Opis:
Over 100 of Poland's towns were investigated for the use of water and relevant variations in the past decade. The total amount of water which is used in those towns accounts for approximately 60% of the total water amount used for industrial and municipal purposes all over the country. Relevant data sets were processed so as to show the unit use in a respective town, as well as the rate of decrement in water use in the past decade. Analysis of variations in the use of water from municipal supply in the time span of 1987-1998 revealed a decrement in unit use, which varied from one town to another, but in the majority of them was greater than 30%. These data evidence that the continuing increase in water consumption observed in the post-war period has been inhibited, and that in the past decade there has been a noticeable decrease in the use of water. This finding substantiates the need of verifying the previously predicted quantities of water use in Poland's towns. Because of the lack of adequate data for assessing the duration of the new trends in municipal water consumption, it is necessary to adopt the principle of continuous analysis of annual water use in Poland's towns and continuous verification of the available forecasts. Having such data is a prerequisite for the development and modernization of municipal water supply systems, as well as for establishing adequate service charges.

Opis:
The quality of the water supplied to the user is generally claimed to be poor. Making use of the results obtained in 2000, a comparative assessment of drinking water quality was carried out in terms of former and present national regulations. It was found that the evaluated number of users exposed to excessive concentrations of ammonia, arsenic, b(a)p, trichloromethane, aluminium, cadmium, nitrates, chlorides and fluorides was the same, irrespective of whether the previous or the present water quality regulations were taken into account. However, when water quality was assessed in terms of recent regulations, the exposure to excessive concentration of iron and manganese became twice as high, to coloured matter 2.5 times as high, to turbidity 5 times as high, and to lead 70 times as high as when use was made of the former regulations. Excessive lead concentrations were detected predominantly in groundwater, which is generally regarded as being safe. On the basis of the results obtained, the following geneneralisations can be made: To reduce health hazards, it is necessary to implement advanced water treatment technologies. On the other hand, unlike the common belief, in 90% of instances the quality of drinking water supplied to the users is good, irrespective of whether assessed in previous or recent regulations.

Opis:
The combined water supply system being under responsibility of the Upper Silesian Water Board (USWB) basically supplies water to the industry, agriculture and population of Upper Silesia. This is the largest system of that kind operated in Poland and is rather unique in Europe. Water is sold at more than 800 points to water companies, which deliver water to the users in different cities. The ever decreasing water consumption by individual households and industry observed in recent years has brought about a considerable extension of the hydraulic residence time and a deterioration of water quality. The technical condition of the water-pipe network, the hydraulic parameters and water quality variations were analyzed on the example of a water distribution network operated by a local water company that purchases water from the USWB. The objective of the study was to assess the material and age of the pipes, residence time, flow velocity, pressure, as well as the physicochemical and bacteriological parameters at the points of purchase and other characteristic points along the network. Consideration was also given to the frequency of pipe failure and the resulting water loss. A clear definition of the factors that contribute to episodic or long-term deterioration of water quality made it possible to suggest some preventive measures (which had partly been implemented) to maintain or re-establish the desired quality of the water.
