    Muranów, or about land clearing The article is a review of “Festung Warschau” by Elżbieta Janicka which maps the clash between the recently built monuments celebrating Jewish or Polish places of martyrdom from the times of Second World War. Janicka walks through the streets of the former Jewish neighbourhoods of Warsaw; she photographs and discusses the new plaques, crosses, monuments, and other forms of public marking of history on the buildings, squares and streets. She convincingly shows that the new historical commemorative signs of Polish martyrdom are often placed in the sites that were marked by Jewish resistance or suffering, and that the marks of Polish suffering are rarely linked materially to the site. The new monuments obstruct and hide the past presence of Warsaw Jews and, by submerging their past, create a new vision of ethnically cleansed history of Warsaw, especially in its relation to Second World War. The review applauds the book and rejects some of the criticism against it.

    The Polish – Polish war on the territory of IsraelThe text deconstructs a documentary film Betar by Robert Kaczmarek and Piotr Gontarczyk. The author carries out the analysis adopting two approaches. Firstly, she confronts the factographic side of the film against other sources reporting the events presented in the film. The author also proves that although it has pretensions to being a historiographic work, Betar is, in fact, constructed on the founding myths of the Israeli Zionism. Secondly, she analyses the film as the authors’ viewpoint on Polish fascism and Polish anti-Semitism concealed under the guise of objectifying narrative of a documentary. Seen from such a perspective, Betar perfectly fits into the Polish historical politics. Discussing the issue of Jews in Poland in the pre-war and war times, the film disregards the context of dominance and abuse, that is the majority-minority context; and what is more, it neutralises the Polish anti-Semitism presenting it as equal to the right-wing Zionism as well as an answer to Jewish nationalism.

    This article focuses on Seweryn Pollak’s poetry, despite him being known first and foremost as an essayist and translator. Although meeting mixed and negative reviews (including his own), Pollak’s poetry is not only a space where personal and fascinating accounts, memories, conversations with the loved ones, and farewells collide, but also the precise genre which the author chooses to talk of his Jewish ancestry, which is left unmentioned in his narrative works, including those addressed to his family and friends. Among Pollak’s poems, there are texts devoted to the Shoah that actualise the sense of danger and alienation; these painful recollections, although dictated by fear, happen to be the poems where self-reflection becomes sharp and thorough, whilethe poetic persona – predominant. Searching for an insightful perspective on Pollak and his work, this article turns to his captivating handwritten texts with a special emphasis put on the collections of letters exchanged between him and his wife, Wanda Grodzieńska.  
    Artykuł przybliża sylwetkę Seweryna Pollaka, znanego przede wszystkim jako tłumacz i eseista, oraz koncentruje się na jego twórczości poetyckiej. Liryka autora Wypraw za trzy morza, oceniana różnie, często krytycznie (również przez niego samego), jest miejscem niezwykłych, osobistych wyznań, wspomnień, rozmów z najbliższymi i pożegnań. To tu, w poezji, Pollak mówi także o swoim żydowskim pochodzeniu, o którym milczy w tekstach prozatorskich, nawet adresowanych do bliskich. Istotne miejsce w lirycznych tomach Pollaka zajmują wiersze zawracające ku Zagładzie, aktualizujące poczucie zagrożenia i obcości. W utworach rozdrapujących rany pamięci, dyktowanych przez lęk, rozpoznanie siebie jest przenikliwe i śmiałe, a poetyckie „ja” –  najwyraźniejsze. Poszukując możliwie szerokiej perspektywy dla przedstawienia Pollaka, autorka odwołuje się do interesujących materiałów rękopiśmiennych – zwłaszcza do tomów korespondencji poety z żoną Wandą Grodzieńską.

    The Author examines the presentation of the German occupation at the Warsaw Rising Museum and in Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory in Krakow. Initially, she studies the space of these exhibitions and demonstrates that the Warsaw Rising Museum has some characteristics of reflective space, while the exhibition at the Schindler’s Factory is primarily a projective one. Then, she points out that both museums treat artefacts as illustrations of their stories, as a consequence of which they are simulations of the past rather than material testimonies of what had happened. Finally, the Author argues that the Warsaw Rising Museum primarily tells the story of glory of the Polish nation, while the Schindler Factory focuses on the social history. In conclusion the Author points out that none of the exhibitions breaks the existing taboos or offers a new approach to the past. Both museum stories perfectly reflect the shape of the Polish social memory of World War II. Differences in the way they present the past are a result of rooting each of the stories in different public debates that were conducted in Poland after 1989.

    This article is an attempt to recreate the biography of Zdzisław Askanas (1910–1974), one of the greatest Polish cardiologists and founder of a cardiology school, mentor of numerous physicians, social worker, proponent of cardiac disease prevention, professor of the Medical University of Warsaw, and participant in the September 1939 campaign and Warsaw Uprising.
