Opis:
Acoustic information, collected in the form of calibrated measurements of integrated echo energies, has been applied at the Sea Fisheries Institute since 1981 to examine the relationships between clupeoids distribution in the Baltic and the relevant environmental factors. Data were collected during different seasons for each elementary distance unit (EDSU) at standardised depth intervals and compared to the values of selected environmental parameters measured in parallel. Acoustic, biological and hydrological data were correlated temporally and spatially, then transferred to a comprehensive database, thereby enabling the 4D analysis of the factors characterising a wide range of fish behaviour. Selected characteristics describe the variability of environmental factors during the short- and long-term life cycles of clupeoids. Apart from the analysis of abiotic factors, specially prepared cross-sections of the herring in different stages of gonad maturity are presented. The aspects of variability have been described for their inclusion in the measuring and modelling herring and sprat target strength, particularly under the specific circumstances of the Baltic Sea.

Opis:
The effects of additional cavities and air-gaps in the acoustic response of a passenger vehicle are investigated. It is observed that the cabin cavity and the trunk cavity of the passenger vehicle are connected through an aperture in the rear seat. In the trunk cavity of the vehicle, there are two more air-gaps which are designed as countermeasures to trunk lid slam noise. It is established that acoustic modes and acoustic eigenfrequencies of the vehicle are altered through the trunk cavity and its air-gaps. To develop an analytical solution, the actual acoustic cavity is simplified into a rectangular shape. In the analytical solution, the coupling of trunk and cabin cavities is considered. It is shown that the computational analysis results match well with the results of the analytical solution proposed. Further, the resonator effect of air-gaps present in the trunk cavity is examined.

The catacombs are underground places. This paper reports the results of acoustic measurements carried out inside the catacombs of “San Gennaro” (Naples) and in those one of “San Callisto” (Rome). Originally the catacombs were also used to perform sacred functions, although we don’t know the type of these functions i.e. if they were spoken, sung or performed as psalms. This paper presents acoustic measurements carried out in catacombs using the impulse response method, and by the analysis of the monaural acoustic parameters, (T30, EDT, C80, D50 and STI), the authors intend to understand the type of religious ceremony performed in the catacombs. If the catacombs had been reverberant places, they could not have been used for prayers because the echoes would have created difficulties in concentration and meditation for the devotees due to the poor speech comprehension.

In a television, obtaining a good acoustic response is a challenging issue because of slim mechanical structures. The area dedicated for speaker’s placement is limited and inadequate space inside the cabinet of a TV prevents possible solutions to increase the sound performance. In addition, frame of the TV’s is getting narrower as the customers searching for the highest screen to body ratio. These designing aspects restrain optimal speaker positioning to achieve good sound performance. In this paper, an analysis related to speaker’s placement and mounting angle is proposed. A rotation setup compatible with a TV was prepared to measure different facing position of the speaker. This paper proposes the analysis of speaker’s rotation and facing direction in a flat panel television and its effects on sound pressure level together with deviation of the acoustic response. Measurement results are analyzed with an audio analyzer together with a statistics tool to achieve precise results.

Background: The aim was to present the methodology and interpretation of intraoperative hearing monitoring with simultaneous Transtympanic Electrocochleography (TT-ECochG) and direct Cochlear Nerve Action Potential (CNAP) measurements during vestibular schwannoma removal. Materials and Methods: Detailed methodology of measurements and interpretation of results are presented in three exemplary patients who underwent tumor removal via middle fossa approach (MFA) with the use of intraoperative monitoring of hearing with TT-ECochG and direct CNAP performed in real time. In addition, all responses were automatically recorded and stored along with surgical information and subjected to detailed analyses and calculation after surgery. Results: The following changes in TT-ECochG and direct CNAP responses were observed: Patient #1 – TT-ECochG and CNAP responses with minor, but transient, morphology changes (hearing was preserved); Patient #2 – CNAP responses changed significantly but, temporarily, from triphasic into biphasic responses later, with marked but partially reversible desynchronization of CNAP; changes in TT-ECochG responses were also observed but, at the end, returned to baseline (surgery-related deterioration of hearing); Patient #3 – irreversible changes of TT-ECochG and direct CNAP (complete loss of hearing). Conclusions: A combination of TT-ECochG and direct CNAP allows for real-time monitoring of auditory function during vestibular schwannoma resection and surgical manipulation which contribute to the risk of hearing loss. Therefore, the surgeon can be instantly informed about changes which could increase the possibility of preserving the patient’s hearing

Opis:
The achievement of efficient data transmissions via underwater acoustic channels, while dealing with large data packets and real-time data fed by underwater sensors, requires a high data rate. However, diffraction, refraction, and reflection phenomena, as well as phase and amplitude variations, are common problems experienced in underwater acoustic (UWA) channels. These factors make it difficult to achieve high-speed and long-range underwater acoustic communications. Due to multipath interference caused by surface and ocean floor reflections, the process of modeling acoustic channels under the water’s surface is of key importance. This work proposes a simple geometry-based channel model for underwater communication. The impact that varying numbers of reflections, low water depth values, and distances between the transmitter and the receiver exert on channel impulse response and transmission loss is examined. The high degree of similarity between numerical simulations and actual results demonstrates that the proposed model is suitable for describing shallow underwater acoustic communication environments.

Opis:
Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices like delay lines, filters, resonators etc., are nowadays extensively used as principal solid state components in many electronic applications and chemical vapour sensors. To bring out the best from these SAW devices, computational design and modelling are resorted too. The present paper proposes the modelling of 400 MHz ST-X Quartz based SAW delay line, by three models namely, Impulse Response Model (IRM), Crossed-field Equivalent Circuit Model (ECM) and Coupling-of-Modes (COM) model. MATLAB® is employed as a computational tool to model the experimental output of the SAW device. A comparative discussion of the modelled device results is also provided.

Opis:
The paper presents the method of assessment of the technical condition of the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer of an F-16 Block C aircraft made from composite materials. The described method was an experimental measurement of the acoustic pressures generated by the technically operational element and the element with the distorted structural continuity and then a comparison of these pressures in the curves of time and frequency in order to assess how the damage impacts the parameters of the acoustic wave. The test was performed in a dual-channel system, the pressure was induced through impacts on the investigated element with an impact hammer and then, based on the measured induction parameters and the generated acoustic wave, the function of frequency response was calculated, based on which the authors assessed how the structural damage influenced the curve characteristics of the acoustic pressure in the domain of frequency. The described method may be used as an efficient method of non-destructive diagnostics of the airframe elements of an aircraft.
