Opis:
Nowadays, the significance of women in the international movement of migrants is important both from a quantitative and qualitative point of view. Many migrant women move to other countries either on their own or to join their husbands or other family members. The number of migrant women is also increasing in Europe. For this reason, focusing on the phenomenon of gender-based migration has become an important research element and affects many areas. The mass migration of women from highly diverse cultural backgrounds to European countries draws particular attention to the problems of integrating these women in host countries. However, most European countries lack integration policies that take into account the real needs of migrant women. Given that women account for almost half of all migrants, data on migration should be gender-sensitive and state policies must take into account how gender actually shapes the different needs of migrants. Also, since migrant women/ refugees who come to European countries constitute a heterogeneous group in many respects, this heterogeneity should be taken into account in integration processes. In this article, two issues have been taken into account as research questions: 1, are immigrant/refugee women treated the same as immigrant/refugee men? and 2, is gender taken into account in the integration policies of European countries? To study the issues presented in the article, a review of the available literature was used, as well as data available on the websites of the OECD and the European Commission.

Opis:
Child-centred narratives of Polish migrant mothers: cross-generational identity constructions abroad Delineating narrative accounts of Polish migrant mothers, the article discusses lives of contemporary family migrants to Germany and the UK. Focusing on children, it looks at current and future ethnic identity orientations of the children of Polish parents raised abroad, as they are envisioned by their mothers. The discussions are embedded in a broader context of empirically-driven mothering strategies, with the distinctions between four models presented to showcase what possible reasoning and/or outcomes certain parenting practices may entail. Dynamics of foreign/local and familiar/distant elements of parenting are addressed, highlighting a continuum of orientations towards home, destination country or both locales. In addition, the paper argues that children’s centrality is evident in maternal accounts, calling for a family-focused orientation in future research into Polish post-2004 migrants.

Opis:
The article focuses on the adaptation and acculturation of Vietnamese immigrants in the Polish society. Specifically, it concentrates on the situation of young Vietnamese women. It is based on analysis of 22 regular interviews and supplementary informal conversations with young Vietnamese immigrants in Warsaw conducted between 2007 and 2012. The author stresses the psychological problems and internal conflicts brought about by the process of adapting to Polish ways of living and thinking. The researched group was composed of 1.5 and second generation of Vietnamese who either were born in Poland, or grew up here from an early age. The situation of these young people, in particular of young women, grows on profound differences between expectations addressed to them in the Vietnamese society from which they come from, and the Polish culture in which they chose to or must live. Many Vietnamese norms are deeply inculcated and internalised – for instance those connected with having children, especially sons or those connected with the higher position of the older generation. At the same time, young Vietnamese immigrants find various Polish normative solutions much more attractive and favourable, for instance giving more freedom to girls by Polish parents, equal relations between men and women (especially between spouses and between parents and children).

Opis:
The concept of mixed marriage refers to the relationship of people representing different cultures (intercultural marriage), religions (interreligious marriage or interfaith marriage) or nationality (transnational marriage). Polish women are increasingly deciding to marry foreigners, which are concluded both in Poland and abroad. Marriages of people from different countries, using different languages, brought up and educated in different cultural or religious systems may encounter difficulties in building social / family relationships. This may mean that Polish women in mixed marriages may be / become victims of domestic, economic, psychological, physical and sexual violence, often conditioned by customary norms. What’s more, not all types of violence or crimes against women are ever banned in the countries where Polish migrant women live. The situation can be further complicated when it comes to a marriage regulated, for example, by Sharia law. The article attempts to answer the question whether Polish legal regulations (or international agreements ratified by Poland) guarantee that women from mixed marriages receive any kind of protection, and if so, where and how they can apply for it.

Role-Identity
Opis:
Migrant household work is a global phenomenon present across geographical contexts. Employing a household worker, especially a worker coming from another country, is a symbolically complex situation that requires interpretive work and negotiations of role-identities from interactional partners. There has been much debate about how to define the relationship between a domestic and/or care worker and her/his employer. It has been argued that the preferred definition by workers themselves is one that centers on work (Anderson 2000). In contrast, “fictive kinship” appears to be the employers’ almost universal strategy, which is usually portrayed in the literature as an exploitative practice (Romero 1992; Anderson 2000; Parreñas 2001; Constable 2003; Lan 2006; McDowell 2006). In this paper, I offer a conceptual grid that consists of hierarchy/equality and distance/intimacy dimensions to examine complex relationships between domestic workers and employers, elaborated during the case study of Polish migrant domestic workers in Naples in 2004. Within the investigated site some elements of the traditional model of service culture have persisted. Migrant workers who come from a post-communist country, and who have rather egalitarian attitudes, have been confronted with these elements. The result has been a clash of definitions over the household worker’s role. Polish women developed two contrasting ways of experiencing and coping with it. The strategies identified in the workers’ narratives are professionalization and personalization, and they refer respectively to emphasizing the professional and the personal dimensions in relations with the employer. They manifest themselves on the levels of action (as narrated by the workers) and narrative construction. The strategies on the level of action aim to shift the situation in a desired direction; the narrative strategies aim at framing the situation in a desired way within a narrative. The text underlines the diversity of migrant response and tentatively assesses the output of different strategies.

The article considers the role of the third sector in addressing the impact of COVID-19 on Ukrainian women migrants in Poland. Based on research amongst Ukrainian women in Poland, the article argues that the primary effects of the pandemic have been to intensify existing problems in a number of spheres, and to illustrate that it is the interconnection between these spheres that constitutes the unique experience of migrant women. In this context, we argue that there is a need for third sector projects that address the experiences of migrant women during Covid and that the perspectives of Ukrainian women need to be incorporated in wider debates and actions regarding post-pandemic Polish society. The article reflects on how this can be achieved.

In the article I examine the modes of social involvement that are present in contemporary Swedish cinematography. In my opinion, many of the directors from this Scandinavian country are trying to include in their works the elements of social criticism. They also intend to inform, or to change the attitudes of their viewers. Problems that appear in these films are related, inter alia, to the questions of equality, globalization, multiculturalism, migration, emancipation of women, trafficking, and consumerism.
