    The text presents the figure of Walery Goetel, who in the first half of the twentieth century and at the beginning of the second half of this century worked hard to protect the geological and natural values of the Tatra Mountains. Through his research activities, the scientist fostered Polish-Czechoslovak cooperation, an easy task particularly in the interwar period. Notwithstanding a difficult geopolitical situation, together with researchers from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Walery Goetel attempted to establish a national park for the whole Tatras. It was intended that researchers would carry out their studies within the park, and its natural assets would be enjoyed by both Polish and Czechoslovak tourists. Even after the annexation of Zaolzie by Poland in 1938, Walery Goetel looked for every opportunity to work with Czechoslovak scholars, criticising the policy of his own government towards the southern neighbour. The Polish geologist’s commitment resulted in the establishment of landscape parks at the Polish-Czechoslovakian borderline after the Second World War.

    The article presents a brief history of the Sozological Section of the Polish Geological Society and its genesis in the context of the environmental protection movement and the idea of sustainable development, as well as political changes in Poland. The section adopted and popularized the name sozology for the emerging interdisciplinary science of rational and economical use of environmental resources, named by this creator, outstanding geologist and organizer of science, Walery Goetel. In the years 1963-1972, he chaired the pioneering Seminar on the Conservation of Nature Resources and Securing the Durability of Use of Raw Materials, which made the realities of resource and land-use management in the People's Republic of Poland aware. At the same time, he popularized good practices of resource conservation and reclamation. Goetel's initiatives preceded high-profile reports by the United Nations and the WECD: U Thant's (1969) “Problems of the Human Environment”, and Brundtland's (1987)“Our common future”. The Sozological Section of the PGS operated briefly but dynamically in the years 1992-2005. Its activity has been focused on the organization of scientific conferences, demonstration of environmental problems and practical solutions in the field and popularization. The branches of PGS in Kraków, Poznań and Kielce were most involved in the organization of the conferences, along with local leaders A. Paulo, J. Skoczylas and Z. Rubinowski. The subject of the conferences evolved towards the management of industrial degraded areas and for some time their organization benefited from the support of the mineral industries. The final part of the article presents the current state of sozology in Poland and the diagnosis of future needs.

    The article presents the principles of sozology formulated by Walery Goetel and examples of their development in the scientific and research works as well as implementation and teaching work performed at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Resource Management at AGH University of Science and Technology. These works are aimed at the rational management of mineral deposits and its extraction, as well as at the creation of utility values of the post-mining areas. It has also been shown that the work carried out at the faculty has gone far beyond mining activities using the experience gained from them. This has included, for example, the preservation and accessibility of the subsoil of medieval towns and the revitalization of towns with a predominantly industrial character. Work has also been conducted to rehabilitate sites and facilities for additional public use. The most important directions of solutions in the field of the reclamation and revitalization of post-mining areas developed with the participation of the faculty staff as well as in cooperation with national and international researchers are in this article. The continuous development of the Faculty is also reflected in its name changes: from the Faculty of Mining, through the Faculty of Mining and Geoengineering, to the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Resource Management. The current name reflects the actual scope of the subject matter undertaken in research and teaching, specifically the management of natural mineral deposits and also of secondary resources that should be reused in a closed cycle.
    W artykule przedstawiono zasady sozologii sformułowane przez Walerego Goetla oraz przykłady ich rozwijania w pracach naukowo-badawczych i wdrożeniowych oraz dydaktycznych realizowanych na Wydziale Inżynierii Lądowej i Gospodarki Zasobami na Akademii Górniczo-Hutniczej im. St. Staszica w Krakowie. Prace te ukierunkowane są na racjonalną gospodarkę złożem i jego eksploatację oraz nadawanie walorów użytkowych terenom poeksploatacyjnym. Pokazano także, że realizowane na wydziale prace wychodzą znacznie poza działalność górniczą wykorzystując doświadczenia z niej płynące. Dotyczyły między innymi zabezpieczania i udostępniania podziemi średniowiecznych miast czy rewitalizacji miast głównie o przemysłowej konotacji. Rozwijano także prace w zakresie zagospodarowania terenów i obiektów dla uzyskania dodatkowych wartości użytkowych niezbędnych społeczeństwu. W artykule dokonano przeglądu najważniejszych kierunków rozwiązań w rekultywacji i rewitalizacji terenów pogórniczych wykonanych z udziałem pracowników wydziału, a także we współpracy z naukowcami z kraju i zagranicy. Ciągły rozwój wydziału znajduje odzwierciedlenie także w zmianach nazwy: od Wydziału Górniczego, poprzez Wydział Górnictwa i Geoinżynierii, aż do Wydziału Inżynierii Lądowej i Gospodarki Zasobami. Obecna nazwa oddaje faktyczny zakres tematyki podejmowanej w badaniach i dydaktyce, czyli gospodarkę naturalnymi złożami kopalin, ale także zasobami wtórnymi, które powinny być zawracane do użytku w obiegu zamkniętym.
