Opis:
In the paper a new look at adaptation in active noise control (ANC) systems is presented. The adaptation is interpreted as a nonlinear feedback. This nonlinearity could be manifested in behaviour of ANC systems with occurence of complex periodic and chaoti time-domain responses. Results of real world experiments with adaptive ANC systems used to create a local zone of quiet in a laboratory enclosure showing apparently this behaviour are included.
Zamieszczono przykłady takich odpowiedzi w wyniku doświadczeń laboratoryjnych, w których układy ATH wykorzystywano do tworzenia lokalnych przestrzennych stref ciszy w pomieszczeniu zamkniętym.

Opis:
M-estimators are widely used in active noise control (ANC) systems in order to update the adaptive FIR filter taps. ANC systems reduce the noise level by generating anti-noise signals. Up to now, the evaluation of M-estimators capabilities has shown that there exists a need for further improvements in this area. In this paper, a new improved M-estimator is proposed. The sensitivity of the proposed algorithm to the variations of its constant parameter is checked in feedforward control. The effectiveness of the algorithm in both types is proved by comparing it with previous studies. Simulation results show the steady performance and fast initial convergence of the proposed algorithm.

Opis:
The paper presents a method of eliminating the tonal component of an acoustic signal. The tonal component is approximated by a sinusoidal signal of a given amplitude and frequency. As the parameters of this component: amplitude, frequency and initial phase may be variable, it is important to detect these parameters in subsequent analysis time intervals (frames). If the detection of the parameters is correct, the elimination consists in adding a sinusoidal component with the detected amplitude and frequency to the signal, but the phase shifted by 180 degrees. The accuracy of the reduction depends on the accuracy of parameters detection and their changes. Detection takes place using the Discrete Fourier Transform, whose length is changed to match the spectrum resolution to the signal frequency. The operation for various methods of synthesis of the compensating signal as well as various window functions were checked. An elimination simulation was performed to analyze the effectiveness of the reduction. The result of the paper is the assessment of the method in narrowband active noise control systems. The method was tested by simulation and then experimentally with real acoustic signals. The level of reduction was from 6.9 to 31.5 dB.

The development of digital signal processors and the increase in their computing capabilities bring opportunities to employ algorithms with multiple variable parameters in active noise control systems. Of particular interest are the algorithms based on artificial neural networks. This paper presents an active noise control algorithm based on a neural network and a nonlinear input-output system identification model. The purpose of the algorithm is an active noise control system with a nonlinear primary path. The algorithm uses the NARMAX system identification model. The neural network employed in the proposed algorithm is a multilayer perceptron. The error backpropagation rule with adaptive learning rate is employed to update the weight of the neural network. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been tested by numerical simulations. Results for narrow-band input signals and nonlinear primary path are presented below.

For many adaptive noise control systems the Filtered-Reference LMS, known as the FXLMS algorithm is used to update parameters of the control filter. Appropriate adjustment of the step size is then important to guarantee convergence of the algorithm, obtain small excess mean square error, and react with required rate to variation of plant properties or noise nonstationarity. There are several recipes presented in the literature, theoretically derived or of heuristic origin. This paper focuses on a modification of the FXLMS algorithm, were convergence is guaranteed by changing sign of the algorithm steps size, instead of using a model of the secondary path. A Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy inference system is proposed to evaluate both the sign and the magnitude of the step size. Simulation experiments are presented to validate the algorithm and compare it to the classical FXLMS algorithm in terms of convergence and noise reduction.

Vibrating plates can be used in Active Noise Control (ANC) applications as active barriers or as secondary sources replacing classical loudspeakers. The system with vibrating plates, especially when nonlinear MFC actuators are used, is nonlinear. The nonlinearity in the system reduces performance of classical feedforward ANC with linear control filters systems, because they cannot cope with harmonics generated by the nonlinearity. The performance of the ANC system can be improved by using nonlinear control filters, such as Artificial Neural Networks or Volterra filters. However, when multiple actuators are mounted on a single plate, which is a common practice to provide effective control of more vibration modes, each actuator should be driven by a dedicated nonlinear control filter. This significantly increases computational complexity of the control algorithm, because adaptation of nonlinear control filters is much more computationally demanding than adaptation of linear FIR filters. This paper presents an ANC system with multiple actuators, which are driven with a single nonlinear filter. To avoid destructive interference of vibrations generated by different actuators the control signal is filtered by appropriate separate linear filters. The control system is experimentally verified and obtained results are reported.

Opis:
Vibrating plates have been recently used for a number of active noise control applications. They are resistant to difficult environmental conditions including dust, humidity, and even precipitation. However, their properties significantly depend on temperature. The plate temperature changes, caused by ambient temperature changes or plate heating due to internal friction, result in varying response of the plate, and may make it significantly different than response of a fixed model. Such mismatch may deteriorate performance of an active noise control system or even lead to divergence of a model-based adaptation algorithm. In this paper effects of vibrating plate temperature variation on a feedforward adaptive active noise reduction system with the multichannel Filtered-reference LMS algorithm are examined. For that purpose, a thin aluminum plate is excited with multiple Macro-Fiber Composite actuators. The plate temperature is forced by a set of Peltier cells, what allows for both cooling and heating the plate. The noise is generated at one side of the plate, and a major part of it is transmitted through the plate. The goal of the control system is to reduce sound pressure level at a specified area on the other side of the plate. To guarantee successful operation of the control system in face of plate temperature variation, a gain-scheduling scheme is proposed to support the Filteredreference LMS algorithm.

The paper summarizes the novel research on a special class of digital sound processing systems with time varying sound sensor position, conducted in the Institute of Automatic Control, Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland. These are adaptive active noise control (ANC) systems creating zones of quiet around a microphone, position of which is being changed in enclosure. They use the LMS-based adaptive control algorithm which is parameterized with a model of the so called secondary path. The problem arises when the microphone position is changed during the ANC system operation, because the secondary path modelling errors occur . They, in some cases, can be coped by the adaptive control algorithm itself, however, in other cases an additional, on-line identification routine has to be used to update the secondary path model. These two situations are the subject of the presented research. The results of real world experiments showed that the zone of quiet can adaptively track the movement of the microphone if the LMS-based adaptive control algorithm is applied. However, if the noise is random and the spatial range of the microphone movement is wider, then the more complex algorithms have to be used, which is shown on the basis of simulation experiments, verified in the ANC laboratory.

Opis:
There are many industrial environments which are exposed to a high-level noise, sometimes much higher than the level of speech. Verbal communication is then practically unfeasible. In order to increase the speech intelligibility, appropriate speech enhancement algorithms can be used. It is impossible to filter off the noise completely from the acquired signal by using a conventional filter, because of two reasons. First, the speech and the noise frequency contents are overlapping. Second, the noise properties are subject to change. The adaptive realisation of the Wienerbased approach can be, however, applied. Two structures are possible. One is the line enhancer, where the predictive realisation of the Wiener approach is used. The benefit of using this structure it that it does not require additional apparatus. The second structure takes advantage of the high level of noise. Under such condition, placing another microphone, even close to the primary one, can provide a reference signal well correlated with the noise disturbing the speech and lacking the information about the speech. Then, the classical Wiener filter can be used, to produce an estimate of the noise based on the reference signal. That noise estimate can be then subtracted from the disturbed speech. Both algorithms are verified, based on the data obtained from the real industrial environment. For laboratory experiments the G.R.A.S. artificial head and two microphones, one at back side of an earplug and another at the mouth are used.

In this article a system for active noise reduction in industrial cabins is presented. Three different approaches for secondary source design and location are described. The first one is a traditional configuration of two loudspeakers located in the corners of a cabin to create quiet zones. The second approach is an active hearing protector built on the base of lightweight headphones. The third one is a kind of an active headrest (two small loudspeakers located just behind the operator’s chair). In the article the results of the measurements of the efficiency of active noise reduction for each approach are presented and discussed.

The aim of this paper is to analyse various types of signals defined as tonal where energy is concentrated in a narrow band of the spectrum. Not all tonal noises could be reduced using narrowband active noise control systems with cancelling signal generated based on source parameters. The author proposes the following classes of tonality: periodical (e.g. sinusoidal) signals, sinusoidal signals modulated by random function, sinusoidal signals with increased/decreasing amplitude and/or frequency, a combination of the two previous ones, and narrowband noises. For each type of the analysed signals active elimination of the tonal component using synthesized cancelling signal was carried out. Depending on the type of the signals different results were obtained which indicates the need to clarify the definition of a tonal signal, or use not one concept of a tonal signal, but several classes discussed above.

On the railroads in seismically active regions, the impact of frequent weak earthquakes accelerates the initiation of defects such as wear and tear, cracks and deformation due to fatigue. An analysis of the types and stages of initiation and development of defects preceding accidents at technical facilities has shown that the registration of the beginning of the latent period of transition of objects to an emergency state based on the results of traditional technologies of analysis of measurement information in the applied control systems in the field of railway transport is delayed owing to the difficulties of noise analysis. The proposed algorithms and noise analysis technologies allow forming corresponding sets of informative attributes to control the beginning of the latent period of accidents. Their use in intelligent noise control systems will improve the safety of this mode of transportation. To this end, it is expedient to create a subsystem for noise seismic hazard warning, i.e., a subsystem for noise control of the onset of the initiation and dynamics of development of changes in the technical condition of the rolling stock, railroad tracks, bridges, tunnels, and other railroad infrastructure facilities.

Opis:
Passive noise reduction means are commonly used to reduce noise in the industry but, unfortunately, their effectiveness is poor in the low frequency range. By applying active structural acoustic control to the enclosure walls significant improvement of the insulating properties in this frequency range can be achieved. In this paper a model of double panel structure with ASAC is presented. The structure consists of two aluminium plates separated by an air gap. Two inertial magnetoelectric actuators and two piezoceramic MFC sensors were used for controlling the structure. A multichannel FxLMS algorithm with virtual error microphone technique is used as a control algorithm. The signal of a virtual error microphone is extrapolated basing on signals from MFC sensors. Performance of this actively controlled structure for tonal signals at selected frequencies is presented in the article. During the study, a double panel structure was mounted on one wall of sound insulating enclosure located in an acoustic chamber. During the measurements local and global reduction of noise test signal was investigated.
