Opis:
Introduction and aim. Serum ceruloplasmin level may be a biomarker associated with obesity and cardiovascular risk. We aimed to evaluate the effect of body weight lost by diet and exercise program on metabolic parameters and serum ceruloplasmin levels in obese patients. Material and methods. A total of 120 obese patients with BMI ≥30 kg/m2 were enrolled in a 16-week balanced diet program with the goal of losing 10% or more of body weight while maintaining a daily energy deficit of 500-1000 kcal/day. Results. Mean weights of the patients decreased from 93.2±15.1 kg to 83.2±13.1 kg (p<0.001) and mean BMI decreased from 35.8±5.6 kg/m2 to 31.9±4.9 kg/m2 (p<0.001). Mean ceruloplasmin decreased from 25.2±4.7 mg/dL to 23.6±4.9 mg/dL (p<0.001), mean total cholesterol from 191.8±37.1 mg/dL to 153.8±28.7 mg/dL (p<0.001), mean LDL from 120.3±31.4 mg/dL to 91.1±27.7 mg/dL (p<0.001) and mean fasting blood glucose from 108.2±35 mg/dL to 103.3±81.1 mg/dL (p<0.001). There was a statistically significant and weak correlation between the change in ceruloplasmin and the change in BMI (p=0.016, R=0.233). There was a statistically significant and weak correlation between ceruloplasmin change and weight change (p=0.010, R=0.251). Conclusion. Obese patients’ serum ceruloplasmin levels were found to decrease with weight loss.

Opis:
Introduction: Bariatric surgery is the most effective method of weight reduction among patients suffering from morbid obesity. Reduction of body weight before surgery is an important element. Aim: The aim of the study was to present the current knowledge on preoperative weight reduction and diet for this purpose. Material and methods: To achieve the aims of the paper, we used articles available in the PubMed/MEDLINE database published in 2005–2020, as well as the guidelines of societies such as Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Chapter of the Association of Polish Surgeons, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, The Obesity Society and American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, International Federation for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders-European Chapter and European Association for the Study of Obesity. Results: Studies show that even a modest reduction in weight in the early preoperative period facilitates surgery and reduces the number of complications. The available data do not support the effect of preoperative weight loss on increased postoperative weight loss. The use of balanced, energy-restricted diet in the preoperative period prepares the patient for changes in the way of nutrition, which improves the nutritional status of patient. Low calorie (LCD) or very low calorie (VLCD) diet can be an effective method of weight loss before surgery, however, this approach does not allow to modify eating habits. The use of a very low calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) remains under discussion. Conclusion: There is a need for large randomized trials to assess short- and long-term benefits of preoperative weight loss and methods of weight loss among patients qualified for bariatric surgery, also the standardization of nutritional management in the preoperative period.

The presence of a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract constitutes a common pathology, considering surgical clinical practice. The management of the ingestion of a foreign body depends on many factors. The study presented a case of a 33-year-old female patient subjected to surgical treatment, due to deliberate swallowing of a balloon. The above-mentioned was the amateur equivalent of intragastric balloon insertion, inducing weight loss. This is a rare cause of a foreign body ingestion, seldomly found in literature data. The patient reported to the Emergency Department on the second day after ingestion with symptoms of mechanical subobstruction, and after initial diagnostics, was qualified for surgery. The postoperative period proved uneventful. The study illustrated the often unfavourable access to false data on the internet, which may stimulate towards the above-mentioned behaviour.

Effect of thermomechanical modification of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) wood on machine sanding efficiency. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of thermomechanical modification of pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) on the efficiency of machine sanding. For this purpose, pine wood samples (undensified and densified) were subjected to mechanical sanding. The effect of the modification on the mass loss in the sanding process was investigated and the quality of the obtained surface was examined. Roughness parameters Ra and Rz were used as criteria for the quality of the sanded surface. The study was carried out for three different grit sizes of sanding paper. It was found that the thermomechanical modification of Scots pine wood had a statistically significant effect on the mass loss during sanding and the roughness of the obtained surface. Wood samples subjected to thermomechanical compaction were characterised by lower susceptibility to sanding measured on the basis of weight loss and lower surface roughness.

Opis:
Termites are insects that can damage buildings, paper and plants. Termites are controlled by using termiticides (chemicals). Besides polluting the environment, termiticides may have harmful effects to organisms, including humans, and destroy metal. The use of chemicals will be environmentally and economically profitless. A joint effort to utilize biodegradable material will help to reduce the negative impacts of termiticides. One of the materials that can use to control termites is chitosan. The purpose of this study was to determine the termiticidal activity of chitosan on paper against termites. The termiticidal activity test followed method JIS K 1571 2004. The resistance of paper to termite damage was determined by calculating the percentage of weight loss and termite mortality rate. The following concentrations of chitosan in acetic acid were used: 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2%. The test result showed that weight loss percentages were 20.49%, 16.37%, 15.77% and 10.80%, respectively. On the other hand, the weight loss percentage of paper without chitosan was 32.69%, which shows that termites do not favour chitosan used in the paper. The activity of termites was successfully inhibited when the concentration of chitosan was increased, and the percentage of paper weight loss decreased from 10.80% to 20.49%. Paper without chitosan had a termite mortality rate of 18.3%; The addition of chitosan increased termite mortality to 28.2%–30.4%. The percentage of weight loss decreased with increasing termite mortality. The termite mortality rate show that chitosan is nontoxic and potential as biotermiticide for paper.

This study investigated the characterization of Ficus exasperata extract and the optimization of the process variables on inhibition of mild steel in seawater environment. Box Behnken Design was employed to examine the influence of three process variables: Temperature: 25-29 °C; Time: 3 – 6 days; Inhibitor concentration: 1-5 v/v. Phytochemical screening of the extract was done. The physicochemical constituents of the seawater were also determined. The experimental data was statistically determined and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used to characterize the mild steel. The result of the phytochemical screening of the Ficus exasperata plant extract (FEPE) showed the presence of contain inhibitive constituents: alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids and glycosides. The highest inhibition efficiency of 86.31% at a temperature of 29 ℃ for 6days at an inhibition concentration of 3v/v was observed from the experimental run. The optimal process levels of time: 5.74 days, temperature: 27.95 ℃ and inhibitor concentration: 2.90v/v, gave 87.52% as its inhibition efficiency. The result of the SEM from the optimal process level validated showed that more passive film was formed which can be attributed to the adsorption of the Ficus exasperata extract. It can be concluded that the Ficus exasperata was a good eco-friendly inhibitor.

Ingeo® PLA (polylactic acid) knitted fabric was scoured through an exhaust technique. The scouring was carried out with sodium carbonate in the presence of a detergent at various concentrations and temperatures. The scoured fabric was bleached with various oxidative bleaching agents. Bleaching was carried out with hydrogen peroxide, sodium chlorite and sodium hypochlorite. Hydrogen peroxide was applied by exhaust and cold pad batch (CPB) techniques. It was observed that during scouring PLA fabric was degraded at high alkali concentrations and processing temperatures. The scouring temperature above 60oC proved to be deleterious due to the scouring solution penetrating into the polymer structure and damaged the fiber. Sodium chlorite and sodium hypochlorite caused little damage to the mechanical properties of PLA. Hydrogen peroxide when applied by the CPB technique did not reduce strength appreciably but when applied by the exhaust technique decreased the strength significantly. SEM analysis revealed that hydrogen peroxide caused holes and slit formation in the fiber structure.

Background. In the elderly, nutrition significantly influences biological aging and physiological and pathological changes in the body. A balanced diet and physical activity are the key to good physical and mental health. Objective. The aim of this study was: (1) to perform nutritional screening tests in senior citizens residing in eastern Poland and (2) to evaluate the risk of malnutrition in elderly people who live with their families, seniors who live independently, and residents of nursing homes. Material and method. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) screening tool comprising a questionnaire with 22 questions and an abbreviated and survey-adapted version of the questionnaire (KomPAN) were used to investigate eating habits and self-perception of health and nutrition. A total of 398 correctly filled out questionnaires were selected and the resulting data were subjected to statistical analyses in the Statistica 10 program. Results. The BMI values of most respondents were indicative or malnutrition or risk of malnutrition, regardless of gender (mean BMI 23.88 kg/m2 ±5.08). Most overweight and obese respondents were female (p=0.0001). The observed decreased BMI values was significantly (p=0.0012, rs= 0.6714) correlated with lower food intake. Unintentional weight loss greater than 3 kg was most frequently noted in respondents living in nursing homes and living independently (p=0.0021). Eating difficulties also considerably influenced the respondents’ nutritional status. The respondents’ BMI values were significantly correlated (p<0.0001) with their MNA scores, the average MNA score was 21.0±4.4, (rs = 0.7293). Overweight and obese respondents were more likely to consume at least three meals daily (OR=1.87; 95% CI: 1.32-2.06; p<0.001). Conclusions. The BMI values and MNA scores of the tested subjects indicate that the majority of the surveyed respondents were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition, regardless of gender. In the present study, the residential environment significantly influenced the patients’ nutritional status, in particular in respondents with impaired motor abilities and eating difficulties.

Serum cystatin C concentration, generally accepted as renal function marker, is associated with cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome. Recent studies indicate that cystatin C increases in human obesity and that adipose tissue contributes to enhanced serum cystatin C concentration in obese subjects. The aim of the study was to assess whether a reduction in body and fat mass after bariatric surgery has any impact on serum cystatin C concentrations.Material and methods. Serum from 27 obese patients were tested before and 6 months after bariatric surgery. Twenty healthy subjects with normal body weight served as controls. Serum cystatin C concentrations were assayed by ELISA.Results. Serum cystatin C concentrations were significantly higher in obese patients compared with non-obese subjects. Decrease of body and fat mass after bariatric surgery resulted in improvement of several parameters associated with cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome, like serum lipids, blood pressure and insulin sensitivity. Surprisingly the mean postoperative serum cystatin C concentration was not significantly different from that before surgery. Serum creatinine and GFR also remained unchanged.Conclusion. The results presented here suggest that serum cystatin C concentration is not tightly associated with body and fat mass loss in obese patients after bariatric surgery.

The corrosion inhibition of aluminium alloy in 0.5M H2SO4 solution in the presence of zinc gluconate at 301 K was investigated using weight loss and an electrochemical method. Surface analysis of the aluminium alloy sample was reviewed by a high resolution scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (HRSEM/ EDS). The readings were taken after 48 h for 28 days while the concentration of the inhibitor was varied from 0.5 to 2.0% g/v with an interval of 0.5. The result of the investigation shows that zinc gluconate has a good corrosion inhibition effect for aluminium alloy in 0.5 molar sulphuric acid solution and its efficiency attains more than 67% at 1.5% g/v concentration of zinc gluconate at 301 K. The potentiodynamic polarization data showed that zinc gluconate acts as a mixed type corrosion inhibitor. The adsorption of zinc gluconate on aluminium alloy has been found to obey Freundlich adsorption isotherm at all the concentration of zinc gluconate studied. The results obtained from different methods are in good agreement.

Petroleum oils are the limited earth resources in which the variety of their chemical compositions are mostly composed of hydrocarbons and some trace compounds. Oils also contain various corrosive compounds. In the existing research, the major objective was the investigations of the impacts of such corrosive compounds within two different types of petroleum oils on the corrosion rates of seven different types of ferrous metals. As the methodology, the major corrosive properties of two different types of crude oils and chemical compositions of seven different types of metal were measured by standard instruments and methods. The corrosion rates of prepared metal coupons from seven different types of metals were determined by the relative weight loss method after immersion time periods separately in both crude oils in order of 15, 30 and 45 days, while qualitatively analyzing the corroded metal surfaces by optical microscope. In addition, the decayed ferrous and copper concentrations from metals into crude oils after immersion were measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy, while the status of the initial hardness of metal coupons were measured by the Vicker’s hardness tester. According to the obtained results, we saw higher corrosive stability from stainless steels which have chemical compositions of at least 12% of chromium with sufficient amounts of nickel, while in other steels, we noted relatively higher progress of the corrosion process regarding salts at lower temperatures, formations of FeS, Fe2O3, corrosion cracks and pits on the corrosion metal surfaces, significant decays of ferrous and copper from some metals into crude oils and slight reductions of the initial hardness of most metal types due to the corrosion.
