Opis:
Solidago canadensis (Canadian goldenrod) is an invasive plant species occurring in Poland. Canadian goldenrod tolerates a wide range of habitat conditions, it grows in landfills and soils contaminated with heavy metals. The paper presents the selected biometric features of the plant which indicate the possibility of its use for phytoremediation purposes. The analysis was based on the results of own research and literature data. The biometric features of the plant chose for the research are: aboveground biomass (which reaches about 4.4 tons d.m/ha on a surface covered with the plant in more than 70%), the possibility of annual collection of the aboveground parts and their use for energy purposes, extensive roots and rhizomes system ensuring soil stabilization, high accumulation of some metals in the underground parts of the plant.

Hampangen Education Forest (HEF) has great potential in terms of carbon stock, biodiversity, and contribution to the local community’s livelihood. In the future, it is planned to develop its role in climate change mitigation; thus, valid and updated information regarding climate regulation services are required. The purpose of this study was to assess the above ground biomass (AGB) at different canopy densities of swamp secondary forest in (HEF) and estimated the total AGB stored in this area. The research was carried out from April 2022 until July 2022. The data collected included tree diameter at breast height (DBH), tree total height, the weight of litter, and understorey vegetation. All the information was collected using two types of observation plots (400 m2 and 0.25 m2) and AGB was calculated using allometric equations. This research found that the average AGB at sparse, medium, and dense canopy cover was 70.46 Mg.ha-1, 80.94 Mg.ha-1, and 145.03 Mg.ha-1, respectively. The total AGB stored in HEF was 367,180.08 Mg (tonnes) and equivalent to above-ground carbon stock of 172,574.64 Mg carbon. The finding of this research suggests that HEF needs conservation strategies to improve its carbon stock and conserve biodiversity.

In this study, the winter wheat aboveground biomass (AGB), leaf area index (LAI) and leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC) were estimated using the vegetation indices, derived from a high spatial resolution Pleiades imagery. The AGB, LAI and LNC estimation equations were established between the selected VIs, such as NDVI, EVI and SAVI. Regression models (linear and exponential) were examined to determine the best empirical regression equations for estimating the crop characteristics. The results showed that all three vegetation indices provide the AGB, LAI and LNC estimations. The application of NDVI showed the smallest value of RMSE for the aboveground biomass estimation at stem elongation and heading of winter wheat. EVI gave the best significant estimation of LNC and showed better results to quantify winter wheat vegetation characteristics at stem elongation phase. This study demonstrated that Pleiades high spatial resolution imagery provides in-situ crop monitoring.

Opis:
This methodological study evaluated the efficiency of predicting aboveground biomass and grain yield in fieldgrown winter wheat by measuring the saturation root electrical capacitance at anthesis. Three cultivars were grown over a threeyear period as sole crops and intercropped with winter pea at halved wheat density. The root capacitance readings were converted into saturation root electrical capacitance using the relevant soil water content, according to an empirical function. At plant scale, saturation root electrical capacitance at anthesis showed a significant (p < 0.001) linear regression with the total aboveground biomass (R2: 0.653-0.765) and grain yield (R2: 0.585-0.686) at maturity for each cultivar. At stand scale, both the mean saturation root electrical capacitance and shoot dry mass at anthesis and grain yield varied over the years, and were consistently higher for the intercrops compared to the sole crops. The relative increase in saturation root electrical capacitance due to intercropping corresponded with the changes in shoot dry mass and grain yield, especially in dry years. Saturation root electrical capacitance was significantly correlated with shoot dry mass (R2: 0.714-0.899) and grain yield (R2: 0.742-0.877) for each cultivar across all cropping systems and years. In conclusion, by mitigating the soil water content effect, the measurement of saturation root electrical capacitance at anthesis is adequate to forecast grain yield and cultivar response to a changing environment.

Opis:
The two dipterocarp species, Dipterocarpus alatus and Hopea odorata, have been widely planted in degraded forest land in Southern Vietnam in the last decades. However, study on growth characteristics of these species and their associated factors is still limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine growth performance in different stand densities, and classify tree quality in 28-year old D. alatus and H. odorata plantations. Our results of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that in pure stand aged 28 years, D. alatus outperformed H. odorata in tree growth, biomass and volume. In addition, except for four growth variables including tree height at the first branch (Hb), crown length (CL), crown ratio (CR) and linear crown index (LCI), the remaining variables were negatively affected by stand density. We observed that medium quality trees occupied the greatest proportion in both D. alatus (47%; n = 425) and H. od- orata (50%; n = 400). Except for CR and LCI, the class of good quality trees had the greatest values in the remaining examined growth variables. In linear discriminant analysis (LDA) model, the classification accuracy of testing set was relatively high in both D. alatus (85%) and H. odorata (91%). The most impor- tant variables for tree quality classification in D. alatus were crown diameter (CD) and diameter at breast height (DBH). Meanwhile, the most important variables in H. odorata were CD and tree height (H). These obtained results suggest that controlling crown size is important for shaping individual tree quality. Our data evidenced that D. alatus and H. odorata planted in Southern Vietnam with density equal or less than 500 trees per ha could yield high proportion of good and medium quality trees.

We studied the relationship between tree-species diversity and the above-ground biomass on an example of two natural Polish forest with different altitiudinal range, plant species pool, vegetation and climatic conditions. The study sought to determine whether: (1) above-ground biomass in natural forests correlates with tree-species diversity irrespective of the kind of forest (montane or lowland), and (2) the relationship in question is negative, (3) the above-ground biomass is greater in montane forests than in lowland ones. Natural forests present in 1º Polish Gorce Mountains (montane forest) alongside comparable data for the 2º world-renowned lowland forest that is present in the Białowieża National Park. Data were collected within 558 sample plots (á 200-square-metre). The diameter at breast height of all trees with girths of or exceeding 12 cm was measured. To compute above-ground biomass we calculated dry masses for each tree on the basis of values for dbh and height, next we summed these values for all species present within each plot. The number of tree species on a plot ranged from only one (mainly in spruce stands) to six (in mixed deciduous lowland forest stands). The above-ground accumulated biomass ranged from 6 to 1155 (average 251±13) t ha–1 within the lowland forest, and from 2 to 849 (average 242±8) t ha–1 within the montane forest. We concluded that there was a humped-back shaped relationship between tree-species diversity and above-ground biomass in both lowland and montane natural forests.

It is not clear to what extent trees growing on anthropogenic sites change their growth and biomass allocation to different organs. We assessed the aboveground biomass in a chronosequence of six Scots pine monocultures (between 6 and 20 years old) to examine how precisely the site-specific or control allometric equations may reflect the value of biomass accumulation and allocation in stands growing in harsh site conditions on the overlayer spoil heap made as a result of opencast brown coal mining. The site is characterized by poor edaphic and water conditions and nutrient deficiency. The control equations were developed from Scots pine stands growing on post-agricultural lands in the close vicinity of the spoil heap. We found that equation type significantly influenced results of predicted biomass accumulation for all biomass components studied (although results were only marginally significant for total aboveground biomass, P=0.08). Total aboveground biomass in younger stands (6–9 years old) estimated using site-specific equations was >40% higher and for older stands (17–20 years old) from 7 to 27% lower than estimated using equations developed for the control sites. Our study revealed that under harsh environmental conditions in spoil heaps, biomass of young Scots pine stands significantly differ from values calculated based on control equations developed for more fertile soils with better water conditions in the same region. The control biomass equations may not be suitable to estimate biomass accumulation in stands growing on infertile habitats with poor water conditions, if the control equations are developed for nearby stands but growing under better site conditions.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the biosocial position occupied by the tree on the amount and structure of the biomass produced. The empirical material was measurements of biomass for 63 pines (21 for each of the I, II, and III Kraft classes). The total aboveground biomass of the trees was calculated as sum of following fractions: stem wood, stem bark, living branches, dead branches, shoots, needles and cones. It has been found that with a decrease of biosocial position of tree the share of a stem increases while share of branches in the overall biomass of the tree decreases. On the other hand biosocial position does not affect significantly the share of needles, dead branches and cones.

The present research deals with carbon sequestration, as an important process for mitigating the effects of climate change. The investigation focuses on a 30-year period and it covers only aboveground biomass that builds up from natural forest regrowth, excluding any plantation techniques. Potential carbon sequestration rate from natural forest regrowth in Godech Municipality was measured in Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ and the resolution of the map was 1x1 km. The results of the study display that carbon accumulation values in the researched area were consistent with those that were expected in the largest parts of Bulgaria. The biggest share of Godech Municipality falls within the range of 0.82 – 0.96 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ with restricted areas around the villages of Barlya, Smolcha, Gubesh, Murgash and Varbnitsa that may accumulate between 0.96 – 1.11 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. In conclusion, carbon accumulation only from natural forest regrowth provides representative information, however it would have been better if different plantation techniques were regarded as well. The successful results of the investigation should encourage other studies of this type in the neighbouring municipalities.

The reference constituted of bark, timber, stem, branches and leaves dry biomass of 168 sample trees aged 6−96 from 56 alder stands located in the western part of Kotlina Sandomierska (south−eastern Poland). The analysed formulas, considering local conditions, resulted in biased biomass calculations. The evaluation of such components as leaves, branches, trunk timber or trunk bark is subject to systematic errors larger than a dozen or so per cent, and in certain ranges of breast height diameters − up to even a couple of dozens or a few hundred per cent. Only three out of 30 formulas may be considered useful for estimating aboveground biomass of black alder in Poland.

Opis:
Activity of soil dehydrogenase (DHA) was measured in the mineral soil in a forest stand of 15 to 16-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from geographically diverse populations, as an indicator of biological activity of soil microorganisms, in a provenance experiment in Poland. The pine populations originated from six European countries (Sweden, Russia, Latvia, Poland, Germany, France) and differed widely in aboveground biomass and productivity. Soil DHA during two growing seasons showed pronounced seasonal variability, which was significantly related to the fine root concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates. Higher DHA was found in soil under canopies of the central and southern European populations than in those from more northern parts of the Scots pine range. Significant positive correlation between soil DHA and aboveground tree biomass suggest that these patterns most likely resulted from differences in carbon dynamics and productivity among populations.

Opis:
Największymi plonami świeżej i suchej masy części nadziemnej charakteryzowały się odmiany Accent, Concerta, Bardena i Radena, a w przypadku plonów korzeni – Accent, Radena, Bardena i Concerta. Najsilniejszy efekt antymątwikowy wykazały odmiany Bardena, Rota, Accent, Sirola i Radena. Lata badań miały istotny wpływ na badane parametry plonowania. W 2010 roku, przy największym zagęszczeniu mątwika w glebie i najmniejszej masie korzeni gorczycy białej, stwierdzono najmniejszy efekt antymątwikowy.
Field studies carried out on light loamy sand in 2008–2010 were aimed to compare fresh and dry yields of above-ground and root biomass and antinematode (Globodera rostochiensis) effect of ten white mustard varieties: Accent, Bamberka, Bardena, Barka, Concerta, Metex, Nakielska, Radena, Rota and Sirola grown as the main crop. The varieties significantly differed in both yields and anti-nematode activity. The biggest above-ground biomass (both fresh and dry) was produced by the Accent variety and by Concerta, Bardena and Radena. In the case of roots the order was: Accent, Radena, Bardena and Concerta. Above-ground plant yields were proportional to plant heights. The total fresh mass yield of white mustard corresponded to 51–71% of the mean dose of cattle manure (35 t·haˉ¹) applied under potatoes. All examined white mustard varieties limited the density of potato cyst nematodes in the soil. Most pronounced reduction of potato cyst nematodes was observed for Bardena, Rota, Accent, Sirola and Radena varieties. The years of studies influenced the investigated parameters of yielding. The least important antinematode effect was recorded in the year 2010 of the highest nematode density in soil and the smallest root yield of white mustard.

Wprowadzenie lucerny do mieszanki istotnie zwiększyło plon białka z jednostki powierzchni. W porównaniu do siewu czystego festulolium plon białka mieszanek wzrósł o ok. 61-80%. Wysoce istotne współczynniki korelacji dowodzą, że indeks zieloności liści można uznać za ważny wskaźnik prognozowania wielkości plonowania roślin oraz plonu uzyskanego białka.
The aim of the study was to determine the effects of different proportions of Medicago media Pers. in mixtures with Festulolium braunii (K. Richt.) A. Camus on the yield of aboveground biomass, protein yield and relative chlorophyll content in festulolium leaves. The study was carried out in 2011-2013. A strict field experiment was conducted at the Educational and Research Station of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland), on mineral soil of quality class IVa and very good rye complex. Pure-sown festulolium and festulolium in mixtures with hybrid alfalfa were investigated. The experimental factor was a varied proportion (30, 50, 70%) of alfalfa seeds in the mixtures. The results demonstrated that the proportion of alfalfa in mixtures increased gradually in subsequent years, but its share in the aboveground biomass was greater to the percentage of seeds sown. Alfalfa introduced as a component of the mixtures increased the relative chlorophyll content in festulolium leaves, but no significant differences were found between plots with 30 and 50% proportions of alfalfa. The mixtures gave significantly higher yields when compared to pure-sown festulolium. Depending on the proportion of alfalfa in the mixtures, the yield was about 40 to 46% higher and more reliable in the study years. The introduction of alfalfa to the mixtures caused a significant 61-80% increase in protein yield per area unit as compared to puresown festulolium. The high values of the correlation coefficients demonstrate that the leaf greenness index is an important predictor of plant yield and protein yield.

Opis:
In the years 2010-2012 the effect of plant density was studied on the yield of the aboveground parts and tubers of Polish cultivars of Jerusalem artichoke, Albik and Rubik. The experiment was carried out on a light soil of a good rye complex in a randomized block design. The experimental factors included: I) Jerusalem artichoke cultivars: Albik, Rubik, II) plant density: 2, 4, 6, 8 plants·mˉ². Cvs. Albik and Rubik, on average over the three years of research, did not differ in the dry matter yield of the aboveground parts and tubers. In the year with a higher rainfall total during growing season, cv. Albik gave higher yields, while in the year with a dry spell from July to September, cv. Rubik yielded higher. With a density of 6 and 8 plants·mˉ² the dry matter yield of the aboveground parts was significantly higher compared with a density of 2 plants·mˉ². The lowest tuber yield was obtained at a density of 2 plants·mˉ², a significantly higher one at a density of 4 plants·mˉ². Increasing plant density from 4 to 6 or 8 plants·mˉ² did not result in an increase in the tuber yield. Increasing density from 2 or 4 plants·mˉ² to 6 or 8 plants·mˉ² caused a decrease in the number and weight of tubers per plant as well as in the average weight of a single tuber.
W latach 2010-2012 badano wpływ obsady roślin na plon masy nadziemnej i bulw polskich odmian topinamburu Albik i Rubik. Doświadczenie realizowano na glebie lekkiej kompleksu żytniego dobrego, w układzie losowanych bloków. Czynnikami w doświadczeniu były: I) odmiana topinamburu: Albik, Rubik, II) obsada roślin: 2, 4, 6, 8 szt.·mˉ². W roku o wyższej sumie opadów w okresie wegetacji wyżej plonowała odmiana Albik, natomiast w roku z okresem posusznym do lipca do września lepiej plonowała odmiana Rubik.
