Opis:
Vertisol plasticity is related to moisture content, and it requires an in-depth physicochemical characterization. This information allows us to use the land under the most adequate conditions and avoid soil physical degradation, especially its compaction. The objective of this study was to characterize the Vertisol in the Moroccan region of Doukkala-Abda and to predict soil plasticity based on the physicochemical parameters of soil, such as texture, electrical conductivity, Soil Organic Matter (SOM) and other chemical parameters for 120 samples. Determination of soil plasticity using Atterberg limits is a challenging and time-consuming method. Thus, this study aimed to develop a new model that can predict soil plasticity using the Random Forest algorithm. The soils presented homogeneity in the majority of physicochemical parameters, except a significant difference observed in the SOM and the electrical conductivity, which in turn influenced the soil plasticity state. The results showed significant and positive correlations between SOM, Soil Clay Content (SCC), Electrical Conductivity (EC), and plasticity in the Vertisol fields of the region. For the training phase, the model gave excellent results with a coefficient of determination of 0.995 and an RMSE of 0.164. Almost the same results were observed in the validation phase with a coefficient of determination of 0.974 and an RMSE of 0.361, which shows that the model succeeded in predicting plasticity in both phases. On the basis of these results, this model can be used for the plasticity prediction using other physicochemical parameters and the Random Forest Model. The prediction of soil plasticity is an important parameter to respect the timing of introducing machines/tools in the fields and avoid Vertisol degradation.

Opis:
The Upper Triassic succession in S Poland in which dinosaur bones have been found consists predominantly of siltstones and claystones. Three units are distinguished. The lower most and the upper most units reflect an alluvial environment, whereas the middle one represents lacustrine facies. The lower alluvial unit is interpreted as a record of ephemeral, sinuous, suspended-load channels with rapid vertical accretion. Channel barforms are lack ing. The environmentis interpreted as a low-en ergy anastomosing fluvial system. The clayey middle unit is interpreted as having formed in a wide long-lived lake. The top of the lacustrine deposits shows signs of vertisol-type pedogenesis, most probably under subtropical conditions, with seasonally-inuced wet and dry intervals. The upper unit reflects a low-energy meander ingriver system. Silty point bars were abundant and the channels migrated freely. The energy level of this fluvial system was slightly higher than that of the earlier one, which is interpreted as an effect of base-level lowering in combination with an increasingly humid climate. The al most exclusively silty/clayey alluvial deposits represent an exceptionally rare facies. The drainage basin must have been an extremely flat lowland. The presence of vertebrate bones within the anastomosing and meandering river deposits indicates that low-en - ergy alluvial plains were apparently favourable habitats for both reptiles and amphibians during the Late Triassic: under the subtropical, seasonally dry conditions, the animals must have preferred moist lowareas, i.e. the flood basins and abandoned channels on the flat valley floors.

Opis:
Sanidine 40Ar/ 39Ar ages of lapilli tuffs and the mammalian fauna of Pipestone Springs strata provide a high-resolution chronostratigraphy for upper Eocene (Priabonian) rock units in southwestern Montana. Two felsic lapilli tuffs with weighted-mean 40Ar/ 39Ar single crystal sanidine ages of 37.50±0.02 Ma and 36.00±0.20 Ma both fall within the Priabonian, late Eocene. These tuffs occur within the basal to upper part of the 55 m of exposed Pipestone Springs strata. The uppermost 15 m yield a diverse and abundant assemblage of mostly small-bodied middle Chadronian (Priabonian, late Eocene) mammals. The older lapilli tuff is an ashfall tuff, whereas the younger lapilli tuff exhibits minor aeolian reworking. The new 40Ar/ 39Ar age constraints significantly increase the age range of Pipestone Springs strata to include uppermost Duchesnean–lowermost Chadronian (Priabonian, upper Eocene) deposits in addition to its well-known mid- dle Chadronian vertebrate assemblage. These new 40 Ar/39Ar ages combined with its mammalian fauna further support Pipestone Springs strata as age-correlative to the Flagstaff Rim section in central Wyoming, and provide a basis for better determining late Eocene mammalian paleogeography and regional paleolandscapes in the United States Rocky Mountain to Great Plains areas. Loessites intercalated with paleosols dominate Pipestone Springs deposits. The recognition of loessites comprising these strata is a new depositional interpretation of Pipestone Springs strata, making these loessites some of the oldest known aeolian Eocene strata in the Great Plains–Rocky Mountains region. Pipestone Springs paleosols developed on lapilli tuffs are vertisols. Alfisols and inceptisols, developed from a parent material of volcanic glass mixed with non-volcanic grains, are the remaining paleosols within the loessite strata. Additionally, a new and important discovery in this project is the recognition that all paleosols are extensively bioturbated, containing trace fossils similar to Rebuffoichnus and newly identified trace fossils resembling Feoichnus, Eatonichnus, Fictovichnus, and Coprinisphaera.
