Opis:
Detection and classification of vegetation is a crucial technical task in the management of natural resources since vegetation serves as a foundation for all living things and has a significant impact on climate change such as impacting terrestrial carbon dioxide (CO2). Traditional approaches for acquiring vegetation covers such as field surveys, map interpretation, collateral and data analysis are ineffective as they are time consuming and expensive. In this paper vegetation regions are automatically detected by applying simple but effective vegetation indices Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) on red(R) and near infrared (NIR) bands of Landsat-8 satellite image. Remote sensing technology makes it possible to analyze vegetation cover across wide areas in a cost-effective manner. Using remotely sensed images, the mapping of vegetation requires a number of factors, techniques, and methodologies. The rapid improvement of remote sensing technologies broadens possi-bilities for image sources making remotely sensed images more accessible. The dataset used in this paper is the R and NIR bands of Level-1 Tier 1 Landsat-8 optical remote sensing image acquired on 6th September 2013, is processed and made available to users on 2nd May 2017. The pre-processing involving sub-setting operation is performed using the ERDAS Imagine tool on R and NIR bands of Landsat-8 image. The NDVI and SAVI are utilized to extract vegetation features automatically by using python language. Finally by establishing a threshold, vegetation cover of the research area is detected and then classified.

Results of many years research of geo-botanic of the Kurile Islands are presented in article. Vegetation spatial structure of the Kurile Islands is conditioned by complex interactions of endogenous and exogenous factors. Meridional extension for almost 1200 km determines a significant climatic differenciation within archipelago. It is resulted in changes of vertical vegetation zones in the different regions of Kurile Islands. System of hot and cold currents in the adjacent sea water is the factor of asymmetry of vegetation. Special traits of archipelago are determined by the volcanic activity

Application of laser scanning data in the analysis of the changes in vegetation vertical structure and changes in a semi-natural section of the Vistula valleyChanges in vegetation cover are one of the features affecting the functioning of river valleys. Vegetation influences the geomorphological and hydrological processes within a water basin. Controlling the quality and quantity of vegetation is crucial for keeping the eco- and geosystem balance. Until now the methods applied in controlling vegetation were not efficient (field work) or were not providing enough information about the vertical structure of plant communities (i.e. analyses based on data obtained from optical remote sensing do not allow precise determination of vegetation height). The aim of this study was to determine the changes in the extent and vertical structure of the vegetation within a semi-natural section of the Vistula river valley in Krakow between 2006 and 2012 using airborne laser scanning. The application of such data in this type of research was also evaluated. The study revealed that, in spite of spite of maintenance work, the extent of vegetation cover increased during the monitoring period. Data verification indicated high precision and suitability of these data in the determination of the vegetation cover changes at the local scale. A wider access to data obtained from airborne laser scanning should soon result in the proliferation of studies conducted using airborne laser scanning which will positively impact the cost and quality of such research.

The influence of some ecological factors to aquatic and marsh vegetation was studied during 1998-2000. Three basic vegetation units (Caricetum buekii, Typhetum latifoliae and Ceratophylletum submersi) and three transitional communities were defined in the belt transect, which was established along the moisture gradient. The content of available soil nutrients in individual vegetation types differed only in case of the Ceratophyllum submersum community, where a higher magnesium and nitrogen content accumulated due to specific environmental conditions. Water and marsh vegetation is usually characterised by a pronounced spatial and temporal dynamics. In the studied area, its zonation was dependent from the terrain morphology, and both depth and duration of floods. The fluctuation of ground and surface water table during a three-year period caused changes in the occurrence and cover of several species (e.g. Carex buekii, Typha latifolia, aquatic macrophytes). Pronounced changes in the cover of some species occurred even within a single vegetation season due to the long-term sink of water table below the ground surface.

The phytosociological database Polish Vegetation Database collects relevés of all vegetation types in Poland. The database was established in 2007 and is located at Department of Biodiversity and Plant Cover Protection, University of Wrocław (http://synbiot.uni.wroc.pl). On March 2012, the database included 40000 relevés collected between 1927 and 2011. Most of relevés was taken from published papers and represents almost all types of habitats of Poland. Large groups of relevés represent meadows and pastures (Molinio-Arrhnehteretrea), broadleaf forests (Querco-Fagetea), arable land communities (Stellarietea), coniferous forests (Vaccinio-Piceetea) and eutrophic reed communities (Phragmitetea). In comparison to other countries in Central Europe, Polish Vegetation Database currently belongs to medium-sized databases, with full functionality and accessibility. The present article describes its development, basic operational information and how it can be used in analysis of vegetation in Poland.

Opis:
The problem of slope stability is one of the most difficult issues, which constitutes the object of interest of engineering geology and geotechnics. The impact of vegetation, well developed bush root system in particular, on the improvement of slope and escarpment stability, is one of the often-omitted aspects in engineering practice. Vegetation may perform a double function within a geological medium: - strengthening – by means of soil reinforcement and anchoring, binding of grains, which improves strength parameters, reduction of pore pressure and groundwater table by means of water interception; - weakening – by means of the impact of specific gravity of vegetation on the subsoil, the impact of wind on a tree, which may lead to its inclination and creation of voids in the soil, moisture changes leading to shrinkage and loosening of the ground (Najder 2003, Greenwood et. al. 2004). Plant roots demonstrate much tensile strength. They increase the ground’s cohesion owing to their friction and adhesive properties. Changes of these parameters depend on the spatial reach and the type of root system. The following types may be distinguished: intensive (concentrated) and extensive (diffused) (Reubens et al. 2007). A given root type impact zone depends on the location of the potential slip surface and the kind of mass movement (Koda et al. 2010). A landslide in Pietrzejowice, located on the Proszowice Plateau, at a distance of approximately 25 km from Cracow, is the object of the research (Kondracki 2010). Landslide movement was initiated on 14 May 2010. At night on 3–4 June further development of the landslide occurred, leading to the damage of two residential buildings. Surface deformations occurred in the area of approximately 3 ha. A geological medium was subdivided into five geotechnical layers: silty clay with different consistency and Miocene clay (Jaskólski et al. 2012). Numerical analyses of the slope stability were carried out in the FLAC 7.0 programme, whose computational algorithm is based on the finite difference method. Two options of the root system development – concentrated and diffused – were adopted in the model. Numerical simulations were carried out as per the scheme (Pilecki et al. 2014): 1) Static analysis of the data set for variable soil and water conditions with Duncan and Wright method (Kaczmarek & Popielski 2015). 2) Elaboration of the set of input data. 3) Elaboration of the physical model. 4) Elaboration of design model along with adopted initial and design conditions. The following options were considered: - variant I – natural slope condition, - variant II – condition after water accumulation, variant III – development of concentrated root system, - variant IV – development of diffused root system, - variant V – water accumulation of option III, - variant VI – water accumulation of option IV. 5) Calculation of the results and their verification. 6) Analysis of the probability of occurrence of mass movements for the adopted design options. Statistical analysis of the set of input data and results of numerical simulations allowed determining the impact of the root system on changes of the safety factor with the soil variable and water conditions. The route of the slide surface and determination of the probability of the loss of stability, with local or global nature, are also important pieces of information. The results of numerical simulations indicate an increased value of safety factor for the slope with extensive root system. The results are of a reconnaissance nature and they describe the impact of the root system on stability in a general manner.

Vegetation mapping is an active research area in the domain of remote sensing. This study proposes a methodology for the mapping of vegetation by integrating several vegetation indices along with original spectral bands. The Land Use Land Cover classification was performed by two powerful Machine Learning techniques, namely Random Forest and AdaBoost. The Random Forest algorithm works on the concept of building multiple decision trees for the final prediction. The other Machine Learning technique selected for the classification is AdaBoost (adaptive boosting), converts a set of weak learners into strong learners. Here, multispectral satellite data of Dehradun, India, was utilised. The results demonstrate an increase of 3.87% and 4.32% after inclusion of selected vegetation indices by Random Forest and AdaBoost respectively. An Overall Accuracy (OA) of 91.23% (kappa value of 0.89) and 88.59% (kappa value of 0.86) was obtained by means of the Random Forest and AdaBoost classifiers respectively. Although Random Forest achieved greater OA as compared to AdaBoost, interestingly AdaBoost provided better class-specific accuracy for the Shrubland class compared to Random Forest. Furthermore, this study also evaluated the importance of each individual feature used in the classification. Results demonstrated that the NDRE, GNDVI, and RTVIcore vegetation indices, and spectral bands (NIR, and Red-Edge), obtained higher importance scores.

Monitoring the agricultural drought of paddy rice fields is a crucial aspect of preparing for proper action in maintaining food security in Indonesia. The Aceh Province is one of Indonesia’s national rice production centers, especially Aceh Besar Regency; it includes three central districts; Indrapuri, Kuta Cot Glie, and Seulimeum. Satellite-Sentinel 2A data have been tested to monitor the drought levels of around 2,803 Ha in the three districts in this study. This study aimed to determine the drought level in Indrapuri, Kuta Cot Glie, and Seulimeum districts, Aceh Besar Regency’s paddy rice fields using Sentinel-2A data imagery. The vegetation conditions index (VCI) of Sentinel-2 data was utilized to identify a vegetative drought level in the area for the 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 growing seasons. The vegetation inertia index is derived from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The results show that the VCI looked volatile, but the trendline increased by four percent, from 92.56 in July 2019 to 96.08 in July 2021. Most areas on the dates investigated found that the no drought category was still dominant. The designated data analyzed found that the June 2022 data tend to be distributed to the drought in extreme, severe, moderate, and mild increases compared to the previous data investigated. This figure shows an increasing drought in the study area, and the average drought index is in the category of mild drought. In addition, there has been a trendline decline in the value of NDVI in recent years, causing agricultural land for paddy rice fields to be slightly vulnerable to drought.

The paper presents results of the studies conducted to determine causes and directions of transformations in vegetation of meadow-pasture communities in the area of the Wielki Łęg Obrzański [Great Obra Floodmeadows]. Multifaceted natural and habitat analyses were conducted on over 1800 relevés prepared in the vegetation seasons of 2005–2009 according to Braun-Blanquet. On their basis the phytosociological and floristic structure was analysed and habitat conditions were determined by phytoindication. Moreover, laboratory methods were applied in soil analyses to determine contents of basic macro- and microelements and groundwater table levels were recorded. Results referred to the documentation and archive literature made it possible to determine causes of transformations in plant communities in that area and outline probable directions in which succession was progressing. A lack of regular land use patterns is seen as the primary cause for the transformation in the flora of the Wielki Łęg Obrzański, particularly in the last 20 years. A considerable limitation of land use in certain sections of this area has led to the initiation of dominance of nitrophilic species such as Urtica dioica, Cirsium arvense, Potentilla anserina or Galium mollugo, while in the thinned sward it led to the development of grass species with very limited economic importance. Another equally important factor affecting the structure of vegetation cover is connected with air and water relations in soils, determined by the drainage system operating there for the last 200 years and by precipitation.

Information about vegetation condition is needed for the effective management of natural resources and the estimation of the effectiveness of nature conservation. The aim of the study was to analyse the condition of non-forest mountain communities: synanthropic communities and natural grasslands. UNESCO’s M&B Karkonosze Transboundary Biosphere Reserve was selected as the research area. The analysis was based on 40 field test polygons and APEX hyperspectral images. The field measurements allowed the collection of biophysical parameters - Leaf Area Index (LAI), fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (fAPAR) and chlorophyll content - which were correlated with vegetation indices calculated using the APEX images. Correlations were observed between the vegetation indices (general condition, plant structure) and total area of leaves (LAI), as well as fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (fAPAR). The outcomes show that the non-forest communities in the Karkonosze are in good condition, with the synanthropic communities characterised by better condition compared to the natural communities.

Methane is the second most important man-made greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. For more than the last 20 years the increase of the rate of CH4 emission has been varying dramatically each year. This trend is common worldwide, though in different parts of the world unevenly intense, conditioned by the amount of emissions from natural and anthropogenic sources. Peatland ecosystems are one of the natural methane emitters, responsible for about 24% of the total CH4 emissions. Methane emission from wetlands is the balance between the processes of methanogenesis and methanotrophy with an active role of wetlands plants composition. Participation of vegetation in the reduction the emissions by 30-35% was confirmed. Association of methanotrophic bacteria with plants has been already recognized by Raghoebarsing and colleagues, who showed that methanotrophic bacteria, as endosymbionts and epibionts, live both inside and outside the cells of Sphagnum sp. The main aim of this study was to estimate methane emissions from Moszne peatland, dominated by: Sphagnum sp., Eriophorum vaginatum, Carex nigra and Vaccinium uliginosum.

The effect of instream vegetation growth has largely been ignored by hydrological and geomorphological research in river environments, which focused instead on the function of riparian vegetation as a regulator of bank stability or as a buffer for dissolved and particulate matter entering the channel from the hillside. However, in many lowland streams, instream vegetation can be very intensive, resulting in high biomass levels during the growing season. Instream plants have a significant influence on the dynamics of flow, sediment, and nutrients. Plant growth can cause increased frictional resistance to flow and can have a short-to medium-term effects on the geomorphology of the channel. Additionally, plant development influences the velocity of river flow, affects sedimentation dynamics and increases flood risk. To achieve a balance between flooding and ecological management of rivers in the presence of vegetation, a reliable method is required to predict the resistance of channels. In the current study, a two-dimensional hydrodynamic and morphodynamic model is developed and applied using a new scaling expression of shear stress based on vegetation characteristics. These first attempts at field simulations showed qualitatively acceptable results and demonstrated the effectiveness of the model in predicting hydraulic parameters in the presence of vegetation. This model is useful in predicting the effect of vegetation on stream flow and river morphology, as well as in managing flood hazards and stream ecology.

The aim of my study was to determine changes in the seed bank and vegetation during the process of overgro-wing of the xerothermic grassland situated on the slopes of the White Mountain (349 m a. s. l., the Central Roztocze Region, South-Eastern Poland). I also examined whether the changes of vegetation can be predicted if we know the structure of the burned seed flora. To achieve this goal I used two sets of data: one collected from three different environments (grassland, brushwood and woodland) at the same time (toposequence), and the other collected twice from the same place at the interval of seven years (chronosequence). I stated that the appearance of even a small number of ornitochorous seeds and their seedlings can be treated as a signal that the bush encroachment will accelerate. Seed number seems to decrease during succession in the analysed sequence of plant communities. The total number of species in the seed bank did not change in the most dynamic plant communities: grassland and brushwood, and it was significantly higher there than in the seed bank of woodland. During the time of observation, the most important quantitative and qualitative changes took place in grassland vegetation, which is more similar to brushwood vegetation now than it was at the beginning of the study.

The study aimed at evaluation of the current state and description of changes in plant communities in wetland habitats in the Czarna river valley and at recommendation of ef-fective methods for the renewal of vegetation on the basis of detail analysis of its space-time changes. The methods applied included a compilation of field studies (inventory, cartographic study and phytosociological analyses), valorisation of nature, numerical syntaxonomy with the use of MVSP program (Cluster Analysis and PCA) and digital methods GIS (Geomedia Professional 6.1). The field study of the vegetation cover of the Czarna river valley was performed in the years 2010–2011. The space-time analysis of changes in the vegetation cover and renewal of vegetation was made with the use of archive aerial photographs from 1966, topographic maps from 1982 and 2000 and orthophotomaps from 2011. The vegetation cover of the Czarna river valley was found to be composed of 12 plant communities representing 6 syntaxonomic classes, and to in-clude sites of 8 protected species. The space-time analysis of the vegetation cover of the Czarna river valley, taking into account the changes in the forms of the valley use over the period 1966–2011, showed that the area occupied by forest communities in wetland habitats as a result of secondary succession has increased by 0.16 km2, so by 27% with respect to the area of 0.4406 km2 from 1966. Chronological changes in the vegetation cover over this area analysed on the basis of GIS and digital methods indicate that in the wet meadows in the valley studied the secondary succession leads to the reproduction of the potential forest communities that were growing there once in the past. The renewal of forestless greeneries in the Czarna river valley is related to changes in the use of the area realised by mowing and restoration of the earlier hydrological regime in the entire catchment area, changed by the network of channels and drainage ditches.

Predomination of sandy bedload is typical of the anastomosing channels of the Narew River. Several types of in-channel accretionary macroforms have been found in these channels: side bars, concave-bank bars, plug bars, point bars, linguoid bars, and mid-channel bars. The first three types are relatively rare, point bars occur only exceptionally, while linguoid bars and mid-channel bars are quite common. The bars usually occur in main channels, which are the master routes of sand transport in the whole anastomosing system of the Narew. The lower parts of the bars are built of coarse- and medium-grained sand, similarly to the sediments in the deeper parts of the channels. Fine-grained sand, locally alternating with organic-rich muddy sand, predominates usually in the upper parts; peat with high content of sand is present in the highest parts of some bars. All bars are rapidly colonised and stabilised by plants. It is for this reason and due to the low energy of the river that the bar sediments have a high preservation potential. The development of bars is usually not accompanied by lateral migration of channels. Consequently, sediment accretion in bars is one of the factors leading to gradual narrowing of channels. Deposits of some sand-bars, when preserved in fossil record, may probably be represented by characteristic "wings" in the outer parts of ribbon-like sand bodies.

The vegetation of the Chernihiv city sands (natural and technogenic origin) has rather high syntaxonomic diversity (17 associations and 5 initial communities) and the ruderal phytocoenoses prevail. Natural phytocenoses are represented to a small extent (Cyperetum flavescentis Koch 1926, Dichostylidi–Helochloetum alopecuroidis (Timar 1950) Pietsch 1973, Artemisia scoparia–Dianthus borbasii community, Kochietum arenariae Fijalk 1978). Synanthropic psammophytes species communities that are more resistant to anthropogenic influence, are formed under urban conditions. The ecological range of vegetation of sandy alluvia varies from xerophytic phytocoenoses in mineral-poor sand (Kochietum arenariae) to the communities, which indicate waterlogged areas with increased mineralization of water and saline bottom sediments (Typhetum laxmannii Nedulcu 1968). Itispossibletoobserve the adventization and apophization of sand vegetation, one of the indicators of which is the rupture of coenotic connections between the species of the community. These phenomena indicate that the process of synanthropization of the vegetation cover of the city keeps intensifying, and first of all, occurs in places of newly formed technogenic ecotopes.

The average annual temperature might have been 2–4ºC warmer and the annual precipitation some 300 mm greater than at present in Lithuania. There was probably no permanent snow cover during winters. Isopollen maps for the main forest constituents allow deduction of the directions of migration of individual tree taxa.

Flood plains are a specific sedimentary environment. They are a natural clarifier and filter for rivers carrying large amounts of heavy metals, biogenic elements and other contaminants transported during high water and floods. Plenty of it is accumulated in the riverbank zone of channels i.e. a buffer strip. This is a relatively narrow strip of land situated along watercourses, often covered with riparian plants. It is functionally associated with river flooding and it forms a transition zone to ecosystems of mixed (oak-lime-hornbeam) forest plants. These plants unquestionably grow into a natural protective system of surface waters against contamination flowing down from areas used for agricultural purposes. Buffer zones provide the opportunity for self-cleaning, and according researchers they are among the most efficient natural tools to protect a catchment area. They can reduce the amount of sediments and nutrients carried by surface water flowing down from agricultural areas. Besides positive effects, the zones are accompanied by the phenomenon of flow blockage, which is particularly hazardous in case of directing great water away from its main channel. Shrubby vegetation retains small elements of plant origin and thus the free flow of water stopped. The article analyses the effect of vegetation structure density on flow conditions for small plant debris on a laboratory scale.

Drought is a natural phenomenon as it often occurs in the area of Yasothon province, northeastern of Thailand. It causes effects on vegetation condition in the area. Drought information might be useful for local government to prepare for prevention and mitigation plan in the future. For this reason, the primary objective of the research was to conduct the examination of this province to find severe drought years. Firstly, the researcher needed to find Normalized Differences Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) by analyzing monthly Landsat data acquired at different periods of time from January to December 2014, 2015, and 2016, covering 4,096 km2. Then, the researcher needed to find relationship between VCI and monthly rainfall represented in term of space and time. As results, VCI and its relationship with monthly rainfall were congruent. VCI showed that the drought area was 33.87% or 1,387.32 km2 of studied area in 2014, 16.24% or 665.19 km2 of studied area in 2015 and 27.95% or 1,144.83 km2 of studied area in 2016. Therefore, the most and the least severe drought years were 2014, 2016, and 2015 respectively.

Their current state is referred to as a hull form. However, due to the presence of the expansive species characteristic of the above-mentioned communities, continued development can be expected towards fully developed phytocoenoses. The thesis founded about the inflence of the neighboring forest communities on the species composition of the vegetation of the subject has not been confimed. There were only three forest and scrub species with a negligible sward participation.

Monitoring the plant moisture has a significant role in geographical research. It may be used, among the others, for climate modelling, agricultural predicting, rational water management, drought monitoring and determining vulnerability to the occurrence of the fire. Traditional methods, based on field measurements, are the most accurate, but also time-consuming. Therefore these methods can be applied only in a limited area. In order to explore bigger areas remote sensing methods are useful. To analyse plant condition and water content vegetation indices can be used. Their calculations are based on the reflectance in different bands. Despite many studies conducted on the development of remote sensing indices, still there is a need for verification of their accuracy and usefulness by comparing the results obtained through remote sensing tools with the results of field measurements. In this paper three indices are used: Moisture Stress Index (MSI), Normalized Difference Infrared Index (NDII) and transformation Tasseled Cap (the Wetness band). The aim of this study was to compare the value of vegetation indices calculated using images from Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper with the results of field measurement from five test areas of different type of land cover: cereal crops, non-cereal crops, forests, meadows and pastures. Research was carried out in province Ontario (Canada) and consisted of two stages. The first stage was the fi eld measurements, where the specified number of plant samples was collected and water content was calculated. The second stage consisted of the preparation of relevant satellite images (atmospheric correction and making the mosaic) and the calculation of vegetation indices. The study has shown, that statistical relationships between data sets obtained through remote sensing indices and calculated on the basis of field measurements are diverse for different indices. MSI and NDII values are significantly correlated with the water content in plants (R= -0.62 and 0.56, respectively). The correlation of TCW was rated as moderate (R=0.30). Spatial distribution of water content based on maps created using NDII and MSI is similar. It was noticed that TC Wetness transformation overestimates water content in cereal plants (smaller water content) and underestimates it in natural green plant ecosystems, which generally have higher water content. As a result, the range of water content values obtained from TCW is more narrow (dominates the class of 60-70% water in plants) than the range of values calculated using NDII and MSI. Both indices have more uniform distribution dominated by the classes of moderate water content (50-60%), rather wet plants (60-70%) and very wet plants (70-80%). Each index is characterized by different distribution of the water content. In general values calculated on the basis of NDII and MSI are higher than calculated using TCW. In order to perform more accurate analysis between values calculated using satellite images and the results of field measurements, the values of particular types of land cover should be compared.

The negative impact of global and regional climate changes upon the crop yields leads to the violation of the crop production stability. The development of reliable methods for assessment of the climatic factors by the reaction of the crops to them in order to minimize the impact of climatic stresses upon the sustainability of food systems is an urgent scientific task. This problem was studied on the example of growing corn. A mathematical analysis of the main meteorological indicators for 16 years of research has been performed on the basis of which the frequency and direction of the occurrence of atypical and extreme weather conditions in various periods of the corn vegetation season were established by the coefficient of significance of deviations of the weather elements from the average long-term norm. It has been proved that the probability of occurrence of such weather conditions in the period from April to September is 38–81% in terms of the average temperature of the month, and 31–69% in terms of precipitation. By using the information base of the corn yields in a stationary field experiment with the gradations of factors: A (the fertilizer option) – A1-A12, B (the crop care method) – B1-B3, C (the hybrid) – C1-C7, the most critical month of the corn ontogeny was established when the weather has a decisive influence upon the formation of the crop. With the help of the correlation-regression analysis it was proved that the corn yield most significantly depends on the average monthly temperature in June, and for the hybrids with FАО 200–299 – on the amount of precipitation in the month of May. The obtained mathematical models make it possible to predict the yield of corn at a high level of reliability depending on the indicators of the main climate-forming factors in June, that is, even before the flowering of the plants (before the stage of ВВСН 61).

Opis:
Digital elevation models (DEM), including the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), are used in many branches of geoscience as an ultimate dataset representing our planet’s surface, making it possible to investigate processes that are shaping our world. The SRTM model exhibits elevation bias or systematic error over forests and vegetated areas due to the microwaves’ peculiar properties that penetrate the vegetation layer to a certain depth. Numerous investigations identified that the penetration depth depends on the forest density and height. In this contribution, two methods are proposed to remove the impact of the vegetation impenetrability effect. The first method is founded on the multiple regression of two forest characteristics, namely forest height and forest density. The second method uses a lookup table approach. The lookup table and the multiple regression explanatory variables are taken from the freely available datasets, including the forest density data (MODIS_VCF) and global tree height map (GTHM). An important role in this research is played by the Ice, Clouds, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) data. The accuracy tests indicate that the first method eliminates approximately 68% of the elevation bias, while the second method appears to be more effective, leading to almost complete removal of the vegetation bias from the SRTM data. The methods are fine-tuned to the local coniferous forests in Poland. Additional studies are required to finetune the methods for the leaf-off state of deciduous forests. However, a new set of parameters for both methods can be quickly developed for different locations and forest types. Both methods’ functionality and effectiveness can be improved once more accurate forest tree height and vegetation density data become available. These methods are universal in mitigating the vegetation bias from the Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) derived model and photogrammetric models.

This study provides original data on the impact of human activity on vegetation under the specific conditions of the Kastanozem from the Kostanay region (northern Kazakhstan). Radical changes in land use are provoking deposition in vegetation. The question remains whether natural vegetation will return or whether a different type of vegetation will be created under the specific conditions of the Kastanozems soils. The evaluation of vegetation took place in the fields that were abandoned in different time horizons. Height, cover, biomass weight and species composition of vegetation were monitored. The vegetation of abandoned fields is characterized by low species diversity. Succession runs from annual species to a stage where perennial dicotyledonous species with a deep root system dominate. Spontaneous vegetation leaves a sufficient amount of biomass on the soil surface, which assumes that the land will be protected from undesirable phenomena such as erosion and desertification processes.

The article aims to present the research method used to evaluate discolouration and defoliation of trees and tree damage in the city of Białystok in Poland. The analyses were done using AISA hyperspectral images. Field measurements encompassed determining the locations, species and levels of discolouration and defoliation of trees. Remote sensing indices of vegetation were calculated and correlated with the field-measured values of discolouration and defoliation. Based on that, values of discolouration and defoliation were calculated and evaluated against the field studies. The RMSE of the acquired data was around 16%. Using parameter values, a map of tree damage was drawn up. Based on the analysis, it can be stated that a significant number of trees is undamaged, although a large portion of the trees falls into the warning class.

In the southern Kiskunság the natural vegetation (sand steppe, fen meadow, fen or marsh and alkali vegetation) survived in the dune slack meadows (DSM). The vegetation of these meadows are species rich, and has high natural value. The main goal of this study is to reveal the hydrological backgrounds in order to help conservation of the natural values. Two DSM was investigated (MM and CS site): vegetation was sampled, observation wells were planted, and data of other wells in similar position were used to describe the hydrological background of the vegetation. The characteristic groundwater level of the same vegetation type in the relatively wet 2005 year was higher in MM site, than in the CS site. We suppose, that this is a consequence of the earlier vegetation change because of the strong decrease of groundwater level in the region of MM site. The model of hydraulic fl ow system showed that the DSMs are situated in hydraulic discharge zones. We suppose, that an upward fl ow plays an important role in development of alkali vegetation in the CS site. Cross-correlation coeffi cient between groundwater and previous precipitation indicated a quick infi ltration of rainwater into the soil, and a pressure front of the groundwater stream reaching the area of well after 22–23 days after rainfall. The quick and strong regional hydrological changes, especially the decrease of groundwater level would endanger this valuable vegetation, but certain resistance and plasticity of it is rather possible.

Opis:
Noise measurements have been carried out at eleven different sites located in three prominent cities of the Tarai region of India to evaluate the effectiveness of vegetation belts in reducing traffic noise along the roadsides. Attenuation per doubling of distance has been computed for each site and excess attenuation at different 1/3 octave frequencies has been estimated. The average excess attenuation is found to be approximately 15 dB over the low frequencies (200 Hz to 500 Hz) and between 15 dB to 20 dB over the high frequencies (8 kHz to 12.5 kHz). Over the critical middle frequencies (1-4 kHz), the average excess attenuation (between 10-15 dB) though not as high, is still significant, with a number of sites showing an excess attenuation of 15 dB or more at 1 kHz. The results indicate that sufficiently dense vegetation belts along the roadsides may prove as effective noise barriers and significant attenuation may be achieved over the critical middle frequencies (1-4 kHz).

Opis:
The purpose of this paper was to determine long-range and spatial variability of the start and end dates of a period of intense vegetation in Poland in 1966–2015. The article is based on average monthly air temperature values acquired for 20 Polish stations for 1966–2015, made available by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – the National Research Institute. Based on the obtained data, the dates of the beginning and end of the intense vegetation period were determined. In this study, the intense vegetation period was defined as one with an average daily air temperature ≥10°C. The mathematical formulas proposed by Gumiński (1948) were used to determine the dates of the beginning and end of the period. A period of intense vegetation in Poland in the years 1966–2015 has extended. The dates of the beginning of the period of intense vegetation changed in the latitudinal system from the south to the north while the intensity of changes in the date of the beginning in the studied area was characterized by longitudinal distribution – the most prominent in the west of Poland. The end of the intense vegetation period occurs earliest in the north-east of Poland, and latest in the west and the south. The end date changes were less significant than the start date changes. The length of the intense vegetation period ranges from the north-east to the south-west of Poland, and the most dramatic changes occurred in the west and the south-east of Poland.

Modern urban development in Ukraine can hardly be called controlled. Irrational, uncomfortable and even aggressive housing development poses a threat to historic buildings and urban ecology. The territories of the national preserves are legally protected from any arbitrary actions of developers. The Metropolitan Garden of the “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” National Reserve may serve as a striking example of a comprehensive study and a basis for sustainable development of the urban environment. For decades, this location has been the subject of interdisciplinary research. An archaeological study in this area began in the 1950s and, intermittently, has been continued. During that time, many archaeological monuments of different types and from different historical periods have been discovered. Some of them are researched more than others, but together they mirror the main stages of the Metropolitan Garden’s historical development and reflect the changes in the way it has been used. As a result of many years of research, more than 700 square meters have been surveyed; they can be divided into four main cultural and chronological layers: 1) the Early Iron Age (6th-5th centuries BC), 2) the period of Kievan Rus’ (9th-13th centuries), 3) the Russo-Lithuanian period of the 14th-16th centuries, 4) modern times (17th-19th centuries). The archaeological research has resulted in data on the Metropolitan Garden’s primary relief and identification of two periods of natural and anthropogenic development of the location. This was accompanied by an archaeological study, historical studies of the Archimandrit’s Garden and its transformation into the Metropolitan Garden as well as the peculiarities of its planning structure. The article also presents reconstructions of all the types of the flora that could have grown in the Pechersk Monastery since Kievan Rus’ and a the study of the vegetation of the existing garden since the 17th century. Today the authorities are considering creation of an Archaeological Park within the Metropolitan Garden of the National Reserve “Kiev-Pechersk Lavra”.

Alluvial soils, which are found under the grasslands in the study area, are formed by erosive and sedimentation activity of waters from surface and river flows. These waters in river valleys, depending on the activity duration, flow speed and the frequency of overflows, determine the spatial distribution of sediments, the variability of their mechanical composition, as well as the layers thickness, the content of organic matter and the diversity of the lay of alluvial material areas. The mentioned factors have significant influence on the structure of soil profile and on the elements circulation in the trophic chain: soil – water – plant – animal – human. The aim of the study was the typological identification of soils in the floodplain of the Warta estuary valley, as well as the characterization of their basic physical and chemical features, with the special consideration to contamination with heavy metals. Moreover, the chemical content of the plant communities in the study area was described. The studies were conducted in the Warta valley on the passage between Świerkocin and Kłopotowo, on grasslands which are part of the right flood terrace of the valley, between the water surface and the levee (floodbank). Objects of varied habitat conditions and vegetation were isolated on the chosen area for the specific research .The characterization of soil conditions was performed according to the methods commonly used in pedology. Based on the description of morphological features of soil pits, the following subtypes of alluvial soils were distinguished: heavy humus, medium brown, actual medium, actual very light. Shaped plant communities were qualified to the following floristic types: Glyceria maxima, Phalaris arundinacea, Poa trivialis, Poa pratensis, Festuca rubra and Corynephorus cannescens. The analyzed soils were evaluated as rich in general forms: P, K, Mg, Ca, Na i S. Compacted soils were usually rich in absorbable phosphorus, the content of absorbable magnesium was from very low to high, while in very light soils the content of phosphorus and magnesium was law. Regardless of the soil type, the content of absorbable potassium found in all soil samples was very low. The analyzed soils had the natural content of heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Mn, Fe), only in surface layer of heavy humus alluvial soil high contamination with cadmium and raised contamination with zinc were found. Varied content of macroelements was found in the grassland sward of the individual study points. The richest in P, K, Mg, Ca and Na was the community of rough bluegrass (Poa trivialis), located on river actual medium alluvial soil in the vicinity of embankment and subject to the constant flooding of Warta. The poorest in the analyzed heavy metals were the communities of Poa pratensis and Festuca rubra with Corynephorus cannescens on actual very light alluvial soil. Only in case of lead, high content in the sward of Phalaris arundinacea formed on actual medium alluvial soil near the water surface was found. As regards other heavy metals there was no excess of their content in the grassland sward of the studied area.

Opis:
Aeolian landscapes are typical of the area of Prebaikalye and Transbaikalye. They occur both on the shore of Baikal and at various distances from the lake and they are related to areas of boreal forest and steppe. They are characterized by both natural and anthropogenic origin. The former are more typical of Transbaikalye, where they represent old dune forms at different stages of formation, stabilized by pine forest vegetation. These landscapes probably originated at the end of the Pleistocene and the beginning of the Holocene. Anthropogenic aeolian landscapes are more clearly visible and noticeable because of the geomorphologic processes occurring there at present. They occur in both of the regions and they are related to diverse economic activities of man in the past hundred, up to two hundred, years. The dominating type of surface features is that of wind erosion, which is related to old forms being blown away. The accumulative effect of wind is definitely of minor significance there; this can be seen in minor size and diversity of forms. Vegetation, which is clearly psammophylous, adapts itself to these contemporary aeolian processes. This is mostly herbaceous vegetation, or less often shrubs or undershrub. It creates a range of plant communities and associations, frequently of unique nature and with peculiar features of adaptation of plants to life in heavy habitat conditions.

Active surface reflectance in a UV/VIS/NIR range deserve special attention among remote sensing techniques due to the potential of information it carries. Data are diversified in terms of spatial, spectral and temporal resolution, resulting in differences in data comparison and collection of material that may be redundant. The aim of the study was to assess whether the use of high-resolution data in analysis of an intensively used meadow is justified. 116 images from Planet sensor were analysed, registered from 2016 to 2019. NDVI, EVI and GLI were calculated for all of the terms. Resampling of data was carried out, with the use of 30 m grid, prepared on the basis of 3 m Planet pixel. Data with different resolution was compared. Seasonal course of values was similar in all cases, values of chosen deciles were nearly the same, however, differences in minimum and maximum values were noted.  It was concluded that the use of high-resolution data is not advisable in the context of the spatial variability of seasonal vegetation indices in the case of a terrain with homogeneous land cover. Values of structurally simplified indices are less homogeneous than that of indicators consisting of a greater number of modifying factors.

Recent researches have determined that vegetation is one of the essential factors for game habitat quality. Vegetation is important in the form of the following components: as a food supplier, as a shelter provider, as the creator and regulator of the micro-climate of the habitat, etc. Past practice has shown that the classical methods for evaluating habitat factors involve a lot of subjectivity and often lead to an unrealistic estimate of hunting ground capacity that can affect sustainable game management. Instead of the classical analyses, paper proposes assessment of this factor using Geographic Information System (GIS). NDVI – normalized difference vegetation index is a graphical indicator that can be used to analyze images obtained by remote sensing and is used for these purposes. The researched area was hunting ground "Kapetanski rit" – Kanjiža, Serbia. In order to assess the vegetation factor, the analysis of satellite images is done for two periods of the year (May and December/January). In May the game prepares shelters for bringing an offspring and the period December/January is taken as part of the year when vegetation coverage is minimal due to winter and game is in need of additional food and shelter. Based on the results and maps, the user of the hunting ground can have a clearer view of the vegetation types and distribution, hence assistance in planning and analyzing the territorial distribution of the game. Comparing classical methods for evaluating vegetation and the use of GIS for this purpose shows the advantages of new improved GIS methodology.

The Atriplex littoralis L. is a rare and endangered species in Poland and many other countries in Europe. In Poland it is mainly found on the west coast and also rarely in central parts. It has been seen in Puck Bay and the Gulf of Gdańsk as well as in Hel Peninsula. The grassleaf orache is a halophyte, terophyte and a sunlight-loving plant. Data shows that apart from on the coast, this species may also appear in inland areas, for example on ruderal habitats such as roadsides. The results of our observations confirm the presence of the species on beaches and rocky bank reinforcement, with accumulation of annual vegetation in the Hel Peninsula and Puck Bay. Five sites, where Atriplex littoralis specimens occur have been found. In each site 1 to 15 specimens where found, in total 31. Five phytosociological relevés were made within the floristically poor patches of Matricario maritimae-Atriplicetum littoralis (Christiansen 1933) R.Tx. 1950. This association represents the protected type of habitat: Annual vegetation of drift lines (1210).

For the last 20 years researchers have tried to create new approaches of managing urban ecosystem by using remote sensing methods. The authors estimated the normalized vegetation index (NDVI) and moisture index (NDMI) indices of Kyiv and propose an approach which can be used for estimation vegetation of other cities. The aim of the study was to assess the indicators of NDVI and NDMI in Kyiv for the last 5 years. The authors consider the NDVI index as an important ecostabilizing component of the urban ecosystem, as well as an indicator of the well-being citizens in a modern city. The study used space images of the Sentinel-2 satellite system with resolution of 10×10 m and 10×20 m. The images were decrypted using the Sentinel Hub platform which updates the data-base daily. The paper presents the results of correlation analysis using Statistica-6.0 software and demonstrate the close relationship (r = 0.73, r2 = 0.55) between NDVI and NDMI. Thus, the statistical results of the study confirm a strong correlation between photosynthetic activity of plants and indicators of their water content by satellite imagery which allows using modern satellite technologies to assess the functional state of the urban vegetation. The changes in the length of active vegetative growth period were identified by NDVI and NDMI. The results of the research expand the directions of the methods of monitoring the condition of the urban vegetation cover in the aspect of applied landscape research.

Erosion and sedimentation have a very big influence on flooding. Floods are strongly influenced by land use and population activities that change the river’s physical condition, including erosion and sedimentation. The river upstream was very steep, and the downstream was narrowing and meandering with high rainfall recorded. This study analyses erosion, sedimentation, and its handling using the eco-hydraulic base. The method involves input rainfall data, river hydraulics, land use, watershed area, and land cover. The analysis of hydrology, hydraulics, land use, flood discharge, and eco-hydraulic, inundation height, vegetation diameter, velocity reduced, and riverbank width measured in five bridges cross-sections along the river. The eco-hydraulic compares the width of existing riverbanks and design, high inundation, and the vegetation diameter to minimise flood discharge. Erosion in the right cliff is 22.73% and the left cliff is 37.04%, land erosion was 225.83 Mg∙ha-1∙year -1. The river’s bottom is formed by rocks of 0.18-1.30 mm. The plantation land used around the Lae Kombih River grows mainly an oil palm with a diameter of 0.5-0.7 m. The riverbank design on 100 m for vegetation diameter of 0.1-1.0 m can retain flood discharge for five years return period up to 72.3%, resulting in discharge of 112.04209.43 m3∙s-1. The largest erosion and sedimentation on the river border is Dusun Silak, so it is recommended to plant Vetiveria zizanioides, Ipomoea carnea and Bambusoideae. An inundation height of 0.9 m can be recommended to design an embankment to be used as flood mitigation.

To examine the effect of climate variability on the different ecosystems, the study area has been classified into 10 smaller natural and anthropogenic landscapes based on landforms and land cover patterns. The preliminary analysis showed that the maximum biological productivity reflected by the NDVI of March and April has the highest correlation (0.5–0.8) to the same cumulative amounts of October–March period total precipitation and January–March period mean temperatures according to all datasets. In addition, this article showed there is a correlation between landscapes’ NDVI and global modulation represented by the September–February state of El Nińo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) (0.55–0.70) and December state of the dipole mode index (DMI) (0.35–0.72). The significant differences in the original precipitation and temperature levels according to the different datasets have urged the use of normalized time series: z-score of temperatures and analogous six-months the standardized precipitation index (SPI). However, the multiple correlation analysis showed that using ERA-

The aim of this article is to assess the structure of biodiversity of field protective forest shelter belts to determine the directions of increasing their reclamation and conservation potential in the organic agricultural landscape. Methods of comparative ecology (synecological approach, assessment of α-diversity), forestry, geobotany, ornithology and statistical analysis are used. Changes in species diversity of plants and birds in forest shelter belts around organic fields are characterized. It is established that plantations with developed undergrowth and understorey are transformed due to the loss of up to 43.5% of trees, liquefaction of the edificatory tier. Transformer species with a wide phytocenotic range predominate in the tree stands. The grass tier is dominated by ruderants (36.5%) and adventive species (24.5%). The share (60%) of species with a mixed life strategy indicates changes in moisture conditions and soil trophism. A 2.4% of shade-loving plants and the presence of 14.7% nitrophils indicate an imbalance in the structure of forest shelter belts. Depletion of species composition, ecological and trophic structure of bird groups testify to the decrease in the capacity of forest shelter belts and their statio diversity, reduction of protective, environment-creating functions and other ecosystem services. In the three-tiered dense forest shelter belts with developed undergrowth and understorey, 10–27 species of birds nest. In general, avifauna is represented by 2 ecological groups (93.1% dendrophiles, 6.9% sclerophiles), divided into 5 types of nesting strategy (with a predominance of hollow-nests 37.0–53.3%), and 5 types of feeding (with a predominance of entomophagous 70.4–90.0%). Twenty-nine species have been identified on nesting, 27 of which are subject to protection at the level of international agreements. There are no adventive species, the index of synanthropization of avifauna is high – 0.85–1.0. For organic technologies to increase the potential of biological protection of fields from entomological pests by attracting insectivorous birds is relevant.

Opis:
Zlewnia Kościańskiego Kanału Obry, do której należy Rów Wonieść, obejmuje obszar na styku strefy brzegowej zlodowacenia bałtyckiego z płaskimi równinami morenowymi z okresu zlodowacenia środkowopolskiego [1].
Weather conditions, especially rainfalls in Wielkopolska region, are characterized by wide variability of space and time. This region is especially exposed to atmospheric, hydrologic, and soil droughts, which may diminish crops. This work presents an influence of weather conditions on changes in water retentiondynamics in soil of regions: Nielegowo and Kościański Channel of Obra duringvegetation period in 2005-2007. There have been analyzed the soil moisture, reflection of ground water profiles. Profile 1 (mursh ground) was located 15 meters from melioration ditch, and the profile 2 (mursh soil) was 400 m from the ditch mentioned above.Periods of vegetation in 2005 and 2006 shoved average rainfalls, however in the year 2007, the vegetation period was counted to average dry ones.It was found that water retention in the analyzed soil profiles depended not only on the aggregation of rainfalls but also on their distribution. On the profile 1 which was located in the region under influence of the melioration ditch, the water retention during three year period of experimentation, as well as in the 0-50 cm layer, as well as 0-100 cm , were located in the field water capacity and the critical water content. The mean level of ground water in the soil profile was 104 cm below surface layer and it exerted an influence on water content of this profile. In the profile 2, which was located 400 m from melioration ditch water retention in the soil layer 0-50cm was falling multiple times below critical soil moisture. In vegetation period in 2006, retention was getting closer to moisture of permanent wilting point. Oscillation of ground water was between 83 cm (April 2005) and 155 cm (September 2005) below soil surface.
