Powszechnie stosowaną metodą intensyfikacji wydobycia węglowodorów jest kwasowanie odwiertów. Kwasowanie wiąże się z korozją rur wydobywczych i eksploatacyjnych. Celem badań było określenie skuteczności czterech inhibitorów korozji: ACI 130A, AI 600, Antykor PP, SAFE-COR stosowanych w przemyśle oraz Inhibitora PPT powstałego na Wydziale Wiertnictwa, Nafty i Gazu AGH. Badania przeprowadzono w temperaturze 20 stopni Celsjusza i 60 stopni Celsjusza na próbkach stali w pięciu odmianach wytrzymałościowych (według nomenklatury API oznaczonych jako J-55, K-55, L-80, N-80 oraz P-110). Wytypowano najbardziej skuteczne inhibitory korozji oraz najbardziej odporne odmian stali jako materiału wykorzystywanego w rurach wydobywczych i eksploatacyjnych.
The most commonly used method in intensification of hydrocarbon production is acid treatment. It is connected with corrosion of production pipes. The aim of the research was to determine effectiveness of four corrosion inhibitors: ACI 130A, AI 600, Antykor PP, SAFE-COR which are used in the industry and Inhibitor PPT which was created on the Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas, at the AGH University of Science and Technology. The research was conducted on temperature of 20 degrees of Celsius (293.15 K) and 60 degrees of Celsius (333.15 K) on five samples of different types of steel strength (according to nomenclature API: J-55, K-55, L-80, N-80 and P-110). The most effective inhibitors and the most resistant types of steel were selected as materials in production of production pipes.

Acquired brain injuries are often accompanied by a series of neuropsychiatric disorders. A wide range of pharmacological agents are used to treat neuropsychiatric symptoms. However, a more indepth review of the agents used indicates that there are in fact relatively few procedures recommended for use. Anticonvulsants including valproic acid, are of particular interest. This research aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of valproic acid, as based on a naturalistic observation of patients with various forms of acquired brain injury and who had displayed neuropsychiatric symptoms. The study group consisted of individuals (N = 43) who were treated with valproic acid as the first choice of drug. Both the initial dose and its size during further treatment, as well as the treatment method, were determined based on medical indications. The mental state of the patients was assessed twice: at the time of enrolment for the study and after 12 months. The Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) was used for the assessment. In addition, the degree of cognitive dysfunction was assessed during the baseline study using the MMSE scale. Eventually, 24 individuals were accepted for statistical analysis. They were re-examined after 12 months and took only valproic acid during that period. 24 out of 43 individuals qualified for the study completed the 12-month observation period. 11 respondents were excluded from the study due to their inappropriate tolerance. The reported side effects were of a temporary nature (except for hair loss) and of a mild or moderate intensity. It was observed that aggressive and impulsive behaviours were significantly reduced in the study group. The positive therapeutic effect concerned all categories in the CMAI scale, except for verbal aggression. The therapeutic effect of the valproic acid was varied depending on the degree of cognitive impairments. Statistical significance for higher MMSE scores was obtained only for the category of non-aggressive verbal disorders. On the other hand, in the case of lower MMSE scores a significant reduction was observed both in the categories of non-aggressive and aggressive physical behaviours, as well as for the overall CMAI scale result. The results obtained seem to indicate a satisfactory efficacy and acceptable tolerance of valproic acid in the treatment of the neuropsychiatric symptoms accompanying acquired brain injuries.

Ostatnie kilkanaście lat to okres dynamicznego rozwoju metod i technologii stymulacyjnych. Rozpoczął się on od momentu zakupu nowoczesnego sprzętu zabiegowego oraz nowoczesnego wyposażenia laboratorium zajmującego się problemami stymulacji wydobycia. Te zmiany pozwoliły na wprowadzanie do powszechnego zastosowania nowatorskich technologii intensyfikacyjnych. Dotyczyły one głównie dwóch obszarów. Pierwszy z nich to zmiana technologii w zabiegach hydraulicznego szczelinowania. W okresie kilkunastu lat wdrożono do stosowania nowoczesne ciecze technologiczne do szczelinowania oraz nowe materiały podsadzkowe w celu zwiększenia efektywności zabiegów. Drugi obszar doskonalenia technologii intensyfikacyjnych to zabiegi szczelinowania kwasem i kwasowania matrycowego. W tej dziedzinie przygotowano i wdrożono do stosowania technologie wieloetapowego kwasowania złóż, wykorzystania żeli i emulsji kwasowych do szczelinowania kwasem i kwasowania matrycowego. Wszystkie wspomniane technologie są stosowane obecnie w pracach intensyfikacyjnych wykonywanych złożach ropy naftowej i gazu ziemnego w kraju i zagranicą.
Last decade it is period of dynamic development of stimulation methods and technologies. The first stage of this was purchase of new stimulation service and stimulation laboratory equipment. It allows to introduce new technologies for industry use. The new technologies was prepared for two types of stimulation acivities. The first on is hydraulic fracturing. New kind of stimulation fluids and new proppants were prepared to increase treatment efficiency. The second area of activities is development of novel acid fracturing and matrix acidizing methods. New technologies of gelled and emulsified acid were prepared for industry use. All prepared technologies are used for stimulation treatment of oil and gas wells in Poland and abroad.

Objectives Hydrofluoric acid is used in a number of industries. Work-related accidents involving hydrofluoric acid can result in serious injury and death. The intent of this investigation was to describe work-related hydrofluoric acid exposures in Texas. Materials and Methods Work-related hydrofluoric acid exposures reported to Texas poison centers during 2000–2010 were identified. The distribution of exposures was determined for various demographic and clinical factors. Results There were 409 work-related hydrofluoric acid exposures in years 2000–2010. The number of work-related exposures declined from 69 in 2000 to 18 in 2010. The patients were 85.3% male and 96.6% age 20 years or older. The distribution of cases by route of exposure was 69.4% dermal contact, 21.0% inhalation, 12.0% ocular, and 3.7% ingestion. At the time of reporting to Texas poison centers, the patient was already at or en route to a health care facility in 71.9% of the cases and referred to a healthcare facility in 20.5% of the cases. The medical outcome was known or expected to be not serious in 51.6% of the cases. Conclusions Hydrofluoric acid exposures reported to Texas poison centers decreased over the eleven-year period. The patients were almost all adults and primarily male. Most of the exposures occurred by dermal contact followed by inhalation. The majority of patients were managed at healthcare facilities. Slightly over half of the exposures were known or expected to not result in serious outcomes.

The successful acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment needs site-specific installation and implementation, as well as the deployment of technology that is compatible with the pollutants contained in the AMD. If key by-products of the AMD can be recovered, the financial sustainability of the AMD remediation method may be greatly improved. Additional research into novel and innovative solutions is necessary to advance in this direction. To accomplish this, it is necessary to have a complete awareness of current remediation technologies that are available and accessible. Active physical treatment methods such as ion exchange, adsorption, electrochemistry, and membrane techniques were examined in this article. Membrane technology excels in terms of ease of use, versatility, and environmental effect but produces brine streams the management of which remains vital for future adoption of the technology. Liquid membranes (LM), Micellar Enhanced Ultra-Filtration (MEUF), and Polyelectrolyte Enhanced Ultra-Filtration (PEUF) are all innovative membrane technologies that may provide some possibilities for metal recovery from chemical sludge and/or brine streams. Electrochemical technologies are considered an attractive alternative for AMD treatment, because they require only electricity as a consumable and can treat AMD to high standards by removing metals via (co)precipitation and sulfate via ionic migration (when an anion-exchange membrane is used in the configuration), while producing significantly less sludge. However, the accepted shortcomings include membrane/electrode fouling produced by (co)precipitates on the active surfaces necessary for the process, a lack of understanding regarding the effective scaling up to industrial scale, and the relatively expensive capital expenditure (CAPEX) required. The removal of heavy metals from AMD effluents by adsorption has a number of technical and environmental benefits, including high efficiency, and environmental friendliness. Despite its benefits, this technique has certain hurdles, such as the production process for low-cost adsorbents.

The aim of the presented study was to determine the effect of foliar application of CaCl2 on the level of β-carotene, lutein, tocopherols and phenolic compounds in the leaves of lettuce cv. Omega (Lactuca sativa L.). The experiments were conducted in the greenhouse of the Faculty of Cultivation and Fertilisation of Horticultural Plants, University of Life Sciences in Lublin. During the growing period, 7 and 14 days before harvest, the plants were treated with a solution of CaCl2 with concentrations of 0.1 M and 0.2 M. Plants sprayed with water were the control treatment in the experiment. Analyses were performed on whole leaves and the blade without midrib. The obtained results indicate that the leaves of lettuce cv. Omega are a good source of phenolic compounds, carotenoids and tocopherols. The dominant carotenoid in lettuce cv. Omega was β-carotene. Foliar application of CaCl2 on the plants did not have any significant effect on the level of β-carotene and lutein in the whole leaves. The contents of tocopherols, total phenolic compounds and chlorogenic acid were dependent on the concentration of CaCl2. The application of 0.1 M CaCl2 solution in the plants resulted in a decrease in the level of total phenolic compounds and chlorogenic acid, and an increase in tocopherol content. However, the treatment of the plants with 0.2M CaCl2 solution caused a lowering of the concentration of tocopherols and an increase in the content of chlorogenic acid and total phenolic compounds.

Introduction: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have become an important breakthrough in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, in patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) – one of the extraesophageal variants of the disease – the efficacy of PPI is incomplete or limited and alleviation of symptoms requires additional medications. As of today, the importance of hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitin sulphate (CS) and their role in mucosal damage healing, most particularly within the larynx, is being highlighted. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the outcomes of treatment in LPR patients receiving a combination of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate (HA + CS) on a bioadhesive carrier. Material and methods: A total of 51 patients (18 males and 33 females) aged 25–75 years and presenting with LPR symptoms further confirmed in a laryngovideoscopic examination, were included in the study. Patients were qualified for the study on the basis of reflux symptom index (RSI) of above 13 and reflux finding score (RFS) of above 7. Patients were recommended to use the HA + CS combination product for 14 days and were evaluated after this time. Results: Symptoms suggestive of significant or severe problem (RSI of 4 or 5) before the treatment included: throat clearing (48 patients; 90.19%), hoarseness (29 patients; 56.86%) and cough after eating/cough while lying down (37 patients; 72.50%). After the treatment, patients reported a moderate impact of the above symptoms on their everyday functioning (P < 0.001). Symptoms such as pharyngeal mucus presence, acute cough, sensation of foreign body in the throat, while declared as moderate at baseline (score of 3) resolved to mild (score of 1) following the supportive treatment (P < 0.001). Total RSI after the treatment was assessed as borderline for LPR diagnosis (median 13, range 12–15). Although patients were not completely freed of their reflux symptoms, a significant reduction in symptoms was achieved in the entire study group. Prior to the treatment, the most common morphological changes within the larynx included redness/congestion, vocal fold edema and posterior commissure hypertrophy. These changes were observed in all patients. After the treatment, the RFS fell below the LPR diagnostic threshold (median 6, range 5–7). Compared to baseline values (median 9, range 8–10), significant improvement of laryngeal changes was observed in nearly the entire study group (N = 50; 98.04%) (P < 0.001). Conclusions: The combination product consisting of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate on a bioadhesive acts locally to significantly reduce laryngopharyngeal reflux symptoms, particularly in patients with chronic cough, throat clearing, and hoarseness. In addition, by lining the laryngeal mucosa with a protective layer, the product facilitates better hydration as well as faster healing and regeneration of the mucosal membrane, thus leading to a reduction or resolution of morphological changes within the larynx.

In this paper the result of the study on chemical leaching of zinc concentrate with H2SO4 solution was presented. The object of this work was to assess the effect of some parameters such as acid concentration, the leaching agent amount /stoichiometry amount or excess of acid were applied/, reaction time and temperature on the process. The investigation was performed as a active experiment according to Hartley's plan. The process optimisation procedure was based on the fuzzy logic system. Mainly, the parameters such as magnesium leaching efficiency and zinc losses were taken into account. It was stated that the highest magnesium leaching efficiency of 77.8% with low Zn-losses was reached when H2SO4 solution concentration was 2.5% for 20%-excess of acid, at temperature 25°C and process time of 1 hour.

The article presents the possibility of using potassium ferrate(VI) (K2FeO4) to remove dyes (Acid Red 27, Reactive Black 5, Acid Green 16) belonging to the single azo, double azo and triarylmethane classes from aqueous solutions with an initial concentration of 100 mg/l (Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) values for AR27, RB5 and AG16 sulutions were 172, 156 and 198 mg O2/l, respectively). For the most favorable values of oxidation parameters of AR27 and RB5 (pH 7, K2FeO4 concentration, 180 and 240 mg/l, respectively, reaction time 10 min), visual discolouration of the aqueous solutions investigated and a decrease in COD values of 83.7% and 81.4%, respectively, were achieved. In the case of AG 16 dye, in the most favorable conditions of the oxidation process (pH 3, K2FeO4, concentration 300 mg/l, 15 min), visual discolouration and a decrease in the COD value of 83.8% were also obtained. The probable reasons for the higher resistance of AG16 to oxidation using K2FeO4 compared to AR27 and RB5 were also explained, based on the analysis of the structure and type of bonds present in the molecule AG 16.
W artykule przedstawiono możliwość zastosowania żelazianu(VI) potasu (K2FeO4) do usuwania barwników (Acid Red 27, Reactive Black 5, Acid Green 16), należących do barwników azowych i triarylometanowych z roztworów wodnych o stężeniu początkowym 100 mg/dm3 (wartości ChZT(Cr) dla roztworów Acid Red 27, Reactive Black 5 i Acid Green 16 wynosiły odpowiednio 172, 156 i 198 mg O2/dm3). Dla najkorzystniejszych wartości parametrów procesu utleniania Acid Red 27, Reactive Black 5 (pH 7, stężenie K2FeO4 odpowiednio 180 i 240 mg/dm3, czas reakcji 10 min.), uzyskano wizualne odbarwienie badanych roztworów wodnych oraz zmniejszenie wartości ChZT(Cr), odpowiednio o 83,7% i 81,4%. W przypadku barwnika Acid Green 16, w najkorzystniejszych warunkach przebiegu procesu utleniania (pH 3, stężenie K2FeO4 300 mg/dm3, czas reakcji 15 min.), uzyskano także wizualne odbarwienie oraz zmniejszenie wartości ChZT(Cr) o 83,8%. Wyjaśniono też prawdopodobne przyczyny większej odporności Acid Green 16 w stosunku do Acid Red 27 i Reactive Black 5 na utlenianie z zastosowaniem K2FeO4, na podstawie analizy budowy i rodzaju wiązań obecnych w cząsteczce barwnika Acid Green 16.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of presowing conditioning, hormone permeation, and fungicide application on the vigour of seeds and seedlings as well as the yield of marjoram herb collected from the cultivation started by direct sowing into the open field. The methods of presowing seed treatment were as follows: soaking in GA3, matriconditioning with solid substance MicroCel-E, osmoconditioning in the solution of polyethylene glycol PEG 6000. Seeds of every combination were either dressed with Penncozeb or sown without fungicide. The yield and quality of marjoram herb were tested in the field experiments conducted in the region of Central and Southern Poland. The phytopathological analysis of seeds showed their low infestation by microorganisms, this not increasing following the seed conditioning and soaking in GA3 solution. The measurements of seedling vigour under controlled conditions proved the positive effect of every tested method of presowing seed treatment. Irrespective of localization, the yields of marjoram herb and essential oil were the highest with the crop from matriconditioned seeds. The effect of seed osmoconditioning and soaking in GA3 solution as well as fungicide application depended on the localization of marjoram growing.
Celem pracy było zbadanie wpływu zabiegów przedsiewnego uszlachetniania nasion oraz ich zaprawiania chemicznego na wigor nasion i siewek oraz plon ziela majeranku ogrodowego w uprawie z siewu wprost na pole. Metody uszlachetniania nasion obejmowały: moczenie w roztworze gibereliny, matrykondycjonowanie substancją stałą MicroCel-E i osmokondycjonowanie w roztworze glikolu polietylenowego PEG 6000. Tak przygotowane nasiona oraz kontrolne były zarówno zaprawione chemicznie (Penncozeb 80WP) bezpośrednio przed siewem, jak i wysiewane bez stosowania fungicydu. Plon i jakość ziela majeranku były badane w dwu równolegle prowadzonych doświadczeniach polowych w rejonie Polski Centralnej i Południowej. Analiza fitopatologiczna wykazała niewielkie zasiedlenie nasion przez mikroorganizmy oraz brak jego wzrostu wskutek zastosowanych metod uszlachetniania. Obserwacje wigoru siewek prowadzone w warunkach kontrolowanych wskazywały na korzystny wpływ każdej z metod przedsiewnego uszlachetniania. Niezależnie od lokalizacji doświadczenia (Warszawa, Kraków) plon ziela majeranku i olejku eterycznego były najwyższe w uprawie z nasion matrykondycjonowanych. Wpływ pozostałych metod uszlachetniania oraz stosowania fungicydu zależał od miejsca uprawy.

Opis:
Man’s activities on the environment often results in pollution and degradation of water bodies. Water bodies must therefore be jealously guided and protected from being polluted, which will affect water quality and availability for desired usage. Causes of water quality impairment are urban and rural storm water runoff, inadequate waste water treatment, nutrient entrophication, atmospheric deposition and acid rain, pollutant in sediments and fish, and nuisance aquatic weed growth and invasive species. Other factors include unhygienic disposal and inadequate treatment of human and livestock wastes, indecent management and treatment of industrial residues, inappropriate agricultural practices and unsafe solid waste discharge. Suggested strategies to combat water quality problems which should form the basis of policy solution for improving water quality include: (i) prevention of pollution; (ii) treatment of polluted water; (iii) safe use of waste water; and (iv) restoration and protection of ecosystem. It is recommended that our water bodies and the environment in general should be protected through appropriate legislation guidelines and public literacy campaign and mass education to sensitize, educate and make the people a fully environmentally literate society. Taking these steps internationally, nationally and locally will mean better water quality for our present society and future generation.

Opis:
Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) is an ornamental bulbous plant and a famous cut flower in tropical and subtropical regions. Post-harvest senescence of the cut flowers is the main factor limiting the marketability of most of these species including tuberose. From the perspective of metabolic changes, senescence happens as the result of oxidative processes induced by active oxygen species production. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and salicylic acid (SA) are compounds with some functions in the post-harvest physiology of some plants. The present study focused on the effect of GABA and SA on vase life and some post-harvest traits of cut tuberose flowers. The plants were sprayed with GABA (5, 10, or 15 mg L–1) and SA (50, 100, or 150 mg L–1) at three stages during growth and before harvest in a greenhouse (30, 45, and 60 days after the planting of the bulbs) and were observed after harvest until senescence. Results showed that GABA and SA positively affected the vase life, water uptake, fresh weight, ion leakage, total dissolved solids, chlorophyll, protein, and catalase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase enzymatic activity. They postponed senescence. The highest and lowest vase lives were observed in plants treated with 10 mg L–1 GABA (11 days) and control (distilled water) (7 days), respectively. It was found that the treatment of tuberose with GABA and SA during growth can improve its post-harvest quality. However, it is recommended to conduct further studies on them.

Current studies on betalains are focused on searching of new plant sources of these pigments. In this light, purple pitaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus) is a valuable batalain-containing fruit. Betalains are known to be sensitive at elevated temperatures conditions. Nevertheless, addition of specific food stabilizers (EDTA, ascorbic acid, citric acid) as well as natural matrix compounds may exert stabilizing effect on maintenance of pigments. Therefore, in presented study, the stability of betalains in Hylocereus polyrhizus juices with protective addition of ascorbic acid at 85 ̊C was examined. Spectrophotometric analyses enable monitoring of reaction during heating of solutions. The hypsochromic shift of λmax to 460 nm is observed in more acidic media without ascorbic acid, suggesting the generation of new reaction products. These absorption bands in solutions with ascorbic acid are not detected, indicating on retaining of the basic structure of betalain chromophore. Generally, pigment retention is diminishing with prolonged heating and depends on pH-values of tested solutions. The addition of ascorbic acid significantly affects the betalain stability. After 60 min of heating, more than 60% of the initial pigment is retained at pH 3-4 in samples of purple pitaya with ascorbic acid. In summary, betacyanins in purple pitaya juice are shown to exhibit proper heat stability, when are stabilized with ascorbic acid. However, a protective effect of natural juice matrix and ascorbic acid is more significant at acidic pH.

In this paper the results of investigation of magnesium removal from raw zinc concentrate have been presented. The raw materials derive from ZG Trzebionka and ZGH Bolesław. The differences in zinc and magnesium contents are characteristic of these materials. The experiments were carried out in the periodical reactor at 25°C using the H2SO4 solution of 20, 50, and 70% (v/v) concentration. The weight ratio of the solid phase to the liquid phase was 1:10 and 1:2. On the basis of the experimental results it can be stated that the application of sulphuric(VI) acid leaching permits to increase the zinc yield in Zn-Pb ore processing. This method permits to obtain zinc concentrate containing more than 60% Zn and MgO below 0.3% and CaO about 1.4%.
