Opis:
The events of 1809, in so-called East Galicia, are still a gap in historiography. Piotr Strzyżewski's expedition belongs to little known episodes. He intended to overcome and join the largest territories under Austrian partition to the liberated lands. The effects of his efforts were much more modest, for they depended on Napoleon I's decision and negotiations with Emperor Franciszek I. It is worth emphasising the scope of Strzyżewski's actions and the attitude of Polish society. It was manifested, among other things, by the large number of volunteers who conscripted to the Polish army. It should also be stressed that the military successes of Poles were considerable.

The paper discusses the diplomatic manoeuvres about Gdańsk during the whole period of its position in the orbit of Napoleonic influences, i.e. in the years of 1807-1814. The author presented the endeavours taken by the empires: France, Russia, and Prussia for this territory. He also discussed in detail any steps taken by the representatives of the city on the political arena. They intended to ensure the best economic conditions possible for Gdańsk. After Napoleon's defeat in 1813, the city became a venue of political horse-trading between AlexanderI and the other members of the anti-French coalition. Also during the Vienna Congress there were some discrepancies between the main empires with regard to this issue.

1812-1813 war
Opis:
In the beginning of December 1812 the situation of the Napoleonic army retreating from Russia was very difficult. The multinational Grand Army, exhausted by a long campaign, was only a wreck of the army that in the summer had marched to Moscow. In view of the alarming messages from Paris, on 5th December Napoleon decided to leave his soldiers and go back to France. His marshals were ordered to continue delaying actions which were designed to spare time for the emperor to arrive in the Grand Duchy of Warsaw with the fresh forces. A special role in those actions was given to Major-General Count Jean Reynier, the commander of the 7th Saxon corps. In view of the betrayal by the Prussian and Austrian contingents assisting the Grand Army, the Saxon corps were the last unit that could provide support for the 5th Polish corps of Prince Poniatowski organised near Piotrków. For this reason, it was especially important for Reynier's soldiers to maintain their position near Kalisz, where the two corps were supposed to combine in the middle of February 1813. Moreover, keeping Kalisz in the Napoleonic hands closed the tsarist soldiers a way back to Prussian Silesia. This had an additional value, if one takes into account the indecisive attitude of Frederick Wilhelm III. The attack on Kalisz was supposed to be carried out by the Russian corps of avant-garde commanded by General-Lieutenant Baron Ferdinand von Wintzingerode. Despite the fact that Wintzingerode outnumbered the Grand Army a little (ca. 14.000 Russians to ca. 12.000 soldiers of the Grand Army), the tsarist army managed to defeat its enemy twice in Turek and Stawiszyn (12th February), and then unexpectedly appear near Kalisz on 13th February in the morning. The Saxcon troops located northwards from the town were completely taken aback and surrounded by the numerous Russian cavalry. The brigade commanded by General von Nostitz was defeated in the battles of Kokanin and Borków, and Pawłówek and Skarszew were attacked, with the brigades of General von Steindel and Colonel Maura. These units managed to escape, unlike the defenders of Borków, but were forced to leave their positions and retreat to the other bank of the Prosna. The decisive battle took place in late afternoon in the Kalisz suburbs, near the village Tyniec. Despite the ever recurring attack of the Russian troops commanded by Prince Wirtemberski, General Jarry's French brigade, supported by the Polish 2nd regiment of troops and the Saxon brigade under General von Sahr, managed to keep their position and defend the bridge on the Prosna. The general balance of battles, however, was adverse for the 7th corps. They lost ca. 1.500 soldiers (in comparison to 600 Russians). In the night of 13/14 February the Napoleonic armies retreated from Kalisz. Thereby the main Russian goals had been accomplished – the 7th corps were considerably weakened, the route to Silesia was opened, whereas Prince Poniatowski's Poles were cut from the remaining units of the Grand Army.

Opis:
Engravers of the post-Tridentine period recorded the most important events of their time in their etching graphics. They created these works with a view to memorialise the events, but also in order to inform the public opinion about them and to influence their thinking. Hagiographic iconography was among the most frequent graphic themes of the time, which was owing to the atmosphere of the Tridentine reforms. The Council of Trent rediscovered art as a medium for communicating the religious message. The 16th and the 18th century witnessed an excessive confrontation between the European denominations, brutal religious wars and the Turkish invasion into Christian countries. Artistic accounts of the era display a lot of martial motifs, with noticeable emphasis on the endangered status of Christianity. Catholic Church directed human thinking towards God as an Almighty Power holding the world in His hands. The etching graphics that have survived until today testify to the prevalence of this message. The role of the Divine Providence was repeatedly highlighted, as was the mediation of the Mother of God and the Saints: they implored God to spare Christianity from the religious and military turmoil. The paper draws upon a vast selection of European etching graphics to present the power of the iconographic propaganda, with a special focus on the protective and supportive role of the Patron Saints.

Opis:
The dictionary of Józef Krasny and Polish living Russian language in the interwar period (several remarks about the competition published in „Trybuna Radziecka” in 1930)In 1930 the editor-in-chief of the Russian-Polish Dictionary, Józef Krasny, asked the readers of the newspaper “Trybuna Radziecka”, published in Moscow in 1927–1938, to send to the newspaper “Trybuna Radziecka” the best Polish equivalents of presented words. The list of the Rusicisms and the Sovietisms was published in “Trybuna Radziecka” and contained about 90 lexems. In Józef Krasny’s opinion these words had not very good translation in the Soviet Polish language. He described the process of creation of this dictionary in “Trybuna Radziecka”. The editor of Russian-Polish dictionary made effort to reflect as closely as possible the language of proletarian revolution, the new realities of life in the Soviet Union. The Russian-Polish Dictionary was criticized by contemporaries. Among them was Bruno Jasieński. The article presents a lexical material excerpted from the “Trybuna Radziecka”. The author tries to show that many of lexems presented in “Trybuna Radziecka” in list of Józef Krasny were in common use in the Soviet variant of Polish language in the years preceding World War II. The author incorporated only these Rusicisms and Sovietisms extracted from the “Trybuna Radziecka” which were presented in newspaper by Józef Krasny and were discussed in the newspaper ”Kultura Mas” by Bruno Jasieński. The paper contains 12 pairs of lexems, like czystka – przesiew, gbur – kułak, gosprad – kołchoz, łazik – progulszczyk. The aim of the article is show that the “Trybuna Radziecka” reflects living Polish language in the post-revolution Soviet Russia.

In addition, the authoress made an analysis of the archaic institution of fideicomissum. While depicting the background of legislative efforts of the time, the authoress recalled the developments that took place prior to the discussed changes in the ownership relationships. Therefore she discussed also the 19th century reforms that abolished serfdom and serf labour, introduced the land and mortgage register etc.

Opis:
At the dawn of the XXth century the Balkan countries were intent on waging war against Turkey. In the preparation period, however, they had severely exceeded their economic and demographic capabilities. The arms production consumed vast amounts of money, leading to an extraordinary debt of the Balkan states. The 1912-1913 wars have proved to be a veritable ordeal for the economies of the involved countries as well as their social endurance. This great sacrifice was supposed to further the national goal of defeating Turkey and finally establishing the inter-state borders, even in the face of an impending economic collapse. The Balkan conflicts turned into a war of attrition, a harbinger of what was to come during the World War I. The pre-war efforts and the cost of the actual warfare brought Bulgaria, Greece,Serbia, Montenegro as well as Turkey to the brink of economical breakdown and major social turbulence. The calling of 1.3 million men to arms resulted in halting the industrial production and an agricultural crisis in the countries of the Balkan Alliance. The civilian transport sector was non-existent (since all the means and assets had been requisitioned by the military) which proved fatal to the commerce. This in turn greatly diminished the states’ tax income, further worsening the financial repercussions of the war. The number of soldiers fallen, wounded or killed by cholera were reaching hundreds of thousands. Due to the harsh war conditions and the lack of suitable attention many of the wounded have become disabled, which banned them from the work market and doomed them to social benefits. Amongst the consequences of the war were also migrations of the civilians, forced by the war itself and the following border changes. The Christian refugees alone numbered hundreds of thousands, while any real means of administering to the basic needs of the displaced masses were actually non-existent. On the Muslim side the losses amounted to 620,000 Turkish soldiers and civilians. A further 440,000 have been displaced and moved to Anatolia. Moreover the pillage, the atrocity, as well as the destruction of private property have engraved the feelings of mutual hatred and longing for a vendetta in the minds of the Balkan people.

Although the commander-in-chief of the Serbian army during both Balkan wars was the chief of staff, general Radomir Putnik, it was his subordinate, a mere 24 years-old Prince Aleksander. The battle of Kumanovo (23rd–24th October 1912), considered as one of the most important battles of the First Balkan War, brought him a great prestige. It seems, that Aleksander tried to strengthen his image as an honest and honorable soldier fighting in defense of his homeland and for the liberation of all South Slavs. It was an effective way of obtaining sympathy subjects, the way, which began to be used on a larger scale after taking the throne by Aleksander Karadjordjević (16th August 1921). The largest and most popular newspaper in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (since 1929 Yugoslavia), the daily “Politika” supported the official political line of the king. A very interesting aspect of this activity is its way of presenting events associated with the commemoration of the battle of Kumanovo. The cultivation of the so-called “myth of Kumanovo” was important aspect of king’s Aleksander policy, who in the face of ongoing problems and disputes in the internal policy of the country, wanted to be seen as “unifier”, soldier and hero, who was not interested in political games. Much of his subjects perceived him exactly in that way.

In the article we shall study the position of the second largest community in the city of Salonica – the Muslim community – during the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), using British and Austrian documents. We can conclude that the Balkan Wars satisfied the ambitions of the Balkan states’ nationalist circles which, of course, had the politics of the Great Powers behind them. That such of the case was obvious at both conferences that took place in London at the same time – the Conference of the Ambassadors of the Great Powers and the Peace Conference of the Balkan states engaged in war. 80 years after these wars, a new war threatened the Balkans and was led, with all its attributes of cruelty, on the territory of former Yugoslavia. Reflecting on this phenomenon from today’s perspective, we can come to the conclusion that the historical lesson taught by the Balkan Wars (1912/13) had not been learnt.

In the essay the author enquires into the references to popular song in the lyric poetry of the first decades of 20th century, treating the birth of the popular music as the beginning of perceiving a hit single as the integral piece meant to be shown to the public. The re-searcher asks about acceptability and, eventually, the consequences of the artistic flirt of highbrow literature with egalitarian word-music tradition. Moreover, the author shows various scenario of treating hit song impulses, beginning with total ignorance shown by Young Poland artists (Jan Kasprowicz, Bolesław Leśmian, Leopold Staff), through the separation of serious creativity from stage gainful employment, as in the case of Skamander members fearing being given the label of cabaret entertainers (Julian Tuwim, Antoni Słonimski or Marian Hemar), until the liquidation of barriers between serious and jocular muse domains, as in Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński’s lyric poetry. In this article, there are dozens of allusion, quotations, paraphrases, all invoking not only the most popular hit singles of the Interbellum, but also songs which were less known and therefore nowadays seem to be more difficult to identify. The list of the poets is extended by such personages as Bruno Jasieński, Maria Pawlikowska, and finally Czesław Miłosz.

This paper addresses the sense of national identity of the Macedonians in the period of the Balkan wars and their aftermath. The first source material were used journalistic texts and calls in the journal „Makedonskij Golos” published by Macedonian expatriates gathered around Dimitrija Čupovski in St. Petersburg in the years 1913-1914. Second was diary Dnevnik) written by Krste Petkov Misirkov in 1913. Expression of these two major characters in the Macedonian history reflect geopolitical policies conducted in the Slavic population in the Balkans. It is an important source material documenting the national consciousness of intelligence derived from the Macedonian lands. This indicates that the main topics which were then undertaken focused on the defense of the whole Macedonian territory, aspirations to create their own state and diversified approach to the idea of the Slavic community.
