The paper presents the results of a study involving 50 education majors specializing in psycho-pedagogical counselling. The aim of the study was to find out what future counsellors knew of self-help books and how they assessed their usefulness in shaping one’s future vocational role and/or in coping with one’s problems. The students were first asked to complete a survey about attitudes towards self-help literature and, then, to read a self-help book of their choice. The findings reveal that reading self-help literature can effectively support self-development and informed decision-making about one’s future career.
W tekście przedstawiono wyniki badań przeprowadzonych wśród 50 studentów pedagogiki o specjalności poradnictwo psychologiczno-pedagogiczne. Celem badań było zidentyfikowanie wiedzy przyszłych doradców na temat użyteczności poradników w kształtowaniu roli zawodowej i/lub radzeniu sobie z własnymi problemami. Studenci najpierw wypełniali ankietę dotyczącą nastawienia wobec piśmiennictwa poradnikowego, a następnie czytali wybrany przez siebie poradnik. Wyniki badań dowodzą, że lektura poradników może skutecznie wspierać procesy samorozwoju i świadome kreowanie przyszłej kariery zawodowej.

Since modern usage of the core terms is essential in the appropriate interpretation of ancient rhetoric texts, the paper starts from a discussion of semantic differences between the concepts of advice, counselling and deliberation in the Polish language. Ancient rhetoric takes as its starting point an overarching notion of ‘deliberative genre’ which includes not only laymen and expert advice, but also the political deliberation. It offers some theoretical categories, universal enough to address these apparently incompatible contexts of advice-giving and advice-taking. Rhetorical approach points out the relation between axiology and persuasive mechanisms. It identifies also some persuasive devices likely to enhance the efficiency of advice-giving, such as the use of examples and reasoning based on probability evaluation.

Artykuł prezentuje tematykę zdrowia kobiety, jego ochrony i profilaktyki w polskich czasopismach popularnonaukowych wydawanych w XIX wieku. Bazę źródłową stanowią teksty publikowane w „Dzienniku Zdrowia dla Wszystkich Stanów” (1801–1802), „Przyjacielu Zdrowia” (1861–1863), „Zdrowiu” (1877/78–1880), „Lekarzu” (1903/04–1904/05). Zasadniczym zatem założeniem badawczym było udzielenie odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy w analizowanych periodykach problematyka zdrowia kobiety zajmowała należne temu zagadnieniu miejsce.
This paper examines the coverage of women’s health issues, preventive care and prophylaxis in 19th-century Polish popular medical periodicals, in particular Dziennik Zdrowia dla Wszystkich Stanów [ Journal of Health for all Social Classes] (1801–1802), Przyjaciel Zdrowia [ Health’s Friend] (1861–1863), Zdrowie [ Health] (1877/78–1880), and Lekarz [ The Physician] (1903/04–1904/05). The authors of this study try to find an answer to the question whether those periodicals did succeed in giving women’s health issues the rank and status warranted by their significance.

This article highlights the differences in the way advice is given in German press articles for laypersons and experts. Texts on successful money management have been selected and analyzed for this purpose. The analysis focuses on macro- and microstructural elements of the texts, such as text structure, content, syntax, phraseology and terminology used, as well as non-linguistic elements.

The advice article is one of the multiple forms of expression in use among general lifestyle magazines aimed at women. Its shape, both style and structure-wise, allows authors to exhaust all the possibilities of persuasive action, which is typical for this group of magazines. The analysis of the materials, taken from ten separate magazines published in the first quarter of 2016, shows that the stylistic range of advice articles is not sophisticated, and so their style is definitely not the most important factor which determines the pleasure of reading. It is also possible to notice that in the down-market magazines (‘Dobre Rady’, ‘Naj’, ‘Pani Domu’, ‘Tina’) this type of an article is usually produced in a form of a corpus (body) made of modules, using the formula of a register. These texts are smaller in size and compositionally more simple (short sentences, usually single sentences or simple relative clauses), with regular use of a question-answer configuration, with exclamations to show emotions, and lists. The act of giving advice is generally based on direct, specific instructions, formulated in a direct style, appropriate for the ‘parenetic’ (persuasive) character of the publication. The editorial boards of magazines such as ‘Olivia’ or ‘Swiat Kobiety’ heavily emphasize the professionalism of their guidance. The authors clearly display their intent to create a more friendly relationship with their female readers, but at the same time encourage them to follow the line of argument more carefully and to think for themselves. In these texts the syntax is more complex, more varied rhetorical terms are used, and the signals of mutual dialogue are present; the factual, graphic and cognitive layer of a publication blends with its practical usage in a much better way.

This paper discusses the significance of vocational guidance in the process of making vocational choices by students of junior high schools and adults who see the possibility of retraining as an opportunity of getting a job. The significance of activities related to vocational guidance was assessed on the basis of available publications. Legal basis underlying functioning of vocational guidance institutions was analysed and the individual educational stages in the process of vocational orientation were studied. The article presents the results of empirical studies showing low efficiency of guidance institutions, which is mostly evident in the process of making educational decisions by students of junior high schools. The article ends with conclusions that aim to increase the efficiency of activities related to this subject.

The paper presents the essence of financial technologies in personal financial planning, especially robo-advice. The main aim of the paper is to describe the presumptions for the development of robo-advice. An analysis of robo-advice on personal finance management was made. The analysis was based on a review of the subject literature, and on primary and secondary research. Particular attention was paid to the intensification of activities in the implementation of modern solutions and tools supporting the management of personal finances and the gradual development of robo-advisors. Modern solutions are still struggling with great distrust on the part of their current and potential customers, and the development of modern technologies in liquidity and asset management still requires a human factor.

Design/methodology/approach: This article aims to compare the behaviour of Polish and Slovak robo-advice users in the area of personal finance management during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their expected saving, expenditure and investment action after the end of the pandemic. An important aspect of the analysis is a comparison of how the respondents use the PFM application for personal finance management. The article was based on a literature analysis, statistical data, as well as our own pioneering empirical study conducted in September 2021 among clients of the Slovak brokerage house Finax in Poland and Slovakia, which was the first entity in Poland to offer a robo-advice service. A number of statistical methods were used to analyze the collected statistical material: Mann-Whitney U Test, Pearson’s Chi-square test, Linear Regression Analysis, Kendall’s tau correlation analysis. Findings: The COVID-19 pandemic did not adversely affect the personal finance of Polish and Slovak robo-advice users and they differed in terms of investment methods during the pandemic as well as their investment plans after the pandemic. Polish and Slovak robo-advice users used spreadsheets plus special banking and non-banking applications to manage their personal finance. Sociodemographic variables did not largely explain how Poles and Slovaks used the application to configure personal finance. During the pandemic, saving was associated with the use of an application to configure personal finance and the awareness of the existence of such an application among both Poles and Slovaks. Research limitations/implications: The conclusions of the study can be used by financial institutions, FinTechs, robo-advisors and PFM application providers for managing the home budget. Originality/value: The novelty of the article is the first comparative study of robo-advice users in Poland and Slovakia on personal finance management during the COVID-19 pandemic and financial plans in the post-pandemic period.

The financial crisis and its effects are visible in many segments of the financial market. Thisis also a relatively young market for financial advice to retail clients in managing their finances.Initially, an initiative grassroots entrepreneurs and private financial institutions took the formof entities to help consumers in selecting the most appropriate credit initially, and laterinvestments, insurance, regular savings products. The success of the first companies invited to create the following, which were already other, more difficult operating conditions. Verifierof their market strategy, capital strength and management quality was just a financial crisis, whichmeant much more difficult environmental conditions and activities. As a result, you need torestructure the branch network and employment, financial innovation and expansion into newareas of counseling (SMEs). In the case of some players in the market these measures have notbeen successful, and the familiar (A–Z Finance, Money Expert) and less familiar (Homest SwissFamily Finance) issued numerous entities in the bankruptcy. The financial crisis had a negativeimpact on the effectiveness of financial advisors through the prism of their profitability. Branchout from the crisis strengthened and consolidated, but before it has a number of challenges relatedto issues of control, certification and standardization activities and restore confidence in thefinancial advisor profession, which has been undermined by the unethical actions by the financialcrisis (excessive indebtedness, exposure to excessive investment risk).

Usługa automatycznego doradztwa finansowego (robo- -doradztwa) należy do innowacji finansowych w obszarze obsługi klienta detalicznego i jest świadczona przez podmioty z segmentu technologii finansowych. Usługa ta dotyczy najczęściej doradztwa w zakresie inwestycji i polega na wykorzystaniu algorytmów i sztucznej inteligencji do zebrania informacji od klienta i zaproponowaniu rozwiązania odpowiadającego profilowi ryzyka klienta. Taki sposób obsługi zmniejsza koszty usług doradczych oraz minimalizuje lub całkowicie znosi minimalną kwotę inwestycji wymaganą przez doradcę. Ojczyzną robo-doradztwa są Stany Zjednoczone, gdzie jest największy rynek, ale robo-doradcy są obecni również w Europie. W artykule przedstawiono najważniejsze aspekty związane z definicją, regulacjami, funkcjonowaniem, wielkością rynku na świecie i w Polsce wraz z ich prognozą do 2023 r. Z przedstawionej analizy wynika, że najbardziej prawdopodobnym rozwiązaniem w przyszłości jest model hybrydowy, w którym tradycyjny doradca finansowy odpowiadający za kształtowanie relacji z klientem wykorzystuje narzędzia robo-doradztwa do obsługi klienta. Wyzwaniem dla regulatora i nadzoru finansowego będzie wprowadzenie takich norm, które zapewnią bezpieczeństwo uczestników obrotu gospodarczego, a z drugiej strony nie będą zbyt restrykcyjne i hamujące rozwój tego innowacyjnego segmentu rynku usług finansowych.
The service of automated financial advice (robo-advice) belongs to financial innovations in the area of retail customer service and is provided by entities from the financial technologies segment. This service usually concerns investment consultancy and involves the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence to collect information from the client and propose a solution corresponding to the client's risk profile. This method of service reduces the costs of consultancy services and minimizes or completely abolishes the minimum investment amount required by the adviser. The homeland of robo-advice is the United States, where the largest market is, but robo-advisers are also present in Europe. The article presents the most important aspects related to the definition, regulations, operating, size of the world and Poland's market and it forecast until 2023. The presented analysis shows that the most likely solution in the future is the hybrid model, in which a traditional financial advisor responsible for shaping customer relations uses robo-advice tools for customer service. The challenge for the regulator and financial supervision will be the introduction of such standards that will ensure the security of economic trading participants, and on the other hand will not be too restrictive and inhibit the development of this innovative segment of the financial services market.

Imponujące jest bogactwo źródeł, do których Autorce udało się dotrzeć w wyniku wieloletnich kwerend bibliotecznych i archiwalnych przeprowadzanych na terenie Górnego Śląska. Książka składa się z uwag wprowadzających, sześciu rozdziałów, rzetelnie sporządzonego wykazu źródeł oraz bibliografii. Całość dopełnia interesujący materiał ilustracyjny w postaci 36 rycin. Przygotowana przez opolską badaczkę publikacja spełnia swój cel - stanowi interesującą lekturą pozwalającą przede wszystkim poznać (ale także zrozumieć) wybrane elementy śląskiej codzienności, które do tej pory nie były przedmiotem specjalistycznych badań. Dobra rada... jest wartościową pozycją opartą na rzetelnie zgromadzonym materiale. Jej odbiorcami mogą być nie tylko pracownicy naukowi, ale również nauczyciele historii i wiedzy o regionie oraz poloniści. Z uwagi na wymiar sentymentalny podjętej tematyki książka zapewne zostanie ciepło przyjęta przez seniorów. Z pewnością sięgną po nią i młode kobiety, które w dobie powrotu do natury i troski o zdrowy sposób żywienia swoich rodzin znajdą w niej inspirację.
The publishing house of the Museum "Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park in Chorzów" published a one-hundred-and-eighty-page book by Dorota Świtała-Trybek entitled: "Good Advice is Worth Gold" or Advice for a Silesian Housewife (Based on Sources from the 19th and the First Half of the 20th Century). It is a large collection (over 600 texts) of tips mainly related to running a household, but also about home methods of treating various ailments and body care treatments. The wealth of sources that the author managed to access as a result of many years of library and archival research conducted in Upper Silesia is impressive. The book consists of introductory notes, six chapters, a carefully prepared list of sources and a bibliography. The whole is complemented by interesting illustrative material in the form of 36 pictures. The publication prepared by a researcher from Opole fulfils its purpose; it is an interesting read that allows you to learn (but also understand) selected elements of Silesian everyday life that have not been the subject of specialised research so far. Good advice... is a valuable book based on reliably collected material. It is recommended not only to academics, but also teachers of history and regional knowledge, as well as Polish language teachers. Due to the sentimental dimension of the subject matter, the book will probably be warmly received by seniors. Opis:
This paper focuses on the highest frequency lexical resources within the area of online legal counselling. The research corpus included the content of discussions held around specific problems of legal and judicial character and the attempts to find practical solutions to those problems, found on the Internet forums. The texts in question were classified here as utterances of a legal commentary character and stemming from the legal and judicial language, in opposition to strictly legal communication, which is normative and depersonalized in its nature. This paper takes a closer look at the act of counselling as a linguistic action in both Polish and German linguistics, as well as the characteristics of a specific-content Internet discussion forum as a separate, well-defined genre of text functioning within the world-wide-web and oriented towards the exchange of views and gathering information on a specific topic. Besides their knowledge-broadening functions, these forums are nowadays more frequently becoming the sites for initiating social contacts and interactions. The paper is cultural-contrastive in its character, as the analysed material comes from two parallel sources: Polish and German texts. It aims at identifying discrepancies as well as regularities in online legal advice, including specific lexical items. The conclusions are likely to serve as the basis for defining a specific “linguistic realm” of the Internet forum users in both languages in question, as well as contribute to identifying some current trends in cross-cultural communication based on modern tools and social media.

Artykuł jest próbą opisu procesów społecznych składających się na poradnictwo kariery (zawodowe). Stanowi pokłosie kilkuletnich studiów nad ideami poradnictwa i jest ich implementacją w praktyce poradnictwa kariery w Polsce. Niniejszy artykuł jest jedynie sygnalizacją tematyki, która jest przedmiotem przygotowywanej do druku książki. Przyjęcie w pracy perspektywy organizacji dynamicznych do opisu i analiz teorii naukowych oraz instytucji współpracujących i realizujących w swoich ramach poradnictwo pozwoliło na dostrzeżenie kontekstów i procesów konstruujących współczesne poradnictwo kariery w Polsce. Podejście to umożliwiło wyróżnienie wielu różnorodnych elementów lokujących się na dwóch poziomach: poziomie idei, nazywanym „poziomem pierwszym” oraz „poziomie drugim” – poziomie rozwiązań organizacyjnych. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej autor rekonstruuje w zwięzły sposób trzy idee, będące spójnymi zbiorami założeń i celów dla praktyki poradnictwa, które stanowią przedmiot naukowego dyskursu w tym zakresie. Są to: doradztwo zawodowe, poradnictwo zawodowe, poradnictwo biograficzne. W tej części autor rysuje również konteksty: polityczny, ekonomiczny i kulturowy, w jakich rozwija się współczesna myśl o poradnictwie. Szeroka perspektywa służy przedstawieniu czynników odpowiedzialnych za obserwowane procesy zmian w praktyce poradnictwa, co jest treścią trzeciej części artykułu. W drugiej części tekstu autor dokonuje próby opisu instytucji zajmujących się poradnictwem kariery, wykorzystując model organizacji dynamicznej. Prezentuje mapę przyjętych rozwiązań organizacyjnych poradnictwa w Polsce, ujmując je w trzy grupy: instytucji rozwiązujących problemy praktyczne, placówek rozwiązujących problemy teoretyczne i organów administrujących poradnictwem.
The article is an attempt at describing social processes behind career (vocational) counselling. It is a result of studies conducted on the ideas behind counselling and their implementation in practical career counselling in Poland This article is merely an introduction to the theme for a book being readied for print.. Applying the perspective of dynamic organisations for the description and analysis of scientific theory and institutions collaborating on and conducting counselling has made it possible to notice contexts and processes building contemporary career counselling in Poland. Such an approach has allowed for the distinction of various elements situated on two levels: the idea level, called "level one" and "level two" – the level of organisational solutions. The article is composed of three parts. In the first one, the author reconstructs in a concise manner three ideas, constituting coherent collections of assumptions and goals of counselling practice which are the subject of scientific discourse in this area. These are career counselling, career advice, biographical counselling. In this part the author also delineates the contexts: political, economic and cultural, within which contemporary counselling studies are developing. A wide perspective is used to demonstrate the factors behind observed changes in counselling practice, which is the content of the third part of this article. In the second part of the text, the author aims to describe the institutions charged with career counselling using the dynamic organisation model. A map of organisational solutions used in Poland is presented and they are divided into three groups: institutions solving practical problems, those solving theoretical issues and entities responsible for the administration of counselling.
