Suicide is one of the most serious social and public health problems in the world as it is currently the third leading cause of death for youths between the ages of 15 and 30 years. Youth suicidal behaviour has continuous to be a significant national problem in need of urgent attention by Nigeria government. Common risk factors of suicide behaviour among Nigerian youths were examined in this study. A descriptive method was adopted and data was collected via a survey of 500 respondents in five tertiary educational institutions in Edo State. Data analysis was performed using percentages, means, t-test, and correlation and regression analysis. Findings indicated that depression and mental illness, Anxiety and stress, sexual violence, substance use, unemployment and poverty, and interpersonal conflict were the major risk factors predicting suicide behaviours among youths in Edo State. Thus, the study recommends among others that greater emphasis should be placed on encouraging healthy peer relationships among youths. This is because social cohesiveness and tolerance have been shown to improve the mental well-being of young people.

Background. Sports betting has been shown to be escalating among youths in developing countries. However, there is still insufficient information on the predictors of sports betting among this particular social group. The aim of this study was to examine social predictors of sports betting among youths in Ilorin, Kwara State, North Central Nigeria. Material and methods. A cross-sectional community survey was conducted among 470 youths from Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. Social predictors of sports betting (SPSB) were evaluated using a 23-item questionnaire consisting of three parts: Part I - socio-demographic variables (age, gender, employment status); Part II –items on sports betting engagement (SBE); and Part III - items on family influence, peer influence, and media influence. Frequency and percentage, the phi coefficient, and binary logistic regression were used for analyses. Results. The findings revealed a weak relationship between sports betting and family influence (=.218); a moderate relationship between sports betting and peer influence (=.523), and a moderate relationship between sports betting and media influence (=.559). Gender and employment status were significantly associated with sports betting (p < .05). Conclusion. The study showed that family influence, peer influence, media influence, and employment status were predictors of sports betting among Nigerian youths. Gambling regulatory bodies, parents, educators, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should sensitize young people on the dangers of engaging in sports betting as a sustainable source of income.

Punktem wyjścia do prowadzonej dyskusji były badania przeprowadzone wspólnie przez CBOS i Collegium Civitas w czerwcu 2017 roku, Patriotyzm i nacjonalizm w świadomości Polaków.W pierwszej części debaty gości dyskutowali różne podejścia do definiowania patriotyzmu i nacjonalizmu oraz ich wzajemnej relacji. Część druga była poświęcona dyskursowi publicznemu odnoszącemu się do tych dwóch pojęć. W ostatniej części panelu goście dyskutowali o patriotyzmie wśród młodzieży ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem studentów szkół wyższych.
The aim of the debate was to look at what patriotism and nationalism in modern Poland are. The starting point for the discussion was a research carried out jointly by CBOS and Collegium Civitas in June 2017, Patriotism and nationalism in the minds of Poles. In the first part of the debate guests discussed different approaches to defining patriotism and nationalism and their mutual relationship. The second part was devoted to public discourse referring to these two concepts. In the last part of the panel guests discussed patriotism among young people, with particular emphasis on university students.

The dominant notion of gender identity in Poland has been strongly influenced by essentialist concepts of gender roles. Consequently, transgender youths and their parents often experience social stigmatization, with the latter having their parenting skills called into question by people in their surrounding social environment. This has caused self-accusation among many parents, which may have influenced their own attitudes towards their children’s gender identity. The following paper details the subsequent outcomes of a qualitative research study conducted in Poland among the parents of transgender youths. The results of this research show the attitudes of trans youths parents towards their children’s gender identity; the initial reactions to their children coming out; their personal feelings; the process of reframing and reworking their stances.

Marriage and family have been examined and described in various aspects and dimensions of their existence. One of the research trend of sociology of family is searching for the answer how the notions of marriage and family are perceived in the eyes of young people. This problem has been scrutinized for many decades. The research allows to observe certain continuity and as well as some changes in perception of the above mentioned notions by the youths. The aim of this article is to state the place of marriage and family in the hierarchy of the youths’ life values. On base of available literature, as well as private research, it can be stated that marriage and family still remain the values respected and desired by young people. It should be highlighted, however, that the model of today fashionable family differs from the one functioning several decades ago. It is the morality of marriage-and-family that has changed. Thus, the model of marriage and family is perceived differently by the youths nowadays. We can observe the emergence of certain alternative forms of marriage-and-family life. Nevertheless, although the face of marriage and family keeps constantly changing, and other values like self realization and broadly understood individualism become more and more significant, still marriage and family invariably place themselves at the top of the hierarchy of the youths’ life values.

In the article the author makes an attempt to describe the functions of music in youths’ everyday life. The article consists of four parts. In the first section, the main social functions of music are presented, such as integrative, aesthetic, communicational and educational. Then, the methodological framework of the author’s research is discussed (qualitative study based on in-depth interviews, accompanied by focus group interviews and observations). The third part of the article is devoted to the presentation of the main functions of music in the everyday life of Warsaw’s adolescents, as revealed by the research. Finally, in the last section, a conclusion is drafted that what seems particularly interesting in the results is the marginalization of the resistance and protest-oriented function of music, especially in comparison to the importance and visibility of its aesthetic function, as well as integrative and emotional ones.

The research was handled by The Action-research in Contemporary Culture and Education – Practice and Theory team, and was commissioned by Rector of Nicolaus Copernicus University. The examination was held in 30 km radius from Grudziądz – the most efficient distance in terms of economics and everyday travels. We’ve found schools in Świecie, Nowe and Łasin in a circle of our interest. The population of examined region is ca. 155 000. An unemployment rate is significantly higher than average (over 29% in a region). Weak educational infrastructure, no industry. Research was conducted from March 20’ to April 18’ 2013 on 2016 students in 18 schools (regular and technical high schools). The main aim of studies was characteristic of a-level and pre-a-level students from Grudziądz and Grudziądz region and their educational plans. We focused especially on plans regarding higher education. All public school students, from all the high schools, were participating in a research. The auditorial survey was a main used method. The questionnaire was divided in 3 parts. The first was general information part, the second was educational plans part. The questionnaire contained also a set of questions to estimate economical, social, and cultural level - according to P. Bourdieu’s theory. The main examination was preluded by pilot examination which allowed us to tune up a research tool and a method.

This study aims to provide more in-depth knowledge about professionals’ views regarding Internet use among youths with intellectual disability (ID). How do the professionals describe the abilities of the youths with ID when using the Internet for social, romantic, and sexual reasons? What kinds of experiences do the professionals have of these youths’ Internet usage, and how do they talk about their ways of dealing with this? In what ways do the professionals describe their own competence regarding Internet usage among youths with ID aged 16-21 years, and do they express the need for any specific tools? Qualitative research interviews were conducted with 17 professionals, 4 males and 13 females, between the ages of 29 and 58. The professionals described challenges with the youths’ various emotional and intellectual abilities, as well as their technical knowledge in relation to Internet use. The results highlight three themes: A two-fold usage, Between being controlling and permissive, and A lack of strategies. The article discusses the development of a ‘Participation-script’, where a continuous dialogue with the youths with ID exists parallel to a restrictive Net-script. We argue that everyday school situations concern joint decision-making between professionals and pupils with ID. Such an approach to participation is based on relationships, that is, oriented towards the self-understanding and individual agency of youths with ID, as well as to the self-understanding of the professionals involved in the lives of youths with ID.

The presented paper refers to the lifestyles of youths manifesting risky behaviour. Lifestyle in this paper is understood as a category of evaluative and cultural orientations of the respective group of youths. The first part presents the understanding of the concept of lifestyle available in the subject-matter literature. In further considerations, the perspective of values accepted and pursued by socially maladjusted youths or those at the risk of maladjustment have been selected and discussed. The following paper is of an analytical and descriptive character.
Prezentowany artykuł dotyczy problematyki stylu życia młodzieży przejawiającej zachowania ryzykowne. Styl życia w niniejszym artykule jest rozumiany, jako kategoria orientacji wartościujących i kulturowych tej grupy młodzieży. W pierwszej części przedstawione zostały dostępne w literaturze przedmiotu koncepcje stylu życia. Dla dalszych rozważań wybrana została perspektywa wartości uznawanych i realizowanych przez młodzież niedostosowaną społecznie i zagrożoną niedostosowaniem. Artykuł ma charakter analityczno-opisowy.

Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is referred as a cause of a back pain in adults, probably on the basis of spinal overload and degeneration. Back pain in children and youths has been assessed only occasionally. The aim of the study was to determine the occurrence of back pain in adolescent with IS. MATERIAL AND METHODS Poll assessment and medical documentation analysis of 70 patients (65F and 5M) with IS was conducted. Mean age was 15 years (SD = 1.7), mean value of body mass index (BMI) was 18.7 (SD = 2.3), mean Cobb angle 26.4° (SD = 13.8), apical vertebra rotation (AVR) 13.4° (SD = 8.2), thoracic kyphosis 26.1° (SD = 12.2), lumbar lordosis 33° (SD = 9.4) lower limbs discrepancy 0.29 cm (SD = 0.64). Intensity of back pain was evaluated by visual analogue scale (VAS). RESULTS Back pain was present in 2/3 of subjects (65.7%). Intensity of pain was 1–7 points of VAS (mean 3.3, SD = 1.6). Pain arose usually in static positions. Cobb angle correlated positively with intensity of pain, reaching level of statistical signifi cance (r = 0.24, p < 0.05). No signifi cant correlation between AVR and pain severity was also observed (r = 0.13, p > 0.05), as well as between BMI and pain (r = 0.2, p > 0.05). Thoracic kyphosis (r = -0.2, p > 0.05), lumbar lordosis (r = -0.21, p > 0.05) and abbreviation of lower limb (r = -0.19, p > 0.05) revealed negative, insignifi cant correlation with intensity of pain. CONCLUSIONS Back pain occurs commonly in youths with idiopathic scoliosis. Statistically signifi cant positive relation between severity of back pain and Cobb angle was observed. Patients with IS and back pain should be diagnosed against other possible spine pathology.
Skolioza idiopatyczna (IS) jest częstą przyczyną występowania dolegliwości bólowych w dojrzałym wieku, prawdopodobnie na tle zmian przeciążeniowych oraz zwyrodnieniowych. Bóle grzbietu u dzieci i młodzieży znacznie rzadziej są przedmiotem badań. Celem pracy było określenie częstości występowania bólów grzbietu u młodzieży z IS. MATERIAŁ I METODY Przeprowadzono badanie ankietowe i poddano analizie dokumentację medyczną 70 pacjentów z IS (65 K i 5 M). Średnia wieku wyniosła 15 lat (SD = 1,7), średnia wartość wskaźnika masy ciała (BMI) 18,7 (SD = 2,3), kąta skrzywienia według Cobba 26,4° (SD = 13,8), kąta rotacji radiologicznej kręgu szczytowego (AVR) 13,4° (SD = 8,2), kifozy piersiowej 26,1° (SD = 12,2), lordozy lędźwiowej 33° (SD = 9,4), różnica długości czynnościowej kończyn dolnych 0,29 cm (SD = 0,64). Stopień nasilenia dolegliwości bólowych grzbietu określono za pomocą wzrokowej skali analogowej (VAS). WYNIKI Bóle grzbietu występowały u 2/3 badanych (65,7%). Stopień nasilenia bólu wahał się w zakresie 1–7 pkt VAS (średnio 3,3, SD = 1,6). Ból występował zwykle w pozycjach statycznych. Wielkość kąta Cobba korelowała dodatnio z nasileniem bólu, osiągając poziom istotności statystycznej (r = 0,24, p < 0,05). Zaobserwowano także słabą, nieistotną statystycznie korelację pomiędzy wielkością AVR i nasileniem dolegliwości bólowych (r = 0,13, p > 0,05) oraz BMI i nasileniem dolegliwości (r=0,2, p > 0,05). Wartości kifozy piersiowej (r = -0,2, p > 0,05), lordozy lędźwiowej (r = -0,21, p > 0,05) oraz skrótu kończyny dolnej (r = -0,19, p > 0,05) korelowały słabo ujemnie z nasileniem dolegliwości bólowych, również nie osiągając poziomu istotności statystycznej. WNIOSKI Dolegliwości bólowe grzbietu występują powszechnie wśród młodzieży z skoliozą idiopatyczną. Zaobserwowano istotną statystycznie zależność między nasileniem dolegliwości bólowych grzbietu a wielkością kąta Cobba. Pacjenci ze skoliozą idiopatyczną i bólem pleców powinni podlegać dalszej diagnostyce w celu wykluczenia innych przyczyn dolegliwości.

As it was proved, Grudziądz is the biggest (almost 100 000 citizens, #40 in the biggest Polish cities list) city with no own university. This status might be both a cause and a result of other city’s problems. First of all – Grudziądz has the highest unemployment rate among all Polish cities – over 23%. Secondly Grudziądz has less investments than other cities in that region. Moreover, thirdly, there’s an proved opinion, that Grudziądz is unpopulating and is so called “town for a rent”. Situation on a educational market and a general economic and social condition causes in specific choices of young Grudziądzans. 1. They plan higher education more often. 2. They declare different set of majors than young Poles in general. Dominating faculties are: medicine, law, education, economics, architecture. 3. We’re finding a huge different – again in comparison to a general data – in a category of school type. Domination of universities, and no private universities. 4. Major – over 78% – chose regular full time studies. Specific a above mentioned choices indicates conservative and safe approach to youths future. Moreover it proves a responsibility. What’s even more important those date may be related to an information about leaving family home plans – that is why we may call it the accelerated adulthood and independence.

Opis:
The present publication deals with the description of selected aspect of young people’s mentality, i.e. their systems of values. The research was conducted three times: in 2003 (325 respondents), in 2008 (379 respondents), and in 2013 (368 respondents), and it embraced students of the Bialystok universities. An attempt was made to establish if in the period of the ten years between the three surveys, and thus with the advancement of the transformational processes in Poland, one could observe changes in the mentality in the desired direction from the point of view of political transformations from ‘collectivism’ to ‘individualism’. The way of understanding values was adopted from M. Rokeach’s theory. To study the system of values, the Rokeach Value Survey was used. The obtained results lead to a conclusion that together with the advancement of transformation processes, young people’s systems of values undergo the transformation ‘towards individualism’ (except the comparison of the groups from 2008 and 2013). However, this ‘individualisation’ refers to a particular category of values. A growth of preferences for ‘pro-developmental’ values, which are essential for the system changes, was not observed. Instead, there is stronger acceptance of hedonistic values connected with the need for stimulation (an interesting, pleasant and diversified life), as well as the values connected with the social and material status. There was also an increase in the significance of collective values, which are a part of stabilizingaffiliate syndrome.
