Opis:: The Church’s Mission in modern world is realized through the proclamation of the word of God, as a Good News. The source of the Church’s mission is a revealing God, who invites each person for trinitarian community of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Church called to existence by God’s Son, Word-Logos, proclaims Him as “Logos of Hope” through missio ad gentes and the new evangelization. In this task the testimony of Christian life plays an irreplaceable role. The Word of God, like the Christian faith itself, has a profoundly intercultural character; it is capable of encountering different cultures and in turn enabling them to encounter one another. Interreligious dialog, led by the Church, is a particular instrument of inculturation. It searches for the common points, together with other religious representatives and denominations on both theological and anthropological basis.

Opis:: Artykuł traktuje o zakorzenieniu konstytucji o Bożym Objawieniu Soboru Watykańskiego II we współczesnym naukowym i eklezjologicznym podejściu do Pisma Świętego. Biblia bowiem wyrasta z wiary Kościoła i tę wiarę, wraz z Tradycją, buduje. Całość opracowana jest w trzech punktach. Najpierw uwaga skupia się na Bogu, który objawia człowiekowi samego siebie i swą wolę zbawienia ludzkości. Następnie jest mowa o sposobach komunikowania się Boga z człowiekiem przy pomocy autorów ludzkich oraz długi proces tworzenia dzieł natchnionych kanonu ksiąg świętych. Jest wreszcie podkreślona konieczność odpowiedzi człowieka na Boże Słowo, dzięki czemu istota ludzka wchodzi w dialog zbawczy ze swoim Ojcem, przez Jego Syna w Duchu Świętym. Wspólnota wiary Kościoła stanowi naturalne środowisko badań, lektury i życia Słowem Bożym, do czego zachęca w swoim zakończeniu Konstytucja Dei Verbum (nr 25).
The article discusses the issue of how strongly contemporary ecclesiological and scholarly approach to the Sacred Scripture is rooted in the Second Vatican Council Constitution Dei Verbum. The Bible originates from the faith of the Church, and, together with Tradition, helps to build this faith. The text consists of three sections. The first one focuses on God, who reveals Himself and His plan of salvation to man. Then, the ways in which God communicates with man through human authors and the long process of writing the inspired sacred books are mentioned. The last part emphasises how important it is for man to respond to the Word of God, which will enable the salvific dialogue of man with his Father, through His Son in the Holy Spirit. The community of Church faith is a natural environment of research, devotional reading and encounters with the Word of God, which are the elements of Christian life that the Constitution Dei Verbum (no. 25) encourages to implement.

Opis:: Benedict XVI underscores the unchanging validity of the Old Testament. In the exhortation Verbum Domini this is manifested by quotations of texts from the Hebrew Bible or the Septuagint in the context of problems discussed in connection with the theology of any of the New Testament writings. Moreover, the Pope shows Jesus himself as a new perspective of what is foretold by the text of the First Covenant and that is why the Old Testament becomes a lasting point of reference for the conduct of contemporary believers. It is also a unique and uniform source of revelation of the word for the Church. The Pope’s exegesis of the texts is decidedly more theological than literal so it is worthwhile to undertake the analysis of particular quotations in a broader perspective of biblical theology and the entire teaching of the Church. The exhortation sincerely recommends such a task.

Opis:: Przedmiotem analizy jest dokument Papieskiej Komisji Biblijnej „Interpretacja Biblii w Kościele”. Jest on najpierw odczytany w kontekście odnowy biblijnej, jaka miała miejsce w Kościele katolickim w XX wieku, w szczególności w związku z konstytucją Dei Verbum Soboru Watykańskiego II. Nowością dokumenty PKB jest położenie większego akcentu na kwestię aktualizacji i inkulturacji Biblii, jak również zwrócenie uwagi na duszpasterską rolę wspólnot podstawowych podejmujących lekturę Pisma Świętego. Pewną słabością dokumentu „Interpretacja Biblii w Kościele” jest zauważalny w nim brak współpracy biblistów z teologiami pastoralnymi. Ten mankament jest przezwyciężony w adhortacji Verbum Domini, której główny postulat zawiera się w „ubiblijnieniu całego duszpasterstwa”. W konsekwencji adhortacja stwarza nowe możliwości animacji biblijnej duszpasterstwa, rozwijając i pogłębiając postulaty wysunięte wcześniej w dokumencie „Interpretacji Biblii w Kościele”.
The first aim of the article is to place the document The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church within the context of the biblical renewal of the 20th century. Maintaining a continuity with the constitution Dei Verbum, the PBC puts in its document new elements which indicate the place of the Bible in the Church. It concerns mainly the actualization and inculturation of the Holy Scripture. Vital for pastoral work are recommendations on the biblical apostolate, above all those referring to basic communities that read the Bible. The analysis of the fourth chapter of the PBC’s document also yielded some critical comments concerning the presented postulates. The weakness of this document is, without any doubt, the fact that it was written from the biblical scholarly point of view, without the collaboration of pastoral theologians of various specialities. This fundamental deficiency of the document The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church is absent in exhortation Verbum Domini. Postulates presented by Pope Benedict XVI referring to “biblical animation of all pastoral work” show that the Bible is not an addition to pastoral work, but rather its source and essence. Proposals contained in the exhortation Verbum Domini give new opportunities for biblical animation in many areas of the life of Church.

Opis:: Diverse areas of studies are concerned with the answer to the inquiry on the meaning of human existence. Also theology, referring to the Divine Revelation, points out to the meaning of existence, revealed by God. Also Benedict XVI refers to this issue in his apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini – On the Word of God in the life and mission of the Church. Indicating the Eternal Word, that entered the time and was pronounced in human way, at the same time the Holy Father convinces us, that for the person receiving this Word in faith, it can be the source of the meaning of existence. The Divine Revelation becomes the source of the meaning of human life thanks to its rationality, through responses it provides for the deepest human inquiries and desires, and thanks to the perspective of fullness of life transcending the limits of temporality. The meaning of human existence revealed in the Word of God, is properly understood and most fully accessible in the Church. The community of God's people is called to reveal the Eternal Word faithfully as reality, which can be lived, and thanks to which one can live.

Opis:: In the “Post-synodal apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini” Pope Benedict XVI discusses the application of biblical analysis that is based on historical research and theological exegesis, considering these methodological proceedings to be the most accurate for the inspired texts. This method is usually referred to in the apostolic exhortation as a hermeneutic of faith (VD 31, 35, 38, 39, 45, 47, 52). The author explains first the hermeneutic of faith as viewed by Benedict XVI, which consists in a combination of the dominant methodological currents: historical-critical approach and theological exegesis. Then, he proceeds to discuss some fundamental criteria necessary for the analysis of the Holy Scriptures, criteria proposed in the Dogmatic Constitution Dei Verbum no. 12. The Pope often stresses the significance of the exegetical criteria in the exhortation, and makes an appeal to apply them in biblical research. The last part of the article deals with the implications of the hermeneutic of faith for the biblical methodology, with a special emphasis on the practical use of the theological exegesis. The hermeneutic of faith proposed by Benedict XVI attracts the attention of catholic biblical exegesis to the immense hermeneutical tradition of the Church, especially to the exegesis of Church Fathers, and appeals to shape Christian life according to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and to change this life into a testimony.

What does the Holy Spirit say to the Church? At the Second Vatican Council it was noticed that the Church must accept the word of God fully, i.e. the entire revelation, because its identity is contained in it, however, in order to belong to God's people, knowledge alone is not enough, the need for familiarity is not enough. These conclusions were made at the XII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, paying special attention to the liturgy of the Word of God, the sacramental dimension of the sacred texts, the need to study them in depth, to put the word into practice, and to indicate human situations that particularly suit the situations in which the word of Christ was preached.

Opis:: Punkt wyjścia artykułu stanowi przedstawione w adhortacji Verbum Domini współczesne rozeznanie i przeświadczenie Kościoła o potrzebie głoszenia chrześcijanom na nowo i z przekonaniem słowa Bożego, „by mogli konkretnie doświadczyć mocy Ewangelii” (VD 96). Przypomniana w dokumencie nieprzedawniona możliwość „ponawiania spotkania” z osobą Jezusa Chrystusa w słowie Bożym ukazana została na podstawie dwóch aspektów misterium słowa Bożego: jego skutecznego isakramentalnego charakteru. Autor przestrzega przed zawężonym rozumieniem misterium słowa, które opowiada się za jego skutecznością zarezerwowaną jedynie do sprawowania liturgii i wskazuje na przeżywającą dziś renesans praktykę modlitwy słowem Bożym na drodze lectio divina.
This article stresses the necessity, expressed in the Exhortation Verbum Domini, of a new and persuasive proclamation of God’s Word, by which the believers “can concretely experience the power of the Gospel” (VD 96). There is a persistent reminder in the document of the need “to reiterate the meeting” with the person of Jesus Christ through the Word of God. The role of the word in that meeting with Christ, who appears himself in His word (VD 73), is shown in the article with two newly revisited aspects relating to mystery of the word of God: its effectiveness and sacramental nature. With regard to the conditions required to experience the effectiveness of the word of God, the author warns of the danger of reduction in comprehension of the mystery of the word, which should not be reduced only to the liturgy, but enlarged towards a recently revitalized praying practice of lectio divina. This ancient practice offers a true opportunity to experience a personal meeting with Jesus, to feel the supernatural effectiveness of the word, to find out with self‑confidence that “God speaks and responds to our questions” (VD 4). The word of God is much more than the speech of God; it is also a deed of God in the history of humankind, inviting to undertake an effort and making it possible to come into personal relation with Jesus present in God’s Word.

Opis:: Joseph Ratzinger mocno podkreślał różnicę pomiędzy Objawieniem a Pismem Świętym. Boskiego Objawienia nie można zrównać z literą Biblii, skoro Objawieniem jest w gruncie rzeczy sam Chrystus. Rzeczywistość wydarzenia Objawienia jest uprzednia i głębsza wobec biblijnego świadectwa o tym wydarzeniu. Oznacza to, że Objawienie jest zawsze większe od samego Pisma. Utożsamienie Objawienia i Pisma uderza w istotę chrześcijańskiej wiary, która wtedy staje się „religią Księgi” zamiast religii żywego Słowa. Zrozumienie, czym jest Objawienie, a czym Pismo Święte, stanowi również dobry punkt wyjścia do uwzględnienia roli Tradycji.
Joseph Ratzinger strongly emphasized the difference between the Revelation and the Holy Scripture. The divine Revelation can not be made equal with the letter of the Bible for in fact it is Christ himself who is the Revelation. The reality of the Revelation considered as an event is previous to the biblical account of this event and deeper than the latter. It means that the Revelation is always greater than the Scriptures themselves. Considering the Revelation and the Scriptures equitable means undermining the essence of the Christian faith which therefore becomes “religion of the Book” instead of being religion of the living Word. Understanding, what the Revelation and what the Holy Scripture is, is also a good starting point for taking into account the role of Tradition.

Opis:: Benedykt XVI w swojej trosce o stan współczesnej egzegezy przypominał o konieczności stosowania kryteriów teologicznych w interpretacji Pisma Świętego. W ramach postulowanej przez niego „hermeneutyki wiary” należy uwzględniać tak zwane „wielkie zasady interpretacji”. Jedną z nich, którą omówiono w artykule, jest uwzględnienie żywej Tradycji całego Kościoła. Pogłębiona refleksja nad relacją Pismo Święte–Kościół prowadzi papieża do wniosku, że życie Kościoła jest właściwym miejscem interpretacji ksiąg natchnionych. Ojcowie Soboru Watykańskiego II oczekiwali, że studium Pisma Świętego stanie się duszą teologii. Ojciec Święty modyfikuje to życzenie i postuluje, by Pismo Święte czytane w komunii Kościoła stało się duszą studium teologicznego.
Benedict XVI in his concern about the state of the modern exegesis reminded of the necessity to use theological criteria while interpreting the Holy Scripture. The so-called “great principles of interpretation” should be taken into consideration as part of “the hermeneutics of faith” postulated by the Pope. Taking into account the living Tradition of the whole Church, the principle that was described in the article, is one of them. Deep reflection over the connection between the Holy Scripture and the Church makes the Pope conclude that the life of the Church is the proper place for interpreting inspired books. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council expected the study of the Holy Scripture to become the soul of theology. The Holy Father modificated this wish and postulated that the Bible read within the communion of the Church should become the soul of theological studies.

Opis:: Teologia słowa Bożego stanowi jeden z wątków przewodnich całej teologii Josepha Ratzingera, a poniekąd jej zwieńczeniem jest adhortacja Verbum Domini, która będąc wprawdzie rezultatem kolegialnej refleksji nad słowem Bożym podjętej przez Synod Biskupów, nosi także wyraźne rysy osobistych poszukiwań i teologicznych przekonań Benedykta XVI. W artykule autor zwraca uwagę na najbardziej kluczowe, głównie o charakterze dogmatycznym, aspekty tego zagadnienia odczytywane w świetle adhortacji Verbum Domini. W jego pierwszej części wyjaśnia istotę i specyfikę faktu, że „Bóg mówi do człowieka”. Zakorzeniając się w działaniu Boga na rzecz człowieka, słowo Boże ma charakter sakramentalny. Dopełnieniem tego wymiaru słowa Bożego jest jego ścisła więź z działaniem Ducha Świętego, który wpływa na jego przekazywanie, spisanie oraz interpretację. W kolejnej części artykułu autor omawia kwestię przekazywania słowa Bożego. Określa również działanie Ducha Świętego w relacji do słowa Bożego. Trzecia część opracowania zajmuje się zagadnieniem odpowiedzi udzielanej Bogu przez człowieka. Charakter słowa Bożego domaga się od niego przede wszystkim wiary jako warunku i sposobu jego rozumienia oraz jej przeżywania zarówno w wymiarze indywidualnym, jak i wspólnotowym. Analiza poszczególnych punktów adhortacji w odniesieniu do teologii posoborowej pozwoliła na ukazanie zasadniczego znaczenia słowa Bożego w życiu każdego wierzącego, jak i wspólnoty Kościoła.
The theology of the word of God is one of the leitmotifs of Joseph Ratzinger’s entire theology, and in a way its culmination is the apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini, which, although being the result of a collegial reflection on the word of God undertaken during the Synod of Bishops, also bears the unmistakable mark of Benedict XVI’s personal theological search and conviction. In this article, the author highlights the most crucial aspects, mainly of a dogmatic nature, of this problem read in the light of the exhortation Verbum Domini. In its first part, he explains the essence and specificity of the fact that „God speaks to man.” Rooted in God’s action on behalf of man, His word has a sacramental character. Complementing this sacramental dimension of God’s word is its close relationship with the action of the Holy Spirit, which influences the word’s transmission, writing and interpretation. In the next section of the article, the author discusses the transmission of the word of God. He also defines the action of the Holy Spirit in relation to the word of God. The third part of the paper deals with the response that might be given to God. The nature of the word of God demands, first of all, faith as a condition and way of understanding and living it both individually and communally. The analysis of individual points of the exhortation in relation to post-conciliar theology has made it possible to show the fundamental importance of the word of God in the life of every believer as well as the community of the Church.
