Today Moldova is not on the top of international political agenda, but it is important both for the West and Russia in the context of their geopolitical competition. At the same time it is a competition of two integrative projects, which propose two different models of development – the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union. For a long time it seemed that parliamentary “Alliance for European Integration” will be able to make Moldova a successful example of Europeanization, but finally it discredited European idea and Moldovan people after massive social protests elected pro-Russian Igor Dodon president of the country. Now it seems that he will eventually integrate Moldova to the Eurasian Economic Union, but to do this he has to solve the problem of parliament, which is controlled by his political opponents. Referendum is supposed to become a solution. Finally, potential additional advantage of I. Dodon is that the challenge of Transnistria can also be overcome in connection to the Eurasian integration of Moldova, because Chisinau with the help of Kremlin will get unified state and Tiraspol – formal affiliation with Russia it dreams of. The story is not over yet, but Vladimir Putin’s chances to win are good as never

Pale Fire may be read as an elaborate parody of literary criticism, or even Nabokov’s selfparody. This paper reconsiders the puzzle of identities in the novel in this context, with the trio of the author, the critic/annotator and the mysterious third man tracking the progress of both with clearly insidious intent. This analysis aims to uncover the suppressed trauma of Kinbote’s past, hiding behind Kinbote’s narrative. A memory of traumatic past forces Kinbote into ecstatic fiction-making. He constructs the marvellous Semberland (the land of resemblers) as a bridge between his lonely life in the foreign culture and his obscure past in the culture that no longer exists. This mythologization also mirrors a much grander theme: the theme of death and – always mysterious, never graspable – afterlife, and an attempt to bridge the gap between the quotidian realm of one’s existence and the glorious and unexplainable potustoronnost’, the other side of the mirror, the other side of consciousness.

The article deals with the problem of the text cognitive space interpretation. In the centre of attention is the concept SOUL realized in V. Nabokov’s novel Invitation to an Execution. The role of the concept’s value component is defined. The notion “person” has been of great importance in European civilization for several centuries. The formation of its content range was conditioned by the philosophical, theological, and cultural influences of Europe’s two major civilization centres, namely the Byzantine Empire and the Roman Empire. The important question therefore becomes: What are the differences in the understanding of the concept of “person” between the world of the Christian East and the world of the Christian West. In search of an answer to this question, the article is a reflection on the views of an outstanding Orthodox theologian—Vladimir Lossky. For decades, his theological heritage has been inspiring both Orthodox and Catholic theologians, constituting an important point of reference in the interpretation of the Church Fathers.

The article addresses the problem of people who were first executioners and later victims in Vladimir Zazubrin’s micro-novel Sliver. Although it was written in 1923, it wasn’t published until 1989, 52 years after the author’s death. He was arrested and then shot in 1937 in the time of terror. In Sliver, we can see the work of a checklist executioners, who mercilessly murders thousands of people, the victims of a totalitarian state. The article presents an attempt at an interpretation and analysis of Sliver, using the comparison of executioner’s and victim’s attitudes. The main character, Andrei Srubov, does his brutal work very thoroughly. However, everyday contact with his victim’s suffering and blood and the fear that arouses in him cause his madness. The executioner who has been killing class enemies of the Russian revolution becomes in the end its victim.

Niniejszy artykuł jest poświęcony rosyjskojęzycznemu przekładowi Alicji w Krainie Czarów Lewisa Carrolla wykonanemu przez Vladimira Nabokova w 1923 roku (Аня в Странe Чудес). Istotnym elementem jego genezy jest fakt, iż tekst sekundarny powstawał w czasie, gdy pisarz, podobnie zresztą jak inni członkowie rosyjskiej inteligencji, przebywał na emigracji. Punktem wyjścia dla rozważań jest potraktowanie Nabokovowskiej wersji jako adaptacji, celem – wskazanie w jaki sposób adaptacyjne zabiegi zniekształciły oryginał, na jakie zyski i straty go naraziły. Autor skupia się na dwóch elementach tytułowej Krainy Czarów: nazwach bohaterów oraz literackich aluzjach przepuszczonych przez tłumacza przez filtr rosyjskiej kultury. Ich zestawienie z oryginałem ujawniło zmiany w warstwie semantycznej antroponimów i układzie formalnym parodiowanych tekstów. Niemniej jednak, udomowienie przyniosło również zyski w postaci wzbogacenia tekstu o funkcję terapeutyczną pozwalającą rosyjskim ekspatriantom przetrwać trudy wygnania i zachować pamięć o utworach należących do rosyjskiego kanonu literackiego.
This paper explores a Russian translation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland made by Vladimir Nabokov in 1923. A significant aspect of its emergence relates to the fact that the target text was created when the writer and many other representatives of the Russian intelligentsia were living in exile. The starting point for the article is the hypothesis that Nabokov’s version is an adaptation. The aim of the paper is to show how adaptive procedures influence the original and what profits and losses they produce. The author focuses on two elements of the book: the names of the characters and literary allusions both filtered through the Russian culture by the translator. Their juxtaposition with the original reveals changes in the semantic layer of proper names and in the formal structure of parodied texts. Nevertheless, this “domestication” also brings a new value. It enriches the target text with an additional therapeutic function which allowed Russian expatriates and their children to deal with hardships of exile and to keep Russian canonical literary works in their minds.

The aim of this paper is to prove that the narrative of the game The Path reverses the main properties of the fairy tale distinguished by the Russian structuralist Vladimir Propp. This results in the transformation of the game story’s genre from the fairy tale into that of the psychological thriller. The Russian scholar’s theory emphasises the role of characters of the narrative and their actions, which are significant components of the literary story, as well as the one that is told in the computer game. The study proves that the reversal of the functions and roles of dramatis personae in the game’s narrative results in the development of the elements characteristic for the psychological thriller in the game. The fact that this shift is fluent is an evidence that those two genres, although dissonant, have many common elements. The fairy tale and thriller are complementary – the latter reveals the hidden and suppressed aspects of the former.
Celem artykułu jest próba analizy procesu transformacji baśni w thriller psychologiczny w grze komputerowej The Path. Punkt wyjścia do rozważań stanowi teoria strukturalna Vladimira Proppa, który poddał badaniom tradycyjne baśni, wyodrębniając ich elementy wspólne, takie jak funkcje i role postaci. Rosyjski strukturalista w swojej teorii jako kluczowe elementy opowieści uwypukla bohaterów i ich działania, istotne nie tylko z punktu widzenia teoretyków literatury, ale również badaczy podejmujących refleksję nad grami komputerowymi. Studium wykazuje, że funkcje i role bohaterów tradycyjnych baśni wyróżnione przez Proppa zostają w The Path zdeformowane: gra „schodzi” z wyznaczonej przez strukturę baśni ścieżki, tworząc lukę w gatunkowej przestrzeni, która zostaje wypełniona elementami właściwymi dla thrillera psychologicznego. Odwrócenie i deformacja funkcji oraz roli postaci baśniowych skutkuje przeobrażeniem opowiedzianej w grze historii w thriller. Owo przeobrażenie wydaje się niezwykle płynne dlatego, że baśń i thriller psychologiczny nie są całkowicie odmiennymi, wykluczającymi się gatunkami; przeciwnie – uzupełniają się wzajemnie. Drugi pokazuje i dopowiada to, co pierwszy przemilcza lub zataja.
