The microclimate monitoring of Humor Monastery, Tismana Monastery and the refectory of Hurezi monastic complex from Romania was performed in order to investigate its effect on the growth of bacteria isolated from infilling mortar. According to the results, microclimate parameters values in Humor Monastery and the refectory of Hurezi monastic complex were similar but specific for each season due to the absence of central heating. Opposite, in Tismana Monastery with central heating, no remarkable differences were noticed during the year. Laboratory results showed that Halobacillus sp., Halobacillus naozhouensis and Nesterenkonia sp. were able to grow in the temperature range between 4 and 37°C with optimum at 28°C, respectively 15°C. The microclimate parameters from all objectives are favorable for carotenoid producing bacteria which developed true pink biofilms very well attached by the original and infilling mortar as well as by pictorial layer, hiding the real color of mural painting. The microbial origin of pink pigmentation on frescoes from Romanian historical monuments was demonstrated.

Opis:
Nowadays, it is well established that changes of cell stiffness observed by atomic force microscopy are linked with the cell cytoskeleton. Its structural and functional alterations are underlying major diseases such as cancer, inflammation or neurodegenerative disorders. So far, the use of atomic force microscopy is mostly focused on the determination of the Young modulus using the modified Hertz model. It can quantitatively describe the elastic properties of living cells, however, its value is burdened by the fact that cells are neither isotropic nor homogeneous material. Often, during the atomic force microscopy measurements, the hysteresis between the loading and unloading curves are observed which indicates the dissipation of an energy. In our studies, the index of plasticity was introduced to enumerate such effect during a single loading-unloading cycle. As the results show, such approach delivers an additional parameter describing the mechanical state of cell cytoskeleton. The analysis was performed on test samples where the mechanical properties of the melanoma cells were changed by glutaraldehyde and cytochalasin D treatments. The non-treated cells were compared with fibroblasts.

Opis:
The paper presents an investigation into the effects of endurance training and testosterone enanthate (TE) treatment on rat blood serum by fluorescence spectroscopy. Blood serum was collected from adolescent male Wistar rats randomized between the untrained controls and trained animals, either steroid untreated or receiving I.M. injections (8 or 80 mg/$kg_{BW}$) of testosterone enanthate. Fluorescence measurements were performed for undiluted or 20- and 500-fold diluted serum and analysed separately in the ultraviolet and visible light regions. In both regions the impact of the TE administration was more pronounced than the effect of endurance training. Moreover, in the visible region of spectrum, originated from a number of fluorescent metabolites, the influence of studied factors was more noticeable. The opposite effect of endurance training and administration of TE on serum emission was found for a lower (8 mg/$kg_{BW}$) dose of testosterone, whereas a high-dose TE (80 mg/$kg_{BW}$) treatment resulted in a return of fluorescence intensity.

Opis:
One of the main goals of radiotherapy is to achieve tumor control and minimize probability of normal-tissue complications. For this reason radiation oncology requires high accuracy, which implies no more than 2-3% uncertainty levels in the treatment planning calculations. That is challenging, when heterogeneous tissues such as lungs and bones are involved. To verify the accuracy of the dose calculation algorithms numerous approaches might be performed. The most common are point dose, one-dimensional profile and two-dimensional isodose line comparison with experimental measurements. In presented study, results of transport modeling and the deposited spatial distribution of the dose, obtained by anisotropic analytical algorithm and pencil beam convolution algorithm, were compared to measurements recorded during the experiment. To achieve meaningful conclusions, three parameters: dose difference, distance to agreement and gamma parameter (γ) were taken into consideration and examined. The irradiation was performed using CIRS anthropomorphic phantom. For dose detection gafchromic EBT films were used and scanned after exposure using Epson Scanner. Measured and planned dose distributions were analyzed via FilmQA software. Preliminary results showed that the anisotropic analytical algorithm, with its complex accounting of heterogeneities, provides more accurate dose calculation within an area of a high density gradient, than pencil beam convolution does. The level of the data accuracy derived from the experiment was: dose difference (5%) - 83.4% and 68% pixels passing, distance to agreement (3 mm) - 99.0% and 96.7%, gamma parameter (for dose difference (3%), distance to agreement (3 mm)) - 90% and 75.5%, respectively, for anisotropic analytical algorithm and pencil beam convolution algorithms. The comparison between studied parameters dose difference, distance to agreement and γ for both algorithms implicated anisotropic analytical algorithm as an appropriate approach in radiotherapy treatment planning.

Continuous measurement of the hematocrit level in blood can potentially be performed using optical fibre sensors. The Fabry-Perot interferometric sensors are a promising candidate in this application. The most important step in the design of the sensor is design of the sensing interferometer. Adequate cavity length and high interference contrast are two most important requirements in this application. The design method of the sensing interferometer presented in this paper uses a Gaussian beam approximation. In order to verify the design, an optical fibre Fabry-Perot interferometer with adjustable cavity length was built. Its performance was tested, confirming validity of the design approach.

We analyze coupling and propagation of light through a suspended-core microstructured optical fiber. It is experimentally demonstrated that light-coupling efficiency and mode distribution strongly depend on relative position of the fiber's core and a light beam and light polarization. The experimental results are supported with numerical simulations. The developed numerical model confirmed all the observed dependences.

Two types of hydrodynamically lubricated plain journal bearings were subject to examination differing in the method used to feed them with oil. The first type was fed from a lubrication pocket and the second from the bearing face side. Mathematical models were developed with two-way oil flow allowing to determine the oil film bearing capacity, the maximum pressure, the maximum temperature, and the film oil minimum height for given position of journal relative to solid bush. Static characteristics were developed used in the further course of the study to compare operating parameters of the considered types of bearings. Another issue considered in the paper is the effect of oil VG grade on bearing performance with conditions of oil feeding taken into account and results of the research presented.

The photonic-crystal fibre with a suspended core was analyzed in order to explain possibilities of its using in investigation of electrooptic and magnetooptic effects occurring in the molecules of gas passed into air holes in the fibre. As results from numerical analysis, even 20% of electromagnetic optical energy can be propagating in the area of the air holes. The obtained results indicate the possibility of scanning the electrooptic and magnetooptic effects in photonic-crystal fibres with a suspended core in the case of considerable diminishing of the core (even below 1 μm) or in the case of light applying with its larger wavelengths.

Opis:
The article presents the results of research on the distribution of power in the four states of the Visegrad Group (Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and the Slovak Republic) in the prospect of a powermetric approach, according to the synthetic formal model of measurement of economic power, military power, and geopolitical power of the state and its derivative indicators, which strengthen or weaken the position of the state in the system. This model has been developed by the Polish researcher Mirosław Sułek (Warsaw University). The regional distribution of all three categories of power of VG states has a unipolar structure, which is dominated by Poland with over fifty percent share in the total regional power of the VG structure. Assessment of the distribution of power is the first step to a comprehensive evaluation of the game of power and the game of interests in every international system.

Opis:
This article is the first part of research devoted to the inception and formation of mathematics history as a separate science in Russia. Its elements began intensively emerging in the epoch of Peter the Great and underwent several developmental stages. This work outlines five stages that Russian scientists went through while molding elements of studies in the history of mathematics into a science with its own subject, goals, and methods. The purpose of this article is to analyze the first stage, i.e. that of historical and scientific translations. We have chronologically analyzed two types of translations in this work (translations of mathematical works of early Greeks and translations of Western European works devoted to the history of mathematics) and briefly looked at translators’ personalia, which is relatively un- known in literature devoted to the history of mathematics. This part is devoted to translations and translator’s personalities of Euclid’s and Archimedes’ works.
Analizujemy pierwszy etap, tj. etap przekładów historycznych i naukowych. Chronologicznie przeanalizowaliśmy w tych badaniach dwa rodzaje tłumaczeń (tłumaczenia prac matematycznych wczesnych Greków i tłumaczenia dzieł zachodnioeuropejskich poświęconych historii matematyki) oraz przyjrzeliśmy się osobom tłumaczy, stosunkowo mało znanym w literaturze poświęconej historii matematyki. Niniejsza częśc omawia tłumaczenia i biogramy tłumaczy dzieł Euclidesa i Archimedesa.
