Opis:
Four bryozoan species are described from the upper member (Shishtu II) (Visean, Early Carboniferous=Mississippian) of the Shishtu Formation of central Iran: Nikiforovella ulbensis Nekhoroshev, 1956, Nicklesopora elegantulaformis (Nekhoroshev, 1956), Primorella cf. iranica Gorjunova, 2006, and Nikiforopora intermedia (Nikiforova, 1950). This Visean assemblage shows close palaeogeographical affinities of Iran with Kazakhstan and Russia (eastern Transbaikalia, Kurgan region).

Miospore assemblages from the Łobżonka Formation from three boreholes situated in the Laska–Czaplinek zone in Western Pomerania represent the lower part of the Lycospora pusilla (Pu) Biozone established for that area. An assemblage from one sample may represent this zone or the preceding Prolycospora claytonii (Cl) Biozone. This indicates that the sequences investigated may be attributed to the lower Viséan, and that the lower part of one of these may represent the uppermost Tournaisian. It is suggested that the part of the Łobżonka Formation studied is the lateral equivalent of the lower (but not the lowermost) part of the Drzewiany Formation of the Koszalin–Wierzchowo zone.

The trace fossil Zoophycos has been first time recognized in the Sudetes within the lower Carboniferous (upper Visean, crenistria Zone) of the Paprotnia Beds in the Bardo Unit. A distinct concentration of Zoophycos occurs in the lower part of the Paprotnia profile, in mudstones interbedded with bentonites, which were most likely deposited between storm wave base and fair weather wave base, in oxygenated water.

Opis:
In this paper the trace fossil associations and the taphocoenoses from the Upper Visean Paprotnia Beds (Bardo Unit) have been compared. Eleven ichnogenera have been recognized (Zoophycos, Chondrites, Protovirgularia, Lockeia, Palaeophycus, Nereites, Planolites, Altichnus, Paleobuprestis, cf. Thalassinoides and ?daedaloid form). A new ichnospecies Paleobuprestis sudeticus has been defined herein. It is the oldest wood-boring trace fossil observed in macroscale and the first wood-boring trace fossil preserved on the archaeocalamites stems. Based on ichnodiversity and relative abundance of trace fossils in the investigated strata three ichnoassociations have been distinguished: Zoophycos–Chondrites–Palaeophycus, Palaeophycus–Nereites and Paleobuprestis. Vertical succession of both the taphocoenoses and ichnoassociations reflects the different colonization stages of the substrate and is linked to bathymetric changes in the marine basin from offshore to nearshore conditions in warm climate at low latitude. The Paprotnia profile is a unique record of the Asbian–Brigantian transition.

Opis:
The siliciclastic rocks of the Paprotnia Beds from the Bardo Unit (Polish Sudetes) provide abundant and diverse palynological material. The miospore assemblages recovered allow distinction of two miospore biozones. The Tripartites vetustus–Rotaspora fracta (VF) Biozone was recognized in the lower and the middle parts of the section. In its upper part the Cingulizonates capistratus (Cc) Subbiozone, the lower part of the Cingulizonates capistratus–Bellispores nitidus (CN) Biozone was distinguished. These results indicate that the rocks of the Paprotnia section, considered earlier on the basis of biostratigraphic and radiometric data as upper Asbian, should be assigned to the upper Asbian and Brigantian. The location of the Asbian/Brigantian boundary and the possible occurrence of a gap in the Brigantian part of the section are discussed. Palynofacies observations of miospore preservation and frequency provided additional information, which confirm the gradual shallowing of the environment of deposition from offshore to onshore. Thermal maturity assessment of organic matter, based on miospore colour, indicates early mature and mature stages of organic matter thermal alteration.

Opis:
The relatively rich assemblages of shark teeth from pelagic limestone (Mississippian, late Viséan, late Asbian-middle Brigantian) of three northern European regions: the Rhenish Mountains (Westenfeld Quarry, Germany), the Holy Cross Mountains (Todowa Grząba at the edge of Ostrówka Quarry, Poland), and Derbyshire (Cawdor Quarry, Matlock, England, UK) display certain similarities, with the absolute predominance of the teeth of Falcatidae (small Symmoriiformes) and the constant presence of Thrinacodus spp. The largest and most diverse assemblage from Todowa Grząba contains at least three species of a falcatid Denaea, a xenacanthimorph Bransonella nebraskensis, a newly described phoebodontid Thrinacodus dziki sp. nov., a few ctenacanthiform and euselachian teeth, and two abraded euchondrocephalan dental elements. Anachronistidae, common in the most of late Viséan pelagic faunas, are absent from Todowa Grząba and Westenfeld. The material under study differs from the shallow-water chondrichthyan fauna, hitherto described from the Mississippian carbonate platform facies, by its taxonomic content (particularly almost total absence of Euchondro-cephali), generally lower diversity, and higher frequency of small teeth.

Opis:
The volcanic rocks, represented by clasts in the breccias occurring within the Viséan Culm sequence at Głuchówki, previously were considered to provide evidence of the earliest record of Variscan volcanism on the eastern margin of Moravo-Silesian Basin in the Kraków area. The breccias have been described as the deposits of submarine slides, accompanying the Viséan volcanic activity. This paper provides evidence of a different mode of origin. The present study, based on new field observations, combined with petrological and geochemical data, showed that volcanic rocks are major framework constituents of a breccia and are accompanied by clasts of spotty hornfels and Culm mudstone. Some clasts originated in erosion of the nearby Permian Zalas rhyodacite laccolith and the spotty hornfelses of the contact aureole, while other clasts came from the Culm mudstones. The breccia framework components are not rounded and poorly rounded, which reflects their short distance of transport. Therefore, an alternative scenario for the genesis of the breccia is proposed. The breccias represent material deposited in erosional pockets formed along the bedding of the Culm mudstones. The red iron oxide shells around clasts may indicate weathering in a warm continental climate, thus constraining the breccia formation to either the Permian or the Early or Late Triassic. Thus, the only well documented Viséan igneous rock in the study area remains the diabase, known from the Klucze borehole. Conversely, no volcanic rocks of this age have been documented in the area under consideration.

Opis:
Early late Viséan ammonoid assemblages in Morocco are composed of diverse and well-preserved specimens. The material was found in a plain in the Tafilalt (eastern Anti-Atlas). Here, we describe mass-occurrences of juvenile specimens, in which subadult and adult specimens occur in low numbers. The juveniles of some species display a conch morphology that differs fundamentally from the adult stages. Accordingly, we emend the species diagnoses of Goniatites lazarus as well as Calygirtyoceras darkaouaense, introduce the species Entogonites bucheri sp. nov., and discuss possible ecological implications of the morphologic changes throughout ontogeny. In particular, we compare the changes in conch morphology through ontogeny in the light of Pareto Optimiality according to which the morphology of organisms would fill a polygon or polyhedron in morphospace. Data points in one of the vorteces of the polyhedron indicate optimisation for the corresponding task. Although shape is not a proof of function, it appears plausible that juvenile conchs were selected rather for compactness while adult conchs were positively selected for conchs with improved hydrodynamic properties. This appears plausible because at small conch diameters, swimming movements will not suffice for effective translocation and a planktonic mode of life is likely.

Opis:
Detailed stratigraphy of the Tournaisian and Viséan in western Pomerania has been established on conodonts, miospores and ostracods recovered from 25 boreholes. Miospore associations from the Tournaisian and Viséan are assigned to nine biostratigraphic units (zones and subzones) erected earlier. Three successive benthic ostracod assemblages and two sub-assemblages are distinguished for the Tournaisian. The miospore zones/subzones and the ostracod assemblages/subassemblages are correlated with the Tournaisian sandbergi, Lower crenulata, isosticha-Upper crenulata, and typicus conodont zones. Stratigraphic gap has been demonstrated at the Devonian/Carboniferous boundary, using the results of both conodont and miospore studies. The Tournaisian/ Viséan boundary has been established approximately on the first appearance of the miospore species Lycospora pusilla Somers.
Przedstawiono szczegółową stratygrafię turneju i wizenu Pomorza Zachodniego w oparciu o konodonty, miospory i małżoraczki. Materiał do badań biostratygraficznych pochodził z 25 otworów wiertniczych. Zespoły miospor z badanych utworów zaliczono do dziewięciu wcześniej wyróżnionych jednostek biostratygraficznych (zon i podzon). Dla turneju wyróżniono trzy kolejne zespoły i dwa podzespoły małżoraczków bentonicznych. Zony/podzony miosporowe i zespoły/podzespoły małżoraczkowe skorelowano z turnejskimi zonami konodontowymi sandbergi, dolna crenulata, isosticha-górna crenulata i typicus.

A new species of micromorphic articulate brachiopod (Rhynchonellida) Lambdarina jugowiensis sp. nov., from the upper Viséan (Sokolec Beds) of central Sudetes, SW Poland, is described. The studied specimens are calcified, what makes them unique in respect of their state of preservation. The material is represented by a full range of growth stages; from brephic to gerontic. Based on its morphological features and the palaeogeographical distribution of all its known species, two main evolutionary lines are proposed for the genus; the Australian and the European ones. Lambdarina was widely distributed in the equatorial-tropical waters of marginal seas of the Palaeotethys Ocean, mostly during Mississippian time.
