Opis:
The objective of the current work was to investigate the effectiveness and mechanism of nitrate removal from an aqueous solution by adsorption using metal (Zr4+)loaded chitosan and Bentonite beads (Cs-Bn-Zr). The study was carried out in a batch system, and the effect of the critical factors on the adsorption performance, such as contact time, initial nitrate anion concentration, and adsorbent dosage, were investigated. In addition, the adsorption equilibrium models of the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms were evaluated. The modified adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and analysis with an energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The results demonstrated that at 0.2 g of CS-Bn-Zr adsorbent with an initial concentration of 50 mg/l and a contact time of 120 minutes, the maximum removal of nitrate ions was found to be 97.28%. The result demonstrated that the maximum adsorption capacity of nitrite ions on the manufactured bead was 110.46 mg/g. The Freundlich model was shown to be the most effective for the adsorbate of nitrate. The pseudo–first-order model fits the adsorption kinetic data well.

Opis:
It was found that date seeds are suitable for biochar production due to their low moisture content 8.92%, low ash yield 1.05%, and high organic matter content 78.3%. The biochar was produced by pyrolysis at 350, 450 and 550°C. The effect of pyrolysis temperature on the physicochemical characteristics of biochar was investigated. It was found that the porosity, water holding capacity, ash content, pH, organic matter, fixed carbon, and the elemental content of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, P, Zn, Ba, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Ti, and V were increased along with pyrolysis temperature. Meanwhile, the biochar yield, bulk density, and the total content of N and S were decreased. The biochar was tested as a sustainable adsorbent to investigate the adsorption of Cd from contaminated water. The adsorption isotherms of Cd on biochar were determined based on Langmuir equation. The maximum adsorption of Cd at 25°C and pH 7 were 667, 714, and 833 mg/kg for the biochars produced at 350, 450, and 550°C, respectively. On the basis of the physicochemical characteristics of the biochar and the findings from Langmuir equation that showed the biochar produced at 550°C has the highest adsorption capacity for Cd, the desorption/adsorption experiment was carried out using the biochar produced at 550°C. The adsorption of Cd by biochar was directly proportional to the Cd concentrations. It was increased from 0.009 mmol/0.5g at 0.01 mmol Cd to 0.12 mmol/0.5g at 0.2 mmol Cd concentration. The desorption of Cd from biochar was increased proportionally to cadmium concentrations from 0.01 to 0.05 mmol and became constant above 0.05 mmol, regardless of the increment of cadmium concentrations. High retention potential for the cadmium that adsorbed within the biochar was proven in this study with desorption/adsorption percentage of 16%. These findings provide a successful example of date seeds converting into the sustainable adsorbent for Cd removal from aquatic environment to achieve the conception of eco-friendly production, which should be studied further.

Opis:
A batch system investigated the application of two types of chemically modified biosorbents derived from spent grated coconut (Cocos nucifera) powder to adsorb methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The biosorbents were characterised by spectroscopic and quantitative analyses. The assessment of MB adsorption onto the investigated biosorbents was studied at different experimental conditions with different pHs (2–9) and different initial concentrations of MB (10–400 mg/L) at three different temperatures (298, 308, and 318 K). The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of xanthated spent grated coconut (XSGC) was higher than that of hexane-washed spent grated coconut (HSGC). The thermodynamic study indicated that the MB adsorption process was spontaneous for both biosorbents. Desorption of MB-loaded biosorbents was carried out using HCl, NaOH, and Na2EDTA solutions. A desorption ratio of more than 90% was obtained over three adsorption/desorption cycles for HSGC. However, XSGC demonstrated poor MB desorption, implying a stronger MB interaction with XSGC, which could be attributed to H-bonding, Yoshida H-bonding, n-π, and π-π bonding. The study showed that HSGC and XSGC could be applied as biosorbents to remove low MB concentrations from aqueous solutions.

Opis:
Fluorite is an important mineral to produce hydrofluoric acid. As fluorite resources contain calcite as a gangue mineral, the separation between these two calcium containing minerals is difficult. Tannic acid is the most commonly used reagent as a depressant to separate fluorite from calcite by flotation. To enhance this separation, it is so primordial to understand tannic acid physicochemical reactivity via these minerals. Therefore, the aim of this work is to investigate the mechanism of tannic acid adsorption on the fluorite surface by experimental study using isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic. Adsorption isotherm modelling results showed that the adsorption process is well described by Sips model. On the other hand, the kinetic and thermodynamic require firstly the adsorption study as a function of three main reactional parameters including initial tannic acid concentration, solution pH and temperature. This study showed that acidic pH as well as initial tannic acid concentration increase and temperature decrease promote the studied adsorption. These finding were then exploited to determine the adsorption mechanism by pseudo n order kinetic model adjustment to experimental kinetic data using nonlinear regression method. Obtained high correlation coefficient and low mean absolute error at 95 % confidence level showed good agreement of experimental kinetic data with the tested model. These results revealed that the mechanism of tannic acid adsorption onto fluorite was attributed to a chemical reaction. In addition, the thermodynamic study showed that the studied adsorption process was exothermic.

This research focused on using coriander seeds as low cost adsorbent to remove heavy metals ions such as lead, zinc, and nickel from wastewater. Different parameters were studied to obtain the best results, such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, concentration of initial metals and agitation speed. The highest results were obtained at pH 6, 105 min contact time, 1 g/100 ml dosage, 50 mg/l initial concentration of metal ions and 200 rpm agitation speed at temperature 25 ± 2 °C, which were 95.926%, 89.799% and 79.255% for lead, zinc and nickel ions, respectively. The results were also categorized as the Langmuir and Freundlich models, and found that the Freundlich isotherm fit the experimental data better than the Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo-second order was shown to have a high degree of fitness based on kinetic data. The adsorbent was characterized using a variety of techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM).

Opis:
The recycling of untreated dry biosolids, as costless biodegradable adsorbent for the removal of cadmium from aqueous phase was characterized. The adsorption of cadmium was reported to depend on initial pH, adsorbent dose, agitation time, and initial Cd concentration. The results of the batch experiments revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the untreated dry biosolids was 39.22 mg g-1 under optimum operating conditions (i.e. pH: 5, adsorbent dose: 2 g l-1, contact time: 16h). Adsorption reaches equilibrium after 16h, which can be attributed to both external surface adsorption (R2 = 0.86) and intraparticle dif usion (R2 = 0.98). The Langmuir isotherm model best described cadmium adsorption (R2 = 0.99) and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was obeyed, suggesting that the mechanism involved was chemisorption. Biodegradability would make the recovery of adsorbed Cd an environmentally friendly process. Comparing the obtained findings with the related published results, it can be concluded that treating biosolids might be an unnecessary and costly procedure for recycling biosolids as an adsorbent for cadmium.

Bentonite clay was utilized in this research as adsorbent element to remove the lead and copper ions from wastewater. Series of tests were performed at multiple parameters, such as pH solution, initial concentration of lead and copper ions, adsorbent mass, and contact time. The greatest removal was attained at pH 5, adsorbent weight of 0.5 g, initial heavy metal concentration of 10 mg/l, and a contact time of 60 minutes. The results revealed that bentonite clay is suitable in the removal of metal ions from polluted water. The ion exchange rate of lead was faster than that of copper. The isotherm for the adsorption of the lead and copper ions on bentonite clay was confirmed by the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms which offered good consequences. The results indicated that bentonite was utilized as an efficient ion exchange element for the removal of heavy metal ions from polluted water. Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR) images of bentonite clay before and after adsorption showed the imbibition of metal ions by bentonite clay.

This work focuses on the surface modification of fly ash spheroidal particles and their application in phosphorus and chromium(VI) adsorption. The results show that through surface modification, amorphous silica-alumina gels precipitated on the spheroidal particle surface (by which the microsurface area of the reaction products is effectively enlarged) and the surface zeta potential was changed to fit for adsorbing anions. During the adsorption experiment (single and competitive solute systems), chromium(VI) was easier to adsorb. The surface zeta potential and the existence of competitive ions should be recognized as two important factors affecting adsorption efficiency. A higher temperature could improve the adsorption efficiencies of the two solute systems. The fitting results of the pseudo-second-order model (single and competitive solute systems) show better agreement than those of the pseudo-first-order model at every temperature. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation can better simulate the adsorption process in single solute sy039stems, but only the chromium(VI) adsorption process can be fitted by the competitive Langmuir adsorption isotherm in competitive solute systems.

Worldwide, there have been longstanding issues of heavy metal pollution of both ground and surface waters from industrial effluents. In this research, Daniella oliveri leaves were investigated as a precursor for the development of low-cost adsorbent for removing Pb(II) from aqueous media. The adsorbents (biosorbent and ash) were characterised using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Branueur-Emmet-Teller analysis (BET). The biosorbent (DO-B) and ash (DO-A) from Daniella oliveri leaves had a specific surface area of 574.5 m2/g and 723.0 m2/g respectively. Both adsorbents were mesoporous with pore diameter >2 nm. The ash was a better adsorbent for Pb(II) than the biosorbent powder, however, both adsorbents have over 99% removal of Pb(II) at optimal conditions. Best-fit isotherm for DO-B was Freundlich isotherm while no best fit for DO-A was observed. The adsorption for both adsorbents was best fit pseudo-second order kinetic model. Adsorbents from Daniella oliveri leaves could be used as an adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous media and can play an important role in mitigating the potential impact of the release of industrial effluent into the environment.

It was shown that CAC is capable to effectively remove these dyes from a solution. The adsorption increased with higher contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial dye concentration. The data indicated that the adsorption kinetics of dyes on CAC followed a pseudo-second order model. The adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir isotherm model. Evaluation of thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption process is endothermic for all dyes and spontaneous in a single system and became spontaneous in mixture systems at high temperature, expect RBY and RBB in the ternary mixture. Adsorption was higher for RBY, followed by RBB, and was lowest for RBR. The total adsorption efficiency was confirmed by chemical oxygen demand (COD) measurements.

Abstract: Interactions of poly(acrylic acid)s (PAAs) of two different molecular weights (Mw = 9,560 g×$mol^{-1}$ and 4,220 g×$mol^{-1}$) with surfaces of an untreated anatase $TiO_2$ were assessed through adsorption isotherm measurements. Those dispersants were tested under different sodium-calcium neutralization states (molar ratio $r = Ca^{2+}$ / $CO_{2-}$ varying from 0 to 0.35). Their behavior towards the $TiO_2$ surfaces can be described by the Langmuir adsorption model. For both polymers, surface coverage ($Γ_max$) evolves linearly with the molar ratio $r$. For a given r value, a lower surface coverage was observed with the polymer having the highest molecular weight. The free energy of adsorption ($/DeltaG_{ads}$) of PAAs was estimated from adsorption experiment data. This calculation indicates that sorption occurs spontaneously and is unlikely to be of chemical nature. The absolute values of $/DeltaG_{ads}$ are higher for the highest molecular weight polymers suggesting that they are more strongly adsorbed to anatase surfaces. The absolute values of $/DeltaG_{ads}$ per mole of sodium-calcium macromolecules are found to be lower than those calculated for their homologues 100% sodium neutralized suggesting that they are bound with the solid by a fewer number of segments.

In order to minimize fresh water usage, much attention has been paid to the flotation using saline or sea water. However, the effects of various ions in these waters on froth properties in flotation are not fully understood. In this study, the effects of electrolyte solutions containing NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 at different concentrations in the presence of terpenic oil as a frother were investigated on froth performance, dynamic froth stability (DFS). It was found that KCl had the best synergistic effects with terpenic oil in reducing the solution surface tension. In the presence of terpenic oil, the DFS and half-life time were reduced with the increased ion concentration. Dynamics foamability index measurements (DFI) confirmed that the increased ion concentration increased the foamability, as frother did. In addition, Gibbs adsorption isotherm suggested that the amount of terpenic oil adsorbed at the gas-liquid interface was increased with the increased ion concentration. This study therefore indicated that the presence of ions can reduce the froth stability but not decline foamability due to terpenic oil, enlighting the application of saline or sea water in defoaming process in flotation.

A series of activated bio-carbons has been obtained by physical activation of residues after supercritical extraction of blackberries, raspberries and blackcurrants. The effects of different temperatures of activation and different starting materials on the physicochemical and sorption properties of the bio-carbon samples obtained were evaluated. The physicochemical properties of the activated bio-carbons were characterized by elementary analysis, low-temperature nitrogen sorption and Boehm titration. All materials were tested as adsorbents of pollutants from gas (nitrogen dioxide) and liquid (iodine, methylene blue) phase. The sorption properties of the activated bio-carbons were tested at 23°C. The materials obtained were activated bio-carbons of surface area ranging between 303 and 442 m2/g and showing basic character of the surface. The content of elemental carbon in the obtained samples was in the range of 73.4-82.1 wt. %. The maximum adsorption capacities of the materials towards nitrogen dioxide were 65 mg/g, methylene blue -207 mg/g, and iodine 1001 mg/g. According to the adsorption tests towards nitrogen dioxide, the sorption capacities of the adsorbents studied were increased if a mixture of nitrogen dioxide and air had a humidity of 70 %. The mechanism of methylene blue adsorption involved the formation of adsorptive multilayer. The most effective adsorbent of organic and inorganic pollutants proved to be the activated bio-carbon obtained from the residues after supercritical extraction of blackcurrants.

In this work, low rank coal was used for the removal of nonylphenol ethoxylate with fifteen ethylene oxide groups (NPEO15) from aqueous solutions at different contact times, temperatures, and initial adsorbent concentrations. The adsorption isotherms showed good fit with the Langmuir equation. Maximum adsorption capacities calculated at 308, 318, and 328 K were 23.64, 29.41, and 35.71 mg g–1, respectively. The changes in the free energy of adsorption (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°), and entropy (ΔS°) were calculated in order to predict the nature of adsorption. The results of the thermodynamic analysis indicated that a spontaneous process took place, driven synergistically by both enthalpy and entropy. The adsorption kinetics of NPEO15 were consistent with a pseudo-second order reaction model. XPS results showed that the oxygen functional groups on the low rank coal surface were significantly covered by NPEO15. Furthermore, while the content of C–C/C–H functional groups increased significantly, that of C–O functional groups decreased after absorption. These results clearly indicate that low rank coal is more hydrophobic and displays better floatability.

Opis:
The efficiency of oil extract of Balanites aegyptiaca seeds on the inhibition of mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl has been investigated using gravimetric and electrochemical (Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)) techniques. Results obtained show that Balanites aegyptiaca (BA) oil extract inhibited the acid corrosion of mild steel. Polarization technique showed that BA oil extract acted as mixed-type inhibitor in 1 M HCl solution. The impedance technique reveals that charge-transfer process controls the corrosion of mild steel. The inhibiting action of BA oil extract was attributed to their adsorption on the mild steel surface and the formation of dense protective layer which increased by increasing their concentration. BA inhibits the corrosion of mild steel by an adsorption mechanism, which follows Temkin adsorption isotherm. Physical adsorption mechanism has been proposed for the inhibitory action of BA oil extract. The protective film formed on the surface was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
