Opis:
This work describes the design of bi-functional α-Fe2O3/Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ using a two-step coating process. We propose a combination of pigments (α-Fe2O3) and phosphor (Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ ) glaze which is assembled using a layer-by-layer method. A silica-coated α-Fe2O3 pigment was obtained by a sol-gel method and a Zn2+ precursor was then added to the silica-coated α-Fe2O3 to create a ZnO layer. Finally, the Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ layer was prepared with the addition of Mn2+ ions to serve as a phosphor precursor in the multi-coated α-Fe2O3, followed by annealing at a temperature above 1000°C. Details of the phase structure, color and optical properties of the multi-functional α-Fe2O3/Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses.

Opis:
Affinity chromatography on Chelating Sepharose Fast Flow Gel-Zn2+ was used for fractionation of boar seminal plasma proteins. Approximately 30% of total boar seminal plasma proteins showed affinity for zinc ions (ZnBP fraction). Native electrophoresis (PAGE) of ZnBP revealed six protein fractions which separated into 27 bands under denaturing conditions (SDS/PAGE). Two-dimensional electrophoresis (2D PAGE) showed 148 polypeptides with isoelectric points mostly in the basic and neutral pH range. The zinc-binding proteins comprise mainly 10-20 kDa polypeptides which are probably members of the spermadhesin family. ZnBP present in the incubation mixture of spermatozoa stored for 1 or 24 h at 4 °C allowed preservation of a higher percentage of cells exhibiting linear motility in comparison to a control sample stored in PBS. Presented results indicate that proteins binding Zn2+ ions have a shielding effect on the sperm plasma membrane and acrosome of spermatozoa, protecting these structures against consequences of cold shock.

Opis:
The zinc leaching filter cake residue as a secondary resource is used for hydrometallurgical lead production from brine (chloride) media. In this method, zinc accumulation caused decrease in the lead leaching efficiency in feed solution as well as a defective cycle flowsheet in production process. Therefore, an experiment was designed for the solvent extraction (SX) of zinc from brine solution after lead cementation stage. The results indicated that approximately 98% zinc with a little contamination of other metals was extracted under optimum conditions (193.5 g.dm-3 of D2EHPA in kerosene as diluent, pH=3.5, contact time=5 min, temperature=40±2 °C and aqueous: organic ratio (A:O)=1:1). Also, according to the differences of ∆pH0.5 and separation factor values among Zn and other ions, D2EHPA as an organophosphorous extractant has suitable capability for zinc selective extraction from brine solution. Moreover, H2SO4 solution which was used for stripping to transfer Zn2+ ions to zinc conventional production sulphate media achieved high efficiency of 99%. McCabe-Thiele diagram was simulated to counter-current extraction route. The results showed that two stages were needed for both extraction and stripping.

Low molecular mass, heparin-binding proteins from seminal plasma play an important role in gametes interaction whereas plasmatic Zn^{2+}-binding proteins stabilize chromatin and plasmalemma structures and protect spermatozoa in the female reproductive tract. By means of affinity chromatography the heparin- and Zn^{2+}-binding proteins were isolated from boar seminal plasma and both preparations were analyzed by reverse HPLC. Most of the proteins bound to heparine and Zn^{2+}-ions were classified as spermadhesins. Three fractions binding exclusively Zn^{2+} were isolated. They differ in amino-acid composition, content of glucosamine and content of protein components revealed by SDS/PAGE.

Opis:
The report presents research efforts on the synthesis of Zn/MoS2 composite coatings by electrochemical reduction from a sulphate-borate bath containing MoS2 powder as a dispersion phase at various concentrations. The structure of the Zn/MoS2 composite coatings was characterised and the effect of MoS2 particles embedded on their microhardness was evaluated. The coatings produced are characterized by a compact, homogeneous structure and a good connection to a steel substrate. The incorporation of MoS2 particles into the zinc matrix has an influence on the structure and morphology of the Zn/MoS2 composite coatings. It was found that the presence of MoS2 particles increases surface roughness along with coating hardness. The incorporation of the MoS2 particles into the zinc matrix slightly improves the corrosion resistance compared to Zn coatings, making the corrosion potential shift towards more electropositive values.

Opis:
In the last 30 years, no new class of antibiotic was developed, and resistance to these already existing has increased dramatically. It seems reasonable to search for new classes therapeutics, targeting metabolic pathways, which standard therapies do not aim at. One of the biggest obstacles in finding effective and specific antibacterial and antifungal agents, which do not cause serious side effects in patients, is due to the fact that micro-organisms share many basic metabolic pathways with their human hosts. One of the significant differences may be the transport system and homeostasis of Zn2+ and Ni2+. The review sheds new light on the homeostasis of the two metals in bacteria and fungi. The main points are: (i) determination of Zn2+ binding sites on the C. albicans Pra1 zincophore and in the N-terminal domain of the C. albicans Zrt1 zinc transporter; description of the geometry and thermodynamics of such binding (Fig. 5 and 6); (ii) understanding of the bioinorganic chemistry of zincophore based Zn2+ transport (understanding Pra1-Zrt1 interactions); suggesting how Zn2+ is delivered from the zincophore to the zinc transporter (Fig. 7); (iii) defining the specificity of zincophore-based transport; showing that they can also transport Ni2+ ions; (iv) pointing out Zn2+ binding sites on amylin1-19 and pramlintide – amylin’s non-aggregating analogue; describing the thermodynamics of the process (Fig. 10) and suggesting the potential effect of Zn2+ coordination on the antimicrobial effectiveness of amylin (Fig. 11 and 12); (v) defining how the non-coordinating poly- Gln region affect the structure and how it increases the thermodynamic stability of nickel complexes of the N-terminal region Hpn-like, a microbial Ni2+ storage protein (Fig. 13); (vi) indicating the specific regions of proteins with polyHis and polyGln regions, which are most likely to bind Ni2+ and Zn2+; (vii) explaining the effect of pH and Ni2+ binding to the N-terminal domain of HypA, a bacterial protein involved in the maturation of hydrogenase (Fig. 14 and 15); (viii) explaining the average efficiency and selectivity of HupE, a bacterial Ni2+ transporter (Fig. 16 and 17). This new piece of knowledge is an interesting contribution to the beautiful, basic bioinorganic chemistry, which allows for a better understanding of basic mechanisms in biology and can be the basis in the design of effective, specific and selective drugs to be used in anti-microbial therapy, e.g. of traditional drugs combined with a part of a zincophore, which is specifically recognized by the fungus. First biological studies, which show that Candida albicans recognizes the C-terminal region Pra1, have already been carried out (see Figure 8 and its description).

Opis:
As a solid waste, the associated disposal cost of fly ash is really high. Previous studies suggested that the utilization of fly ash to treat heavy metal-contaminated soils was a new cost-effective method of disposal of it. Therefore, the effectiveness of fly ash stabilized/solidified Zn-contaminated soils has been investigated by unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) tests. Quantitative analysis of the soil microstructure was conducted by processing the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) was carried out to illustrate the size and proportion of pore size for specimens under different ratios. The results of the tests showed an improvement in the UCS, which further increased as the content of binders was raised. Binder content would have little influence on the development of strength if the binder content exceeds a threshold value. The leached Zn2+ concentration of stabilized specimens was significantly decreased compared to that of untreated. Quantitative analysis confirmed that the addition of the binders resulted in the amount of hydration product, reduction of porosity, and a really random pores orientation, which was responsible for the improvement of the strength and leaching properties of the Zn2+ contaminated soils.

Alloys of nominal composition Mg-3Zn-xCa (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.3) wt.% have been prepared by resistance melting and casting into graphite mould under argon atmosphere. All investigated alloys have revealed α(Mg) dendritic microstructures with intermetallic phases distributed in interdendritic spacing. The Mg4Zn7 has been identified as the main phase which coexists with α(Mg) in the Mg-Zn alloy. Calcium addition causes the formation of ternary Ca2Mg6Zn3 hexagonal phase, denoted also as Ca3MgxZn15-x . The increase of Mg/Zn ratio from 0.59 in Mg-3Zn-0.2Ca wt.% alloy to 2.72 in Mg-3Zn-1.3Ca wt.% alloy in this phase is connected with an increase in the lattice parameters. The microhardness of the Ca containing alloys increases up to 67 HV (for the alloy containing 1.3 wag.% Ca) compared to the 50 HV for Mg-3Zn wt.% alloy.
Stopy o składach Mg-3Zn-xCa (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.3) %wag. topiono w piecu oporowym w atmosferze argonu i odlano do tygla grafitowego.

Colonization of surfaces of materials by bacteria can be a source of infection, as well as an obstacle for the proper functioning of some of the biomedical equipment. Preparation of anti-bacterial coating may be an effective method of protecting of the surface prior to colonization by the bacteria. In this paper, modified SiO2 coating have been prepared by the sol-gel method on glass and stainless steel substrates. As the precursor of sols tetraethoxysilan (TEOS) was used. The properties of sols were modified using additives of methyltrimethoxysilan (MTMS) and zinc nitrate. Antibacterial properties of coatings were determined by examining of their susceptibility to colonization by the bacteria Escherichia coli. It was found that the addition of zinc nitrate reduces the risk of bacterial colonization and hydrophobicity is not essential to the level of E. coli colonization.

In the present paper, the analysis of SEM and EDS results of porous and enriched in calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper and phosphorus coatings, obtained during 3-minute treatments performed by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO)/Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) processes on CP Titanium Grade 2, is presented. The PEO process was carried out at DC potentials of 500 VDC, 575 VDC, and 650 VDC in electrolytes containing 125 g Ca(NO3)2•4H2O, and 125 g Mg(NO3)2∙6H2O, and 125 g Zn(NO3)2∙6H2O, and 125 g Cu(NO3)2∙3H2O in 1 L H3PO4. It was found that obtained coatings have pores with different shapes and diameters and/or size/dimentions. The Ca/P, Mg/P, Zn/P, Cu/P, and M/P ratios (M=Ca+Mg+Zn+Cu) were equal to 0.074, 0.046, 0.056, 0.042, and 0.218, respectively. The highest value of each of these ratios was recorded for 650 VDC. It may be concluded that the obtained PEO coatings structures most likely are similar to hydroxyapatite-like structures, in which the Ca2+ may be replaced with Zn2+, Mg2+, Cu2+.
