidable today) aestheticization of memory about the Holocaust experience is still valid – in the article are recalled some different strategies of remembering the Holocaust in the art using photography. Two of the artistic projects (Powidoki by Zbigniew Libera and Pocztówki z Auschwitz by Paweł Szypulski) are using authentic photographs to initialize the discussion about trivialization of image, removing it from its original context and, at the same time, “blunting” the sensitivity of the recipient. The other two works (Auschwitz, co ja tu robię by Mikołaj Grynberg and Miejsca nieparzyste by Elżbieta Janicka) are suspended between conversation and silence (two classic poles of memory about the Holocaust). All of these works are disputing with “fixed” models and imaginary experiences, deconstructing pathos, they are talking about the blurring memories and manipulating with memory, about competition of different historic narrations and attempts at overtaking the past, passing the traumatic experiences of the war and the Holocaust to the next generations.

The article is a polemic with Wolfgang Welsch's criticism of the aestheticization process presented in his article entitled ‘Aestheticization Processes. Phenomena, Distinctions and Prospects’. Its purpose is to show that arguments suggesting a negative assessment of this phenomenon are unfounded and the aestheticization should be rather treated as a sign of human civilization welfare which revealing favourable perspectives than as a problem threatens a degeneration or the fall of values. In the first part of the text, I present the definition of aestheticization and some examples of it. Next, I analyse the potentially negative consequences of this process and fears about its further development pointed out by Welsch. I argue that the aestheticization is a positive phenomenon because people may care of aesthetic values only after satisfying more basic needs. The real consequence of this process is a better understanding of the reality, as the aestheticization emphasizes its immanent susceptibility to modelling which simultaneously enhance a possibilities of influencing on it by the human will. Therefore, instead of a danger for humanity, aestheticization may become a breakthrough in the development of our civilization.

Opis:
The starting point for analyzing aestheticization processes in contemporary documentary photography in this text are both the “poetic” images of lightness in literature and culture analyzed in a lecture by Italo Calvino (Six Memos for the Next Millennium) and the critical thought of Wolfgang Welsch on intentional aestheticization processes in the real world. According to Welsch, these processes, through specific procedures of “lavishing lightness”, cease to be a binding image of the world and become part of a culture game (Grenzgange der Asthetik). Examples selected for analysis include award-winning documentary photography, including war photography, represented by the work of Georges Merillon, Sebastiao Salgado, Luc Delahaye, Simon Norfolk and Tim Hetherington. These ‘aestheticization procedures’ are outlined in this text in the context of the history of photography perceived as its “struggle” for a place in the history of art, as well as in the context of the theoretical considerations which accompany these processes.
