Opis:
In this paper we propose new simple integer linear programs (ILPs) formulations for minimizing capacity (in wavelength link) utilization in survivable WDM network. The study examines the performance of shared based protection schemes, such as path protection scheme and link protection scheme under single fiber failure. The numerical results obtained show a reduction in capacity utilization using random traffic compared to the reported ILP formulation. We also present the results using Poisson's traffic to identify the frequently used links for the widely used NSF network. The proposed work not only reduces the wavelength consumption in different traffic scenarios but also efficient in terms of simulation time.

Opis:
A wavelength conversion scheme is presented experimentally using a wavelength tunable erbium-doped fiber laser as a probe light source and an electroabsorption modulator with a DC bias only. For the input wavelength of 1557nm with a 10-Gb/s non-return to zero signal, the Q value is 10.6and the power penalty is less than 1.5dB at a bit error rate of 10–9 at the probe wavelength of1560nm. Given a fixed Q value of 6, probe wavelengths cover a range of 25nm. Furthermore, the relationship between the range of probe wavelength and the amount of power penalty is alsoinvestigated.

Opis:
Simultaneous providing services of ultra-wideband and wired signal over single wavelength can greatly decrease the complexity and reduce the costs of a wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network. However, ultra-wideband signal occupies the spectrum range from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz, and a narrow idle frequency band (from 0 to 3.1 GHz) could be employed to transport wired signal with a limited rate. In this paper, we proposed a scheme to simultaneously provide ultra-wideband and wired services, in which the information rate of the wired signal is enhanced by employing a multi-level amplitude switch keying signal in the idle frequency band formed by ultra-wideband signal. In comparison with other advanced modulation formats used for wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical networks such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, multi-level amplitude switch keying signal can be easily received by using intensity modulation direct detection, which will greatly reduce the cost of end-users. Especially, if a multi-band ultra-wideband signal is substituted for the direct-sequence ultra-wideband signal, the available spectrum range to transport wired signal will be easily extended to 5 GHz as multi-band ultra-wideband signal has a narrower spectrum width and flexible center frequency, so 4-amplitude switch keying signal with a rate of 5 Gbaud will achieve an information rate of 10 Gbit/s.

Opis:
Today's long haul and metro high-speed networks are mainly based on synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) or its American equivalent synchronous optical network (SONET) and wavelength division multiplex (WDM). On the other hand, the large amount of traffic growth during the last years has been caused mainly by Internet protocol (IP) traffic. Traditionally, the IP-router based networks and the cross-connect based synchronous networks are often planned and operated separately. However, in line with new developments such as generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS), network providers begin to realize that the convergence of these two worlds promises significant benefits. A set of software tools to support the network designer has been developed and used on various kinds of real world network planning problems arising in the SDH/WDM context. This includes, among others, 1+1 protection planning, static restoration and dual homing issues. These tools are extended with additional features to handle aspects of the IP/SDH interplay in a GMPLS environment. The two main components are an AMPL based integer model (solved via CPLEX) and a heuristic implemented in C++.

Opis:
With the ever-rising data volume that is demanded by the market, network planning in order to minimize the necessary investment while meeting the demands is constantly an important task for the network providers. Synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) and wavelength division multiplex (WDM) form the core of many current backbone networks. In order to solve the provisioning and routing problem in such WDM networks, we develop a variable neighborhood search (VNS) metaheuristic. VNS is a metaheuristic that combines series of random and improving local searches based on systematically changed neighborhoods. An integer flow formulation is modeled in AMPL and solved by CPLEX in order to obtain optimal solutions as a reference for the heuristic.
