Opis:
Ongoing magnetostratigraphic and geochemical studies (including major and trace element geochemistry and stable isotopes of C, N, O) in the Canadian Rocky Mountains are providing insight into the paleoenvironmental changes of the mid-Frasnian punctata Event, a prominent marine geochemical perturbation. The data is evaluated with 1) a regional sequence stratigraphic perspective and 2) within the context of a rapidly changing Late Devonian world, characterized by numerous sedimentological and faunal perturbations leading up to the eventual Frasnian-Fammenian (F/F) mass extinction. Proxies for bottom water paleoredox conditions (Mo, V, U), oceanic primary productivity (δ13Corg, δ15Nbulku, Cu, Ni, Ba), changes in detrital input (Si, Al, K, Ti, Zr), and magnetic susceptibility display similar trends, indicating that these proxies and MS variations are inherently linked. The observed excursions suggest that changes in detrital input were the main driver of a bioproductivity increase. Elevated organic matter export from the photic zone likely led to the deposition and later preservation of organic-carbon rich facies under facilitated conditions of bottom water suboxia-anoxia. These geochemical trends were likely influenced by eustatic sea level change, but may have been enhanced by pulses of coincident orogenic activity and pulses of terrestrial afforestation. The rise and expansion of the first true forests is thought to have drastically altered nutrient fluxes to the oceans via increases in pedogenesis and the expansion of a mature soil profile. Our work is intended to complement the growing body of research aimed at elucidating the causes and understanding the effects of terrestrial and marine events of the P. punctata biozone and, more broadly, at understanding the Earth-system changes of the Late Devonian leading up to the F/F boundary.

Opis:
The biostratigraphy of the uppermost Cenomanian – Lower Turonian succession in the lower part of the Blackstone Formation exposed in the Ram River (Alberta, Canada), is interpreted in terms of the standard inoceramid/ ammonite zonation of the interval. Four successive inoceramid zones are recognized, those of Inoceramus pictus, Mytiloides puebloensis, M. kossmati, and M. mytiloides, as established in the stratotype section at Pueblo, Colorado. Their correlation to Pueblo is confirmed by ammonite data. The mid-Early Turonian zone of M. kossmati yielded an assemblage of Inoceramus, with species showing close affinity to the latest Cenomanian lineages. This multi-species sample proves the survival of Inoceramus lineages into the otherwise Mytiloides-dominated Early Turonian, and indicates that their disappearance from the record of the North American Western Interior was not because of their extinction. It is suggested that the apparent lack of Inoceramus in Lower Turonian strata is due to an extremely low population abundance in the Early Turonian sea.

Listracanthus pectenatus

Opis:
Listracanthus pectenatus sp. nov. represents the youngest record of the enigmatic chondrichthyan Listracanthus. This new species is the only Mesozoic record of this genus and highlights survival of a rare and enigmatic group of cartilaginous fishes across the Paleozoic–Mesozoic boundary. In the Vega−Phroso Siltstone Member of the Sulphur Mountain Formation (western Canada), two kinds of numerous dermal denticles identified as Listracanthus occur predominantly in strata probably of early Smithian age. The new species differs from all other known species of the genus in the structure of the anterior and posterior borders of the large denticles. The small denticles appear to be less diagnostic than the large ones and are readily distinguished from small denticles generally assigned to the genus Petrodus. Histology reveals that the largest denticles were originally hollow, probably secondarily ossified as acellular bone. The conclusion drawn by previous authors that Listracanthus may be a petalodontid shark, based on ambiguous non−skeletal associations with Deltoptychius, Petrodus, or Calopodusis not supported by this study. The large number of denticles, the size of both types of denticles and their arrangement suggest that Listracanthus pectenatus sp. nov. was a large chondrichthyan of aberrant body shape and yet uncertain systematic position.
