Lucjan Rydel authored a dramatic trilogy about King Sigismund II Augustus. He described the 16th century with great erudition as regards the material and political history of the period. He had studied numerous historical records as well as scholarly works. He also wrote an academic essay on Charles de Nassau. The main areas of his interest in history were texts of didactic and popular character. He wrote a monograph entitled Queen Hedwig, where he collected the themes of female rule in literature and art. He published brochures on buildings of historical interest in Krakow, Warsaw and Vilnius. He brought out A Short History of Poland and History of Poland for Everybody, both of which were written during the Great War. His ambition was to write accessible textbooks on the history of the Polish nation and Polish state with a view to boosting the patriotism of Poles. In matters of ideology, his works were leaning towards conservative views.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono sylwetkę ostatniego Jagiellona – króla Zygmunta Augusta. Za czasów jego panowania utworzono Rzeczpospolitą Obojga Narodów, prowadzono politykę tolerancji religijnej. Jednak po śmierci ukochanej żony Barbary Radziwiłłówny król załamał się i podupadł na zdrowiu. Przyczynił się do tego w znacznym stopniu rozwiązły tryb życia, jaki zaczął prowadzić. W otoczeniu króla pełno było osób, które na królewskim nałogu widziały szanse na zbicie majątku. Takim przykładem jest rodzina Mniszchów, która sprowadziła na dwór Barbarę Giżankę, młodą mieszczką przypominająca Barbarę Radziwiłłównę.

Opis:
The objective of the present article is to reveal what food products were used in the cuisine of King Sigismund II Augustus and what were the ways of their supply when the Ruler resided in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania according to the data in the court account books of 1543–1546. The following issues will be addressed in the article: the supply of meat to the court kitchen of Sigismund II Augustus and its use; the consumption and supply of fish; the consumption of dairy products and eggs; bread, cereals, and sweet baked products on the Ruler’s menu; the assortment of vegetables and fruits; a variety of spices and their supply; the consumption of beverages.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza danych zawartych w księgach rachunkowych z lat 1543–1546, w celu ukazania, jakich produktów spożywczych używano w kuchni królewskiej podczas pobytów Zygmunta II Augusta w Wielkim Księstwie Litewskim oraz sposobów ich pozyskiwania. Prezentowane źródła pozwalają na ustalenie wielkości dostaw i poziomu spożycia mięsa i ryb w kuchni tego władcy, a także oszacowanie wielkości spożycia nabiału, chleba, kasz, słodkich wypieków, warzyw, owoców, przypraw i napojów.

Die SBB PK verfügt über eine der umfangreichsten Sammlungen von Polonica in Deutschland. Seit Eröffnung der Bibliothek im Jahr 1661 sammelt sie umfassend Veröffentlichungen aus und über Polen mit dem Schwerpunkt im Bereich der polnischen Sprache, Literatur und Kultur, der deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen, sowie der jeweiligen Minderheiten in beiden Ländern. Diese historische Sammlungsentwicklung sowie die heutigen Aufgaben der SBB PK bei der Literatur- und Informationsversorgung der wissenschaftlichen Fachöffentlichkeit in Deutschland werden dargelegt. Wie die Geschichte beider Länder ist auch die Sammlungsentwicklung der SBB PK von zahlreichen Brüchen geprägt. Zur Erforschung eines dieser durch die NS-Herrschaft und den Zweiten Weltkrieg verursachten Brüche startete die SBB PK ein Programm zur Erforschung der Provenienzgeschichte von NS-verfolgungsbedingt entzogenen Büchersammlungen. In welchem Maße davon auch die Polonica-Sammlung der SBB PK betroffen ist, soll an Beispielen herausgearbeitet werden.
Biblioteka Państwowa w Berlinie – Fundacja Pruskiego Dziedzictwa Kulturowego dysponuje jedną z największych w Niemczech kolekcją poloników. Od otwarcia Biblioteki w roku 1661 gromadzone są w niej licznie publikacje dotyczące Polski, zwłaszcza z zakresu języka polskiego, literatury i kultury polskiej, na temat stosunków polsko- -niemieckich, jak również mniejszości narodowych w obydwu krajach. W niniejszym artykule został przedstawiony historyczny rozwój kolekcji poloników oraz obecne zadania Biblioteki w zakresie gromadzenia literatury tego typu i zapewnienia informacji o niej środowisku naukowemu w Niemczech. Tak jak na historię obydwu krajów, tak również na rozwój zbiorów berlińskiej Biblioteki miały wpływ liczne burze dziejowe. Aby zbadać jeden z tych okresów, związany z nazizmem i II wojną światową, Biblioteka rozpoczęła program badań proweniencyjnych dotyczących księgozbiorów zagrabionych przez nazistów w krajach okupowanych. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jakim zakresie ów problem dotyczy również kolekcji poloników Biblioteki.
The Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (SBB PK) has one of the most comprehensive collections of Polonica in Germany. Since the opening of the library in 1661, it has been comprehensively collecting publications from and about Poland with a special emphasis on Polish language, literature, and culture, German-Polish relations, and on the respective minorities in both countries. This historical collection development as well as the current tasks of the SBB PK in the field of literature and information supply of the scientific audience in Germany is presented. Like the history of both countries, SBB PK’s collection development is characterized by numerous breaches. To investigate one of these fractions, caused by the Nazi rule and World War II, the SBB PK started a programme of provenance research on the history of Nazi persecuted book collections. The extent to which the Polonica collection of the SBB PK is affected is to be illustrated by examples.

Barbara Radziwiłł, Sigismund II August's second wife, died in Krakow on 8 May 1551. Fulfilling the Queen's last wish to be buried in Vilnius the monarch first organized magnificentfuneral celebrations in Krakow, and next he went, along with a numerous procession, on a four-week funeral march to the capital of Lithuania, in order to celebrate the funeral ceremonies also there, and to bury his wife. The event has an interesting fiscal documentation – the royal accounts preserved in the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw. Although the sum that is recorded there (at the end of a chapter especially singled out and devoted to the funeral expenses only), designed to celebrations of Barbara Radziwiłł's funeral – more than 9416 florins – is well known in literature and has been quoted many times, analysis of the books of the Treasurer Office allows verifying it. The money was first of all designed for cloths, craftsmen's services and the religious setting during the stopovers of the procession in successive places, as well as for the expenses of the members of the Queen's court and the King's courtiers who took part in the procession. This sum, however, has to be complemented by the sums recorded in several other parts of the same account book, spent on the King's stopovers (1485 florins), and several expenses that were not recorded in the proper chapter (1476 florins), as well as the ones that were recorded in Tresurer Jan Lutomirski's separate accounts (1170) – totaling more than 4130 florins. If we also take into consideration the valid suggestion that has been advanced lately that the sum of at least 2521 florins should be added that were issued from the Hospodar's Treasury for the Queen's court, the total costs of Barbara Radziwiłł's funeral will reach the sum of about 16000 florins.
