Opis:
During rescue excavations at the site Mucharz 12 carried out due to building of the water reservoir at Świnna Poręba on the border of the Middle and Small Beskidy Mts. unexpectedly traces of the Late Paleolithic settlement of Świdry culture were discovered, among them remains of two dwelling features. Besides them the site provided numerous Mesolithic artifacts, traces of Neolithic settlement, assemblages representing two different variants of Bronze Age Mierzanowice culture and finally remains connected with medieval occupation. Studies on stone artifacts demonstrated that mainly during the Mesolithic period local deposits of Mikuszowice hornstone were exploited. Presence of the artifacts made of raw materials coming from some distance sources (e.g. Jurassic flint) was confirmed as well. Presented results put new light on the problem of detectability of archaeological sites within mountain zones of southern Poland, as well as on the character of prehistorical settlement traces on the territory.

It is not easy to present point of view by Oswald Spengler In his work under the title, Der Untergang des Abendlandes. The philosophy which is present in this book the former researchers have appreciationed as weakly work in academic version. It is not clear if they have had right or not. Opinions are sometimes wrong. In Polen the strictly opinion of such book gave polish philosopher feliks Koneczny, who has known Spengler personality, and apart from this he has red his books quite well. Nowadas, the philosophy of O. Spengler has not great interest, because few people are interested in Spengler philosophy. Thank to Heinz Pascher we have possibility to recall the philosophy horizon once more. however Spengler’s philosophy is a little forgotten. There are few thinkers or theoretical rsearch they keep up thata kind of subject, the reason of such situation is not quite clear.

Opis:
The author aims at both reviewing the previous sociological studies devoted to the Western Lands as well as proposing the project for the future studies on this area. According to the author, the major drawback of the previous research is its strict focus to the region. The up to date research was primarily considering the two groups of factors: the ones contributing to the emergence of an integrated community at the Western Lands or the ones influencing the acceleration of the Western Lands' integration with the rest of the country. In these studies the key categories were normalization, stabilization, adaptation and assimilation. Yet, the author contends that by far more intriguing research agenda lies in the question of if and how the novel post-war shape of the Polish state has been internalized by the society. This research agenda is of particular relevance to the students of political culture. The research on the Western Lands has to be brought onto national level. In new research focused on political culture the issues of the transformation of historical consciousness and Polish national identity shall gain the prime importance.

Opis:
The author undertakes the problem of the identity of Western civilization in the light of a correlation between politics and religion. First, he traces the theoretical debates about the mutual correspondence of politics and religion in ancient Greece. Following two extreme errors depicted by Sophocles in his “Antigone,” and by Plato in his “Apology of Socrates,” he infers that the “Golden Mean” is necessary in resolving the problem of politics and religion. Then, he examines the underlying errors put forward in the history. His investigations show the erroneousness of endowing either politics or religion with sovereign status in culture. There is always a conflict between politics and religion unless man regains his own sovereignty from them. Ultimately the author arrives at the conclusion that the “Golden Mean” correlating politics and religion distinctly strengthens the identity of the Western Civilization, and consists in respecting all real and universal parameters of human person life, such as cognition, freedom (and responsibility), love, agency in law, ontological sovereignty, and religious dignity.

Opis:
This article explores the notion of chamber graves of the Bylany culture (Ha C – Ha D1) from selected sites in north-western Bohemia. The analytical part of the paper examines direct and indirect evidence for the occurrence of such wooden features in grave-pits. Further sections present the negative effects which the post-depositional processes may have had on the archaeological material. The major part of this study discusses the functions, techniques and forms of chamber graves and explores the diversity of such features with regard to their construction, arguing that the main evidence that proves the existence of a chamber is a wooden roof. In result of the conducted analyses the authors propose several reconstructions of different variants of chambers of the Bylany culture. The occurrence of chambers is traditionally associated with a group of largest and most lavishly equipped graves with parts of horse harness, wagons and weapons. However, a thorough analysis of cemeteries of the Bylany culture in north-western Bohemia has revealed that also modestly furnished graves may have contained chambers. The problems discussed within this paper may form a basis for future interpretations of the social structure of Hallstatt period societies

Opis:
The aim of the present article is a presentation of Wilhelm Reich’s works as one of the most important intellectual foundations of postmodernity. Particularly the propagated by Reich sexual revolution constitutes the kernel of contemporary cultural changes in the West. An important point of reference for Reich were the revelations of Bronisław Malinowski on the sexual life of savages. These convinced Reich that there is no necessary conflict between the satisfaction of sensual desires and cultural life, as Sigmund Freud proclaimed. In order to overcome the dualism between nature and culture in the western culture Reich deconstructed the ecclesiastic image of Jesus Christ. Instead of a savior Reich suggested that one should see in Jesus a man who proclaimed reconciliation between the forces of nature and the social life. In this way Reich tried to convince that in place of ascetic moral values the ones that promote sexual liberty and individual satisfaction should be placed. I will try to demonstrate that the ideas of Reich constitute a fundamental intellectual source of the contemporary western culture.

In the internal discourse, Europe served (and still holds) as a reference point for self-identification of the Russians and the search for civilization solutions. The article also presents historical and cultural background of the relationship between Russia and Europe.

This article argues that, strictly speaking, from its inception with the ancient Greeks and for all time, philosophy and science are identical and consist in an essential relationship between a specific type of understanding of the human person as possessed of an intellectual soul capable of being habituated and a psychologically-independent composite whole, or organization. It maintains, further, that absence of either one of the extremes of this essential relationship cannot be philosophy/science and, if mistaken for such and applied to the workings of cultural institutions, will generate anarchy within human culture and make leadership excellence impossible to achieve. Finally, it argues that only a return to this “common sense” understanding of philosophy can generate the leadership excellence that can save the West from its current state of cultural and civilizational anarchy.

the history of research
Opis:
The history of archaeological research on the Trypillian sites in the western regions of Ukraine can be subdivided into four stages, each of which is marked by certain achievements. The first explorations resulted in the discovery of new archaeological objects, which gave rise to the discussion about the interpretation of constructions and functions of the settlements. The questions related to chronology, periodization, and excavation methodology were discussed as well. However, this activity was irregular and spontaneous, and the materials of many sites were scattered over different museums of Europe. The later stages of research gave very important data about the material and sacral components of the Trypillian culture, as well as its development, ways of adaptation to natural conditions, relative chronology of the sites, and their distribution. In the last years, the systematic excavations conducted at the reference site of Bodaki shed an important light on the economic basics of Trypillia. They also gave new materials for reconstructing the connections between the north-western and central areas of the culture, and its connections with the coeval farming-herding cultures of Europe.

Opis:
Since most pressing today on a global scale is to be able to unite religion, philosophy, and science into parts of a coherent civilizational whole, and since the ability to unite a multitude into parts of a coherent whole essentially requires understanding the natures of the things and the way they can or cannot be essentially related, this paper chiefly considers precisely why the modern world has been unable to effect this union. In so doing, it argues that the chief cause of this inability to unite these cultural natures has been because the contemporary world, and the West especially, has lost its understanding of philosophy and science and has intentionally divorced from essential connection to wisdom. Finally, it proposes a common sense way properly to understand these natures, reunite them to wisdom, and revive Western and global civilization.

In the present paper I will discuss some of Ryszard Legutko’s ideas about the concept of tolerance; with particular emphasis on the distinction between the negative and positive tolerance (passive and active, respectively). I will sketch the historical background of this distinction and describe the extra- ordinary career of the notion of positive tolerance in the context of modern Occidental culture, concluding with the idea of “tolerantionism”. Finally, I will try to introduce a few objections to Legutko’s critical approach to tolerance, taking into account not only the coherence, but also the development (creativity) of European culture and Western Civilization. Legutko’s vision can be described as conservative, mine is rather “oscillating”. When a culture be- comes too monolithic, it is natural to encourage more pluralism; however, if there is excessive pluralism, then monism should be promoted (triumph and absolute domination of the only one ideal – even the right one – tends to be harmful not only for the social freedom, but also for this same ideal; absolute power corrupts).

The “new atheism” and the “new evangelization” have become the buzzwords of the age. Atheism is now the fastest growing “religious” group in the United States; the new evangelization decisively shaped the conclave that elected Jorge Bergoglio to the papacy. Twenty years ago, in Crossing the Threshold of Hope, John Paul II reflected pastorally on some of the philosophical, spiritual, and cultural roots of both. His insights, embodied in Christians who live them, offer the Church a key to our times. If evangelization today is to announce the Gospel in the languages of today, what script might it use? What images might it evoke? What might its cadence be like?

The article aims to present how the classical American western formula is used to build and preserve memory about Silesian history. Jozef Kłyk, one of the most recognizable amateur fi lm makers from the Silesia region, adopted the classical western form to tell stories based on Silesian emigration to Texas in the nineteenth century. He was inspired by Andrzej Brozek’s work: Ślązacy w Teksasie. Relacje o najstarszych osadach polskich w Ameryce (1972) and since late 1970s, together with the local community members of Bojszowy village he has been making films telling the stories of Silesian emigrants and, through these stories, presenting Silesian culture and tradition. Kłyks’ activities exemplify Alison Landsberg’s observations on the crucial role of mass culture in creating memory, which she calls the prosthetic memory – a new form of cultural memory in which mass culture texts act as a prosthesis between an individual and a historical narrative about the past.

Cinematographic shows were held in Pomerelia several months after the invention of the Lumiere brothers had been presented for the first time in Paris. At the beginning of the 20th century such shows, originally organised as touring forms of entertainment, were very popular both in the major and smaller towns of the region. The fascination with the new medium affected the whole population irrespective of the ethnic origin of the inhabitants of the region. WW I resulted in an increased ideologisation of cinematography; the forms of state control over the content of films became stricter. In the interwar period, cinematography became an element of cultural competition between Poland and Germany. The prevalence and popularity of film along with the influx of American images influenced the morality and mentality of people living in the Pomeranian voiodeship in the interwar period.
