This article seeks to verify the established view that the King Sigismund III of Poland (1587–1632) bears the main blame for deepening religious conflicts in Poland during his reign because of actions and omissions resulting from his intolerant attitudes. The fact that the few commotions could not be prevented can be explained by the fact that then the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was not a police state. On the other hand the impunity of the perpetrators was the result of the state judiciary in Poland. Moreover, without change of a "constitutional law" it was impossible to enactment of the so-called process of the Confederation of Warsaw, the allegations of propaganda laying blame at the king’s door for violations of religious peace and support of the Union of Brest were to raise the non-Catholic nobility to support the activities organized by political opponents of Sigismund III Vasa. A great number of occasional writings containing those accusations, which occurred also in the statements of the many noble conventions and lack of the knowledge on the specifics of political system in Poland created – also in historiography – the thesis of Sigismund III Vasa as most intolerant of the Polish kings.

The aim of the article is to show the scale of Anna Vasa’s (1568-1625) literary patronage and her role in the literary culture of the Commonwealth at the beginning of the 17th century. The Infanta’s ambitions to become a patron of Protestant culture in the Polish-Lithuanian state succumbing to Catholicism have been fulfilled. The most significant testimonies of this patronage are the works of Evangelicals: the monumental “Postylla” by Samuel Dambrowski, “Florilegium ex Paradiso Psalmorum” by Valerius Herberger or “Heraclitus” by Samuel Bolestraszycki. Anna Vasa’s influence on the literary culture of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the first twenty years of the 17th century is also demonstrated by the group of Catholic writers who offered her their works. They include, among others: Andrzej Zbylitowski, Stanisław Grochowski, Jan Achacy Kmita, Jerzy Cerazyn, Wawrzyniec Chlebowski. An additional value of this patronage is that the dedications and literary works show the deeds and personality of the princess. The abundance of texts related to Infanta makes the literature connected with the remarkable biography of an independent, well-educated woman, protector of natural scientists, as well as evangelical writers and theologians. The analysis of the royal patronage leads to the another conclusion that in the research on the writings of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the aspect of at least trilingualism of the contemporary literature, which was written in Polish, Latin and German, should be more widely considered.

Opis:
The marriage concluded in Vilnius in 1562 between John, Duke of the Finnland from the Hause of Vasa, and Katarzyna Jagiellonka, sister of the Polish King Sigismund Augustus, proved to be fateful for the history of Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. A son born from this marriage, the future King Sigismund III began Vasa dynasty in the Commonwealth. It is puzzling that little sources left to the same wedding and related events. The article summarizes a few references preserved in the archives of Polish and Lithuanian public and private provenance, which are preserved in the holdings of the Central Archives the Central Historical Records.
