Opis:
Metal pollution attracts growing interest mainly due to their toxic effects on the entire natural environment. It is therefore necessary to monitor, not to exceed acceptable standards of elements in ecosystems. Heavy metals in soils are derived from natural and anthropogenic sources. The purpose of this article is to present the contents of copper and nickel in agricultural soils within the Vistula river catchment based on research carried out by the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in the period since 1995 to 2010. The assessment of a degree of soil contamination by these elements according to standards has been also performed. It has been proven that about 91% of agricultural soils in Vistula river catchment shows natural (0°), while approximately 9% higher (Io) copper concentrations. It was found that in the total agricultural area of the Vistula river catchment, soils not contaminated with nickel (0°), with elevated (Io), and weakly contaminated soils (IIo) are respectively 85%, 11%, 4% of the analyzed soils area. There was a significant relationship between the content of copper and nickel in soils and such features as organic matter and pH. Analysis of results confirmed that the highly developed industrial activity affects the increased amount of pollutants in soils; the greatest accumulation occurred in soils of the upper Vistula river catchment, which is caused primarily by interaction of the Upper Silesian Industrial District.

Opis:
Seasonal and multi-annual variability of river water temperature has been analysed based on data from 24 gauge stations of the IMGW network. It has been characterised by means of several values of the thermal regime parameters: mean annual, semi-annual (November-April, May-October) and amplitude. The variability of water temperature in the catchment and in the stream network has been estimated. Measurement data included seven stations at the Vistula river. On the background of natural variability, rivers or their segments have been distinguished where water temperature is impacted by anthropopressure.

Opis:
Studies on the segetal flora of the Middle Vistula River Valley mesoregion were carried out between 2003 and 2006 in cereal and potato crops and in stubble fields (117 localities). A total of 184 medicinal vascular plant species were noted in the studied agrocenoses. Native plants (68%) dominated over species brought to Poland (32%). Hemicryptophytes (83 spp.), therophytes (74 spp.) and geophytes (26 spp.) were the most numerous groups of life forms. Perennials (55%) prevailed over short-lived plants (45%). Very rare and rare species (61%) built up the most numerous group of species. Their populations usually consisted of single specimens. Only a_few of the medicinal plant species occured as larger populations. They were Aphanes arvensis, Stellaria media and Galium aparine in cereals, Equisetum arvense, Stellaria media, Chenopodium album, Elymus repens, Plantago major, Polygonum amphibium, Mentha arvensis, Plantago intermedia, Polygonum hydropiper and Gypsophila muralis in stubble fields, as well as Stellaria media in potato cultivations...

Opis:
This paper presents past and recent water management in the area called the Vistula Delta Fens (Żuławy Fens). This area (56 x 56 km) is located at the outlet of the Vistula River to the Baltic Sea, at the shore of the Gulf of Gdańsk. A large part of the area (30%) is located below sea level as potentially submerged depressions. A multitude of rivers, channels, ditches and pumping stations have been constructed here over several centuries. The area is characterized by highly productive alluvial soils, surface water with a high potential for fish-farming and fishery, and attractive tourist areas at the banks of the rivers and channels. Historically, floods have occurred repeatedly as a result of: (i) – breaks in the dams along big rivers, e.g. after heavy rains and high water levels (in summer); (ii) – dam breaks caused by accumulation of ice-cakes in winter or during spring times; (iii) – dam breaks after storms on the sea with increasing sea water levels at the river outlets (mainly in winter); (iv) – overflow of water into flat land after heavy rains followed by slow drainage of water from the fields, ditches, channels and pumping stations (in summer); (v) – overflow of water into depressions and swamps below sea level after interruptions of, or decreases in, the pump operations at the pumping stations. The EU directive on flood control advises that the member countries should: (i) – produce maps of the areas vulnerable to floods to facilitate communication and planning; (ii) – develop management plans for flooding events; (iii) – exchange experience and codes of good practice during flood; (iv) – facilitate a close cooperation between the scientific community and politicians in the field of flood protection; (v) – raise the level of knowledge, communication and awareness among local societies living in areas prone to flooding.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to identify and assess the lithological features typical for alluvial sediments of Vistula River from the natural part of its course on 603 km of the river course. For this purpose, the micromorphological analysis was carried out for a sample taken from the surface of a tree covered island. The analysis is laborious, but its great advantage is that it allows to determine the detailed characteristics of undisturbed sediments, supplying other lithological studies. Examined thin section showed fractionation lamination within medium and fine sands, interbedded with coarser grains with some organic admixtures. Detailed analysis allows to detect gradual and sudden changes of discharge energy.

Opis:
The presence of a river in the city centre undoubtedly enhances the attractiveness of the landscape. The number of natural points, viewing vistas and exposed places increases, which is also influenced by topography. That is the case in Cracow, where the Vistula river cuts through the city. Over the centuries the river has been changing its corridor, the most memorable in the city's landscape being the one with the Vistula taking a sharp turn round Wawel Hill, and dividing near Kazimierz into the Old and New Vistula. In the 19th century the modern landscape of the Vistula Valley started to take shape, especially with its strong focus on bridges. However, only the last quarter of that century brought the first attempts of complex flood prevention initiatives. From the very beginning, the issue of regulating the river and developing its near surrounds raised heated arguments, with aesthetic values at the heart of the matter. The issue of developing riverside areas, particularly in the 20th and at the start of the 21st century caused similar debates, was widely discussed and sometimes became the object of contests. A number of studies and landscape analyses were carried out. Among the numerous proposals and realizations are: the amphitheatre in the Vistula bend, hotels, Museum of Japanese Art and Technology "Manggha", Kotlarski bridge, Kazimierz Gallery, Tadeusz Kantor Museum as well as many pedestrian overpasses and promenades.

Opis:
The buried and present-day Vistula valleys has developed along tectonic linear structures of NW-SE trend. The Vistula river valley and its tributaries essentialy maintained their courses during the Małopolanian, Ferdynandovian, Mazovian and Eemian interglacials. During the Małopolanian, Mazovian, Ferdynandovian interglacials the gradient of the buried Vistula valley was 0.57?, while during the Eemian Interglacial and during deposition of Vistulian terraces and Holocene flood plain deposits it was about 0.34?, due to from tectonic movements. The width of the buried Vistula valley was the greatest during the Eemian Interglacial (15 km) and during the Vistulian (17 km) when strong lateral erosion occurred. The stratigraphy of the Quaternary deposits is based on palynologically documented sites of the Ferdynandovian, Mazovian and Eemian interglacials. This region was covered by ice sheets of the Nidanian, Sanian, Wilgian, Liviecian, Odranian and Wartanian glaciations during eight advances. Liviecian and Wartanian Glaciation maximum limits were determined in the study area. Interstadial fluvial deposits, between the premaximum and maximum stadials of the Odranian Glaciation, were recognised and termed sediments of the Gniewosznian Interstadial. The deposits of the Wartanian Glaciation have been TL dated at 146-203 ka BP and the Odranian at 212-280 ka BP.
