Was the Boer Republic of Natalia a state? The article discusses the question of whether the Natalia Republic was a state. Through the presentation of its history, its institutions and mechanisms of functioning, the author tries to present the character of this polity. He shows that in this case, one may observe the coexistence of institutions typical of the modern state and pre-state polities. This leads him to the conclusion that the Republic of Natalia was an unfinished project, and idea of a state, but not a state in the true sense of the word.

This study offers a short introduction to the development of cities in general, their types, functions, position and points of differentiation. It stresses the importance of multifarious factors that determine the importance of particular entities. The main part of the study though is concerned with Polish cities. It takes into consideration their origins, geographical location, administrative and political importance, city reforms, demographic and economic factors as well as their functions and finance to assess the role and salience of different city categories. It analyses the impact of the aforementioned factors, especially of administrative and self-government reforms on self-government reforms, reflecting the international trend towards the unification of self-government system, have not led to the homogenization of cities in Poland, but that provisions introduced allow for individualisation of their internal structures and functions.

December 12, 2016 a group of eleven first-year students of history organized at the Institute of History of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland) participated in the field work carried out in the church Roman Catholic parish of St. Jacob the Apostle in Toruń. During a visit in the temple the students performed an exercised to draw their attention: generally to the role of the imagination in the practice of the historian’s research and training his own imagination in whole live. First, the authoress described a process of the exercise. Then she briefly pointed to the literature on the role of the imagination. Later she discussed the work that have arisen in the result of the exercise. Next she characterized the thoughts and impressions of students. She also outlinedthe importance of this exercise in a broader context. At the end she summed up the whole article.

Selected concepts of the region in Polish sociologyThe aim of this article is to present the most important concepts of region in Polish sociology. It is also description of inspirations derived from XIX centuries ethnography and as well as sociology which focused its attention on regions before World War II. Early concepts developed by historiography and ethnology, that underlined such differentiators of region as social awareness and distinct folk culture, were used in sociology which developed in the interwar period in Poland. After World War II the most of sociological studies of regions based on definitions of a phenomenon which described it as a private homeland of regional community that is integrated by regional identity. Such community lives at a territory which is a type of physical container for identity and culture. A region is physical space in which a regional community meets its needs, it is a concept of region used by an inclusive and Marxist version of modernization theory. The first concepts mentioned above emphasized regional awareness superstructured on regional patterns of satisfying needs, while the latter objectively existing structure of a regional economy and society.  Recently an institutional perspective has been developed. Such theoretical perspective makes us see a region in terms of relational qualities of regional space, institutions, society and created in public discourse symbols and myths. Wybrane koncepcje regionu w socjologii polskiej Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie najważniejszych koncepcji regionu w polskiej socjologii. To również opis inspiracji pochodzących z XIX-wiecznej etnografii oraz socjologii, zainteresowała się regionem jeszcze przed II wojną światową. Wczesne koncepcje rozwinięte przez historię i etnologię, podkreślające takie wyróżniki regionu jak społeczna świadomość oraz specyficzna ludowa kultura, używane były przez rozwijającą się w okresie międzywojennym socjologię. Po drugiej wojnie światowej większość socjologicznych studiów nad regionem wykorzystywała koncepcję regionu, w której definiowano go jako prywatną ojczyznę regionalnej społeczności, która integrowana jest przez regionalną tożsamość. Taka zbiorowość zamieszkuje terytorium traktowane jako fizyczny pojemnik tożsamości i kultury. Region to przestrzeń fizyczna, na której regionalna zbiorowość zaspokaja swoje potrzeby, to koncepcja regionu wykorzystywana przez integralną i marksistowską wersję teorii modernizacji. Pierwsze ze wspomnianych ujęć podkreślało ważność regionalnej świadomości nadbudowanej nad regionalnymi wzorami zaspokajania potrzeb, drugie obiektywnie istniejące struktury regionalnej gospodarki i zbiorowości. Ostatnio rozwija się perspektywa instytucjonalna, która każe widzieć region w kategoriach relacyjnych związków przestrzeni, instytucji, zbiorowości regionalnej oraz wytwarzanych w publicznym dyskursie symboli i mitów.

The publication is focused around seven significant topics: Free Time; Self-presentation; Education; Revolutionary Attributes; Weapons, Banners, Signs; Religious Symbols; Memory Objects, with the objects being presented via images and short descriptions. The central approach used to introduce the objects is anthropological. It establishes the main code for deciphering the meaning of the artifacts – a glimpse into history through the medium of the personal story and moments that have been preserved in human memory. The book is an original Bulgarian response to A History of the World in 100 Objects by Neil MacGregor (2011).

Jest ona podzielona na siedem rozdziałów: Czas wolny; Autoprezentacja; Atrybuty Rewolucji; Broń, chorągwie, znaki; Symbole religijne; Obiekty pamięci. Artefakty są prezentowane w postaci fotografii i krótkich tekstów. Antropologiczne podejście do prezentacji przedmiotów ma na celu dotarcie do głębszego znaczenia artefaktów. W ten sposób odbiorca może zapoznać się z elementami minionej epoki za pomocą osobistych historii i chwil, które pozostały w zbiorowej pamięci. Książka stanowi oryginalną bułgarską odpowiedź na A History of the World in 100 Objects Neila MacGregor.

The reflections presented in this article are devoted to Junko Theresa Mikuriya’s book, A History of Light. The Idea of Photography. It is a unique view on the search for pre-photographic origins of photography in the field of philosophical writings ranging from Plato, through the neoplatonic philosopher Jamblich’s enquiry, to the texts by Philotheus of Batos and by an early Renaissance philosopher, Marsilio Ficino. When thinking about metaphysics present in (moving and still) images, one should not forget about the metaphysics of the image itself. The idea of photography – regardless of whether we are witnessing a fundamental change in an ontological transition from an analogue to a digital form of image recording – obliges us to discuss the “history of light”, as this is what Mikuriya does. While locating the discussed concepts in the context of the history and theory of photography, as well as the archaeology of media, the author of this essay engages in a dialogue with Mikuriya and polemically discusses many of her hypotheses. Key concepts such as chalepon, photagogia, triton genos, phôteinographeisthai are analysed in order to indicate inspiring moments in the Mikuriya’s reflections, but also a kind of interpretive abuse in the process of reading and analysing philosophical texts addressing the issues of light.

The article discusses the history of the last monks from the Sieciechów Benedictine monastery after its dissolution in 1819. The basic source material for this research included personal files of the monks and secular clergy, the records concerning the work and death of the priests held in the Diocesan Archive in Sandomierz. The reconstruction of the history of the last Benedictines from Sieciechów shows that following the suppression of the monastery, most of them conducted pastoral work in the parishes situated in a few dioceses which existed at the time. The last monks died as administrators of the church in Łysa Góra. The following article constitutes a starting point for further research on the history of the Benedictines from Sieciechów as well as all monks in the period of the 19th-century dissolution of monasteries.
Artykuł omawia losy ostatnich zakonników klasztoru benedyktynów w Sieciechowie po kasacie opactwa w 1819 r. Podstawowym materiałem źródłowym dla badań w tym zakresie były teczki personalne duchowieństwa oraz akta konduit i stanu służby kapłanów przechowywane w zasobie Archiwum Diecezjalnego w Sandomierzu. Rekonstrukcja losów ostatnich benedyktynów sieciechowskich dowiodła, że większość z nich po supresji opactwa podjęła pracę duszpasterską w ośrodkach parafialnych, położonych na terenie kilku ówcześnie istniejących diecezji. Trzech byłych zakonników zakończyło swój żywot jako administratorzy kościoła na Łysej Górze. Artykuł w swym założeniu stanowi punkt wyjścia do dalszych badań nad dziejami benedyktynów z Sieciechowa, jak też szerzej nad problematyką losów duchowieństwa zakonnego w okresie XIX-wiecznych kasat klasztornych.

The term ‘politics of history’ can be encountered in the narratives created by three distinct types of social practice: (1) the social practice of research (‘politics of history’ is the subject of the research, and not the practice); (2) the social practice of politics (‘politics of history’ is practiced, and may be either an instrument for gaining and retaining power, and/or an instrument for realising the state’s raison d’état); (3) the social practice of memory (where the practice of ‘politics of history’ also has a place, and is synonymous with ‘politics of memory’). The author argues that political raison d’état requires Poland to pursue an active politics of history which should be addressed abroad, and proposes that its guiding ideas should be based on three grand narratives: (1) the fundamental role of ‘Solidarity Poland’ in the peaceful dismantling of the post-Yalta system in Europe, (2) the Europe of the Jagiellonians, and (3) the Europe of the Vasas, as constructs simultaneously geopolitical and civilisational, in which Poland performed an agential function.

The article is devoted to history of formation and functioning of Russian word grief. Historical dictionaries and Old Russian texts XI-XVII centuries (hagiography) are sources of the materiał. The lexical units ‘state of mind’ were polysemantic in old Russian (3-12 meanings). As a result of the long use of polysemantic words in Old Russian texts there is a lexico-semantic group ‘state of mind’ and modern direct sense of the word grief.

This paper analyses the population censuses on the Polish area, particularly, the subject of censuses and their thematic scope. the study refers to the censuses in the 19th and 20th centuries (the study closes with the 1988 census). The paper consists of three parts. The first one presents the origins of censuses and the first censuses conducted in Europe in the 18th century. This part also shows the efforts of international statistical institutions to normalise and standardise national censuses. It allowed for building international standards to make national censuses comparable. The second part shows censuses in the 19th century, and the third part discusses censuses in the 20th century. A fundamental feature of the censuses is a set of questions common to demographic and social issues. This makes it possible to carry out comparative analysis in different regional cross-sections on a secular basis. It should also be provided that census categories are not always comparable, hence various conversions and estimates are necessary. The universality of the censuses have made them a huge organizational challenge each time. The greatest effort was borne by the statistical institutions responsible, not only for conducting the censuses, but also during the compilation and publication of the data.

In my paper I try to formulate four crucial points with regard to the history of historiography as a specifi c subdiscipline of historical studies. (1) Th e distinctive character of the history of historiography is not founded on the subject that it analyses. (2) Th is distinctive character is mainly founded on the variety and number of theoretical approaches to the writing of history, i.e., its tradition so far. (3) Th e historical development of the history of historiography does not follow a successive transition from one paradigm to another but is stratifi ed instead. (4) A basic model to understand that development is provided by Nietzsche’s distinction between the monumental, antiquarian and critical forms of history. This article constitutes an attempt at creating a definition of copyright classification within the Polish legal system of oral history accounts. The author answers the questions of whether an oral history account is a scholarly work; who the author of such an account is; and what conditions need to be met in order for a person to be considered the author of the account in the context of copyright law. He discusses which copyright laws relate to such accounts, who holds the copyright to accounts, and what the scope of the copyright encompasses. The author also outlines the manner in which the issue of copyright law in practice affects the activities of institutions concerned with collecting and archiving oral history accounts.
Artykuł jest próbą określenia autorskoprawnej kwalifikacji relacji oral history w polskim systemie prawnym. Autor odpowiada na pytania: czy relacja oral history jest utworem, kim jest autor relacji oraz jakie przesłanki należy spełnić, aby stać się autorem relacji w rozumieniu prawa autorskiego; z jakimi autorskimi prawami mamy do czynienia w przypadku relacji; kto dysponuje prawami autorskimi do relacji i w jakim zakresie;  w jaki sposób kwestia praw autorskich funkcjonuje w praktyce działań instytucji zajmujących się zbieraniem i archiwizowaniem relacji oral history.

A contribution to the history of modifiers of time. The 24-hour span of time in the description of 16th-century memoirists The present article is devoted to the selected determiners of time in the early Polish language. The author studies the indication of time within a 24-hour span of time, documented in 16th-century memoirs. In the analysis one may distinguish two groups of temporal constructions. The first one is associated with the ways in which a point of time is indicated (przed godziną wtórą a dwudziestą; raniuczko, skoro ze dniem; trzy godziny po miesiącu); another one is associated with the indication of the duration of an action/state (np. pół ćwierci godziny). In the evolution of the perception of the world it is above all the changes imposed by the development of science and technology that are relevant – in this case the means of measuring time and space.
