    The aim of this paper is to analyse the influence of Stanisław Lem’s works, an outstanding representative of Polish science fiction, philosopher and futurologist, on the shape of reality in which we currently function. Undoubtedly, Lem’s writings are a collection of predictions that describe, with unprecedented accuracy, the technologies of virtual reality, nanotechnology, biotechnology or robotics long before they were created. Are we living in a world that was described by one man many years ago? The research method used in this study is the content analysis of the selected novels by Stanisław Lem and the analysis of available secondary data. Let us therefore examine, on the one hand, the predictions of the Polish writer related to the development of the latest technologies, the advent of which he forecasted many years before they were created, and, on the other hand, let us consider what social consequences resulting from such a rapid progress in the field of technology the Polish futurologist warns us about.

    Opis:
    Risk is an intrinsic attribute that is existent in virtually all fields of human endeavour. The financial environment has turned out to be extremely precarious, unstable and unpredictable by dint of defective risk management practice. In giving out credit, Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) take the risk of the loan or advances (LAD) being fully or partially lost, or of the interest-income accrued not eventually materialising. The review of empirical literature revealed a plethora of approaches to measuring the credit risks facing financial institutions. They showed that the management of risks has a positive impact on profitability. Concentrating on deposit money banks in Nigeria and using Zenith Bank Plc as a case study, the objective of this study is to show in simple terms that risks can be represented by the LAD and the loan loss provision (LLP) made by DMBs, just as performance can be measured by the return on equity (ROE), while total assets (TAS) are included as the control variable. Using data extracted from the financial statements from 2002 to 2017 (16 years), it was established, by means of descriptive statistics and regression analysis, that loan loss provision does not exert a significant impact on profitability.

    Planned obsolescence is one of a company’s strategies in relation to its product. It happens in three ways: (1) the company shortens the life span of the product; (2) the repair of the product is made too expensive, and therefore the consumer decides to buy a new one; and (3) the company introduces better models. Planned obsolescence is often assessed as unethical behavior, contrary to the idea of sustainable development. In this article, I present the problem of planned obsolescence and then explain that this phenomenon brings not only losses to the consumer, but also benefits.

    The system of creating of advances for the Armed Forces of the Slovak republic from the citizens of the Slovak Republic has not been supplemented for more than 10 years. With regard to changes in the security environment as well as potential threats of a nonmilitary nature, the issue of deplorability of armed forces advances becomes a question of the most up-to-date. The fact that, for a long time, there was no exchange and, in particular, the training of advances, the back-ups of the armed forces became unusable for practical deployment. For these reasons, the political leadership of the state has also begun to re-educate and refill the process. The process of renewing training is linked to the adoption of the necessary legislative changes. As shown by the results of the first pilot training project on voluntary training and the forthcoming second year, in addition to an adequate incentive contribution, the issue of national pride and patriotism will also need to be addressed in the future.

    The world is living in a state of constant psychological warfare, technological advances and development; in the 21st century Internet governance has become a puzzle for scientists and practitioners. Virtual warfare is an alternative to real warfare, one of the biggest threats to global security. In discussing the issue, we must consider the capabilities of the world’s leading countries, and first of all, identify the threat posed by Russia, which is the core of unpredictable aggression. This state is trying to influence almost the whole world with large-scale cyber-hacking attacks and continuous disinformation and fake news. Today it is difficult to find out where the theoretical war begins and where the practical military aggression ends, so new research, recommendations, scientific papers, and defence strategies are needed. Defensive mechanisms are created for cyber-attacks and this is always followed by more powerful attacks; that is why NATO enacted Article 5 of the Washington Treaty or the principle of “collective defence.” The article discusses Russia’s aggressive policy towards Georgia during and after the Russian-Georgian war in August 2008. The features of the Russian hybrid war and cyber attacks are discussed.

    Opis:
    This paper presents the diversity of social penetration rates of information and communication technologies (ICT) among selected European countries according to European statistics on diverse ICT indicators. The data considered cover the 2006-2010 time range and was obtained from the Eurostat portal. The scope of the study selected EU countries - Belgium, Germany, France, Finland, Sweden, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia, Spain. The following ICT indicators were analyzed: percentage of households or corporations with broadband access to the Internet (HHBAI), percentage of individuals who are regularly using the Internet (IRUI), percentage of individuals who ordered goods or services over the Internet (IOGSI). These indicators of ICT penetration rate in the countries examined were analyzed in terms of the following aspects: forecasting (estimates until the year 2035), maximum speed of change of these indicators (the pace of social penetration of information technology), delays or advances (in years) as compared to the averages in EU. The results are presented in tables and graphs. General conclusions and directions of future research are indicated at the end of the paper.

    Depression in the Quaternary bedrock in the Lower Vistula Region was a main route for the Scandinavian ice sheets advancing into the Polish Lowland. At the end of the Elsterian Glaciation the receding ice sheet dammed the meltwaters in the Lower Vistula Valley and in its vicinity. The Holstein sea presumably occupied the Gulf of Gdańsk as indicated by brackish deposits of this age in the Kaliningrad District. During the Eemian Interglacial an extensive sea bay existed in the Lower Vistula Region. The Lower Vistula Region is a stratotype area for the Vistulian Glaciation (Weichselian), with several ice sheet advances, also before the Last Glacial Maximum.

    Theoretically, the task of translating from one language to another is still the same as it was only twenty or thirty years ago. In practice, however, the paths that translators take to achieve (more or less) the same results are changing all the time. This is because of changes in the media being worked in and with, as well as the increasingly powerful tools which are there for translators to use. These changes inevitably mean that the training which future translators receive has to be changed and adapted to reflect the changes in the way in which they will have to work, and even to reflect changes in the role of the translator.

    Postęp techniczny, jako jeden z podstawowych współcześnie czynników wzrostu gospodarczego i rozwoju cywilizacyjnego, może przyczynić się do rozwiązania najważniejszych problemów społeczno-ekonomicznych XXI wieku. Za właściwą organizację procesu postępu technicznego jest odpowiedzialne państwo, które powinno nim zarządzać, tzn.: inspirować, organizować, zasilać zasobowo i kontrolować jego przebieg. Pomocny w tym procesie może okazać się zarys metodologii badania efektywności postępu w skali makroekonomicznej.
    Technological progress, as one of currently basic factors of economic growth and development of civilization, can contribute to solving the most important socio-economical problems of the 21st century. However, this factor functions in a very complex way and requires creating appropriate organizational conditions and poses potential threats. The article explains the nature of technical progress, its limits and possibilities. The state is responsible for the proper organization of the process of technical progress and should manage it – i.e.: inspire, organize, supply resources and control its course. A methodological plan of researching the effectiveness of progress on the macroeconomic scale may be help in this process.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest problem identyfikacji i pomiaru efektów innowacji. Autor uważa, że nadmierne skoncentrowanie się na samym pojęciu innowacji z pominięciem problematyki rachunku efektywności ekonomiczno-społecznej nie sprzyja rzeczywistemu postępowi społeczno-ekonomicznemu. Szczególną uwagę poświęca problematyce transformacji efektów w skali mikro w efekty skali makro społecznej i ekonomicznej. Innowacje są pojęciem abstrakcyjnym stąd też siłą napędową procesów innowacyjnych jest prawidłowy rozwój gospodarki oraz dobra organizacja badań a nie odwrotnie.
    The issue of the article is the problem of identifying and measuring the effects of innovations. The author believes that excessive focus on the concept of innovation is not conducive to real economic and social progress innovation. He is convinced that innovation in the examination should pay more attention to the axiomatic system and criteria of economic calculation Particular attention is paid to the issues of transition effects at the micro level in the effects of macro-scale social and economic. In the final part of the discussion, points to the imperfections and inconsistencies rating system based on monetary values.
