Opis:
Lean Burn gasoline engines are receiving increasing application because of their potential of improved fuel economy. The conventional three-way converter used in gasoline engines controls effectively the levels of CO and HC, but it displays poor conversion in harmful NOx emission. This study has investigated the use of different materials with metal additives as support for effective NOx control in gasoline engines. In this work, flyash, which is relatively abundant and inexpensive, has been used as a replacement for expensive materials. Development of Catalysts from waste materials is an effective means to enhance the value of the waste. In the present work, X-Zeolite was synthesized from Coal Fly ash. 13-X zeolite was purchased from market. By the process of exchanging Na+ ions present in these zeolites with copper, Silver and Iron metal ions separately, six catalysts were prepared. Investigations were carried out on the 3 cylinder, 4-stroke, water cooled Maruthi Omni Gasoline Engine with a displacement volume of 796 cc and coupled with eddy current dynamometer. The packed catalyst bed was housed in a 100 mm diameter cylindrical pipe and is connected near to the exhaust manifold. AVL Di-gas analyser is used to measure the NOx, CO, HC, CO2, O2 emissions. Experiments were conducted at various loads from no load to maximum load without catalytic converter and then using the Ag-X, Ag-13X, Fe-X , Fe-13X, Ni -X and Ni -13X zeolite catalytic converters. The result reveals that in house made Ag-X , Fe-X and Ni -X Catalysts reduce emission at all levels of load conditions. Ag-X catalyst gives better conversion than Fe-X catalyst and Ni-X catalyst.

Molecular mobility of water molecules has been investigated in the natural zeolite natrolite (Na2Al2Si3O10 ·2H2O) by 1H NMR. Spin-lattice relaxation times in the laboratory and rotating frames (T1 and T1-) have been measured as a function of temperature for a polycrystalline sample. It has been shown that the spin-lattice relaxations times of 1H are governed by the translation motions of water molecules in the natrolite pores. From experimental T1 data it follows that at T > 286 K the diffusion of water molecules along channels parallel to the c axis is observed. From experimental T1 data it follows that at T > 250 K the diffusion of water molecules in transversal channels of natrolite is observed also. At low temperature (T < 250 K) the dipolar interaction with paramagnetic impurities (presumably with Fe3+ ions) become significant as a relaxation mechanism of 1H nuclei.

Nickel has been listed as a priory control pollutant by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Compared with other methods, the combination of vegetation and the addition of mineral sorbents to heavy metal-contaminated soils can be readily applied on a large scale because of the simplicity of technology and low cost. Halloysite and zeolite, among others, can be used for this purpose. A greenhouse study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of using natural zeolite, as well as raw and modified halloysite for the remediation of simulated Ni-contaminated soil. The soil was spiked with five doses of nickel, i.e. 0 (control), 80, 160, 240 and 320 mg·Ni kg-1·soil. The average accumulation of heavy metals in nickel-contaminated soil was found to follow the decreasing order of Ni>Zn>Cr>Cu>Pb. The highest reduction of Pb content was observed in soil samples taken from pots containing 80 and 160 mg·kg-1 of Ni along with the addition of modified halloysite. The strongest effects were caused by natural zeolite, which significantly reduced the average content of chromium. Contamination at 320 mg Ni·kg-1

Methyl radicals generated by ă-irradiation in the proton form of synthetic rho zeolite exposed to CH4 have been investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in the temperature range 110-370 K. Depending on the methane adsorption temperature two EPR spectra of oCH3 radicals were recorded. The isotropic quartet observed after CH4 adsorption at room temperature was assigned to oCH3 radicals freely rotating in the middle of octagonal prism. After adsorption at 413 K, the isotropic quartet is overlapped with the second signal characterized with anisotropy of hyperfine splitting and g-value. It is postulated that anisotropic signal represents the oCH3 radicals located in á-cages and strongly interacting with silicaalumina framework. The mechanisms of radiolytic formation of methyl radicals and the possible stabilization sites are also discussed.

The enthalpy of isopropanol adsorption on ZSM-5 (Zeolite Socony Mobil Framework Type MFI) was determined by the static adsorption method at the temperature range from 20°C to 100°C. Langmuir and Huttig models of equilibrium adsorption have been used to calculate the enthalpy of isopropanol adsorption at these conditions. Adsorption isotherms determined by the flow method at 20°C and 30°C have been also used in the calculations. The obtained values of isopropanol adsorption enthalpy were compared with the values of isopropanol evaporation enthalpy and with the results obtained from isopropanol and water desorption measurements with thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry methods.

In this study, the adsorption behavior of natural and activated zeolites with respect to Cd2+, Cr3+, Pb2+and Zn2+, was studied in order to consider theirabilityto remove hazardousmetals fromdrilling mud. The batch method was employed, using initial metal concentrations in solution in the range of0.1 to 2.5 mg/dm3. It was determined that independently of the concentration, the adsorption ratios of zeolite towardsmetal cations match the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The results of the research on the reduction of concentration of hazardousmetals from drilling mud wastewater by means of natural and activated zeoliteswere presented in the further part of this work. Natural and activated zeolites were introduced in portions (from 0.2to 10 g) to 100 cm3of wastewater; then, the content of metalions was determined using an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer. The experimental data showed that the applicationof activated zeolite enabled the removal rate of Cr3+, Pb2+, Zn2+and Cd2+close to 93%, 45%, 56% and 84%, respectively. In the case of the natural zeolite, the degree of hazardousmetals removal was lower by only a few percent, but still high enough to beinteresting from the practical point of view. Satisfactory effects of hazardousmetal ionsremoval from drilling muds were achieved using 2 to 5 g of zeolite. The obtained results proved that the natural zeolite constitutes an important material for efficient removal of hazardousmetalionsfrom drilling mud wastewater.

Zeolite has been successfully synthesized from clay and rice husk ash in the form of powder by using the hydrothermal method with variations in chemical compositions of alkaline solution and the amount of rice husk ash. The clay raw material was obtained from the Sidrap area of South Sulawesi and rice husk ash is obtained from the burning pile of rice husks. Sidrap clay and rice husk ash were activated using an alkaline solution of NaOH and varied rice husk ash and the addition of AlCl3. The addition of AlCl3, an alkaline solution of NaOH and H2O was used in the amount of 25.5 grams and variations of rice husk ash were 2.5 grams and 6.5 grams. Meanwhile, without the addition of AlCl3, an alkaline solution of NaOH and H2O was used for 20.5 grams and variations of rice husk ash from 2.5 grams and 6.5 grams. Then the mixture was then put into an autoclave with a temperature of 100°C for 3 hours. The basic material used in the manufacture of zeolite is carried out by X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) characterization to determine the constituent elements of basic material, which showed the content of SiO2 was 45.80 wt% in the clay and 93.40% in the rice husk ash. The crystalline structure of the zeolite formed was characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). It was found the resulting zeolite were identified as Zeolite-Y, Hydrosodalite, and ZSM-5. The microstructure properties of the resulting zeolite were determined by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

The utilisation of fine coal waste is still limited, even though its availability is very abundant in the mining industry. This study utilises fine coal by converting it into syngas through catalytic gasification. The gasification process was carried out at a temperature range of 350–550°C for 10–50 minutes using natural zeolite as a catalyst. The syngas composition and quality parameters were evaluated through the H2/CO ratio, heating value, and gasification efficiency. From the research results, fine coal contained high amounts of carbon and fixed carbon. Temperature is the variable that most influences the gasification process. The addition of zeolite actively increased the CO content in the syngas. The H2/CO ratio of syngas >1, the highest HHV and LHV 16.15 and 14.46 MJ/Nm3 with the highest carbon conversion efficiency value of 88.85%, made fine coal very suitable to be used as raw material for the gasification process to produce environmentally friendly syngas.

This work presents the research results of the influence of modification deSONOx type catalyst of the sulfur dioxide emissions in the process of the hard coal combustion. The addition of zeolite catalysts modified by transition metal ions: V, Mg, activated by zinc sorbent with or without graphite addition caused the deeper burning of coal grains. The addition of the deSOx catalysts to the coal resulted in lowered sulphur dioxide emission. The addition of unmodified zeolite to coal during combustion reduced sulphur dioxide emission at about 5%. The modification of the support by both V and Mg reduced the amount of sulphur dioxide significantly. The obtained results of SO2 removal from exhaust gases were from 34.5% for Sip/Mg to 68.3% for Sip/V.

Zeolites are nanoporous alumina silicates in a framework with cations, exhibiting ion-exchange properties with metal ions making them possible antimicrobial materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of ion-exchanged zeolites and the toxic potential of these materials. Zeolite-Co2+ and Li+ exhibited the most effective inhibition on Staphylococcus aureus growth than in other microorganisms (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeroginosa) in low concentrations. Zeolite-Cu2+ presented higher zone of inhibition when tested against Candida albicans, while Zeolite-Zn2+ showed similar effectiveness among all the microorganisms. When ion-exchanged zeolites were used in effective concentrations to achieve antimicrobial activity, no alterations against bioindicators organisms as Artemia sp. and L. sativa were found and, in addition, they have non-significant result in terms of DNA cleavage activity. Zeolites have advantage of releasing slowly the metals loaded and this characteristic can to be considered promising as potential antimicrobial materials in concentrations safe for use.

Opis:
In the paper, the assessment of the impact of heavy metals on water objects, namely copper and chromium was performed, and the methods for their neutralization were defined. A scientifically grounded method for the selection of natural zeolite for the purification of wastewater from heavy metals has been developed, provided that they are jointly present. The physicochemical characteristics of two metals related to heavy metals are presented: copper and chromium. The methods for determining the sorption capacity of natural zeolite for copper and chromium compounds, as well as the methods of analytical control of the wastewater components were presented. The results of the experimental studies on the combined adsorption of copper and chromium cations by natural zeolite under static conditions were presented. The changes in the chemical composition of the zeolite surface as a result of heavy metal sorption have been investigated. The influence of the nature of the ions and the pH of the adsorption medium on the selectivity of the heavy metal ions extraction by zeolite was analyzed. A diagram of the composition of the solution, depending on the pH values, was constructed. The pH of the beginning of deposition of the corresponding heavy metal hydroxides on the zeolite surface was calculated. While analyzing the results of experimental studies on the combined adsorption of copper and chromium ions, it was found that the copper ions are significantly better adsorbed by the sorbent than the chromium ions. Despite the same concentration of the chromium and copper ions in solution, Cu2+ is extracted selectively. As can be seen from the results of experimental studies, the concentration of copper on the surface of the sorbent increases from 0.628% mass at a concentration of 0.01 g/dm3 to 47.380% mass at a concentration of 1 g/dm3. The studies on the static activity of clinoptilolite for the copper and chromium ions indicate a simultaneous mechanism of the process, which involves ion exchange and physical adsorption. The concentration of the chromium ions on the surface of the sorbent after adsorption depends on the increase of the concentration of Cr3+ in the original solution to a lesser extent. The results of the studies on the combined adsorption of the Cu2+ and Cr3+ ions indicate the possibility of their chromatographic separation, which makes their further use possible.

The aim of the study was to determine the shear strength of the soil-root layer obtained as a result of growth of cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) on degraded soil enriched with the addition of a new zeolite substrate Z-ion. Measurement of shear strength for soil-root layers formed as a result of growth of a grass species (on degraded soil alone and on degraded soil with added Z-ion) was performed in a direct shear apparatus. The measurement results allowed determining parameters of equations describing the dependence of shear strength of studied soil-root layers on normal stress e.g. cohesion and internal friction coefficient. Under the experimental conditions, application of 1% v/v substrate addition to degraded soil induced development of cocksfoot root system which resulted in the significantly increased cohesion of soil-root layer (by 30%) as compared to that formed on degraded soil alone. The enhanced cohesion of the soil-root layer formed on soil enriched with Z-ion resulted in its significantly increased shear strength as compared to that of soil-root layer obtained on soil alone. Further research using higher doses of the Z-ion substrate (greater than 1% v/v) is needed to obtain the information at what dose ranges of the substrate one can expect even more intensive development of plant root systems and, consequently, further significant improvement in the shear strength of the soil-root layers.

Calf diarrhea continues to be the major problem of calves in the neonatal period. The effect of zeolites has been increasingly studied in ruminant health in recent years. In the present study, the efficacy of cristobalite, a zeolite, in neonatal calf diarrhea was studied first time. For this purpose, twenty-five neonatal calves with diarrheas were divided into two groups, and Group 1 (n=12) received conventional treatment and Group 2 (n=13) received cristobalite (Zoosorb 10 mg/kg) orally 3 times a day in addition to conventional treatment. Escherichia coli k99 and CS31a, bovine rotavirus and bovine coronavirus were isolated from fecal samples at the beginning of the treatment, on the third day and before discharge. It was determined that the recovery period in Group 2 was 0.95 (20.6%) days shorter than in Group 1 (p<0.05) while no viral agents were found on the fifth day in Group 2, viral shedding continued in 4 of 5 calves in Group 1. In conclusion, the study revealed that cristobalite speeds the recovery time and possibly decreases viral shedding in neonatal calf diarrhea, demonstrating a remarkable efficiency in the treatment.
