Opis:
Since ancient times, curiosity (curiositas) was perceived as a misdeed, negative passion resulting from an irrepressible drive in the pursuit of knowledge and associated with conceit. However, its positive aspect did not go unnoticed. This was associated with moderate inquisitiveness, which did not exceed the limits of cognition, and was determined by the existing worldview (curiositas versus studiositas). There existed a conviction that women, being closer to nature and unable to control their emotions, were more likely to succumb to undesirable curiosity; the mythical Pandora and biblical Eve being cited as examples to further underscore the point. Hence, they were taught the ability to refrain from wanting to satisfy their curiosity. In spite of this, 17th century Europe witnessed the emergence of women, many of whom were authors of scholarly essays and dissertations, works of encyclopedic nature, of textbooks and manuals on natural philosophy, “books of secrets”, of women’s writing, and of poems describing the universe. In the Republic of Poland, though, this type of creative activity was, for quite some time, met with utter incomprehension or no acceptance, if not outright criticism.

Opis:
The paper describes the phenomenon of romance tourism through the narratives taken from the German Internet portal 1001-Geschichte.de. Romance tourism is a term used to characterize women who during holidays in the countries of global south engage in a personal relationship with a local man. As that relationship is emotional in character it cannot be limited to simple sex tourism. The German portal connects women whose feeling were abused by local man. The stories they share are consistent with narrative structures used for describing romantic love in the Western culture. However, due to the specific context, exotic environment and different cultural background of the lover, those stories are all examples of Saidian orientalism. Those dimensions form the subject of the present paper.

Introduction. The menopausal age of women is characterized by a high probability of health problems related with oestrogen deficiency and reduced ovarian hormonal activity. The most significant element in the therapy of the menopausal problems is to take part in physical activity on at least a moderate level, which is sufficient to maintain health. Objective. To investigate the effect of physical activity on the severity of the symptoms of menopause and body mass index BMI, which can decisively influence menopause. Material and methods. A group of respondents consisting of 210 women aged between 45–65 who were not using hormone replacement therapy, and staying at a rehabilitation centre. The study was conducted in 2013–2014 in the provinces of Silesia, Podlasie and Malopolska. Research tools consisted of a self-designed survey questionnaire and the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). Results. Mean BMI indicated overweight of the women and their infrequency and low level participation in physical activity. The intensity of menopausal symptoms increased with BMI, and low physical activity of the respondents decreased with age. Increase in the intensity of physical activity decreased the severity of symptoms characteristic for menopausal age. Conclusions. Physical activity can play an important role in reducing menopausal symptoms and preventing the most frequently occurring diseases of menopausal age.

Opis:
The article tells the story of “Ster”, the first radical feminist magazine in Poland. It was first published in 1895–1896 in Lviv under the title “Ster. A magazine about the work and education of women”, and examined socio-cultural matters from the point of view of emancipated women. The editor-in-chief was Paulina Kuczalska-Reinschmit, and its writers included Eliza Orzeszkowa, Maria Konopnicka, Maria Dulębianka and Stefan Żeromski. After Kuczalska-Reinschmit moved to Warsaw, she reactivated the magazine as a bulletin for the Association of Emancipated Polish Women. It was then published from 1907 until the outbreak of World War I. The magazine presented the radical programme of Polish feminists. Among its later writers were P. Kuczalska-Reinschmit, Józefa Bojanowska and Romana Pachucka.

London
Opis:
Advertisement is spreading into almost every step of our everyday life in London. As a matter of fact, visual ads can be met mostly at London’s underground stations or bus stops, but private companies use all sorts of media to get to as many prospect customers as possible. What is the general meaning of it? It’s impossible to deny that advertising has a huge impact upon our lives, including our beliefs and system of values we believe in. It happens even though we do not always realise it. All the creators of ads aim at getting to people who are not aware that they are being convinced to buy something. But not only advertisement affects our lives. We also exert influence on it. British ads have been adjusted to our life – they show our culture, and often the reality of our dreams. Therefore, if we carefully look at them and human characters exposed by them, we can learn a lot about modern man, his life, aspirations and needs. The range of social changes taking place in Europe and contemporary world is very vast. Our knowledge and approach to issues related to sex, sexism, stereotypes, gender roles and discrimination have undergone signicant changes over the past years. The dynamics of these changes has brought to us not only new solutions, but also new, widely discussed issues today. One of them is the phenomenon of sexism and stereotypical perception of gender norms. Stereotypes regarding gender norms that we notice in advertisements concern not only women but also men - as I mentioned during the conference in London. In fact, the image of a woman in advertising has been limited to old-fashion female roles (including the role of sexual objects for men). But more and more oen it’s beginning to evolve towards images of modern aspiring women. This diversity can be seen in London’s outdoor advertising more and more.

Midrash, a Polish social and cultural profile magazine (published since April 1997), is a monthly journal that is a representative of the so-called ‘minor press’. The magazine is connected with the Midrash Library publishing house. Its founder was Konstanty Gebert and the current editor is Piotr Paziński. The articles of Midrash magazine give answers to such questions as: How are women described and treated in modern patriarchal Judaism culture? In what context is it possible to talk about issues connected with women and Zionism. Midrash magazine also deals with a positive interpretation and presentation of women via the multitude of interviews and articles concerning strong, talented, and determined women. Despite their hard lives these women were and are able to create successful careers and wonderful families. Their voices are an important element in discussions that refer to culture, faith, and historical heritage. The image of the woman as presented by Midrash will be confronted with the cultural recognition of the woman in the Jewish community. This article will use quantitative analysis (the linguistic method and literature studies) with help from the qualitative case study research method.

Background: The health potential of a person can be improved thanks to recreational physical activity and rational diet. The sense of life satisfaction is also one of significant health resources. Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze the relations between the level of life satisfaction and the frequency of consuming selected products in the group of young women who engage in fitness for recreational purposes. Material and Methods: The study involved 200 young women (20-30 years old) who regularly do recreational physical activity in fitness clubs in Małopolska. An original questionnaire was used to measure the frequency of consumption of food products, with the following scale: several times a day, once a day, several times a week, once a week, several times a month, and more rarely / never. The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) by Diener et al., adapted into Polish by Juczyński, was used to measure life satisfaction. The results were analyzed with the use of U Mann-Whitney test and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients in a statistical package PQStat ver. 1.6. Results: Statistical analysis showed that along with higher life satisfaction, women significantly less often consumed: white bread (p<0.05) and whole milk (p<0.05), and significantly more often: wholemeal bread (p<0.05), whole-grain rice and pasta (p<0.001), legumes (p<0.05), fermented milk products (p<0.05), fish (p<0.05), seafood (p<0.01), beef (p<0.01) and vegetable juices (p<0.001). The comparison of the mean frequency of consumption of certain foods depending on the level of life satisfaction (low vs. high according to the SWLS) showed that women who displayed high life satisfaction significantly more often consumed wholemeal bread (p<0.01), whole-grain rice and pasta (p<0.001), curd cheese with reduced fat content (p<0.05), seafood (p<0.05), beef (p<0.001) and vegetable juices (p<0.05), and significantly less often, sweets and confectionery (p<0.05) than did women displaying low life satisfaction. Conclusions: The study proved the predictive role of life satisfaction in the development of eating habits of young, physically active women, indicating more rational dietary choices of women with higher levels of this individual quality.
Wprowadzenie: Poprawie potencjału zdrowotnego człowieka sprzyja rekreacyjna aktywność fizyczna i racjonalny sposób żywienia. Materiał i metody: Badania przeprowadzono w grupie 200 młodych kobiet (20-30 lat), regularnie podejmujących rekreacyjną aktywność fizyczną w klubach fitness w Małopolsce. Zastosowano autorski kwestionariusz częstości konsumpcji produktów spożywczych, z uwzględnieniem skali: kilka razy dziennie, raz dziennie, kilka razy w tygodniu, raz w tygodniu, kilka razy w miesiącu i rzadziej/nigdy. Do pomiaru zadowolenia z życia wykorzystano Skalę Satysfakcji z Życia (SWLS) Dienera i wsp. w adaptacji Juczyńskiego. Analizę wyników przeprowadzono z zastosowaniem testu U Manna-Whitneya i współczynników korelacji rangowych Spearmana w pakiecie statystycznym PQStat ver. 1.6. Wyniki: Analiza statystyczna wykazała, że kobiety wraz ze wzrostem poziomu satysfakcji z życia istotnie rzadziej spożywały: pieczywo jasne (p<0,05) i mleko tłuste (p<0,05), a istotnie częściej: pieczywo razowe (p<0,05), ryż i makaron razowy (p<0,001), nasiona strączkowe (p<0,05), mleczne przetwory fermentowane (p<0,05), ryby (p<0,05), owoce morza (p<0,01), mięso wołowe (p<0,01) i soki warzywne (p<0,001). Porównanie średniej częstości konsumpcji produktów spożywczych w zależności od poziomu satysfakcji z życia (niski vs wysoki w skali SWLS) dowiodło, że kobiety o wysokiej satysfakcji z życia istotnie częściej spożywały pieczywo razowe (p<0,01), ryż i makaron razowy (p<0,001), sery twarogowe o obniżonej zawartości tłuszczu (p<0,05), owoce morza (p<0,05), mięso wołowe (p<0,001) i soki warzywne (p<0,05), a istotnie rzadziej słodycze i wyroby cukiernicze (p<0,05) niż kobiety o niskiej satysfakcji z życia.

The present article sheds light on the development of the model of femininity within the unification process of the new, united Italian state. In the new socio-economic reality the “women’s question” acquired fundamental significance, initiating debate on the concept of the “New Woman”, in other words a new feminine model to be redefined. An especially important aspect of the phenomenon described, is the contribution of women which, as demonstrated here using the example of the Milanese writer Anna Zuccari Radius, pseudonym Neera, provides an alternative perspective to the concepts propagated by the official culture.

The XIX century Polish evangelical opinion-forming circles emerged in the Kingdom of Poland.Their views were reflected in press, mainly in “Zwi-astun Evangeliczny – Evangelical Herald”.The leading representative of these circles was Leopold Otto, pastor in Warsaw and Cieszyn, editor of “Zwiastun”.Issues affecting women used to be quite frequent topics of sermons and articles. For evangelical circles woman had to be, above all, a wife, mother and good Christian that does not go beyond the frames of the “the 3 K’s” designation. Apart from the family and religious spheres no other role was allocated to women. However, she had to be mother and an active housewife running the household in a modern way as for those times.Any postulates of equality or professionalization of women were decidedly rejected.Any attempts aimed to change women's position and hierarchy of duties were treated as attempts to violate the moral order and, consequently, the social order as well.Woman had to be exclusively a good Christian, mother and wife. Those were her fundamental tasks necessary for the functioning of society. This pattern was, as a rule, observed in Protestant families in the Kingdom of Poland at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries.Similar pattern was followed in Catholic communities.

Almost thirty years after the publication of the above-mentioned book, it appears that women are still being judged on the basis of their appearance and not their competence.

In Senegal, where 94 per cent of the society are Muslims, the position of women differs from the most Islamic countries. The causes of this characteristic phenomenon are on the history, the religion, the philosophy and the pragmatism of Senegal. The fact that this country was for a very long time under different cultural and religious influences makes its people open-minded. Women participate in every field of activities. The main decisions in order to improve the situation of women, the equality of rights in the society, were taken since the Senegal's independence in 1960. That's why a Muslim woman in Senegal is able to carry out an active professional and social life, with keeping on her religious identity. There for the Senegalese society shows that Islam and modernity can exist in harmony. The Senegalese case shows also that Islam in Africa does not destroy native African culture.

The article presents modest attempts of women joining the discourse pertaining to national matters. Their significant but still underestimated contribution to the above-mentioned discourse was described on the basis of didactic and literary activity of Dragolja Jarnevic, Marija Jambrisak and Jagoda Truhelka. As the community important for the literature thriving, those creative teachers established the very first Croatian women's magazine titled 'Domace ognijste'. The magazines first issues were thoroughly analyzed with a special attention to national matters that were included in them. Those female writers and teachers mentioned in the text - although they were not able to get themselves out of the dominant male paradigm at the time - they undoubtedly prepared a sound foundation/ ground for more courageous gestures of other creative women of the future.
