Opis:
In this study, the surface roughness of galvannealed low carbon Al-killed and Ti-Nb stabilized interstitial free steels was investigated using the industrial galvannealing process parameters. The iron content of the coatings was also analysed to establish a relationship with the surface roughness and coating composition. The surface roughness displayed an exponential behaviour with increasing of annealing time at each annealing temperature in both steel coatings, which was in an increasing order in the galvannealed low carbon Al-killed steel coating, whereas it was a reverse order in the galvannealed Ti-Nb stabilized interstitial free steel coating. The craters were observed on the galvannealed coatings resulting in high surface roughness. Increasing the iron content of the coatings leads to a reduction in the surface roughness with δ1k phase.

The activity of Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase in the fluid obtained from eye lens capsules after cataract surgery was investigated in samples obtained from patients with senile cataract and with senile cataract combined with diabetes mellitus. Two parameters were measured and compared: the frequency of occurrence of detected superoxide dismutase activity and the relative activity of the enzyme in samples derived from senile cataract patients versus those from the patiens affected additionally by diabetes mellitus. It was confirmed that the decrease of superoxide dismutase activity during cataract was additionally promoted by diabetes mellitus.

Opis:
In order to remove the harmful metal ions in lead-zinc mineral processing wastewater, two natural clay minerals (bentonite and kaolin) were used as adsorbents and Zn(II) ions were the emphasis in this work. The adsorption behaviors including kinetics and isotherms were investigated by batch experiments. In addition, the adsorption mechanisms were studied by means of zeta potential testing, optical microscope and XRD analysis. The results show that the adsorption process can be best described as the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The adsorption equilibrium data of bentonite and kaolinite can be respectively fitted best by Langmuir and Freundlich models. Thermodynamic studies display that the adsorption of Zn(II) onto clays is non-spontaneous and endothermic. The maximum capacity of Zn(II) adsorbed on bentonite and kaolinite respectively reaches to 79.2 mg·g-1 and 6.35 mg·g-1 at 25 °C. The structural differences of bentonite and kaolinite result in the differences in adsorption behavior and mechanism. The interaction mechanisms of Zn(II) with bentonite and kaolinite involve electrostatic attraction, cation exchange, surface complex and precipitation. Bentonite as adsorbent has the potential to remove Zn2+ better than kaolinite.

Opis:
This paper reports the application of poly(azomethinethioamide) (PATA) resin having the pendent chlorobenzylidine ring for the removal of heavy metal ions such as Zn(II) and Ni(II) ions from the aqueous solutions by adsorption technology. Kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic models for Zn(II) and Ni(II) ions adsorption were applied by considering the effect of contact time, initial metal ion concentration and temperature data, respectively. The adsorption influencing parameters for the maximum removal of metal ions were optimized. Adsorption kinetic results followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model based on the correlation coefficient (R2) values and closed approach of experimental and calculated equilibrium adsorption capacity values. The removal mechanism of metal ions by PATA was explained with the Boyd kinetic model, Weber and Morris intraparticle diffusion model and Shrinking Core Model (SCM). Adsorption equilibrium results followed the Freundlich model based on the R2 values and error functions. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of PATA for Zn(II) and Ni(II) ions removal were found to be 105.4 mg/g and 97.3 mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic study showed the adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic in nature.

Opis:
Synthesis via ozone precipitation reaction was used to obtain manganese dioxide (OMD) and it was probed as an adsorbent for zinc ions. Adsorption was followed along shaking time and increasing ratio [NO3 –] / [Zn2+], and isotherms were obtained at different pH values and in the presence of several anions (chloride, nitrate, sulphate, and acetate). It was found that adsorption equilibrium is fast and follows the pseudo-second order model (qe = 34 ±1 mg/g and K = 0.07 ±0.01 g/mg h). Isotherms were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, and Langmuir-Freundlich models, and the best fitting was found with the last one. The process is dependent on pH and the efficiency increases from pH 1 to 4. The ratio [NO3 –] / [Zn2+] up to 3 does not seem to change the behaviour of the process. Regarding the anions, the efficiency of Zn(II) adsorption occurs according to: acetate > nitrate and sulphate > chloride. Manganese oxide obtained via ozonization is an excellent adsorbent for zinc ions.

The surface modified Strychnos potatorum seeds (SMSP), an agricultural waste has been developed into an effective adsorbent for the removal of Zn(II) ions from aqueous environment. The Freundlich model provided a better fit with the experimental data than the Langmuir model as revealed by a high coefficient of determination values and low error values. The kinetics data fitted well into the pseudo-second order model with the coefficient of determination values greater than 0.99. The influence of particle diffusion and film diffusion in the adsorption process was tested by fitting the experimental data with intraparticle diffusion, Boyd kinetic and Shrinking core models. Desorption experiments were conducted to explore the feasibility of regenerating the spent adsorbent and the adsorbed Zn(II) ions from spent SMSP was desorbed using 0.3 M HCl with the efficiency of 93.58%. The results of the present study indicates that the SMSP can be successfully employed for the removal of Zn(II) ions from aqueous environment.

Opis:
Various types of waste materials containing zinc (e.g. dusts and sludges from gas dedusting process) are obtained in steel industry. The contents of Zn in these materials may vary considerably. Even a low concentration of zinc in recirculated products precludes their recycling in ferrous metallurgy aggregates. Long storage of this type of material can lead to contamination of soil and water by zinc compounds which can be leached out by acid rain, for example. This paper focuses on research involving alkaline leaching tests of low zinc content iron-bearing materials. These tests were preceded by the analysis of the elemental, phase and grain size composition, and analysis of the thermodynamic conditions of the leaching process. The main aim of research was to decrease the content of the zinc in the sludge to the level where it is suitable as an iron-bearing material for iron production (~1% Zn). Leaching at elevated temperatures (368 K, 60 min) has led to a decrease in the zinc content in the sludge of about 66%. The research revealed that long hour leaching (298 K, 100 hours) carried out at ambient temperatures caused a reduction in zinc content by 60% to the value of 1.15-1.2% Zn.

Opis:
Zn-Al-Cu alloys are used primarily because of their tribological properties as an alternative material for bronze, cast iron and aluminum alloy bearings and as a construction material. Particularly interesting are high aluminum zinc alloys. Monoeutectic zinc and aluminum alloys are characterized by the highest hardness, tensile strength and wear resistance of all of the zinc alloys. A significant problem with the use of the Zn-Al-Cu alloys is their insufficient resistance to electrochemical corrosion. Properties of Zn-Al-Cu alloys can be improved by heat treatment. The purpose of examination was to determine the effect of heat treatment (aging at various temperatures) on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of the ZnAl40Cu3 alloy. The scope of the examination included: structural examinations, determination of hardness using Brinell’s method and corrosion resistance examinations. Ageing at higher temperatures causes a creation of areas where is an eutectoid mixture. The study showed that ageing causes a decrease in hardness of ZnAl40Cu3 alloy. This decrease is even greater, when the temperature of ageing is lower. The studies have shown a significant influence of ageing on the corrosion resistance of the alloy ZnAl40Cu3. Maximum corrosion resistance were characterized by the sample after ageing at higher temperatures.

Opis:
A biconical dense medium cyclone (BDMC) was applied to reject the gangue from a low-grade Pb-Zn sulfide ore for the first time. Based on mineralogy and heavy liquid separation tests, it was found that the rejection of gangue by the BDMC prior to grinding and flotation was promising. The results revealed that the particle size clearly affected the heavy liquid separation process. The effects of several parameters, such as medium specific gravity (SG), spigot diameter, tilt angle, cone angle and medium/ore mass ratio, on the yield of floats and on the metal recoveries in the floats were examined and the optimal parameters were determined. The results showed that 51.22% of floats were obtained with a lead recovery of 7.92% and a zinc recovery of 12.50%. The extended tests were further carried out with the BDMC being capable of throughputs about 3 t/h, which verified the results obtained in the laboratory experiments. The use of this equipment to pre-treat the refractory ore is promising.

This study aimed at determining the level of pollution from heavy metals that are deposited from air in the area of Gllogoc. The main goal was to identify the emission sources of pollution by using mosses as bio indicators. In this study area, the mining of Fe-Ni (Industrial Ferronickel Complex) is believed to strongly influence the level of heavy metals. The mining and production activity of Fe-Ni affects the soil, water and air. As the air pollution (from liberated aerosols of Industrial Ferronickel Complex) and the deposition products of this pollution are harmful not only locally but also can pollute the environmental at extended distances, the use of mosses allows analyzing the content and origin of the pollution from heavy metals. ICP was used for the determination of heavy metals in moss samples. The use of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), dendograms and other statistical procedures, permitted to understand the source of the air pollution from heavy metals.

Opis:
The investigations were focused on determining the level of trace element pollution of soil and root vegetables cultivated for human consumption in the Miechowski county. The collected soils differed in view of their floatable particles, colloidal clay and organic matter content, as well as pH value. Differences in the total content of trace elements and the content of their soluble forms extracted with 0.1 mol • dm–3 HCl solution also occurred. The total content of trace elements in the analysed soils and their soluble forms were determined by soil reaction. Geometric mean of total heavy metals content in the studied soils was as follows: 55.08 mg Zn • kg–1, 8.08 mg Cu • kg–1, 10.05 mg Ni • kg–1, 19.85 mg Pb • kg–1 and 0.46 mg Cd • kg–1. The assessment of heavy metals content in the analysed soils was conducted according to the framework guidelines for agriculture elaborated by IUNG. In this respect 44 of analysed samples were classified as soils with natural heavy metals contents. The content of trace elements in cultivated root vegetables was determined by the species, analysed plant part and soil pH. The content of these elements was much higher in plant tops than in roots. For instance, if one assumes geometric mean of cadmium and lead content in parsley roots grown in soil with pH • 6.5 as 100, cadmium concentration in leaves was higher by 64 %, and lead content was higher by 36 %. On the basis of the obtained results, content of trace elements in vegetable roots was assessed assuming the critical levels of trace element in agricultural products stated by IUNG. Taking into consideration these criteria was stated that all samples of the vegetable roots fulfilled the requirements of usefulness for human consumption in respect of copper and nickel contents, and majority of them in respect of lead content. However, 7.6 % of samples did not fulfil these requirements because of excessive content of lead (> 1 mg • kg–1), 52.5 % of zinc (> 50 mg • kg–1), and as much as 81.6 % samples because of cadmium excess (> 0.15 mg • kg–1), despite their being cultivated in majority in soils with natural these metals content. Excessive content of copper and nickel was registered only in 1.3 % of tops samples, lead in 51.3 %, zinc in 79.7 %, and cadmium in 98.1 % of tops samples, in which 7.6 % of tops samples did not meet fodder requirements for zinc, and as much as 65.8 % for cadmium. Taking in to account all roots and tops samples, only 0.6 % of them did not meet criteria of usefulness for human consumption, because of copper and nickel excess, 29.4 % for lead, 66.1 % for zinc, and as much as 89.9 % of samples contained excessive amount of cadmium. Moreover, in 3.8 % of samples Zn content exceeded admissible values in fodder and in 32.9 % contained excessive amount of Cd.

City Recreational Parks (RP) exert important functions for inhabitants of great agglomerations. They create peculiar ecosystem subjected to high pressure of anthropogenic factors (ie, motorization, maintenance, dusts), which may be a source of heavy metal contamination. Four parks located within the city Poznan have been: RP Marcinkowski (RPM), RP Solacki (RPS), RP Wodziczko (RPW) and RP Piatkowo (RPP). The aim of the work was to apply different quantitative methods for assessing heavy metal contamination state of these parks and to outline the encountered difficulties in the choice of the appropriate method. On the basis of the assessment made by the IUNG suggestion [16], it appeared, that soils of all Recreational Parks may be considered as not contaminated by Pb, Cu and Zn. Cadmium was the main contaminant of RPM, RPS and RPW soils. The use of data representing the geochemical background [17], classifies soils of all parks as contaminated to polluted, even, whereas the evaluation made on the basis of mean heavy metal contents of Polish soils [18], stated that cadmium solely exceeded the reference value. Criteria reported in the Minister of Environment Directive [19] dealing with heavy metal thresholds seem to be less restrictive. The resulting assessment revealed that soils of investigated parks are free of any contamination.

Opis:
In the shadow of discoveries of large deposits of mineral resources in Poland after World War II, intensive exploration works were carried out, but the results of this research did not bring such spectacular effects. Exploration of Zn-Pb deposits conducted in the vicinity of historic deposits of Tarnowskie Góry and Bytom led to documentation of the Zawiercie, Goluchowice and Marciszów deposits. With some successes, exploration works of metal ore deposits in Paleozoic igneous and metamorphic rocks of the NE margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin were carried out. In this area, the Myszków Mo-W-Cu mineral deposit was confirmed, representing the porphyry copper genetic type. Moreover, in the area of Mrzyglód, the promising mineralization zone was found, requiring further geological research. The exploration of uranium and rare earth element ores did not lead to documentation of the deposits, nevertheless they made it possible to recognize all geological structures in Poland in terms of the possibility of occurrence of ore deposit occurrence of these metals. The prospecting works for these goals was carried out with a relatively small scale and were limited of the Sudetes, where exploitation took place on a fairly large scale in the past (Zloty Stok, Radzimowice, Klecza-Radomice, Wądroże Wielkie). The gold concentration occurring in the Zechstein Kupferschiefer formation and the porphyry copper mineralisation in NE margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin were also studied. The PGI participated in the exploration of mineral resources in marine areas, where besides the hydrocarbon exploration in the Polish economic zone, research on the Baltic polymetallic nodules was carried out, and within the INTEROCEANMETAL consortium the raw material potential of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the Pacific was studied.

Opis:
The study of new occurrences of Pb-Zn mineralization in the Lower Triassic rocks in the NE part of the Silesian-Cracow region was performer. Pb-Zn ore minerals occur in sandstones, gravels and oolitic dolomites and are represented by galena, sphalerite, pyrite, marcasite and an admixture ofchalcopyrite. Vein minerals: barite with celestite, calcite and partly anglesite were also found.
