Opis:
The Abstraction Based Connectionist Analogy Processor (AB-CAP) is a trainable neural network for analogical learning/inference. An internal abstraction model, which extracts the underlying relational isomorphism and expresses predicate-argument bindings at the abstract level, is induced structurally as a result of the backpropagation training coupled with a structure- pruning mechanism. AB-CAP also develops dynamically abstraction and de- abstraction mappings for the role-filler matching. Thus, the propositions including both known and inferred ones can be expressed by, induced as, stored in and retrieved from the internal structural patterns. As such, there is no need for AB-CAP to use rule-based symbolic processing such as hypothesis making and constraint satisfaction or pattern completion checking. In this paper, AB-CAP is evaluated by using some examples. In particular, incremental analogical learning by AB-CAP shows that the internal abstraction model acquired from previous analogical learning acts as a potent attracter to bind a new set of isomorphic data, manifesting the analogical memory access/retrieval characteristics of AB-CAP.

Analogia jest jednym z podstawowych sposobów zdobywania wiedzy i wyrażania jej za pomocą języka tak, aby zachować realizm i racjonalizm. Drewnowski zaproponował pojęcie analogii jako „formalnej odpowiedniości”. Później, gdy zajmował się filozofią praktyczną, ujmował analogię przy pomocy schematu przestrzennego. W artykule przedstawiono przykłady wykorzystania obu typów analogii w całym dziele Drewnowskiego, w szczególności w dziedzinie teologii. Porównano też zastosowanie analogii według Drewnowskiego i Bocheńskiego do opisu dogmatu Trójcy Świętej oraz przedstawiono metodę filozoficzną Drewnowskiego jako analogiczną do metody fizyki.
Analogy is one of the basic ways of acquiring knowledge and expressing it with the help of language in order to preserve realism and rationalism. Drewnowski proposed the concept of analogy as “formal correspondence”. Later, when he was dealing with practical philosophy, he described an analogy in his “spatial scheme”. The article presents examples of the use of both types of analogy in the entire work of Drewnowski, especially in the field of theology. The use of concepts of analogy according to Drewnowski and Bocheński to the description of the dogma of the Holy Trinity was also compared, and the philosophical method of Drewnowski was presented as analogous to the method of physics.

The author presents and compares Maritain’s and Aquinas’s accounts of our discovery (1) of being as existing; and (2) of being as being (ens inquantum ens or the subject of metaphysics). He finds that especially in his final discussion of how one discovers being as being, Maritain’s account suffers greatly from the absence of any appeal to Aquinas’s negative judgment of separation and also from the omission of reference to the role of judgments of existence in one’s discovery of a premetaphysical notion of being. Wippel finds no evidence in Aquinas’s texts for Maritain’s defense of an intuition of being or of existence.

Niniejszy tekst wzywa do powrotu do teorii pracy rozwijanej przez Marksa, czy raczej do Marksowskiej negatywnej krytyki pracy oraz jej „decydującej” roli w rozumieniu ekonomii politycznej szkolnictwa wyższego. Autor twierdzi, że krytyka kapitalizmu i jego pozornej złożoności musi zostać podjęta w oparciu o bezpośrednią krytykę pracy, nie zaś z punktu widzenia pracy, jak miało to miejsce zarówno w marksistowskich, jak i nie-marksistowskich badaniach nad pracą. Przyglądając się egzemplarycznym artykułom poświęconym „pracy akademickiej”, niniejszy artykuł zwraca uwagę na fundamentalne znaczenie stosowania Marksowskiej metody abstrakcji w celu zrozumienia konkretnego społecznego świata kapitału. Na koniec sugeruje, że przyszłość pracy akademickiej leży raczej w jej zaprzeczeniu i przekroczeniu niż w wysiłkach mających na celu oparcie się „logice” pomnażania wartości.
This essay calls for a return to the labour theory of Marx, or rather to Marx’s negative critique of labour and its “pivotal” role in comprehending the political economy of higher education. It argues that a critique of capitalism and its apparent complexity must be undertaken through an immanent critique of labour, rather than from the standpoint of labour as has been the case in both Marxist and non-Marxist traditions of labour studies. Through a review of exemplar articles on ‘academic labour’, the essay draws attention to the fundamental importance of employing Marx’s method of abstraction so as to understand the concrete social world of capital. Finally, it proposes that the future of academic labour is to be found in its negation and overcoming rather than in efforts to resist the ‘logic’ of valorisation.

Particularly in the latter half of the nineteenth century sensorial experiences changed at breakneck speed. Social and technological developments of modernity like the industrial revolution, rapid urban expansion, the advance of capitalism and the invention of new technologies transformed the field of the senses. Instead of attentiveness, distraction became prevalent. It is not only Baudelaire who addressed these transformations in his poems, but they can also be recognized in the works of novelist Gustave Flaubert and painter Edward Munch. By means of the work of William James, Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Georg Simmel, the repercussions of this crisis of the senses for subjectivity will be discussed.

This article is a report on the planned and conducted series of experimental art classes dedicated to children in early school age. The aim of the presented initial research was the verification of a working hypothesis assuming the positive influence of a planned and conducted art lesson class cycle inspired by abstraction, on the creative potential of the participants. In the research project presented and described below, abstraction has been treated as a potential factor stimulating creative thinking, the level of which has been identified by using Drawing Creative Thinking Test by K.K. Urban and H.G. Jellen (TCT-DP) in pre and post-experimental version. The research project was implemented on the basis of a quasi-experimental method, however – which must be emphasized – it has been based on the assumptions of action research and constructed on the basis of the ARTography category. 64 students from the first grade and two second grades of a primary school participated in the experimental class cycle. 47 pairs of drawings created on the basis of TCP-DP sheets have been analyzed and assessed. As a consequence, the distinguished working hypothesis has been initially confirmed – however, the presented research field requires further research, exploration and detailed analyses. The presented research and its initial results constitute a factor initiating the considerations regarding the possibility of applying and implementing non-standard solutions in art lessons, which – as it turns out, end up being solutions that are enriching and desirable, especially from the creative thinking perspective.

W prezentowanym tekście odnoszę się do wybranych aspektów problematyki światła we współczesnym polskim malarstwie abstrakcyjnym. Wśród rozmaitych artystycznych postaw daje się wyodrębnić rozumienie światła w naturalnym, fizykalnym sensie, jak też poszukiwanie jego metafizycznych źródeł i konotacji. W przyjętej przez mnie perspektywie istotna jest refleksja nad związkiem między pojmowaniem światła w malarstwie niefiguratywnym a tradycją religijną i filozoficzną. To bogate i złożone zagadnienie omawiam na przykładach prac, które ukazują różnorodne artystyczne ujęcia i interpretacje. Analizie zostają poddane cztery cykle obrazów autorstwa wybitnych malarzy: Genesis Adama Brinckena, Dekalog Stefana Gierowskiego, Ikony Tadeusza G. Wiktora oraz Epifanie i Angelos Władysława Podrazika. Opisowi specyfiki poszczególnych cykli towarzyszy odpowiedni kontekst wyznaczany przez Biblię, teologię ikony, filozofię światła Pseudo-Dionizego Aeropagity czy Roberta Grosseteste. Interesuje mnie także osobisty aspekt twórczego doświadczenia, który znajduje wyraz w wypowiedziach samych autorów. Zawarte w tekście elementy analizy stylistycznej podkreślają oryginalność dzieł, przekładających odwieczny archetyp światła na współczesną formę i ekspresję.
The problem of light in contemporary Polish abstract painting has heterogenous aspects. Light is explored in its natural, physical state by artists who develop new formal qualities in their artworks, but there is also a tendency to reveal the spiritual dimension. I analyze some of the most representative examples of the usage of light in its metaphysical meaning. It would be impossible to present the full panoply of this tendency, which is why I have chosen to focus on four cycles of artworks by recognized Polish painters: Adam Brincken, Stefan Gierowski, Tadeusz G. Wiktor and Władysław Podrazik. I examine the specifics of treatment of light in each case and I try to emphasize the religious, philosophical or spiritual basis for it. In the paintings one can find original interpretations of the biblical, Neoplatonic or Orthodox traditions, which is combined with personal experiences of the artists. What also interests me is the connection between the archetypal symbol of light and its contemporary form and expression.

In recent decades, there has been increasing interest in including the spiritual dimension in artistic practice and in discourse on art. This phenomenon seems to be universal but is definitely not homogenic. I examine it by referring to meaningful examples of abstract paintings from different cultural and religious backgrounds. I analyze artworks by two contemporary bicultural painters: the American-Japanese artist, Makoto Fujimura, and American-Iranian artist, Yari Ostovany. The Polish non-figurative artist Tadeusz G. Wiktor is also considered. Their oeuvre can be set within the larger context of great religious and spiritual traditions. I stress the influence of Oriental legacy in contemporary examples of abstract art. I investigate how the selected artworks refer to an invisible reality, and I focus especially on the silence they evoke. My aim is to show how contemporary non-figurative art can influence the viewer by creating a contemplative experience. I also place the selected artworks in the theoretical contexts presented by the artists themselves and refer to classical and contemporary texts.
Tekst koncentruje się na problematyce duchowości we współczesnym malarstwie abstrakcyjnym. Ten złożony fenomen obecny w sztuce i dyskursie krytycznym od wielu dekad można badać w wielu perspektywach. W proponowanym ujęciu uwydatniony został przede wszystkim aspekt ciszy i doświadczenia kontemplacyjnego, przy czym rozważony został on przy uwzględnieniu przenikania się dziedzictwa Wschodu z zachodnią spuścizną malarstwa abstrakcyjnego. Przedmiotem analiz stały się prace dwóch artystów reprezentujących zjawisko dwukulturowości, amerykańsko-japońskiego malarza Makoto Fujimury i amerykańsko-irańskiego twórcy Yariego Ostowany. Następnie kieruję uwagę na wybrane, najnowsze prace wybitnego polskiego abstrakcjonisty Tadeusza G. Wiktora, zestawiając je z wcześniej omawianymi dziełami. Artykuł rozpoczyna się od syntetycznego szkicu ukazującego zagadnienie duchowości i koncepcje ciszy w malarstwie niefiguratywnym. Kolejne części poświęcone są poszczególnym artystom, których twórczość zostaje osadzona zarówno w kontekście kulturowym, jak też religijno-duchowym. W dwóch branych pod uwagę przypadkach wskazuję na oddziaływanie orientalnych inspiracji wynikających z pochodzenia twórców. Głównym celem artykułu jest ukazanie, w jaki sposób analizowana sztuka oddziałuje na odbiorcę poprzez wytworzenie doświadczenia kontemplacyjnego oraz uzmysłowienie wartości ciszy w otoczeniu kulturowym współczesnego człowieka. Tłem rozważań są wypowiedzi samych twórców oraz klasyczne i najnowsze propozycje podejmowane w literaturze przedmiotu.

Selected works of the contemporary Polish abstract painting in the light of Ingarden’s conception of metaphysical qualities: The main thesis of my article is that Roman Ingarden’s concept of metaphysical qualities can be adapted to analyze and interpret artworks that represent some tendencies in abstract painting. I start by summarizing this concept, taking into consideration the elements of its reconstructions that are present in the source literature, especially those aspects that concern art. Although Ingarden’s idea can be used with many examples, I employ it to analyze chosen artworks by the outstanding Polish abstract artists Tamara Berdowska, Władysław Podrazik, Tadeusz G. Wiktor and Jan Pamuła. I do not intend to refer to these paintings strictly in Ingarden’s terms, but I use these criteria in a way that allows me to enrich the interpretation of these artworks by showing them in a new light. By recognizing the role of contemplation of art, I try to fnd the genesis of the analyzed examples and reveal how metaphysical qualities manifest in them and infuence the viewer. I underline aspects that are distinctive of the presented artists and are related to the exceptional ability of abstract language to correspond to Ingarden’s idea. Subsequently, when developing my point of view I maintain the relationship between aesthetic and metaphysical sense that creates a kind of interdependence. These artists intentionally go beyond purely aesthetic efects to relate to transcendence. By adapting Ingarden’s concept to some contemporary abstractions, I try to link philosophical and critical ways of approaching these artistic phenomena with special regards to their metaphysical connotations that tend to be overlooked in contemporary discourses.

The article begins with elements of the idealistic philosophy of participation. The introduction includes both Plato’s thought regarding the possibility of participating in the world of ideas and the concepts of being (including the Absolute Being), acting and existence of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Finally, the notion of religious faith in participating in God’s truth and love is discussed. The examples of works by Janusz Orbitowski, Grzegorz Sztabiński, Mirosław Bałka, Sebastian Wywiórski and Zbigniew Libera are described then as contemporary artistic attempts to participate in the metaphysical reality. The participation not only occurs thanks to the very metaphysical nature of art, but it is also the content and theme of works. Artists address the issues of being, essence, act, ideal pattern, the idea of writing, eternity, love relationship as participation in the idea of the Good. The poetic use of symbols and paradoxes also serves to relate to metaphysics. It is precisely poetics that is ultimately indicated as a way of participating in the metaphysical reality clearly present in contemporary visual arts.
Tekst rozpoczyna wprowadzenie w idealistyczną filozofię partycypacji. Zawiera ono przypomnienie o myśli Platona dotyczącej możliwości uczestniczenia w świecie idei, o koncepcjach bytu (w tym Bytu Absolutnego), aktu i egzystencji w filozofii Św. Tomasza z Akwinu oraz o religijnej wierze w uczestniczenie w prawdzie i miłości Boga. Opisane dalej przykłady dzieł Janusza Orbitowskiego, Grzegorza Sztabińskiego, Mirosława Bałki, Sebastiana Wywiórskiego * i Zbigniewa Libery zinterpretowane zostają jako współczesne próby artystycznego uczestniczenia w rzeczywistości metafizycznej. Dzieje się to przez samą metafizyczność sztuki oraz przez podejmowanie w treści i formie dzieł zagadnień bytu, esencji, akt, idealnego wzoru, idei pisma, wieczności, relacji miłosnej jako uczestniczenia w idei Dobra. Relacji z metafizyką służy także poetyckie wykorzystanie symbolu i paradoksu. Właśnie poetyckość zostaje ostatecznie wskazana jako sposób partycypowania w rzeczywistości metafizycznej wyraźnie obecny we współczesnych sztukach wizualnych.

Opis:
The text focuses on Janusz Orbitowski, a Krakow-based painter of geometric abstraction, and on his teaching methods at the Academy of Fine Arts. This discussion is combined with interpretation of his works. Orbitowski’s distance to the academic milieu and his quiet teaching of traditional nude drawing are presented as a contrast to his openness and “energetic” lifestyle among friends, as well as to the distinct expressiveness found in his works. The text suggests that the paradoxical duality of silent invisibility, concealed by expression, could lead the artist and his students as well as the viewers of his art to a variety of cognitive experiences, including metaphysical cognition.

Opis:
Odejście od klasycznych kanonów estetyki spowodowało, że sztuka, a w konsekwencji także architektura kierują się innymi niż dotychczas zasadami. Niezależnie od istnienia różnych tendencji w sztuce wyraźnie wyróżniają się dwa nurty: organiczny i geometryczny. Wskutek tego zjawiska architektura oscyluje pomiędzy tymi dwoma wpływami. To one powodują, że sztuka abstrakcyjna w różnych aspektach odnajduje swoją interpretację w języku formy architektonicznej. Warta podkreślenia jest także znaczna rola ekspresjonizmu na tle stale przekształcającej się architektury.
Resignation of the classical canons of aesthetics caused that art and thereby architecture follow the new rules. Independently of the different existing trends in art, two mainstreams are featured clearly: the organic and the geometrical. It is the reason why architecture oscillates between both of the infl uences. Because of those infl uences, abstract art found its interpretation in the architectural form. It is also worth emphasing the important role of expressionism against the background of changeable architecture.

Opis:
The paper demonstrates both: firstly, a research strategy for the social science analysis of autobiographical narrative interviews, and, secondly, a research strategy for the social science use of published oral history and/or autobiographical materials. It is an attempt to demonstrate a text-oriented procedure of biography analysis in the social sciences, especially – sociology. This allows the empirically grounded generation both of general theoretical concepts for socio-biographical processes, and of conceptual provisions for the uniqueness of the features and dynamics of biographical and historical single cases, their situations, and phases. The paper deals with the analysis of autobiographical accounts of war experiences and it shows the general mechanisms of collective, social, and biographical processes, on the one hand, and the uniqueness of historical, situational, and biographical developments, on the other, coexist during wars in an especially ironical, tragic, elating, depressive, dangerous, hurting, deadly combination.
