Opis:
In spite of various clues pointing to the fact that Andrea Gabrieli’s fame had reached Milan during his lifetime, his name appears very rarely in studies on music in Milan between the end of the 16th century and the start of the 17th. This article follows up these clues and reflects on some aspects of the transmission and reception of Andrea Gabrieli’s music in Milan, taking into consideration firstly the reprinting in Milan of some of his collections and the presence of his compositions in local music publications (such as Orfeo Vecchi’s second book of 5-voice motets), and then examining how his madrigals are treated in the collections of contrafacta by Aquilino Coppini and Geronimo Cavaglieri published or assembled in Milan. Lastly, it addresses some aspects of the active and creative reception of his music, illustrating the characteristics of some compositions from the musical environment in Milan that reveal the assimilation of technical-stylistic features that can be traced to Gabrieli’s output.

Opis:
After World War II, within the boundaries of Poland there remained 650–700 thousand of Ukrainians. Relocations on the power of the Agreement on exchange of population of 9 September 1944 involved approximately 480 thousand people of Ukrainian origin. In 1946, on the territory of the south-east Poland, the Ukrainian community was about 200 thousand people, out of whom more than 140 thousand were relocated to the areas of western and northern Poland, as a part of the „Vistula” campaign. Ethnic policy of the Polish authorities caused total disruption in social structures of the Ukrainian minority. Relocations carried out in 1947, as a part of the „Vistula” campaign, resulted in an intended and deliberate dispersion of the Ukrainian population throughout a great territory of western and northern Poland. On the power of edict of the government of 27 August 1949, the Ukrainian population was deprived of ownership of farms, from which they were relocated and by edict of 28 September 1949 the Treasury took over properties of the Greek Catholic Church and Ukrainian institutions and organizations. The policy of au-thorities that was aimed at cultural homogenization of the population living on the territory of Poland, actively prevented the Ukrainian community national-cultural revival.

Opis:
What happens when people of different cultures, values, religion live together? Sociological studies on immigrative phenomenon often swing between immigration and integration policies. These policies actually reveal the difficulty of the host society to institutionalize new models of social differences accompanying multiculturalism. Immigrants who “arrive” continue their life in a place where they do not passively participate in the passing of time, but become actors. Pressed by the hegemonic culture of the host society to adapt, do not cease to practice their religious and origin cultural expressions, often in conditions of urban spatial and social marginalization, they resist assimilation with ethnic persistence strategies. Considering the impact of religion and origin cultural values on expression of differences, it is important to consider their role in the integration process. And, above all-facilitate or hinder integration? These dynamics have been analyzed in a research study on immigrants’ integration process in Palermo. The main results are presented in this paper. In this case study, the research’s data hypothesizes a theoretical model of integration in which immigrants, free to express their religious and cultural differences, tend to reduce their perception of minority

Opis:
The article analyzes the discourse in social sciences on the process of adaptation of migrants to a host society. The discourse is based on „integration theories”. Such an approach creates some difficulties and drawbacks. Therefore, an alternative approach grounded in empirical data on Chechen refugees in Poland is presented. The model is based on the concept of „adaptive strategies”. A „strategy” stresses human agency over structural pressures. The adaptive strategies of the Chechens in Poland are expressed in two contexts, i.e. a host society, explained by „new assimilation theories,” and transnational space. The strategies are applied in the process of reconstructing everyday life and while entering the social structures of the host society. The Chechens in Poland reconstruct their everyday life following patterns acquired in Chechnya. What is more, they use modern technologies to reproduce Chechen culture in Poland. Since the assistance offered by the Polish governmental and nongovernmental institutions to refugees and asylum seekers is insufficient, it often happens that the Chechens in Poland can receive support only from members of their own community in Poland. Owing to that support they are able to survive and adapt to the new environment.

Opis:
The article discusses the most significant extralinguistic factors which have an influence on the formation of oiconyms of the Polish-Belarusian borderline. The most crucial ones include historical, cultural and linguistic processes. The most important changes were brought about along with the colonisation and settlement in that area. Historical and political processes, which had a particularly strong impact on the culture and economy of the researched area, determined the emergence of new phenomena and concepts, which was reflected in various oiconyms. Another source of a considerable influence on the form, pronunciation and meaning of modern oiconyms was the language policy connected with processes of assimilation and adaptation of names in the researched area.

Opis:
Migration flows force their participants to intentionally define themselves as members of a society with a particular national identity. Before these issues can be investigated, it is crucial to clarify the difference between an ethnic group and a national group. This is not as easy a task as it might seem. The authors of this paper have carried out a theoretical analysis of key terms defining changes within a population brought about by migration processes. The study will focus on terms which are crucial for this process – assimilation, acculturation and adaptation. For the purposes of this publication, the authors define these terms as reflecting the natural processes which inevitably, though with various pace and intensity, take place in immigrant communities, including Polish expat communities across the world.

Opis:
In the years of 1863-1867, around 25 200 Poles were exiled to European Russia, to Caucasus, and Siberia. The majority of Poles were exiled to the Yenisey Guberniya after the January Uprising. Until 1863, 80-90% of political exiles belonged to higher and enlightened social spheres; one can say that they were the elite of the Polish nation. After 1863, the composition of the exiles was different: many simple people fought in the insurgent groups. Under new conditions in exile, the representatives of the lower social spheres most often married the local inhabitants because they could rely on some help from their wives’ families, could make their homestead stable, and establish a permanent foundation for their life in Siberia. Most certainly more exiled Poles would have married and stayed in Siberia, had there been no amnesty. Not all the Poles, however, took advantage of this amnesty. After their return to their homeland they often complained that they could find no compassion on the part of society, were treated with indifference, and the great merits of the Poles in Siberia were neglected. Those Poles who stayed in Siberia after the amnesty, had contributed to the development of Siberia at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Polish intelligentsia in the Yenisey Guberniya deserve our special attention: first and foremost they worked in education and brought medical assistance to the local people. Ancestors of the January Uprising exiles have been establishing Polonia cultural and national associations since the 1990s.
