Opis:
ASF has existed in Poland since 2014. The main vector of this disease is wild boar (Sus scrofa). Traditional baiting site is one of the most popular elements of wildlife infrastructure for wild boars hunting. Along with the development of ASF in Poland, the bait became an object of attention due to the high probability of contact between healthy and sick animals, and thus as a place of potential spread of the disease. Feeding is currently forbidden, but it is allowed to lure wild boar with small amounts of food for the needs of depopulation. The purpose of this study was to investigate what kind of species penetrate the bait as well as what are the seasonal and diurnal dynamics of bait penetration by different groups of animals. The tests were carried out in north−eastern Poland. Digital Trial Camera SGN−5220 were used to record animals within a radius of up to 10−15 m from the location of phototraps (at night). Once a month, 1 kg of maize was spread evenly over the surface of the bait, as is usually done in practice. During the 18−month of observation, 2929 pictures recorded 21 species of animals that penetrated the bait. They included 9 species of birds (from tit to cranes), 4 species of predators (fox, raccoon, raccoon dog, badger) and 4 species of ungulates (Polish horse, roe deer, fallow deer and deer). Animals that can contribute the most to ASF spread are predators, and among the birds: ravens, crows, jays and cranes. The animals penetrated the bait mainly during the night (except for birds), and the longest during one presence during autumn and winter. In the summer, the bait was penetrated by the largest number of species of wild animals (birds, predators, ungulates and of course wild boars). The question arises whether other places where potential food for wild animals is accumulated can also be a source of potential ASF spread.

One of the challenges facing wildlife conservation is how to change the way people perceive wildlife. Therefore this study examine wildlife conservation awareness and practices in some selected secondary school around Kainji Lake National Park. Data was collected through the use of pre tested structured questionnaires among six selected secondary school in the study area. The sample of the research was one hundred (100) respondents. Data was analysis using descriptive statistics. The findings reveals that majority of the respondents (74%) are male and age group 15-20 years had the highest with 43%. 63% of the respondents are aware of wildlife conservation in the study area and majority (66%) of the respondent has not visit the Kainji Lake National Park. 50% of the respondents had about wildlife through direct communication. 63% and 80% of the respondents are willing and are ready to support wildlife conservation in the study area. The finding still reveal that awareness is still lacking in most schools among the communities. Therefore more wildlife conservation awareness is needed in our various schools so as to get the interest of the students when they are still young so that generation coming will also be thought.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the most commonly identified Microsporidia in humans and has also been detected worldwide in a large group of wild living and domestic animals. The identification of E. bieneusi in wildlife has raised the question of the importance of animal reservoirs in the epidemiology of microsporidiosis and the implications of the infection with this pathogen in hosts. This review summarizes the available molecular data on the variety of E. bieneusi genotypes, both potentially zoonotic and host-specific isolated from wild living mammals and birds. In contrast to microsporidial infections of humans and domestic animals, wildlife deserves attention as a source of significant environmental reservoir of E. bieneusi.

Jedną z podejmowanych tam kwestii, były zagadnienia związane z ochroną przyrody i środowiska. O ich wysokiej randze świadczy utworzenie specjalnego „Podstolika ekologicznego”, gdzie były omawiane. Dyskusja nad mającym obowiązywać w Polsce kształtem ochrony przyrody, którą wtedy zainicjowano trwa do dziś.
Poland joined the system transformations` period with the definite legislative, institutional and political order. The order has been connected with the wildlife conservation issues, which have been in a specific way shaped in the social consciousness. The changes in this matter initiated the “Round Table” meeting in 1989, which started the national agreement and the reforms. The reforms have had the crucial meaning for our country. The issues of the wildlife and environment conservation have been one of the discussed topics. The special “Ecological Table” to discuss the above mentioned problems has been formed, which shows the importance of the topic connected with the wildlife and environment conservation. The shape of the wildlife conservation in Poland has been defined, which provoked the discussion until today. The existing regulations and the successive amendments to the wildlife conservation have been criticized. The initiatives indicating the desire solutions, including the necessity to obey the principles of the balanced development, have been taken. Can we answer the question concerning the future shape of the wildlife conservation in Poland now, although the discussion about it had been started almost 20 years ago?

Farmers/herder conflict has been a major national security issue in Nigeria. Despite all efforts of the government and other well-meaning Nigerians, the problem still lingers. This present study seeks to provide a different perspective in curtailing the existing problem. The study indicated that as long as beef remains the most prominent source of red meat in Nigeria, the problem will still persist. The benefits and the challenges of ostrich farming were then discussed. The study recommends that there is a need to publicise the health benefits of ostrich meat so as to attract more consumers and players in the industry.

Opis:
Nigeria has a vast array of both natural and cultural tourist attractions. The country’s tourism industry, however, remains grossly underdeveloped, and the tourism resources are largely untapped. Hence, the tourism sector of the economy is yet to contribute significantly to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). One major factor that is responsible for the nation’s current lacklustre performance of the tourism sector is the poor state of tourism packaging and promotion, which, amongst other things is caused by the lack of appropriate tourist maps. Tourism mapping is a key component of tourism planning, development, promotion and management. For Nigeria to drastically and significantly improve the fortunes of her tourism sector, the production, circulation and use of accurate, current and comprehensive tourist maps and atlases must be vigorously pursued. To ensure sustainable tourism mapping and in line with global best practices, the country needs to adopt a Geoinformation technology-based, Internet-compatible multimedia cartographic approach. The author of this paper, therefore, examines the current state of tourism industry and tourism mapping in Nigeria. Some of the hiccups to tourism mapping in the country are identified. The implications of the present poor state of tourism mapping on tourism planning, development, promotion and management in the country are briefly considered. The author makes a strong case for the adoption of a multimedia cartographic approach to tourism mapping in Nigeria. A case of mapping wildlife parks in Nigeria is presented to demonstrate the prospects of effective multimedia tourism mapping of the country. Furthermore, the author identifies and discusses various existing resources in the country that could be harnessed for efficient and sustainable production, distribution and use of multimedia tourist maps/atlases, using Geographical Information Technologies (GIT). Some potential challenges to effective GIT-based tourism mapping in the country as well as how such challenges could be overcome, are equally discussed. Similarly, a model for Web-based, multimedia tourism mapping using GIT is presented. With clear vision, the right policy instrument, mandate, legislation, funding and coordination in place, the current challenges to effective and sustainable tourism mapping in Nigeria can easily be surmounted.

Opis:
Subject and purpose of work: The study aims to assess the sustainability of rural areas of Western Himalayas during the year 2019. Materials and methods: Aquestionnaire-based survey was conducted in upper Beas Valley of Himachal Pradesh. A total of 101 individuals were interviewed and the questionnaire was filled by the surveyor. Results: Survey showed that high level of unemployment prevailed in the region with minimal monthly income. However, they engaged in agriculture and allied activities along with collection of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) to supplement their incomes. The proximity to protected areas led to frequent encounter with wildlife and such encounters increased after the commencement of Hydro Power Projects. Respondents believed that construction HPPs and expansion road network in the region has increased the occurrence of landslides; and many of them had lost their cultivated land due to landslides. Conclusions: The study showed rural areas of upper Beas Valley were moderately unsustainable.

Estimation of population abundance is one of the most difficult tasks in wildlife management. In case of forest−dwelling ungulates, none of the currently available survey methods is satisfying in terms of accuracy, precision, and cost−effectiveness. Therefore, we propose a new method of ungulate monitoring based on distance sampling and using unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with thermal infrared cameras. The method is potentially more reliable and cost−effective than conventional survey techniques. It also allows for aerial surveys in the dark when animals are most active. However, the method needs to be tested before wide−scale implementation in wildlife management practice. While the effects of sampling design and effort on accuracy and precision of abundance estimates are well recognized, the importance of population and habitat characteristics is often overlooked by wildlife managers. We used simulations to assess the effects of population size, animal aggregation, and habitat−depended detection probability on the accuracy and precision of wildlife aerial survey results. We created 1000 virtual populations defined by population density (2−22 individuals/100 ha), mean group size (1−6 individuals), and probability of animal detection during surveys (proportional to canopy cover, 30−60%). Animals were distributed on a virtual study area (5000 ha) according to randomly generated density distribution. Each population was subjected to 25 simulated surveys using the same design (39 transects grouped in three 2.0×2.5 km blocks). The transects covered 12% of the entire study area. We used conventional distance sampling to estimate abundance and generalized linear models to assess the effect of each parameter on the accuracy and precision of estimates. The estimation accuracy was mostly affected by the probability of detection (B=–0.75) and, to a lesser degree, by aggre− gation (B=–0.25) and population size (B=0.09). Precision was influenced by the aggregation (B=0.32) and population size (B=–0.26), while detection probability had a weaker effect (B=–0.11). Observed significant differences in quality of abundance estimates derived by the same survey design, but with differing population and habitat characteristics, indicate that each survey requires an individual approach. It is impossible to formulate general recommendations, e.g. concerning flight plan or area coverage. To achieve the required level of precision, while minimizing the survey costs, it is necessary to test alternative survey designs with the aid of computer simulations.

This paper historically traces the purposive domestication of pigeons in order to examine the dialectical relationship between nature and culture. It is demonstrated that each instance of the domestication of the pigeon for a new function (i.e., food, messenger) also entailed the construction of a role of the bird in human society, replete with symbolic representations and moral valuations. Yet it is also argued that, though animals are repositories for social meaning, and culture is literally inscribed into the physical structure of domesticated animals, such meanings are patterned and constrained according to the biological features of the animal itself. The ubiquitous and unwanted “street pigeon” now found around the globe is the descendent of escaped domestic pigeons, occupying the unique and ambiguous category of “feral”- neither truly wild nor domestic. Ironically, the very traits that were once so desirous and that were naturally selected for are now what make the feral pigeon so hard to get rid of and so loathsome.

Human wildlife conflict (HWC) occur when wildlife requirements encroach on those of human populations, with costs both to residents and wild animals. As a result, there is a growing recognition that solutions focused on wildlife alone limit managers ability to effectively resolve conflicts. This has necessitated a focus on management solutions on humans as well. Various interventions have been used to mitigate the HWC. Here, the focus is on the predator-proof bomas (PPBs), with the aim of answering the question: Do PPBs improve well-being of local people? 25 PPBs were constructed and monitored for a period of six months in Amboseli ecosystem. The livestock predation incidences, time spent guarding at night and people’s perceptions before and after the construction of the PPBs was compared to determine the social and economic changes. Results yielded a very strong significant change in the hours spend per week gurading, with some respondents spending only a day per week (t = 30.01, n = 25, p = 0.00001). An additional paired t –test revealed a significant change in the numbers of livestock attacks inside the homestead after the construction of the PPB (t = 10.258, n = 25, p = 0.00001). Generally, livestock killing cases and injuries went down by 87.3% and 50% respectively. Although there are opportunity costs associated with the installation of PPBs, on comparison the PPBs contributed positively to the well-being of the livestock keepers in Amboseli ecosystem.

The present study unfolds the diversity of ants of Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India. A total of 22 species under 13 genera distributed over 5 subfamilies could be recorded. These include three newly recorded species namely Leisiota frauenfeldi (Mayr) (Formicinae), Crematogaster (Acrocoelia) hodgsoni Forel (Myrmicinae) and Brachyponera nigrita Emery (Ponerinae) from the state and nearly 90.5% of the reported species are new for the district (marked*). Analysis of their zoogeographical distribution reveals that the fauna apart from being Oriental also includes some Palaearctic (72.73%), Australian (13.63%) and Ethiopian (4.54%) elements. The dominant functional group is constituted by the Subordinate Camponotini (36.37%) followed by Generalized Myrmicinae (22.73%), Tropical Climate Specialist (13.63%), Specialist Predator (9.09%), Opportunist (9.09%) and Dominant Dolichorinae (9.09%). Ants are mostly prevalent during Monsoon (81.82%), followed by Postmonsoon (68.18%) and Premonsoon (50.00%). Two species namely Camponotus (Tanaemyrmex) compressus (Fabricius) and Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricius) are recorded throughout the year. Ranking sequence of the most abundant species in descending order is: Camponotus (Tanaemyrmex) compressus (15.01%) = Oecophylla smaragdina (15.01%) > Crematogaster (Acrocoelia) hodgsoni (12.91%). Camponotus (Tanaemyrmex) compressus and Oecophylla smaragdina are the most dominant species. Data also reveals that both core and buffer zones conjointly offer a better combination of habitat requirement, as 12 species are common in both the zones. Highest no. of species are recorded from leaf litter and ground combined together (22 species) and 6 species are arboreal in nature. Shannon’s Diversity Index (α diversity) and Simpson’s Diversity Index both are higher in buffer zone. This reflects the habitat exploitation efficiency of the encountered species. As per Jaccard Index (β diversity) the similarity value of both the zones is only 0.55.

Birds are found in a variety of habitats, performing various functions. They are highly sensitive to even minor perturbation in ecosystems. Documentation of avian assemblages in different ecosystems is, therefore, becoming increasingly important from environmental monitoring perspective. In absence of comprehensive account of birds of Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary, West Bengal, India, we made an attempt to document the birds thriving in this protected area. A total of 102 species of birds belonging to 13 orders and 46 families were recorded during the study period (June 2013 – May 2016). Maximum number of species belong to the order Passeriformes (49 species) and minimum under order Anseriformes (1 species). Among the total bird species, 83 species (81.37%) were resident, 15 species (14.71%) were winter visitor, three species (2.94%) were summer visitor and one species (0.98%) was passage migrant. We noted 38 species of birds (including 36 residents and two summer visitors) to breed within the sanctuary. Analysis of feeding guild data revealed that 46.08% were insectivore, 22.55% were carnivore, 15.69% were omnivore, 6.86% were granivore, 5.88% were frugivore, 1.96% were nectarivore and 0.98% were herbivore. Grey-headed Fish Eagle (Icthyophaga ichthyaetus) and Red-breasted Parakeet (Psittacula alexandri) are two Near Threatened (NT) species designated by IUCN. Present study is the first scientific documentation of avian assemblage of this protected area and will serve as a baseline data for future avifaunal research, as well as, will be useful in the preparation of Peoples’ Biodiversity Register (PBR) of this area.

According to the author, in numerous aspects the assessment of the compliance with the Birds Directive can be carried out at the local level, taking into account elements such as habitat characteristics, the nature of the hunt or the degree of actual probability of the error due to the similarity of hunted and protected species. The thesis that pheasants and partridges can be considered as game only after the maturity of their own broods is too far-reaching. According to the author, the use of lead shot in areas of special protection may be considered incompatible with the protection requirements of these areas, and the practice of general exclusion of hunting plans from the requirement to undergo an impact assessment on a given area may be considered incompatible with the Habitats Directive.

Opis:
Wildlife passages are an important tool to reduce negative effects of transport infrastructure on habitat connectivity and animal population viability. The aim of our study was to evaluate the use of two underpasses by medium-sized mammals. Both underpasses are situated in the area of the Rogów Forests, Central Poland, one of which is located under a road and the other under railway tracks. We used camera traps to monitor every wildlife crossing between February 2016 and December 2017. Four wild mammal species (roe deer, brown hare, red fox, martens) as well as domesticated cats and dogs were registered in the vicinity of the road underpass. Except for roe deer, the underpass was used (i.e. animals entered) by all of the listed species. The underpass was mainly used by brown hares in spring and by wild as well as domestic carnivores in autumn. Brown hares used the underpass mostly between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., while foxes, cats and dogs at night. Near the underpass of the railway track, roe deer, wild boar, brown hare, red fox, raccoon dog, European badger, martens, European polecat as well as domestic dogs and cats were observed. Only wild boar and brown hare never entered the underpass. Roe deer used the underpass in May-June and September, wild carnivores in spring and dogs in summer. Only dogs used the underpass round the clock with roe deer, foxes, badgers and racoon dogs frequenting it at night. Domestic carnivores used both passages more often compared to wild mammals. Both underpasses were also heavily used by humans mostly in spring and at daytime. The usage of the underpasses by wildlife was strongly seasonal which could be related to increased animal locomotory acti- vity, i.e. during rut, dispersal of young. Furthermore, wild animals used the underpasses at night, when humans were less active indicating that human activity might have influenced the usage of the underpasses by wild mammals.

Opis:
This article examines the legal category sustainable use of wildlife as a process of realization of rights and obligations by the subjects, based on the provisions of the Concept of Sustainable Development, International law and National legislation on wildlife. This process is aimed at ensuring biological diversity, achieving a balance of economic, environmental and social interests of the citizens, society and the state as a whole, the process, as well as to preserve the reproductive ability of the animal world. Based on the analysis of certain provisions of the legislation on wildlife and law enforcement practice, the author makes a conclusion that Russia lacks a complex system of legal support measures for the sustainable use of wildlife. Legal, economic, ideological, organizational measures, proposed by the author of the article will make it possible to use wildlife in such a way, that will preserve and increase the number of wildlife populations, maintain an ecological balance, and ensure the needs in favorable environment for life and health for the present and future generations. The measures proposed by the author can create the legal basis for sustainable management of wildlife. The author suggests, that these measures can be useful in developing national programs for sustainable use of wildlife; providing incentives for the transition to sustainable use; strengthening the dialogue between the authorities and the population in order to involve them into the process of sustainable use of wildlife, so that to ensure a balance of economic, environmental and social interests.

Opis:
Wildlife traffickindg of endangered species is an international crime that is increasing in in terms of its significance and position in the global crime hierarchy. This phenomenon is a significant subject of research for both traditional and green criminology. The representatives of green criminology, when discussing the criminal policy in matters related to green crimes, refer to its broad meaning. From this perspective, “green criminal policy” includes: a) the legal and social approach, b) a regulatory system that emphasizes social arrangements, norms and reforms in the production and consumption system; and c) a system of social interactions. Each of these models is presented in the article. In this context, the results of qualitative research on the state of the social control of illegal trade in wild fauna and flora in Poland will also be cited.
