Opis:
The objective of this work is to evaluate the removal of methylene blue dye by bio-polishing sludge-based adsorbents. The adsorbents were characterized according to the specific surface area, pH upon the treatment and surface functional groups. The adsorption of dye was carried out at room temperature, and the adsorption data were analyzed using the isotherm and kinetics models. The bio-polishing sludge is rich in ash content, and the presence of surface functional groups varied with the treatment strategies. The specific surface area of adsorbents is between 7.25 and 20.8 m2 /g. Results show that the maximum removal of methylene blue by sludge adsorbents was observed to have the following order: untreated sludge (SR) > zinc chloride-treated (SZ) > microwave-dried (SW) = potassium carbonate-treated (SK) > acid-washed (SH). The maximum adsorption capacities for SR and SZ as predicted by the Langmuir model are 170 and 135 mg/g, respectively. Although SR demonstrates a higher maximum removal than SZ, the latter exhibits greater removal intensity and rate constant even at high dye concentration. The bio-polishing sludge is a promising adsorbent for dye wastewater treatment.

Opis:
Initial research has been carried out to determine the potential of SBE as an adsorbent material through chemical and surface area characterization. Several analyses were performed, including oil content, BET, SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR, and adsorption capacity. The oil content of the SBE samples were 0.05–0.09%, well below the standard (3%) of hazardous material classification according to the Indonesian government regulation. The chemical composition of SBE, measured by EDS, was dominated by Si and Al elements. XRD analysis revealed two 2-theta diffraction peaks indicated the presence of crystalline SiO2 and Al2O3 phases. Additionally, the results of the FTIR test also showed the dominance of Si-O and Al-O-H functional groups. The SBE morphology, as observed in SEM image, exhibited irregular shape and porous surface covered by impurities. These results supported by the BET data which showed SBE surface area of 10.86 m2g-1 and a mesopore volume of 2.49 cm3 (STP)g-1. Batch adsorption study conducted using low and high range concentration of methylene blue produced a maximum adsorption capacity of 7.993 mg/g and 40.485 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption isotherm analysis showed that the adsorption mechanism was in accordance with the Langmuir isotherm model. Considering its chemical characteristic, SBE has met the criteria for adsorbent material. Nevertheless, the small surface area requires SBE to be activated prior to use.

Opis:
The knowledge of the properties and a surface structure of catalysts and adsorbents is of great importance in the selection of these materials to the relevant objectives. Interesting structural information can be obtained in many ways, for example: with the use of spectroscopic or microscopic techniques or in direct examination of the adsorption isotherms. This article focuses on these last-mentioned methods, which can be a source of information on energy heterogeneity of the catalyst or adsorbent surface. Heterogeneity is usually determined by measuring adsorption isotherms of a selected adsorbate on the examined adsorbent, which is dependent of adsorbate coverage on the adsorbent relative to the equilibrium pressure under isothermal conditions. Among the many mathematical models describing this relationship particularly interesting is the adsorption isotherm model described by generalized integral Fredholm equation. The solution of this equation is density function with the assumed local isotherm model. There are different ways to solve the Fredholm equation, depending on measurement methods of obtained adsorption isotherms. For example, an application of static techniques (gravimetric or volumetric) needs to use advanced, sophisticated numerical methods for directly solving integral equations, other techniques (e.g. such as calorimetric or chromatographic) provide specific values that simplify these calculations. The resulting energy density function allows to observe active centers as peaks or inflections of the curve on the energy spectrum graph.

Opis:
In Turkey, the commercial laundry wastewater is usually discharged to the receiving water bodies and its reuse potential is ignored. This wastewater is grouped into the greywater due to their content of organic and inorganic pollutants. In recent years, the sequential processes have become more preferable in greywater treatment and reuse. In this study, a batch adsorption process was applied for further treatment of commercial laundry wastewater which is also pre-treated by means of the electrocoagulation process. In adsorption, two different composites of waste hazelnut shell derived activated carbons, which are supported with polyaniline (PAn/HS) and polypyrrole (PPy/HS), were used as adsorbents. The efficiency of the process was evaluated by means of an experimental design, and the response surface methodology was applied for this purpose. In the experiment with PAn/HS, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) 75% removal efficiency was accomplished with adsorbent dosage of 0.9 g, at pH 8, with 125 rpm mixing rate and for 77.5 min reaction time. For PPy/HS under the same experimental conditions, the COD removal efficiency was obtained as 20%. The utilization of waste hazelnut shell derived composites as adsorbents for commercial laundry wastewater treatment is a good alternative. The production costs of adsorbents were estimated as 0.70 USD/g and 3.21 USD/g for PAn/HS and PPy/HS, respectively. In terms of the production cost, the PAn/HS composite is approved more agreeable as adsorbents for commercial laundry wastewater treatment.

Opis:
Adsorption is an effective wastewater treatment technique which has been widely used in various industrial applications. However, the high operation cost involving commercial activated carbon in industrial processes is the main drawback. Sewage sludge is an auspicious precursor of activated carbon owing to its high carbon content, rich functional groups, low cost, high availability and abundance. This research was aimed to establish the feasibility of converting yarn processing sludge into activated carbon by KI + KOH activation and char at 700 °C for 1 h. The effect of preparation strategies on the properties of sludge-based adsorbents (SBA) was reviewed. The applications of SBAs in the removal of dyes and model pollutants were discussed. The results from this study proved that the preparation of yarn processing sludge-based activated carbon via KI + KOH activation is feasible and effective in the adsorption of dye. This paper provides further insight on the preparation methods of sludge-based adsorbents and dye wastewater treatment using these adsorbents.

Experimental results are presented on the adsorption equilibria of oxygen over zeolite molecular sieves 13X which may be used in the separation of CO2 from flue gas streams. It is found that oxygen is the weakest adsorbing species among the main components of a dry flue gas. It is also concluded that, over a range of pressures between 0 and 1 bar, the selectivities are very high. Of the two adsorbents studied ZMS 13X Grace has clearly better separation properties for mixtures of N2, O2 and CO2 than its Molsiv counterpart.

Badano skuteczność adsorpcyjnego usuwania związków arsenu(III) i (V) z modelowych roztworów wodnych na granulowanym wodorotlenku żelaza (CFH-12). Badania zrealizowano w układzie porcjowym i przepływowym w skali laboratoryjnej. Maksymalna pojemność adsorpcyjna materiału CFH-12 względem As(III) i As(V), obliczona na postawie równania izotermy Langmuira, wynosiła odpowiednio 43,75 mg/g i 44,04 mg/g. Do opisu kinetyki adsorpcji anionowych form arsenu w badanym układzie wykorzystano równanie kinetyczne pseudo I i pseudo II rzędu. Zaobserwowano podobny przebieg kinetyki usuwania As(III) i As(V), polegający na szybkiej adsorpcji jonów w fazie początkowej, a następnie stopniowym spowolnieniu procesu. Badania zrealizowane w układzie przepływowym potwierdziły dużą wydajność i stabilność adsorbentu CFH-12 podczas usuwania związków arsenu.
Efficacy of arsenic(III) and (V) adsorptive removal from aqueous model solutions on the granular ferric hydroxide (CFH-12) was analyzed. Batch adsorption and fixed bed column experiments were performed on the laboratory scale. Maximum adsorption capacity of CFH-12 for As(III) and As(V) calculated by the Langmuir equation amounted to 43.75 mg/g and 44.04 mg/g, respectively. Pseudo-first and pseudo-second order equation was employed to description of adsorption kinetics of anionic arsenic species. A similar adsorption kinetics behavior of As(III) and As(V) was observed, relying on a quick ion adsorption in the initial phase, followed by a gradual process slowdown. The adsorption test results under dynamic conditions demonstrated high adsorbent efficacy and stability over a long period of time. The arsenic concentration in the effluent remained below the accepted threshold of 10 μg/dm3 during the column operation time corresponding to 15 thousand bed volumes. Hence, application of granular hydroxide to adsorptive treatment of arsenic contaminated water and wastewater from mine industry should be regarded as a robust and effective solution.

The effective capture of harmful gases and clean energy sources are of great importance for protection of the environment. In this regard, it is possible to take advantage of the MOF-graphene composites to develop new technologies for environmental and energy-related applications. These composites attract a great attention around the world due to their higher adsorption affinity toward CO2, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), H2 and CH4 reported in comparison to the parent MOFs. Integration of MOFs with graphene nanosheets can be a very effective strategy not only to improve their adsorption performance but also to generate new chemical and physical properties that are not present in MOFs alone. In this review we present the progress in the field of gas capture/storage using MOF-graphene composites with special attention on the correlation between composition, structure and adsorption properties.

This article focuses on discussing the adsorption process of phenol and its chloro-derivatives on the HDTMA-modified halloysite. Optimized chemical structures of phenol, 2-, 3-, 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichloro-, and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol were obtained with computational calculation (the Scigress program). Charge distributions and the hypothetical structure of the system HDTMA-modified halloysite are among their key features. The above-mentioned calculations are applied in order to explain adsorption mechanism details of chlorophenols on the HDTMA-modified halloysite in aqueous solutions. The results of electron density distribution and solvent accessible surface area calculations for phenol and chlorophenols molecules illustrate the impact of chlorine substitution position in a phenol molecule, both on the mechanism and the kinetics of their adsorption in aqueous solutions. Experimental adsorption data were sufficiently represented using the Langmuir multi-center adsorption model for all adsorbates. In addition, the relations between adsorption isotherm parameters and the adsorbate properties were discussed. This study also targets at explaining the role of meta position as a chlorine substituent for mono-chloro derivatives. Given the above findings, two possible mechanisms were utilized as regards chlorophenol adsorption on the HDTMA-modified halloysite, i.e., electrostatic and partition interactions when the chlorophenols exist in a molecular form.

We attempt to prepare a heavy metal adsorbent from palm shell with a simple-two step process using pyrolysis and sulfur impregnation. Palm shell was pyrolyzed with three different methods; rapid pyrolysis, slow pyrolysis, and KOH pyrolysis, and the prepared char with high specific surface area was sulfurized with H2S impregnation to obtain the sulfur-impregnated char with the adsorption ability of heavy metals. The pyrolysis char with high specific surface area can be obtained by KOH pyrolysis, which was pre-treated with KOH solution before slow pyrolysis, and can added sulfur into KOH pyrolysis char using H2S gas. The sulfur content of sulfur-impregnated char increased with increasing the time of H2S treatment, and increased the adsorption amount of Pb2+ from aqueous solution. The sulfur impregnated char was more effective for Pb2+ and Zn2+ adsorption than commercial charcoal.

Nature has a remarkable strategies to overcome the unfavoring environmental condition by producing a unique chemical compounds, including polyphenol. Polyphenol residues in many living organism have been documented to express numerous biological function ranging from antioxidant, mechanical reinforcement as well as metal anchoring substances. This gave us insight of how nature converts toxic metal compound and deposits it into a harmless form. This review will discuss some natural strategies of living organism to metabolize metal in a safe manner so that the metal no longer harmful to them. Example taken from aluminum accumulating plants, vanadium accumulating marine tunicate and iron-reinforced mussel byssus, which all three utilized phenol derivative compound to chelate the metal. Advances made by incorporating cutting edge characterization tools allowed us to understand the exact mechanism of metal chelation at the atomic level. A comprehensive discussion of molecular mechanism governing the complexion between the phenolic compound and metal will be beneficial for further study to fabricate functional materials, for example adsorbent, to remediate contaminated water. Translating these natural strategies into an engineered polyphenol based adsorbent materials will be prospective to be further applied as a remediation agent as it is easily found in nature, cost effective and highly efficient.
