Opis:
The article focuses on W.B. Yeats’s early critical and theoretical writings with a view to demonstrating the poet’s idea of poetical culture as a means towards moulding the identity of Ireland outside the polarity of English colonial discourse and Irish extreme nationalist agenda. It is argued that Yeats envisages the poetical culture as built around two ideals. On the one hand, he recommends the return to oral poetry as a source of symbolic continuity of Irish identity; on the other he infuses his belief in symbolic truth with an ironic doubt as to the possibility of ever unveiling that truth. Yeats’s idea is then set against Edward Said’s and Homi Bhabha’s theories of postcoloniality.

Opis:
The article analyses the motifs of faith, sacrifice and transcendence as well as a variety of methods in which they are represented in the dramatic works of W.B. Yeats. The article also tackles the difficult theme of creating national myths through dramatic and political activity that Yeats was so keen to engage with. Additionally, Wąchocka discusses the mythological imagination in Yeats’s drama in the context of the Celtic mythological tradition, pointing to how certain motifs and subjects (especially lives of gods and heroes) find their way into his plays. Wąchocka pays particular attention to the irrational, subconscious elements in Yeats’s work, identifying a variety of traditions he was drawing his inspiration from. The article also discusses the topic of reincarnation, and the theme of return to life of Yeats’s heroes, and interprets images and symbols used to represent them.

Opis:
Much as the book has been in evidence among numerous critics, the present essay focuses exclusively on Yeats’s famous Per Amica Silentia Lunae (1918), seeking to investigate the impulses of faith and irony that underpin its construction. The book is discussed on four levels: as a prose poem, a treatise on poetry, an account of Yeats’s infatuation with Iseult Gonne and finally, as an elaboration of the theory of culture that Yeats pondered in his earlier critical and theoretical work. The readings overlap, as Yeats is shown to conceive of the life of the poet as a constant quest for self-reinvention that never gives up on the hope of its completion, at the same time remaining powerfully sceptical of the means to achieve that completion.

Opis:
Michel Foucault is certainly one of the greatest minds of the 20th century whose ever-growing influence may be traced in nearly every field of humanities such as economy, history, and of course, literary theory and criticism. The concept of heterotopia is arguably among the most intriguing concepts developed through the works of Foucault. Simply stated, a heterotopia is a space whose function is to disturb the established order of an existing space, and, as a result, lead to the production of knowledge. However, heterotopias found in Foucault’s own works are usually functioning in linguistic, or textual, terms rather than referring to a real, physical space. The purpose of the present essay is to provide its readers with the analyses of some of the poems of the Noble-winning Irish poet, dramatist, and prose writer W. B. Yeats in terms of their heterotopic qualities, and to show that physical heterotopias can also lead to the production of knowledge
