Opis:
Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in various matrices have been the object of increasing interest due to their peculiar physical properties significantly different from the corresponding ones of bulk material. Metallic Zn NPs can be used in UV photo-detectors. Zinc oxide NPs play an important role too, since ZnO has direct band gap of 3.37eV, large exiton binding energy of 60meV, sorption effect, room temperature ferromagnetism and others. So they can be used in varies perspective electron devices. In this paper the optical parameters and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization of Zn implanted quartz during NP formation at annealing are reported.Optical-grade high-pure (OH-: 50ppb) amorphous quartz slides were implanted by 64Zn+ ions with fluence of 5×1016/cm2 and energy of 50keV. To avoid the magnificent substrate heating during implantation the ion current density was less than 0.5μA/cm2. Than the samples were subjected to isochronally during 1h oxidation in temperature ranges from 400 up to 800oC. The Zn contained phase creation and its thermal evolution were investigated by recording the optical transmittance spectra at room temperature in a spectral range of 200-800nm and by photoluminescence at temperatures of 10-300K in a spectral range of 350-800nm using an illumination of He-Cd laser with wavelength of 325nm. Visualization and identification of NPs was made by study of the cross section samples TEM fitted with electron diffraction, an EDAX detector attachment for X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and with a high angle annular dark field detector (HAADF) for scanning operation. The EDS maps of the element distribution and the NP sizes were determined in the scanning TEM regime. As a result of these studies it was found that after the quartz implantation by 64Zn+ ions with fluence of 5×1016/cm2 and energy of 50keV the amorphous metallic Zn NPs with an average radius of 3 nm were created. During process of sequentially isochronally furnace annealing in oxygen atmosphere in 1h in temperature ranges from 400 up to 800oC in samples there was phase transformation from metallic Zn phase to its oxide form. After annealing at 800oC the Zn NPs transform to the ZnO or/and Zn2SiO4 phase with average radius of 4,5nm.

Purpose: The aim of the paper was to investigate the antifungal activity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) against Candida albicans. Some attempts have been made to find out the best way to introduce ZnONPs into polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin material and to determine some parameters of a newly formed composite. Material and methods: Zinc oxide nanoparticles were manufactured and their basic physical parameters were determined (average particle size, density, specific surface area). Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ZnONPs was determined for the Candida albicans standard strain. The average size of ZnO conglomerates in the monomer solution of PMMA resin was measured using a dynamic light scattering instrument. PMMA resin samples with incorporated ZnONPs were produced. The morphology of nanopowder and the newly formed composite was examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). In addition, the roughness parameter of PMMA resin material was investigated before and after ZnONPs modification. Results: Nanopowder with the average particle size of 30 nm, density of 5.24 g/cm3 and surface area of 39 m2 /g was obtained. MIC was determined at the level of 0.75 mg/mL. The average size of ZnO conglomerates in the monomer solution of acrylic resin dropped by 11 times after ultrasound activation. SEM examination of a newly formed composite showed a successful introduction of ZnONPs confirmed by the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. There were no statistically significant differences in the biomaterial roughness before and after the modification of ZnONPs. Conclusion: Zinc oxide nanoparticles were successfully incorporated into acrylic resin used for the production of denture bases. The presence of nanoparticles with sizes below 100 nm was confirmed. Nevertheless a newly created composite needs to be further investigated to improve its homogeneity, and to check its microbiological properties, strength and biocompatibility prior to its possible clinical use.

Opis:
Objectives Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are frequently detected in the environment but few studies have assessed the joint toxicity of them. Oxidative stress and apoptosis to zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos induced by the PFOS and ZnO-NPs were investigated in this study. Material and Methods The embryos were exposed to the PFOS (0, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 mg/l), ZnO-NPs (12.5, 25, 50 mg/l) and PFOS plus ZnO-NPs (0.4+12.5, 0.8+25 and 1.6+50 mg/l) mixture solutions until 96 h post-fertilization. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (Gpx) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were measured in zebrafish embryos after exposure lasting for 96 h. At the same time, the genes expression related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, oxidative damage and apoptosis were also measured. Results A significant induction of the ROS accompanied by the increase in the activity of the Gpx and MDA contents were found in co-treatment groups. Furthermore, several apoptosis pathway related genes such as Bax, p53, caspase-3 and caspase-9 were significantly up-regulated in the PFOS plus ZnO-NPs exposure groups, while anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-2 was significantly down-regulated in the PFOS plus ZnO-NPs exposure groups. In addition, some oxidative stress-related genes such as Cat, GSH peroxidase 1 (Gpx1a) and superoxide dismutase 1 (Sod1) were also significantly down-regulated after the PFOS plus ZnO-NPs co-treatments. Conclusions The results demonstrated that the PFOS plus ZnO-NPs co-exposure could cause more serious oxidative stress and apoptosis than the PFOS and ZnO-NPs exposure alone at the exposure concentrations above. The synergistic effects of the PFOS and ZnO-NPs may be the important mechanisms of their toxicity to zebrafish embryos. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(2):213–229

The presence of moderate amount of ZnO nanoparticles significantly reduced the S. epidermidis cells adhesion and viability of bacterial cells in contact with modified surfaces. However, higher amount of loaded nanoZnO showed the reduced antimicrobial properties than the medium amount, suggesting the overdose effect.

The melt-mixing method was used to obtain nanocomposites of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) with 1, 3 or 5 wt% of hydrophilic zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles. The contact angle, barrier and antimicrobial properties of the obtained composites were investigated. The nanocomposites were characterized by better hydrophilic and barrier properties, as evidenced by, respectively, a smaller contact angle and lower water vapor permeability and water absorption compared to EVA, which can be explained by the formation of hydrogen bonds between EVA and ZnO. In addition, the composites were characterized by greater bactericidal activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The optimal physical and microbial properties were obtained with 3 wt% ZnO content.

Zbadano kąt zwilżania, właściwości barierowe i przeciwdrobnoustrojowe otrzymanych kompozytów. Ponadto kompozyty miały większą aktywność bakteriobójczą wobec E. coli i S. aureus. Optymalny zespół właściwości uzyskano przy 3% mas. zawartości ZnO.

The aim of the present study was to develop a modifier for water glass. The method of thermal generation of metal oxide nanoparticles was adapted and used in the research. Nanoparticles of ZnO from the thermal decomposition of basic zinc carbonate were used. A method for the modifier introduction was developed, and the effect of modifier content and organic solvent type on the physico-chemical properties of binder (viscosity) and quartz wettability was determined. Binder viscosity was examined from the flow curves plotted with the help of a RHEOTEST 2 rotational rheometer equipped with proper software. Quartz wettability was determined examining time-related changes in the value of the contact angle in a quartz-binder system, until full stabilisation of the angle value has been achieved. Binder modification was carried out on sodium water glass designated as R"145". The water glass modifiers were suspensions of ZnO nanoparticles in propanol and methanol at a fixed concentration of c = 0.3 M and with the size of nanoparticles comprised in a range of <61 - 981 nm>. Water glass modification with the suspensions of ZnO nanoparticles in methanol and propanol showed the effect of modifier on the water glass viscosity and quartz wettability. This effect depends on the type of alcohol used. The ZnO suspension in propanol (alcohol with a longer hydrocarbon chain) affects more strongly the viscosity of binder and quartz wettability than the methanol suspension.

Opis:
In this paper, an attempt was made to use the ZnO nanoparticles as a modifier of foundry binder - water glass. The modifier was a colloidal suspension of the ZnO zinc oxide nanoparticles in propanol. A thermal method to obtain metal oxide nanoparticles was adopted. The modifier was product of the thermal decomposition of the basic zinc carbonate ([ZnCO3]2•[Zn(OH)2]3), and was introduced into the water glass in an amount of 1 and 3 wt%. To determine the interfacial reactions taking place in a quartz - modified water glass system, the binder wettability of the quartz grains was measured. The effect of water glass modification on the mechanical properties of moulding sands was verified by testing the tensile strength Rmu of moulding sands with the modified binders. Water glass modification with the colloidal solution of ZnO nanoparticles in propanol confirmed the effect of modifier on the water glass wettability of sand grains and on the mechanical properties of the sand mixtures with this additive.

The plant is rich in alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids and triterpenes. UV-Visible double beam spectrophotometric analysis was used for characterization of ZnO nanoparticles with different time intervals which were synthesized by plant extracts. The bio-reduction completes in two hr incubation of reaction mixtures with strong broad peaks at 332 nm from leaves, 296 nm from stem and 326 nm from flower extracts. Hence the biosynthesis of ZnO nanoparticles using aqueous extracts of P. edulis could be an alternative to chemical methods and exploited in various biofields.

In this research antimicrobial activity of nanoparticles ZnO on perilous bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa was evaluated. P. aeruginosa is important pathogen that caused burn wound infections as it is multi-drug resistant and has several virulence factors. Fifteen samples of P. aeruginosa were collected from patients who suffering from Burn infections in Al-Hilla teaching hospital burn unit with the age range between (7-80) years old for both genders. After collecting burn samples, the diagnosis and characterization were performed by culturing and biochemical tests. ZnO NPs were synthesized by chemical method, Zinc oxide nanoparticles are well-known to be one of the multifunctional inorganic compounds which are widely used in medical applications. This study aims to prepare ZnO nanoparticles with particle size ranging from 23-29  nm. In the present study, surface modification of ZnO nanoparticles was performed, and influence of modification of the structure and morphological properties was investigated. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force (AFM). Zinc oxide nanoparticles with the average diameter of about 29 nm were modified with an oleic acid to exert more compatibility. From the results obtained it is suggested that modified ZnO-nanoparticles could be used effectively in safety environmental and medical applications. Antibacterial activity for nanoparticle ZnO against P. aeruginosa isolates was measured by: Agar Diffusion Technique and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)/Minimum bactericidal Concentration (MBC) with microdilution. The best zone of inhibition was (35.5mm) at a concentration of 40 μg/ml of nano-ZnO in one strain of P. aeruginosa while the lowest inhibition zone was (16 mm) at a concentration of 20 μg/ml of nano ZnO in one strain also. In addition, all P. aeruginosa isolates were completely inhibited at the concentration of 3.7 μg/ml of nano-ZnO (MIC) but no significant antibacterial activity was observed at concentrations less than 1.8 μg/ml of nano-ZnO and the (MBC) was same as MIC (3.7 μg/ml) for all P.aeruginosa isolates.

The densities of the nanorods were obtained by means of atomic force microscope (AFM) images. SEM images and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the hexagonal wurtzite structure of the nanorods. Photoluminescence measurements proved the good quality of the samples. Afterwards an atomic layer deposition (ALD) method was used to grow ZnO:Al (AZO) layer on top of the nanorods as a transparent electrode and ohmic Au contacts were deposited onto the silicon substrate. For the solar cells prepared in that manner the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics before and after the illumination were measured and their basic performance parameters were determined. It was found that the spectral characteristics of a quantum efficiency exhibit an increase for short wavelengths and this behavior has been linked with the plasmonic effect.
